airport utilities not updating on 10.7.4 from v 5.5.3 to 5.6 nor 6.0, what can I do?

I have a Macbook (white unibody) running Snow Leopard. I have a personal wireless network using an Airport Extreme and I have an external hard drive (WD) connected to the Airport Extreme. I use this hard drive for my Time Machine Back ups.
I just got back from a trip and tried to back up my time machine. I got the error that the back up disk is not available. I then tried to open the airport utilities.
It tells me that "Airport Utilities is unable to find any Airport Wireless devices". I find this doubly strange because I have no problem connecting to the internet on this wireless network which supposedly does not exist.
I was able to get my iTunes streaming to my airport express last night after much frustration. I have a question though. In order for me to stream music to my stereo I have to direct my airport utilities to the express manually, and when linked to it I lose my internet access. Is this the normal routine, or should I be able to do both at once and never have to manually switch the airport utilities? After reading all the trouble people have had with the AE, I guess I should just be happy it's actually working. I started to question the purchase after some research.
View 3 Replies View Relatedi am currently using snow leopard, and I am waiting for this summer to update to mountain lion. Right now, I need the a new feature of imovie for my project, so I am thinking about buying Life 11 at this moment. However, I just want to make sure that, will updating my OS X includes updating my imovie, iphoto and everything? If yes, then I probably dont need to buy Life 11 to update my imovie now/

Am I right in thinking it's better to leave your Mac alone and maybe run disk utility once in a while. Will regular use of Onyx, Memory Freer, Disk Diet etc slow down the Mac and cause more problems longer than benefits they give you in the short-term.I do use these apps regularly especially Onyx. I have noticed the beach ball appearing recently and I have read tonight that programs like Onyx can slow down your machine.

I'm tired of having to jump thru hoops to replace files in my Utilities folder with updated versions. First I have to move the old file to the trash, but I have to enter my password. Then I copy the new file to the Utilities folder but, again, I have to enter my password. Much less user friendly than older versions of Mac OSX (and even Classic). I'm guessing it has to do with security, though I can replace files in the Applications folder without so much effort.I'm guessing the permissions of the Utilities folder have to be changed but changed to what? I want to be able to simply drag an updated application file to the Utilities folder and replace the old one without so much effort.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI have 10.5.8 and I'd like to upgrade to 10.6.8 to play Diablo 3. It seems like I first have to buy and install 10.6 and then need to buy and install 10.7 to upgrade to the latest OS. That seems strange. Do I really need to buy each version? There isn't just one pack I can get?

I am in the process of updating the new Lion firmware update and the little spinning disk is still spinning after about 45 minutes. Is this common?

Itunes, and App store, safari and even Software update all crash within seconds of been launched. .There is more, but decided not to post it unless its neccesary. Â Things I have tried already:
- Installed the combo update 10.7.4
- Verified disks: They are all good
- Installed a fresh update of itunes
- Checked for Flashback virus, and even installed java 2012 - 003.Â
I get this crash message: Â

if you have recently reinstalled or updated Lion to 10.7.4, and you have come across the 'iPhoto needs you to update, in order to run' message when trying iPhoto. And, if you have followed the prompts only to be faced with no software to download... The solution is to manually update to iPhoto 9.1 and then to run the updater again. Version 9.3 will be offered and everything should be back to normal thereafter. [URL]

I would like to create a Smart folder that only has applications & utilities in a sub-folder.Â
This will be similar to the default applications folder that shows in the dock, but without all the extra files & folders - just a list of applications.Â
I can do this by esily by just having a smart folder of applications showing only type=application.
However, I would still like to have utilities in a sub-folder.Â
If thats not possible, then it would be OK to have 2 seperate smart folders, 1 for apps excluding utilities & 1 for utilities only.Â
Is there some way in the smart folder options i can exclude a sub directory?
The latest upgrade of AIrport Utility doesn't support my Airport extreme, but the old version 5.6.1 says it doesn't work in Lion. How was I managing my Airport before th 6 update? What do I do now? Will I have to get a new Airport?
I have DSL service. I have an iPod Touch and an iPad 1 that I'm trying to connect. I just upgraded both iDevices to iOS5. I've been having trouble keeping an internet connection live for them, but now I can't even get the wi-fi to connect.

When I run software update, it tells me my software is up to date. But I know for a fact it is not. I have Lion 10.7.2, and I know that 10.7.3 was released. Why won't my software update pick this up? Could it be because my internet connection is too slow and it could be timing out? I am overseas, so the wifi connection is pretty slow, just thought that may be it, but not sure.Â
