Using Terminal to copy a backup copy of iPhoto Library to a user account's Pictures folder, I ended up turning the entire Pictures folder into a Package/Application (that's what it is recognized as). IMAGINE I have 2 hard disk partitions on the SAME hard disk,
one is called 'Macintosh HD' and the other is called 'My Data'.
The Plan:
In the 'Macintosh HD', there are (1) system files & (2) users' settings.
In the 'My Data', there are all the music, pictures, etc.
For example, the 'Macintosh HD' has 40GB and the 'My Data' has 120GB.
All I want to do is to separate the SYSTEM and my DATA without migrating my home folder inside 'Macintosh HD' which contains folders called 'Music', 'Pictures'... to the partition 'My Data'.
I want to separate the system files and my data incase I need to reinstall the Mac OS X while leaving all my data untouched.
So the way I should do (I guess) is to leave my home folder inside 'Macintosh HD' empty,
and create files called, for example, 'My Music', 'My Pictures', etc. in the 'My Data' partition.
Then redirect the files 'Music', 'Pictures', etc. in my home folder inside 'Macintosh HD' to 'My Music', 'My Pictures', etc. in the 'My Data' partition.
In Windows XP or Windows 7, you can redirect those as using the methods below:

But I just don't know how to do that in Mac OS X, it seems that Mac OS X doesn't even provide a way for users to do so:

I saw a reply in macrumors forum and tried to move the 'Music', 'Pictures', etc. folders,
but it turned out that those files were being copied, not moved.
So I can't move the 'Music', 'Pictures', etc. to the partition 'My Data' and make aliases of them which can be put in my home folder inside 'Macintosh HD'.
So, are there only 3 options for me too choose?
(1) stop trying to fight Apple and Mac OS X on where it puts things, just put all the things in my home folder inside 'Macintosh HD', using only 1 partition
(2) move my home folder to the other disk partition, in this case, the partition 'My Data'
(3) can't redirect the location of Music', 'Pictures', etc. folders in my home folder in the 'Macintosh HD', but just simply put things in the 'My Data'.
Is it possible to change the default download folder for transferring pictures from my phone to my MacBook Pro? It is currently the Public folder. I would like to create a specific folder for the transfer of pictures, another for the transfer of files, etc.

So I just upgraded to Snow Leopard and I haven't noticed much of a difference on my MacBook. Anyways, when I used to open my applications folder all my app icons were smaller and they would all fit in the box. Now when I open it, I have to scroll to get to the different apps. How can I change this back to what it used to be?
Have a 2nd internal hard drive on my Mac Pro work station and os 10.5.2 on it. I did a restart to start up on this hd and found the Home Folder in users titled "PPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP". How can I rename it back to what it was originally so I can do the updates on it ? Had this prob. a year or so ago and can't remember how I corrected it.

I have just installed a new 128 SSD into my MacBook Pro instead of SuperDrive and kept also the old HDD inside. I made a clean install of Lion on the SSD which created a new Pictures folder on the SSD, but I want to have it linked to the old HDD. Is there any way how to change destination of these default folders? I'm having serious issue on my MacPro 10.7.4, as I can't log in any more. My setup: System 10.7.4 on MacPro SSD (internal SSD)Data on my software RAID0 on 2 internal HD. Unfortunately I had the bad idea to move my home folder on the RAID0 cluster. One of the 2 hard drives just died, making impossible to reach any data on this side! So now, I just get an error trying to log back, as I guess the system can't find my home folder.
I just set up a second partition on my SSD, installed lion again and boot from here. So I can have access to the original SSD file system. I'd like to modify some files to update the path to a new home folder. (not on the RAID obviously but still on SSD). Could be done by terminal / command line. I used to know how to do that on linux by modify /etc/password, but I can't find the same files on OSX. How to modify / update the system user path, so I could boot again from by previous partition?

I put an external USB drive into my Macbook Pro, to transfer some files from it to a PC. I wanted to delete a file from a folder that I've just copied, but the file would just pop right back on.I've tried to erase the whole drive, Disk Utility couldn't. I'm an idiot, pleased to meet you.I had 2 external drives connected to my Macbook Pro, both had time machine back ups on...I meant to delete one of these but deleted the wrong one, and dragged it into Trash. On realising my mistake I tried to drag it back out of Trash, as you would normally but after "preparing to copy" for four hours it told me the drive was full...It's a 500gb drive, and the Time Machine back up is the only thing on it, so presumably it's just trying to copy itself when the back up is still present on the drive, albeit in the Trash.

Is it possible to "force" a Folder "Date Modified" timestamp to change when an enclosed file is changed/updated? I want to look at a folder and know the date/time of the latest enclosed file/folder change. This is especially important to me when using syncing apps as I want to visually see by a folders date that a sync has occurred (the actual file change may be deeply nested within the folder.)

I would like to know how to best back up my iPhoto pics? I thought about time machine but that would require me selecting and deselecting things and therefore would be a pain and would mess up my regular internal backup hdd.I also noticed, that iPhoto doesn't store the pics in a simple folder. You need to select "show folder content" which shows many folders ( I believe one regular and one with changes) but its a pain to always go through this.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI know the Home Folder short name changing issue has been discussed already on here, and most people seem to advise either against it or to backup before proceeding. I just obtained my first MacBook Pro second hand, and it still has the previous owner's Home Folder and Short Name, even though he has deleted all his files from it, and there's only pretty much standard folders within it (Library, Applications), but nothing in them. I've been saving my own stuff elsewhere in another folder I created on the Mac HD drive. Is it fairly safe then to change his name over to my own following the steps on the Apple website, or would his home still be attached to certain important components? I'd rather not create a brand new account where I have to fiddle with settings again for everything, though I'm not sure if I may have to do that anyway. I'm using Leopard, by the way. The login he passed on at start-up still says administrator as a user name, though, not his shortname. Will that change also?
