OS X :: Empty Apps Folder - Is It Normal
Sep 20, 2009so I realized that my Home Apps folder is completely empty.
Yet the Apps folder in the sidebar of the Finder window has everything.
Is this normal?

Feb 21, 2009I have no idea what happened. it was working fine last week, and then the other day I tried to open up iMovie and i get "The operation could not be completed / An unexpected error occurred (error code -10810)" This happens every time i try to open anything in my applications folder. the programs on my dock open up fine.

Dec 18, 2009I have a new 21.5" iMac and have been playing around with everything. When I started two weeks ago I had an Apps folder with the Apps logo on the dock to the right of the dotted separation. All the applications are there lined up with the first application showing but for my consternation I cannot put the Applications in there folder like it was when I started out two weeks ago. This is the Snow Leopard OS.

Feb 11, 2010I accidentally dropped my "Applications Folder" off my Dock when I first got my Mac and it disappeared. When I put it back by dragging the applications folder onto the Dock, instead of assuming the Applications Folder logo, it took on the logo of the first application in my Applications Folder: the Address book. Now, my desktop permanantly has the picture of the Address Book instead of the picture of the Applications Folder.
How do I fix this? ive followed other thread advice with no luck. Is there a way to re-set the Dock? Where does the logo live and how do I get it back there?

May 3, 2012I recently installed OS X Lion. In my users/name folder I had a folder I named "Fonts Unused" that was right under my actual Fonts folder, where I put different styles in that I wasn't using... to save memory. I put the styles in the normal Fonts folder as needed. Since Lion, those folders are all GONE! I'm talking hundreds of great fonts I'd collected over the years.

Then i click on properties and it say that the folder has 7GB but there are no files in it. Are the files hidden or what can I do to see them?

Nov 12, 2008I'm a longtime PC user who just got a macbook. I copied all my picture files to my macbook and opened up iPhoto. I used the "Import to Library" option to load all my pictures. I noticed that iPhoto copied all my photos to a Photo Library file under the Pictures folder.
Why does iPhoto make copies of the pictures and store them in a separate "file"? This makes it confusing because I have all the pictures that I originally copied but then when I'm in iPhoto, the program is actually accessing the pictures from this separate location.
- Is iPhoto not able to just read files from a normal folder structure?
- How do I manage/organize individual picture files if I'm not within iPhoto?
- How do I burn picture files to a CD/DVD if I can't see the individual pictures when not in iPhoto?

May 26, 2012I've been struggling to move my data (photos / music etc) from my old G5 imac to my new imac (lion).Had iphoto all sorted (copied the files from external HD to Pictures folder.But now when I click on 'photos' it opens terminal (!!??)*I can see the files within but only if I CTRL click and choose 'open package'.I really don't understand. I just opened iphoto and it says I have to 'upgrade' again.I did just attempt to open the original iphoto library which is still on the connected hard drive but I didn't upgrade and don't know why that would affect the duplicate library on my new imac?

Mar 23, 2009I went through and deleted a lot of stuff then when I was emptying the trash it said that there was a locked file so I found out were it was pulled it out and then got rid of everything else there are about 720 locked files in the folder then I tried to find a quicker way to delete it then I found out how to unlock them so I went to pull them out but it just made a copy of it so now and I put it back in the trash not thinking about how that just adds on to the files so how can I get them out or make it so I can press continue just once for them all to go away.

May 1, 2012One of the best things I ever did was to setup a folder in my email that auto empties itself after 90 days. its great to use as a holding place for emails that I need to hold onto for a short period of time, but then want to make go away. shipping confirmations are a great example.
I'm interested in doing the same thing with a desktop folder. I know that time machine and what not gives me recovery options for things I delete, but this is a bit different. This is for items that I want to delete, just not right now. What I'd like it to do is delete items after they've been in the folder for some specified period of time, like 60 or 90 days.

May 9, 2012My application folder appears to have "split" from the applications shortcut in the Finder window. The shortcut under Favorites contains all my applications, while the folder itself contains none...When I get info on both of them, I see the following:
App Shortcut: "Where: /"
App Folder: "Where: /Users/SarahSteeds"
Also, I've only had one new software download that saved itself to the Applications folder (at location "/Users/SarahSteeds"). All others have been directed to the shortcut (at location "/")

Mac Pro (early 2009), 8 core
Bay 1: OS X drive - 10.6.2
Bay 2: Boot Camp drive (Windows XP SP3, running Boot Camp drivers v3.0)
Bay 3: Storage drive (HFS+ formatted)
When I boot into Windows, my OS X drive is perfectly viewable, except that the /Users/username folder appears to be completely empty, if I manually type a path (such as D:UsersusernameDesktop or D:UsersusernameDownloads) then the contents will show up perfectly, but when navagating to the D:Usersusername, Windows shows that folder as empty. I'm running just the Boot Camp 3.0 drivers (i.e. no Macdrive), but I also have VMWare Fusion 3.0 installed on my OS X drive, with my Boot Camp partition set up as a virtual machine. Could this be masking the folder contents from Windows?

May 8, 2010Im recently registered but have been lurking the site for a few months now waiting for the new MBPs to come out. They came out and I got one (my first mac) but I have 2 issues.
1. There is a folder in my documents folder, from a program i manually installed via CD that keeps reappearing. Everytime i delete it, it comes back when i restart the computer. I have already uninstalled the program, but the empty folder keeps coming back.
2. Also, when i try and right click -->open with a video file, VLC comes up twice, any way to make it only appear once?
