OS X V10.7 Lion :: Can't Close Windows In Preview
Mar 12, 2012
I'm using a 2011 Macbook Air running Lion 10.7.2.I open a group of photos using Preview. I right click one and select "open in new window". It opens. I decide to close said window by clicking the red X button. Nothing happens. I click the red X button of the main preview window with the pane of thumbnails on the side. It closes immediately. I click on the red X of the other window again. Still nothing. I go to Preview>Quit Preview. I get 10-20 seconds of pinwheel spinning. Finally, it closes.I've also noticed Lion hanging sometimes, especially when booting up.

I can't seem to find a way to close all windows in Preview.
Can somebody try this and see if they get the same result I do.
1. Copy an image into the clipboard.
2. Open Preview
3. Hold down command-N for about 20 seconds.Â
You should end up with dozens of windows with the image that you copied.
Now, try to close them.Â
I've unchecked 'Restore windows when quitting and re-openng apps' in System Preferences
I've typed in the 'defaults write com.apple.Preview NSQuitAlwaysKeepsWindows' hack in the terminal window
I've quit Preview with the 'option' button held down and 'Quit and Close All Windows' showing in the menu.Â
No matter what I do, the windows keep coming back every time I start Preview.Â
This 'force restore' feature of Lion is starting to get really annoying.

I finally upgraded to 10.7.4 this morning, and promptly opened TextEdit to write a new note to myself. When I tried to save it- cmd+S - the "File" in the menu bar was selected for ~10 seconds, as though it were saving, and then it was done. I never got the dialog to actually name the file, choose where to save it, etc. (Keep in mind that I'd just opened a new blank file, so I was kind of expecting this dialog.) Then it got weirder. I tried to close the window- cmd+W - and the x in the upper-left corner of the window was selected, as though it were trying to close, for ~10 seconds. Then it gave up and the window was still there. Needless to say I gave up, force-quit TextEdit and wrote the note in emacs. Should've done that all along...Â
Then, just now, I had the same thing happen to me in Preview. Can't save files, or close windows. Tried duplicating a jpg to save as a copy somewhere else, and never got a save dialog, and couldn't close either the copy or the original. Â

I have mac book pro 10.7.4 . I opened a few PDF files. Now preview wont close the windows. I tried:
1- turning off restore window feature on system preferences
2- using command + option + Q
3- deleting com.apple.preview file
Nothing seems to work.

what the difference is between the commands 'close window' and 'close all windows'? They seem to me to both have the same effect. In my earlier version of Safari, if I opened a new web page, it just replaced the earlier one, now though the new pages just keep accumulating. T

Ever since I installed Lion last year on another iMac, and now on my current iMac, whenever I hold down option and click the red close button on a Finder window to close all open windows, the Finder crashes. It doesn't happen every single time, but enough to really make me angry.

In Windows XP/Vista, if you are navigating in a folder containing pictures, and you click any picture, it opens up Windows built in preview program. Much like OSX. However, in Windows, you can click "Next/Previous" within that program to quickly flip through those photos. Why do the up & down arrows in OSX not work? I still prefer my iMac to any PC I have owned, but this one little thing bugs me to no end. Is there a setting I can change somewhere to make that work like in Windows?

I'm talking about if you have Windows set to do nothing and keep running if you shut the lid, useful for downloading large files overnight or something without letting the screen and keyboard get dusty. I've noticed that closing a MBP blocks over half of the ventilation space in the back, so of course it's going to get hotter than normal, and the screen is about 1mm away from the hot aluminum when it's closed, so I'm concerned about the heat damaging the screen. Does anyone have any experience or insight related to this?

I love expose, but I often find myself with 10+ windows/browsers/apps open that I no longer need. It feels so intuitive to hold my cursor over something I want to close to highlight it, and right click it (two finger tap) to close it. But of course this is not the case.
To my knowledge there is no way to close stuff while in Expose. Am I right or is there a way to close stuff while viewed in Expose?

Apple thinks there is no need for a button on the tower. Now I can't open or close the CD tray without the mouse. Via right click I can open it at least but to close it, I have to push the drawer, which I'm not a big fan of, as the machine is brand new and cost me 4k.

Due to my fingers tripping over themselves I accidentally double clicked and opened a bunch of stuff, about 50 files in all. Annoying but doable to manually close them. However, suppose I had accidentally opened 500 or 5,000 or 50,000? Hopefully I wont ever do this , but if I did Is there a way to get back to a 'clean' screen by killing these, perhaps even 'kill everything that opened in the last 5 minutes', or is logoff or even a restart the only realistic way

I'm running a couple of apps in XP through Parallels - coherence mode. Technically, I shouldn't have to see the Windows desktop. Question is - do I have to go in and manually shut down Windows before I shut down my MacBook Pro?

Have a PC hooked up to a Pioneer plasma here, and it's basically used to loop trailers in my video-store. The PC is running Windows 2003, and I thought iTunes is probably perfect for this as all the trailers I use are the 720p ones from Apple's servers. So I connect to the PC with VNC (no mouse or keyboard attached), start up iTunes, start the playlist with the videos and they start running fullscreen. But whenever I close the VNC connection the video window disappears from the Pioneer and I just get the desktop + iTunes. The videos are still running though, as the sound is playing and iTunes say they're running, but the video is completely gone.

I am a first-time Mac user and have a question about quiting/closing programs.
When you click the red button/X in the upper left corner of a program, is there a setting in Lion to make the program actually close/quit instead of having to go to the menu at the top and click Quit?
This was annoying on a windows mobile phone - it is still annoying on the iMac and I could not find any settings in System Preferences to change how clicking on the red button closes a program.

My iPhoto has always worked fine. Now I can't get it to open. Light under it in the dock is illuminated but the app won't open or close. Tried to restart computer but message indicated I had to close iPhoto first. I tried closing everything else and shutting power off, then turning back on. Illuminated iPhoto app on dock remains and I still can't open or close. Is this a common problem? I've never had this happen. I have over 5,000 photos

You can close or dismiss tabs in Safari with the X on the tab until you get to the last one. How can I dismiss the content there and get a blank page, similar to the way Safari in iOS 5 works.
