ITunes :: Sharing With Windows 7 PC And MacBook Pro With Lion

Mar 20, 2012

At the moment I have my iTunes on my Windows 7 PC but as I a have just got a Macbook Pro (with Lion) I would like to be able to share iTunes between them without both having to be turned on as at present.

I have a copy of iTunes on my ReadyNAS Duo which works ok for my WDTV Live to my TV but does not give me the full selection of views ie no Grid View or Cover Flow View.

I was thinking about putting my iTunes onto my Time Capsule, which I belive my Macbook Pro should see ok via WiFi, would my Windows 7 PC be able to access the Time Capsule to share the iTunes content, as it is connected to the Time Capsule via ethernet (for Internet connection to my cable modem)

Is there a better way of doing this

I realise that using the Time Capsule for iTunes means it would not be backed up but i already have copies of iTunes

Sharing Mac ITunes Library With Windows PC

Mar 5, 2012

I recently purchased a 27" iMAC running OS X 10.7.3. This iMac is now connected to my home network/workgroup.

- I want to build a new iTunes Library on my 1TB internal Mac HD.

- I want my 3 non Mac Machines (1 XP Prof and 2 Windows 7 Home) to be able to view the contents of my new (not yet built) iTunes Library resident on my iMac and of course be able to

- play that content.

- have play counts from my Windows-based be saved back to my iTunes Library.

- be able to rate a song from any computer (Mac or Windows) within this iTunes Library and have that rating saved back to this iTunes Library.

I don't want to have to rely on iTunes "Shared Library" function. In other words I want all PCs to be able to read/write to the same iTunes Library file. Before I purchased my iMac, my iTunes Library existed on one of my Windows-file system external drives. The pre-requisites for allowing multiple Windows PCs to access/share/write to the same iTunes Library was to:

- share the Windows folder on the external drive in which the iTunes Library file was stored (allowing network users to be able to change the files), and

- make sure all Windows-based PCs ran the same iTunes software version.

I don't want to change the version of Windows iTunes software from the currently installed 10.5.0 version. Can my Windows PCs access and utilize the same iTunes library file that I plan to build on my iMac hard drive? What older version of Mac iTunes software should I install on my iMac in order to allow the Windows PCs to access and use the iMacs iTunes library file?

OS X :: ITunes Home Sharing Between IMac And Windows Laptop

Dec 4, 2009

I am trying to use Home Sharing between my iMac and a Windows Laptop. I have setup home sharing on each computer, but for some reason i can only see shared icon in my iMac iTunes library. On my Windows Latoptop the shared icon is not visible in the left hand pane. I have tried Authorising both computers, deauthorising both computers. Turning on, then off home sharing on each computer. I can still only see my laptops library on my IMac. When I really want to see my iMac's library on my laptop, as I am using my laptop for music at a party. Has anybody had problems when tying to use Home Sharing between a Windows Computer and a Mac?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Sharing A Mac Printer To Windows 7 Via LPR Does Not Work

Apr 6, 2012

I had read an article explaining how to configure a Windows 7 PC to print to a shared Mac printer (in Snow Leopard, but I assume it's the same in Lion).

So I shared the printer (an IP printer) on my Mac, then followed the instructions to add LPR Printing to Windows 7. I went to and saw the CUPS page on my Mac, and the setup the LPR port on Windows 7 with the IP address of my Mac and the Queue name listed for the shared printer in CUPS.  Unfortunately, when I enter the port info and click OK, it comes back with the error page listed in the article.

I've tried this on two different iMac's (a new 27" and a much older iMac with Snow Leopard).  I also used three different Windows laptops (Windows 7 and Vista), and all three gave the same error. Basically, when I setup the LPR port, it cannot "talk" and confirm the settings with the Mac.

I've turned off Windows Firewall, tried basically everything I can think of (and I'm a tech, so I've tried a lot!).  Anyone successfully printed to a shared Mac printer from a Windows 7/Vista PC?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Updated But Now HDD Sharing With Windows 7 Is Not Working?

Jun 26, 2012

I recently upgraded to Lion (desktop not server) and now my HDD sharing with Windows 7 is not working like it used to. If I boot back in to Snow Leopard (diferent HDD) it's all working fine.  My windows 7 PCs can access my shared Mac Pro RAID no problem. If I boot in to Lion they can 'sometimes' connect but mostly not.  To get them to connect I seem to have to use the IP address instead of the system name (\MACPROLIONRaid) like I used to with SL.Nothing changed on the Windows 7 system at all, other than now I get the infuriating dialog tellmy my password is incorrect. Some unknown sequence of rebooting one or both machines, sometimes multiple times, will let me access the mac, but I have no idea what's going on here.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Computer Id In File Sharing Is The Old One Before Joined Windows Domain?

May 24, 2012

I just installed Lion 10.7.4 named my computer "fx6800". Then I joined my Windows 2003 Server domain with no problems. After that I could not log on to domain with one of my windows 7 machines because it had the same computer ID. Ok no problem I re joined the domain and re binded with the Win 7 machine and then un binded my Mac Lion machine then re-binded with a different computer ID. No problem both machines can log on to AD with separate computer accounts. Then I notice when I opened terminal it was showing the old computer ID. No problem I fixed it With sudo scutil --set HostName "new host name".

Then when I go to select file sharing in the description to the right under File Sharing On: it shows the path to tha machine is fx6800.domainname.local which is the original computer ID. Also when I select remote login and I believe it shows username@fx6800.domainname.local. I have searched for 2 days and have not come up with anything. I am sure if I reinstall everything it should fix it but I would like to save the time.

ITunes :: Music Sharing Vs Home Sharing?

Jul 4, 2012

I am trying to set up my home network to have the iMac share its' media library via iTunes, and access that media on other devices in the home.  I would like to use iTunes Music Sharing, which is a very simple setup on the iMac and doesn't require any Apple ID to be entered on the devices accessing the shared library.  However, I have found that the iPhone and iPad will not even see the shared media library when the iMac is set up to share its' library.

Only when I enable Home Sharing on the iMac, and configure Home Sharing on the iPhone and iPad, do I see the shared library available on those devices.

I would like to allow other family members in the household to access the shared media library without requiring them to have my Apple ID and password.  iTunes Music Sharing is supposed to allow this.

Does iTunes Music Sharing not work when trying to share to an iPhone or iPad?

MacBook Pro :: When Start To Stream A Tv Show From ITunes Via Home Sharing It Will Play Just For Few Minutes?

Apr 9, 2012

I have a iMac as our main computer which has the main iTunes account. I have a ethernet connection off a Time Capsule/Air Play Wireless to that. I just got a Apple TV 2 and that has been working nearly seamlessly via a wireless connect from the Time Capsule The problem is with the Mac Book Pro (early 2011, 17", 2.2 ghz Intel Core i7, 8GB DDR3, AMD radeon HD 6750 1024 MB Graphics, all updated on all software)What my twist is that when I start to stream a tv show from iTunes via home sharing it will play for 5-20 min and then just stop and return to the main iTunes menu This occurs on TV Shows purchased from Apple, From DVD's I have ripped with HandBrake and Bit Torrents I have also ripped with HandBrake (Into Apple TV 2 format) I've read over and over the Apple suggested trouble shooting. The only non Apple product/software in the mix is Norton for Mac on the Mac Book and the iMac however I have turned off the Firewall on that as well as experimented with turning on and off the Mac Firewall I have a older router from my ISP however the Apple TV is working fine so I *think* that has been elminated

OS X :: Sharing Windows DVD Drive To Mac

Jun 17, 2009

As I'm using pbg4, I'm not able to burn dvds. Therefore, I've decided to use my windows based dvd burner, which is on a separate PC. The os is windows 7; I've shared the dvd, as well as few partitions and folders and they show and work just fine under my mac os x 10.4.11, however, my mac doesn't see the dvd. I recently installed an update concerning dvd sharing, that basically added one additional service to my share preferences, but it didn't make any difference. Any ideas how to use my win dvd? And I have another similar question: as I mentioned, I have few shared items located at the same pc windows machine; the thing is that when the powerbook comes back from sleep, everything is unmounted, and I have to manually authenticate and mount every single resource I require, which is killing.

OS X :: Sharing Windows Printer?

Jan 16, 2010

We have 2 computers over here, one uses Windows Vista, the other is an iMac with OS X Snow Leopard. They're both connected to a hub, said hub is connected to the modem. The Windows machine has 2 printers connected to it, an HP DeskJet and an Epson Stylus.

Now, I would like to access one of those 2 printers from within OS X, so I can actually print without moving files between both computers through an USB stick or whatever. I've put both printers in Windows Vista on "Shared", but I can't seem to find them anywhere in OS X. So I guess I'm doing something massively wrong.

Below is a chart of how this "network" looks like.

So, is it possible like this to get access to the printers on the Vista machine from within OS X? If so, how do I properly set it up?

OS X :: File Sharing USB Drive With Windows 7

Nov 1, 2010

I have a USB drive with a 5.25" HD in it hooked up to my mini running SL. On the USB drive, I have a file shared in the File Sharing section of System Preferences. The only option I have enabled is "Share files and folders using SMB." The machine trying to access the files is Windoze 7. After I enable file sharing on the mini, the PC can see it. But if I go for a long time, lets say overnight, if I try to access the files when I turn the PC on, it can not see the folder on the USB drive. But if I go to the mini, turn File Sharing off and immediately turn it on, the PC can see the shared folder. At first I thought it was maybe the harddrive being idled down, but it is not as I tested that theory. So what can I do to make sure the PC can see the shared folder all the time without me having to go into System Preferences all the time to turn it off/on for this to work?

I never had a problem with Tiger, My Home folder would be shared and as long as you typed in the password access to it was fine. What I liked was my Home folder was the only folder you could access.

Now with Leopard, my home folder is shared, however so is my whole HDD, even if i had a usb drive plugged in at the time, that is shared too. Can I change this to so only my home folder is shared, like it was with Tiger. I have tried playing with the firewall and other sharing setting but cannot work it out.
