OS X V10.7 Lion :: Changed Wheel Group Properties To No Access At Top Disk Level
Jun 2, 2012
I messed up, I changed my "Wheel group" properties to No Access ( or something other than the default) at the top level of my startup disk "Macintosh HD".now my computer won't start up, I just get the spinning wheel of death.I also am in Thailand right now, so I cannot go to a Genius at an apple store, nor do I have startup disks available. So I was hoping there was a way to change back the properties of my disk (Volume) in single user mode (via Command +s) during startup, i.e. can I do a chmod command on the Macintosh HD listing under the Volume Directory.Or where do i fix this? Is it fixable without startup disks, etc...

I accidently removed the wheel group from my hard drive's sharing and permissions. I ran the disk utility and everything seems to be fine

I have been setting up a large sharing network with my housemates and have been messing around with sharing permissions quite a bit. I saw a group named wheel and foolishly removed it from somewhere... I think it was the Macintosh HD... the Macbook stopped!Upon researching, I now know what the wheel group is, and that I should have left it the **** alone. At the time though, I thought it was someone in the house with access to my whole drive.I have tried repairing permissions in disc utility, but still get spinning wheel (ironic) upon restart.
DO I need to re-install OSX?
The macbook pro came with snow-leopard and I upgraded to lion, if I re-install from 10.6 disk will I have issues?

I use a NAS for backups and external storage. At some time in the past week, my backup operations stopped working, and I think I have tracked down the source of the problem. Somehow, an "extension" got added to the disk name (I did not do this and I am not sure how it happened). The disk name (Cosmos) has not changed, but when right click and choose "get info", in the "Name and Extension" section, the disk shows up as Cosmos-1. Unfortunately, the name is greyed out and I can't change it.Does anybody know how I can remove the -1 extension and change the name back to Cosmos so that my backups see the disk again?

I have a new MacBook Air running Lion. Every time I use my backup software, it changes the permissions on my external drives, and I have to change them from read only to read & write, so I've gotten in that habit. At one point, I noticed that the permissions on my internal *startup disc* were read only, so I (foolishly, I now know) changed the permissions on the startup disc to read & write, with apply to all enclosed items checked. As I continued working, I got messages that a number of extensions could not be used and will be disabled (or something like that). I decided to reboot, so the computer could reset and hopefully correct things.
When I tried to boot, it hung up on the grey screen with the Apple logo and the spinning clock/gear. I let it spin for a while, then forced power down and tried to boot in safe mode. The progress bar appeared as it's supposed to, but when the progress bar finished, it went back to the grey screen and hung up again. I let it spin for over 40 minutes before powering down, just in case it was doing diagnostics or something. I don't have access to the original OS DVD (nor do I have an optical drive to put it in). Any way for getting the computer to boot, at least in safe mode?

I tried to install Snow Leopard.
I got the error, "The contents of this disk can't be changed. Mac OS X couldn't be installed on this disk."
I restarted, to boot from the startup disk, not the CD.
And now it just goes to the grey screen and shuts off.
Pressing "C" or "Opt - Command - P - R" or holding down the Power button for a while and then restarting, or trying "Command - V"..... none of it works.
The machine just goes to the grey screen, the wheel spins, and it turns off.

I have a external HD which has always worked fine under snow leopard. Since upgrading to lion I keep getting the following message The identity of the backup disk has changed since the previous backup. The disk may have been replaced or erased, or someone may be trying to trick your computer into backing up to the wrong disk. And after this the drive disappears from the desktop appearing agian only after restart. What can I do do rectify this? Delete and re-intialise the drive?

When I had my mighty mouse, the mouse wheel when clicked opened my widgets. Now I've switched to a wired optical mouse, Non apple brand it doesn't work. I've searched all the settings and cant find an option to tick or select to allow the mouse wheel click to access widgets. I've googled around loads and I must not be using the right search terms as its just not showing up what so ever.

I have 5 partitions on 3 harddisks. While installing Snow Leopard on one of them I Lost access to ALL of them. By using the Installer DVD I managed to fix the Snow Leopard one but the rest are locked. I can't change permissions even as an admin, tried Terminal, nothing works, I'm getting desperate (and tired-It's 2:20 in Sweden now). The symbol of the HD in the info shows a HD with a padlock on it! Is there a Terminal command to unlock it? I have never used Terminal until this happend. If I don't reply at once I'm probably in bed but I hope somebody has helped me when I wake up.

I have a USB disk attached to my Airport Extreme, and use it as the target of my time machine backups from my mac book pro (connected via WiFi). For the most part things work fine. But if my macbook goes to sleep, after it wakes up it often (not always) gets the next time machine backup to fail with a message saying that it cannot access the disk. At first I found a brutal method of correcting it: I would disconnect from WiFi, go to my AE and power cycle it. After it came back the macbook never had any problem with the disk. A little more exploration indicated that Lion wasn't unmounting the disk properly. The following works (but sometimes requires a few iterations): I'll go to finder, eject the disk, and disconnect from Airport Extreme, and then go to the terminal and do sudo diskutil unmountdisk disk1 (I first do a diskutil list to find out the right disk)Â
and then ask time machine to backup again. Many times I have to repeat this a few more times before it "takes". Has anyone else run into this? It clearly looks like a bug in Lion, since it never happened until I upgraded.Â
PS. I understand that Apple says that they don't support time machine backup to network disks. But they do to a time capsule! It isn't really different.

I want to make a script that adjusts the output volume of my mac based on the volume that the mic hears. I am not very good with applescript, but I do know how to control the volume. I was wondering if there was a command that retrieved the input level from the mic as it is show in the sound preferences in the system preferences window.

I am using a Mac Mini with OS X 10.7. I am having an issue with an external disk that was previously used as my main file source with an older Mac Mini. It seems there is a certain folder on the disk that I can't open or access that contains my lossless music files. When I look at the permissions it doesn't let me set them and also doesn't show "me", with the name I use to login to the system, as having access, or even showing up in the permissions on GetInfo.

I bought my first IMac last month. I changed my access password yesterday and now I can use my computer. It does not like the password I am typing. It asks me to get a Recovery Key. I have contacted Apple support and they told me to do a Recovery using the Command key and R at the beginning of the session. I have done that and it brings me back to the unlock my system with a password. How do I get a recovery key to unlock my system?

My girlfriend changed the user's name and the problems started (iMac wouldn't remeber system settings and denied access to some files and catalogs). When I wanted to fix the problem I probably made a mistake and changed the access settings of some files (finally even hard disk's settings). After this action my iMac doesn't start (the screen is white with the apple logo and nothing happens). Is there anybody who knows what to do now?

I invested in the Canon PIXMA MP610 to go with my new iMAC but can't get the printer properties feature to work. There is a multi-tab dialogue box in Windows with all sorts of useful features e.g. print quality, paper type & size, watermarks etc so I presume I should be getting something similar on my MAC? Have downloaded all latest drivers from Canon siteI'm new to MACs having only just moved away from Windows, so I may be doing something really stupid!

I was upgrading from Tiger to Snow Leopard (I asked a worker in the Apple store and he assured me it was okay to do so) and about 15 minutes into the installation I got a message saying "Unable to install. Please retry". Then when I retried it says "The contents of this disk can't be changed. Mac OS X couldn't be installed on this disk."

Suddenly my Disk Utility changed to Danish and the paper/pencil/ruler icon is in it's place. How can I change my Disk Utility back to English?
Noticed this after a back-up last night. How can I change my DU back to English? I can't use it for repair permissions, partitions etc. because I don't read Danish.

I have a 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5 Mac book Pro, I changed the hard disk once, and now when I tried to update it, it always says "An unexpected error occurred" And the only button for me is the "Restart button" (Remember, I always have my Wifi on).
