OS X :: Change Style Of Dock - Use Pictures
Aug 31, 2009
i've been watching some videos on youtube and saw that they had their dock on the bottom but with the side dock style. To be more clear i'll use pictures. This is how my dock looks right now: [URL] This is how I want it to look, just on the bottom not the side: [URL]

Basically I changed my dock to look like it was wood, not the usual grayish transparency one. It all worked. However, when I moved it from the bottom of the screen to the right of the screen, it goes back to the original dock. And even if I then try to change it to the wood-like one, or even any other dock, it just doesn't change. I know, trivial, but it's just bugging me. Why?
The above is solved. However, then I went to try and find some replacement docks for 2D? If that's what you call it - but I can't find anything. What I have done is put the dock on the right hand side, making it 2D, and all I have been able to find searching the net are 3D replacement docks. Does anyone know how I can possibly change the dock when it's on the right (or left) side? I want to make it transparent, or at least a little lighter.

I have seen some desktops with their bottom dock but in the style of the left dock. I'm desperately looking for the left hand style dock on the bottom. I have CandyBar but it is only the trial.

Using a new macbook pro and can't find a way to change the font style for folders displayed on the desktop. Running Lion. The font for folders on the desktop currently uses a shadow effect and it's hard to read.

I'm not happy with the backdrop that appears on my display when my MBA starts up, before I log in to my user account. So I'm not referring to the wallpaper that you'd see on the desktop if all your applications were minimised or closed, but the background when you first switch the notebook on (visible when the theme tune is played, and the apple symbol shown). The MBA I purchased in September had a lovely background that was a subtle cross hatch of dark and medium grey. The newer model, purchased this June (after I destroyed the first one through water damage) has a boring, solid light grey background instead. I haven't been able to work out how to alter this in system preferences.

This hint requires that you have apple developer tools installed in order to use plist editor. I have a root account enabled on my system which i was logged into to use this hint, i'm sure some of the more terminal thrifty users can chime in on how to do this through the terminal.
In the finder navigate to applications folder and right click on itunes and select Show Package Contents. Once Contents is open the path is Contents/Resources/English.lproj/TextStyles.plist. Right click on TextStyles.plist and open with Property List Editor.app. in Property List Editor.app locate 9003 and click the arrow next to it.
You will see 3 lines of settings on the FONT row i changed the font to LucidaGrange-Bold. on the SIZE line i changed 13 to 18. then save the file
I now have iTunes with a bold and larger font just the way i like it. Im a musician and use itunes to make my bands set lists I just take a screen capture of the list and print in preview.

I've been trying to change my docks theme for the past few days but have been unable. I've used Candybar, Dock Library etc. and none of them seem to work. I'm really annoyed because it used to work for me. Any suggestions on how I can remedy this problem?

Just bought my mac this saturday so I'm still getting used to not having a pc. In the screen saver option, I was wondering if there's anyway to change the speed by which the pictures change one after each other, and if I choose to have the picture on my desktop background change every 30 seconds how bad will that hurt my battery?

Using Terminal to copy a backup copy of iPhoto Library to a user account's Pictures folder, I ended up turning the entire Pictures folder into a Package/Application (that's what it is recognized as). How do I turn it back into a folder? I cannot do anything with it otherwise, such as create a folder in it

For some peculiar reason, my desktop pictures do NOT change / rotate on my secondary display.
I have a MacBook Pro 15" (Late 2007) running Snow Leopard 10.6.2 and I have dual displays. My primary display (the MBP screen) DOES change / rotate picture every minute, but I want my secondary display to do the same.
It seems that restarting does fix it, but only temporarily. I think it might have to do with plugging/unplugging the secondary display and sometimes if it's working, I disconnect and reconnect the monitor and then the pictures stop rotating.
All my desktop picture settings are correct in System Preferences. I tried unchecking then rechecking the "Change picture:" checkmark, but that doesn't fix anything.
I also tried clicking on different folders in the left column of the Pref Pane, then clicking back on my chosen desktop pictures folder.

IMAGINE I have 2 hard disk partitions on the SAME hard disk,
one is called 'Macintosh HD' and the other is called 'My Data'.
The Plan:
In the 'Macintosh HD', there are (1) system files & (2) users' settings.
In the 'My Data', there are all the music, pictures, etc.
For example, the 'Macintosh HD' has 40GB and the 'My Data' has 120GB.
All I want to do is to separate the SYSTEM and my DATA without migrating my home folder inside 'Macintosh HD' which contains folders called 'Music', 'Pictures'... to the partition 'My Data'.
I want to separate the system files and my data incase I need to reinstall the Mac OS X while leaving all my data untouched.
So the way I should do (I guess) is to leave my home folder inside 'Macintosh HD' empty,
and create files called, for example, 'My Music', 'My Pictures', etc. in the 'My Data' partition.
Then redirect the files 'Music', 'Pictures', etc. in my home folder inside 'Macintosh HD' to 'My Music', 'My Pictures', etc. in the 'My Data' partition.
In Windows XP or Windows 7, you can redirect those as using the methods below:
(1)[URL]
But I just don't know how to do that in Mac OS X, it seems that Mac OS X doesn't even provide a way for users to do so:
[URL]
I saw a reply in macrumors forum and tried to move the 'Music', 'Pictures', etc. folders,
but it turned out that those files were being copied, not moved.
So I can't move the 'Music', 'Pictures', etc. to the partition 'My Data' and make aliases of them which can be put in my home folder inside 'Macintosh HD'.
So, are there only 3 options for me too choose?
(1) stop trying to fight Apple and Mac OS X on where it puts things, just put all the things in my home folder inside 'Macintosh HD', using only 1 partition
(2) move my home folder to the other disk partition, in this case, the partition 'My Data'
(3) can't redirect the location of Music', 'Pictures', etc. folders in my home folder in the 'Macintosh HD', but just simply put things in the 'My Data'.

When you right-click or hold down an icon on the Dock, theres always a white pop-up that says (ex. Open, Remove for Dock, Show in Finder, etc.) I saw a YouTube video of a guy that had a black pop-up and I asked but he won't reply. Anyone know how to do this?

What would be a good way, if possible, to change the colors and such of the icons in my dock? I wanna make them all black and white, with some splashes of red in there. Also, any other parts of my OS that I could customize to the same color scheme would be nice. I have Leopard, 10.5.2, if you need that info.

How do I change my dock icons without candybar? Every tutorial I find either only tells you how to make the icons, but never tells you how to swap icons, like the finder icon for example. (I want to make the pumpkin finder for halloween.)Anyone know of a tutorial that shows how to swap them? Or where these original icons are on the computer?

I am wondering if it is possible to fix the position of an icon in the dock without actually pinning it there. Thus it is not on the dock unless it is launched but when it is in the dock it is on a specific location. I think those overly crowed docks are pointless and only for people who are incapable of useing spotlight or other launchers. I launch apps with spot light and use the dock much like a windows Taskbar. The problem I want my browser close together but I don't want safari's button to be around unless it is actually launched. I sometimes hit it accidentially and there is no point to it being there when it's not running, at least none that I can think of.
