OS X V10.7 Lion :: Apps Frozen On Desktop Screen While New Ones Load?
Apr 25, 2012
Suddenly on start up from sleep mode I have prior windows of my email client and my browser (Entourage and Chrome) frozen. I have both of these set as start up items and new versions will open and are operative but the old windows for both remain like a screen shot. Along the menu bar is a 'ghost' image-a menu bar in faded gray and slightly blurred- behind the exiting one that is operable. I have repaired permissions, re set pram...it will not go away or move. I am on mcp OS 10.7.3. Have not installed anything newm in last few days.

I have 3 user ids on my imac, 2 are admin and one is not. When trying to upload a lot of photos onto the desktop of one admin user id the screen froze. Absolutely nothing works, you can't click on anything and the keyboard does nothing! It has only affected this user id, the other 2 are fine. I have tried restart, verify disc, repair disc, virus scan.

I have the Macbook Pro 13" OS.X. Lion and can't change my desktop background [it's frozen to what I changed it to almost a month ago]. I've looked to drag out the "com.apple.systempreferences etc" file but I can't find it in my Library>Preferences.

My macbook desktop is frozen, only desktop. Everything else works fine. I logged into my other account on the computer I have, the desktop is fine, I can right click the desktop and it will bring the menu up, however, on the side that I use frequently, I cannot right click on the desktop, NOR can I drag anything to the desktop. All my software is up to date, I tried booting up in safe mode, I also used the force quit and relaunch, restarted computer many times, still nothing. Also weird about this is that itunes deleted itself earlier today, I had to re-download and install it again. The problem is happening since then. Finally, I read somewhere I may need to re-boot my computer with the lion CD; however, I don't have the CD I downloaded from the app store!

My 11" MacBook Air recently just started randomly switching from full screen apps back to the desktop by itself without me using the 4-fingered swipe to change desktops/apps. I've tried quitting (almost) every app and no matter what app is left open, it keeps sliding from the full screen app back to the desktop. I've rebooted the laptop a good three times and it's also been fully shut down and turned back on twice and it still keeps switching.

Ever since I upgraded to Lion from 10.6.7 a couple of weeks ago and then up to 10.7.4, one desktop picture appears off to the left and a little high. The other picture is a no-show. I have an 2010 27 iMac with a Dell 30" u3011 as a 2nd display, using an Apple Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter. The Dell's on the left set up vertically with the menu bar. The iMac on the right is horizontal. On startup, the iMac's desktop image aligns to the Dell's left side, runs across the top half of the Dell and ends a little onto the iMac.
The image gets cropped at the top. The Dell's image doesn't appear at all. I'm guessing it is offstage to the left? Where the iMac's image does not reach is a light gray, something a bit darker the Solid Gray Light. Everything functions fine: mouse, Finder, apps, but, still, what gives?? No monitor issues before Lion. The only fix I've found is temporary until the next restart or startup.I change the screen resolution and then change it back. Occasionally, this fix has survived a couple shut downs or restarts.
What I've also tried: Resetting the PRAM and the unplugging everything for 2 minutes trick. No good. I was using personal .png images. I shifted back to the default galaxy shot. I tried putting the menu bar on the iMac. I tried the other user account which is barebones and seldom used. nope. Several times, I deleted com.apple.desktop.plistcom.apple.desktop.plist.lockfilecom.apple.preference.desktopscreeneffect.plist Problem recurred right away. I typed killall Dock in Terminal. This worked to restore the desktop images right away, but the problem recurred on startup.

Basically, I can't use the mail application. Every time I open Mail it just freezes and I have to force quit
Since the last time I've successfully used the Mail App, I haven't installed or downloaded anything. BUT I did notice that the next day my MacBook couldn't wake, I had to manually restart it.

I have a 2007 2.2Ghz "Santa Rosa" MBP, which I've had quite the problems with for the past 3 (soon to be 4) years. Just starting this week, if I'm on Safari or iChat for instance, Mac OS X freezes and everything stops... yet the mouse cursor can still move. Very soon, the screen starts flashing black and white over the frozen screen (with Safari, iChat, or whatever still open and visible behind the intense flickering). This flickering only goes on for a few seconds though; but the system remains frozen, requiring a manual shut-down and reboot.
Any ideas what's going on? It just started recently. Software has been completely up to date. Somehow I'm paranoid that the graphics card issue is coming back to haunt me again (I've had it replaced once already) but it doesn't seem like that's it.

My desktop has frozen three times in the past week. A couple other times my icons are moved over about 3 inches like the desktop starts there but the other things, windows and taskbar, are in the same spot. All other programs and dock are fine. I have to restart to get these things to go away. Anybody know anything about this? i have a aluminum macbook 2.4 ghz.

I just install Lion 10.7 from scratch using a bootable DVD I made from the Install Mac OS X Install ESD Dmg found within the app. After restoring my accounts and data from a time machine backup, everything seems to work fine except for 3 preference panes within the System Preferences, (Desktop & Screen Saver, Energy Saver, and Spotlight.) I've tried reinstalling Lion over the current installation, I've tried reinstalling the latest combo update, I've trying repairing disk permissions, I've tried installing System Preferences app as well as each individual .prefpane, none of which worked. When trying to run the preference pane I get:Â
"Preferences Error. Could not load Desktop & Screen Saver preference pane." Replace Desktop & Screensaver part with Energy Saver and Spotlight respectively for each pane. When I run the preference pane, here is the output from the console:Â
3/19/12 6:13:04.765 PM System Preferences: [NSPrefPaneBundle instantiatePrefPaneObject] (/System/Library/PreferencePanes/DesktopScreenEffectsPref.prefPane): principalClass is nil.Â
All three give the same error, again replacing DesktopScreenEffectsPref.prefpane with the corresponding pane.

When i log onto my old eMac under my profile, it loads the wallpaper and the toolbar but nothing else. Whenever the mouse passes over the desktop itself, it just turns into that little pinwheel that signifies a problem. Whenever I try to use Finder, it locks the computer up completely. All applications on the toolbar work, including firefox and iTunes, but since Finder is broken I can't use things like external drives. Is there any way to get my computer to halt whatever process is confusing my poor finder without hurting my iTunes?

I have replaced the "Login Items" functionality with an Automator app that runs when I log in. It asks if I want to load all my startup items now, or just cancel it. I have several startup items, including some utility apps, but also bigger apps like Safari and iTunes.Â
I currently do this by "Get Specified Finder Items" providing a list of the apps, and then "Open Finder Items," opening all of them at once so they are all loading up simultaneously. I then wait for a while until my CPU has calmed down and everything is ready to go (which is the reason for moving them to an Automator workflow in the first place; I can cancel loading if I don't want to wait).Â
Would it be better to open one, wait for it to load, open the next, etc.? Would this have any effect on performance as far as either the time it takes to load up or the efficiency of the computer as it operates with all of these things loaded?Â

The Mac OS X on the system has suddenly frozen her out of everything but the finder and the desktop. It boots fine and pops up on the desktop, and everything looks completely normal. But when you want to run an application and click on it, a big fat question mark appears over the icon in the bottom menu, no matter what application you click on. Further more it appears that all applications has been wiped from the system when you enter the applications folder. It is completely empty.
Now I've tried to click on different stuff, such as the internet, to turn it off, but nothing happens. I've also tried to enter the OSX preferences, but nothing happens when I do. At times it comes up with the message that you don't have permission to open certain programs, even though the programs apparently dont exist on the Mac. I've interrogated my girlfriend about her activity, and she swears she has done nothing out of the ordinary like download shady software or anything, and apparently all of this has come like lightning from a clear sky.

iMac starts up as normal. Once it is on desktop, will not open anything. Have new snow leopard to install, put disk in and it pops up on desktop, however just like anything else I cannot click or open it. I have unplugged, restarted, used command-option-escape( which does bring up "Force quit" box, but again I cannot click open or select anything.

I've had the new macbook air just two days now. Turned it on this morning, used it for like 5 minutes and the screen just started flickering, and the whole machine just froze on me! Had to do a system reset, but I'm a little concerned after spending over a grand on this macbook! Has anyone else experienced this? I'm actually thinking about returning the machine..

When installing apps through Installer (from .dmg disk images and .pkg packages), everything works smoothly until it asks me for a password. When I enter it, Installer goes back to the screen before it asked me for the password. When I click next, it asks me for my password, and the cycle repeats. I tried removing my password to no avail. I can install .pkg files from the sudo installer -pkg command. I dont know how to do this for installers that are in app form.

Maybe I expect too much, or need to learn about some networking or other tweaks to help things along, but I feel like my Mac Pro has disappointing performance.
I've got an Early 2008 Mac Pro, dual quad core Intel Xeon 2.8 GHz processors, 12 GB of memory, 1.6 GHz bus, gigabit ethernet to a 25Mbps/25Mbps fiber (Fios) connection, have run namebench to find the fastest name servers possible, and I still feel like my Mac Pro is slow. Just popped in a 500GB Momentus XT Hybrid Drive to replace the 78Mbs 320GB drive that came stock to help things along. Helped speed boot times and common app load times a lot, but after things are loaded, not much is notably faster.
OK, so I let Firefox get out of hand sometimes and I have 100+ open tabs, 4 open browsers (and sometimes 2 or 3 versions of Firefox running different profiles) -- Firefox, Opera, Chrome, Safari -- ssh tunnels and sessions galore, Evernote, Time Machine, and VMware running some video monitoring software (Dog Poop Cam -- gonna catch whomever is letting their dog crap in my yard).
Even shutting software hogs down and then trying to play Team Fortress 2, granted at 1920x1200 pushing to limits of the ATI Radeon HD 2600, things are still feeling slow. TF2 in Windows seems much faster and more responsive on the same hardware -- maybe that's just the fault of Steam or Apple's lack of up-to-date drivers, but frustrating nonetheless.
Load average is usually 0.5 to 1.0, sometimes reaching 2.0 (full load would be 8.0), memory usage is at 50-60%, and disk activity is reasonable. What is wrong? What can I tweak to improve things? Are my expectations simply too high?
