iMac 27, 2.8 Quad Core, 16 GB RAM, 3 TB HD running 10.7.3Â lead in > Lately I am having trouble with Aperture 3.2.3 who doesn't let me make some image adjustments "out of the blue". To correct this I usially have to reinstall Aperture from scratch. Trying to do so made me find out that I can't execute the Aperture trial 3.1 dmg file or any other dmg file on my iMac. When i double klick on a dmg file it will flash once and then just sit there doing nothing. The dmg "Get Info" window shows that the file is associated with the DiskImageMounter.app as supposed to. I have no glue why it won't execute these files and open the installer. I have tried everything from executing with disk image to repair permissions etc, etc. and I have read all forums and threats I could find but to no avail. Â
The only way to fix this is reinstalling OSX 10.7.3. After reinstalling Lion everything is just fine - for a while. I am able to reinstall aperture with the trial version dmg file. All other dmg files will also execute. For now I was able to work with my reinstalled system for the last seven days with no glitches, but last night same problem occured as described earlier. I have also checked my harddrive with disk utility and onyx. Both apps say HD is just fine.

If I try to mount almost any DMG file I just get an error message saying that there is no mountable file system. I know that these are not corrupt dmg files because these are ones that I have mounted before, it affects almost every single one and more importantly if I reboot in Safe Mode every single one mounts perfectly.Â
Clearly then something is running in normal mode that is preventing dmg's from mounting but I don't know how to find out what. I went to System Properties>User & Groups>Login Items and removed everything that was there but that was just iTunes Helper and something called WDC something or other which was unchecked anyway and is just a utility that controls my external hard drives. With everything removed and rebooted still DMG files won't mount.Â
Safe Mode = DMG's mount
Normal Mode = DMG's won't mount.Â
how I can find out what is causing this problem and/or how to fix it as it's annoying as **** and preventing me from easily updating software.

I am downloading the dmg files (Mac dvd player and vlc, because somebody deleted my dvd app and I don't have the original disks) with a windows pc which is apparently fine (I've try to transfer with both memory stick and cdr) and I've used disk utility to repair the hd and to repair permissions and still nothing!
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a SD card that has some files on it that I need. When I put it in my card reader and plug it into the USB it doesnt mount. I tried it in another card reader and it wont work in that one either. I opened Disk Utility and it shows that it mounts it for a split second and shows the size, but then it disappears from the list. I really need these files. Is there any way to recover them?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently sold my macbook pro. In the meantime, I have reverted to using a 7 year old ibook (running 10.4.11) for ichat, email, etc...I have a .dmg that is a backup of the macbook pro, and I wanted to mount it and pull some files off it. Despite the fact that it would take days to mount on the ibook, I was wondering if it is possible to mount a 100GB dmg on a hardrive that is only 80GB?
View 5 Replies View RelatedSomething must have changed with the last software update I did. The DMG files now open in Disk Utility instead of automatically mounting when I double-click. Not really a show-stopper as I can still mount thru D.U. but kind of annoying... I am on Leopard.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm using a 2GHz PowerPC G5, OS X 10.4.11, with 1 GB on one dimm. I cannot open ANY .dmg files. I have tried clicking the image, and also on a clean download used "open with" each time I received the following message The following disk image failed to mount
Reason: Device not configured
I have followed the instructions in this thread:- Disk image failed to mount: Device not configured.
Firstly Run /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.
Click on "Macintosh HD" in the left column and then press the "Repair Disk Permissions" button.
Delete the file called /System/Library/Extension.kextcache
Delete the folder called /System/Library/Caches/com.apple.kernalcaches/
Restart
That made no difference. I then tried bobw's advice here Panther - Disk Image "mounting Failed" Panther - Disk Image "mounting Failed". That made no difference. I have since gone on to justanswer.com and the advice I received was to do an archive and install and then a full combo update.
I set up a Linux Mint Server with NFS after SSH doesnt worked now i want to connect to my Server i have /media/movies set free to use for my account, but when i try to connect it says it doesn´t find the server. When i go to a File on the server which isn´t set free to use it says i don´t have the right to connect so i think it finds the server. I´ve also connected my via Terminal but than it also says i don´t have the right to see this folder, but i tried it under windows and linux with the same id and it worked so i don´t know why it doesn´t work on apple.

I'm currently working on migrating some machines from Snow Leopard to Lion, and I have a bunch of postimaging scripts that are fired on first boot. The first script automatically mounts an SMB share to copy the rest of the postimaging scripts and run them. However it would seem that it is no longer possible to mount an SMB share as root (root as in running sudo -i as an admin account to get to a root shell, or running the command prefixed with sudo) as it fails with "mount_smbfs: server rejected the connection: Authentication error". As far as I can tell, the request is not actually making it to the SMB server, as there is no log entries indicating a failure for this particular user to logon.

I decided not to use just one partition with my disk because i wanted to separte important documents from the OS and apps so reformated my disk with 2 partitions 1 for OS and apps and one for docs. I also wanted to keep the docs partition secure so it was my intention to use filevault... however it learned that file vault would only work on my whole disk and not on a sigle volume. At least thats the only option i get when i go to "Turn on FileVault" in the Security and Privacy of system preferences. So what i tried next was to reformat the "docs" partition i have created using the Mac OS extended (journaled) encrypted option. This option seemed to work but after formating the partition, I could not mount the volume.
Question is: what is the best way for what i am trying to do and how to do it.
a) is there a way to use FileVault on a single volume instead of the whle disk?
b) alternatively, how to format an encrypted partition and mount it?

I have a Western Digital MyBook 1 TB external USB drive that has worked fine for years. I used it a day and a half ago under 10.7.3 with absolutely no problems. I then upgraded to 10.7.4, and now the drive won't mount. It spins up for a second or two, then powers off. Console shows the following: 5/17/12 11:31:55.000 AM kernel: USBF:4544.789[0xffffff800aa42400] The IOUSBFamily is having trouble enumerating a USB device that has been plugged in. It will keep retrying. (Port 1 of Hub at 0x4000000)5/17/12 11:31:58.000 AM kernel: USBF:4547.797[0xffffff800aa42400] The IOUSBFamily was not able to enumerate a device.Â
Do I have a borked installation of 10.7.4? Would a simple re-install fix the problem? It seems highly unlikely to me that the drive just happened to silently die in the interim between its last use and the 10.7.4 install... What's going on?

After using OS Lion, I used to use this HD as my time machine.Yesterday I wanted to backup, found out that my Mac pro can not mount this HD anymore. Other my older external HDs are working well, except this one.
I wonder why? My console shows fallowing error,p.s: already did SMC and PRAM, still doesn't work.Â

Yesterday I downloaded and installed Lion. After a while I tried to open one of the disk images that I have stored on the harddrive, which worked to mount prior to installing Lion. While attempting to open it, the process fails and gives the error "no mountable filesystems". I have searched for the error on the internet, and there does not seem to excist a solution to it. However, all the people with the same error, whcih did not have a solution, did not seem to have a similiar problems. Their problem lied with not being able to access disk images downloaded from the internet, while my disk image already excised on the hard drive before installing lion.
Many of the files and documents on the disk image are irreplaceable to me. I can not stress how important it is for me to recover them. If I am not able to do so, it will result in a massive economic loss.

Running Lion. Trying to recover files from two identical, old hard drive. Both are IBM Deskstars that used to run Windows. Using a Startech USB to IDE adapter. I was able to get 1 HD to mount, but it was not the one with the files that I need. The 2nd hard drive will not mount, nor does it show up in Disk Utility. I've downloaded Data Rescue 3, Disk Drill, Stellar Phoenix and Photo Rescue. But, still no luck. I've tried to mount it using Terminal, but no luck. Please help... I'm pulling out my hair and will be bald soon.Â

After upgrading to 10.7,4 I can no longer access my external IOMega Prestige drive. This drive is encrypted/protected via IOMega's Drive Protection software.
The following is in the kernel log after I enter the password for the drive.

I had two hard drives, "Macintosh SSD" (primary) and "Macintosh HD"(secondary). I put my home directory into "Macintosh HD", and it works fine. However, last night i mistakenly rename the "Macintosh HD" to "MacintoshHD" through the finder's "get info". Now I cannot log in!I believe it's the problem of the changed name of mount point.
My previous home located at /Volumes/Macintosh HD/Users/myname Now, it locates at /Volumes/MacintoshHD/User/myname, thus it refuses to login. I don't know how to change it back through single user mode...

My imac became very slow all of a sudden (stalls when clicking and typing), 2-3 mths after Lion (not sure it's related), mount_hfs and syslogd taking up 80-99% of CPU in Activity Monitor. After digging online, checked my Console and found repeating messages exceeding 20,000+++. But I'm not sure what is being repeated (sample below).I've already turned off Time Machine.I was able to delete the syslogd activity, but still left with 99% mount_hfs, which 'maybe' related to the 20,000+++ repeated messages. Not sure if it's relevant...but I was digging through my asl folder, and it is up to 10g for a single date for some reason! Every time I boot up my iMac (27 inch, OS 10.7.3), I receive an error message labelled "Mount Notification quit unexpectedly". When I open the detail box, theatre is a lot in there, such as "Process: Mount Notification [377]" or "Parent Process: vendorservice [360]" but nothing that helps me identifying the problem, since I am not familiar with OS X as I would be with Windows 7 for example. It says that the error message is sent to Apple, but I had it for a couple of months now, so I doubt anything will happen from that that end.Â
The problem seem to start when I installed Parallels, which seem to work otherwise fine.

Since I will be using a SSD instead of a HD soon, I'd like to reduce the disk Writes.
Essentially, the updates to the "Read a file or Dir" time stamp are not needed (at least by me) and I'd like to remove that. On Linux, the best option is to add the "relatime" option to the mount options (in /etc/fstab). "relatime" prevents the "read" time stamp updates on files or directories (except if the read access time would be less than the last write).Â
On Mac OS Lion, how would I do that?
- /etc/fstab does not seem to contain the current filesystems entries (like '/')
- where/what is the equivalent of /etc/fstab on Lion
- what is the "relatime" option on Lion (if there is one)?Â

how to keep certain files from being looked up in ALL My Files finder search?
I have a folder that is Write Access only for me and No Access for everyone else for important files. This file is also locked. You can't click on it, open it, etc with out getting permission pop ups. Â
HOWEVER! When using Finder's All My Files it will actually show me those files in the locked folder! Plus I can Open them, Copy them etc! I have the path bar view turned on at the bottom and it's so messed up. I can click and open the file from there, but I can't click and open the folder containing it. Â
Thoughts on how to hide these folder contents from all my files search? I really don't want to hide each and every file, that's why they're in a folder.

Have a number of PC-created CD RW disks (UDF format) backups. Some will mount on the Mac Pro (Superdrive, Apple shipped, Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-112D). Those that don't mount can't be ejected except during a Restart. Disk Utility can't do anything with it--all useful options are grayed out. The drive appears in Disk Utility, as does the disk, but it's grayed out too.
View 1 Replies View RelatedCurrently running 10.5.1, skype crashes all the time as soon as I try to call or IM. Same for YHOO msgr. So I thought I go for an upgrade and downloaded the last update to 10.5.4 (560MB). As soon as I try to install the file the updater gets stuck in the first window (configuring installation). I left it alone because I thought it might needs some more time (Powerbook G4.1.5, 12"). Nope, after 3 hours still no moving along for the bar and I just end up shutting the machine down via the power button. I really would love to use skype and the other msgrs again, get the upgrade to work. Download the patch again? I don't even know where the already downloaded patch sits, if I can't install it I will certainly like to delete the 560MB.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI tried searching for a solution for this and can't find any. I've seen one other threat in here about similar problems but the variables in my case are different. Here's the thing, a friend of mine lent me her usb pen-drive. She uses it on a pc mostly at work. When she gave it to me she forgot to copy some files i needed so she plugged it into her macbook pro (one of the new ones from this year, intel, snow leopard and stuff), copied the files i needed on it and i took it home. I have an intel imac, bought on april 2009. I plugged the usb pen-drive on my keyboard usb port and nothing happened. So i took it out, plugged it in again and nada. I did it a 3rd time and this time it showed me a message saying that this pen-drive needed more power and i had to try plugging it into a different usb port. So i plugged it in the back of my imac and nothing happened, not even the "insufficient power" message. It doesn't mount, won't show up in the desktop nor in the sidebar of a finder window.
I checked the disk utility and the pen-drive shows up there. I see the "main" pen-drive and it's "partition" (i dunno how to call it... mmm... you know, like you're seeing the "parent" drive and its "son" drive but they're "one and the same") and i can see its tech info and i noticed it's formatted NTFS. Since it worked just fine on my friend's macbook pro, i can't figure out why isn't it working in my imac. I know macs can't write NTFS, only read (mine doesn't at least) but hers wrote info in the pen-drive no prob. Another thing i noticed is that the "son" drive is grayed out. I can see its tech info but it's grayed out. Verifying the drive simply shows a message saying "Verify volume failed: Invalid request.".
So, i have no clue as to what's going on. I could give it back and ask my friend to format it as journal or whatever it's called to be mac os compatible and copy the info back again, but i don't know if that'd be a solution until i'm able to try it in a few days. Can't ask her to format it fat32 since the file i need is larger than 4gb, so yeah. Any clues as to what could be the problem? I even tried unplugging any usb peripherals and no dice.
