Have a 2nd internal hard drive on my Mac Pro work station and os 10.5.2 on it. I did a restart to start up on this hd and found the Home Folder in users titled "PPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP". How can I rename it back to what it was originally so I can do the updates on it ? Had this prob. a year or so ago and can't remember how I corrected it.
View 3 RepliesIMAGINE I have 2 hard disk partitions on the SAME hard disk,
one is called 'Macintosh HD' and the other is called 'My Data'.
The Plan:
In the 'Macintosh HD', there are (1) system files & (2) users' settings.
In the 'My Data', there are all the music, pictures, etc.
For example, the 'Macintosh HD' has 40GB and the 'My Data' has 120GB.
All I want to do is to separate the SYSTEM and my DATA without migrating my home folder inside 'Macintosh HD' which contains folders called 'Music', 'Pictures'... to the partition 'My Data'.
I want to separate the system files and my data incase I need to reinstall the Mac OS X while leaving all my data untouched.
So the way I should do (I guess) is to leave my home folder inside 'Macintosh HD' empty,
and create files called, for example, 'My Music', 'My Pictures', etc. in the 'My Data' partition.
Then redirect the files 'Music', 'Pictures', etc. in my home folder inside 'Macintosh HD' to 'My Music', 'My Pictures', etc. in the 'My Data' partition.
In Windows XP or Windows 7, you can redirect those as using the methods below:

But I just don't know how to do that in Mac OS X, it seems that Mac OS X doesn't even provide a way for users to do so:

I saw a reply in macrumors forum and tried to move the 'Music', 'Pictures', etc. folders,
but it turned out that those files were being copied, not moved.
So I can't move the 'Music', 'Pictures', etc. to the partition 'My Data' and make aliases of them which can be put in my home folder inside 'Macintosh HD'.
So, are there only 3 options for me too choose?
(1) stop trying to fight Apple and Mac OS X on where it puts things, just put all the things in my home folder inside 'Macintosh HD', using only 1 partition
(2) move my home folder to the other disk partition, in this case, the partition 'My Data'
(3) can't redirect the location of Music', 'Pictures', etc. folders in my home folder in the 'Macintosh HD', but just simply put things in the 'My Data'.
I know the Home Folder short name changing issue has been discussed already on here, and most people seem to advise either against it or to backup before proceeding. I just obtained my first MacBook Pro second hand, and it still has the previous owner's Home Folder and Short Name, even though he has deleted all his files from it, and there's only pretty much standard folders within it (Library, Applications), but nothing in them. I've been saving my own stuff elsewhere in another folder I created on the Mac HD drive. Is it fairly safe then to change his name over to my own following the steps on the Apple website, or would his home still be attached to certain important components? I'd rather not create a brand new account where I have to fiddle with settings again for everything, though I'm not sure if I may have to do that anyway. I'm using Leopard, by the way. The login he passed on at start-up still says administrator as a user name, though, not his shortname. Will that change also?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am aware that there are plenty of other threads asking this question, and that there is even a page in Apple Support regarding the solution to this. The reason I've come here is because nothing I've come across has worked so far. Apple Support, and various replies to threads, have all told me that I must enable the root user, log in as the root user, and then navigate to the Users folder, at which point I could then re-name my home folder as I would normally do with any other folder, and then create a new account with the same name as the folder.
What I did was enable the root, log in as the root, and then go to the Users folder. That's where I was forced to stop, as I was still unable to edit the Home folder's name. I normally change folder names by right-clicking on the folder, selecting Get Info, and then just editing name in the little window that pops up. I know that you can also click on the folder and press enter, which is much faster. Neither of these methods worked; I'm still unable to edit the Home folder. My account is the first and only account to have been made on the computer, obviously making me an administrator, so there shouldn't be a problem there. I have a Mac OS X 10.6.4 Snow Leopard.
I recently tried to edit it after reading another thread on this forum by going to the Account Preferences and right-clicking my user to access the Advanced Options. I changed my user's name to what I'd wanted it to be known as, and it did nothing to the Home folder. So I went back to change it back to what it was, and I'm unable to unlock the Lock button. I haven't logged out, and am unsure as to whether or not I'll be able to log back in again. I tried unlocking it with my account name, the name I'd changed when I was last able to access that area (which is the same as my account name), and the name it used to be, and none of them are working. This worries me greatly, as I'm now unable to log out, in case I'd be restricted from logging back in.
On my old MBP, my home folder (/Users/username) was just my first name, with a capital first letter. On my new MBP, it is firstnamelastname, all one word, all lower case. How can I change it?

I'm having serious issue on my MacPro 10.7.4, as I can't log in any more. My setup: System 10.7.4 on MacPro SSD (internal SSD)Data on my software RAID0 on 2 internal HD. Unfortunately I had the bad idea to move my home folder on the RAID0 cluster. One of the 2 hard drives just died, making impossible to reach any data on this side! So now, I just get an error trying to log back, as I guess the system can't find my home folder.
I just set up a second partition on my SSD, installed lion again and boot from here. So I can have access to the original SSD file system. I'd like to modify some files to update the path to a new home folder. (not on the RAID obviously but still on SSD). Could be done by terminal / command line. I used to know how to do that on linux by modify /etc/password, but I can't find the same files on OSX. How to modify / update the system user path, so I could boot again from by previous partition?

At some point I changed the appearance of my PDF icons from the default red and white Adobe PDF image to where the PDF icons show a little image of the front cover of the PDF. I recently moved all my music on my moms computer from the regular iTunes folder to another. Then when I tried to play the music, it couldn't find it. so I went into prefrences, and changed the target folder to the new one. But when I changed it, it still couldnt find the music. CandyBar & LiteIcon even allow me to change the "applications" folder, "Documents" and "Downloads", etc... but I havent had any luck with the cliche standard blue folders.
When my 2010 macbook pro changes graphics card it removes my background and sets it as a blue screen. Everything else still works fine and if i go back and set the desktop background again it sets it until next time the card changes!

Been trying to change some of the default icons Apple provide with third party .icns files by opening the folder info window in finder by using the 'get info' command, then clicking the icon in the top left hand corner (so it is has the tiny blue halo) and then edit-paste in the new icon. Sometimes it works (have changed some successfully) but now when I try, instead of the pasted icon displaying the icon image, I get the generic or default icon image for an icns icon displayed, see the screen grab attachment for what I mean

So I just upgraded to Snow Leopard and I haven't noticed much of a difference on my MacBook. Anyways, when I used to open my applications folder all my app icons were smaller and they would all fit in the box. Now when I open it, I have to scroll to get to the different apps. After I logged out of my account, I logged back in to see nothing on my desktop except for "Macintosh HD." I click on it and noticed that my home folder is mounted as a disk image under "Places." By "home folder" I meant the folder found at MacintoshHDusers ame-of-folder. I did not shutdown and login again, I logged out back to the main login screen, then logged in again under the same account. Shutting down the computer before logging in to the same account prevents this from happening, but logging out then logging back in causes it to happen.

I'm using MacBook Pro Early 2011 model with Mountain Lion (10.8.5).
I recently noticed that there was an application folder in my home folder (the folder with your username), but that application folder had been empty. I remember I used to be able to access to my applications from that folder, but not anymore.Â
Since the folder was empty, I deleted it before doing further research.Â
After deleting the empty application folder from the home folder, I looked up and some said the application folder in the home folder and the application folder in Macintosh HD are two different folders. I don't know what it means, but I would like to have an application folder with applications in my home folder. Is this possible? or should I just make an Alias folder and put it in my home folder?

Anyway, one of my home folders for a user account has gone missing. when you are logged into the account it belongs to you can navigate to it via finder. However you cannot see the folder via finder from any other account. This account is NOT an admin. I had this problem when I was running tiger and it still remains now that I have leopard. 2Ghz INtel core 2 duo Aluminum iMac.

However I have seen it because after converting samples Logic showed me the folder and its contents. I would very much like to move the samples from their present location in this folder on the startup disk to the EXS 24 samples folder on the external RAID array that is dedicated to this purpose - - but I don't know how to make the Library folder visible.
