I've been trying to partition my drive to use bootcamp for the past 3 days now. I've done this before with ease and let me just say Apple (usually) makes this very simple.
I have 10.7, all updated and working properly with no disk errors (repaired/verified). Disk Utility won't partition my 500gb HDD into a 100gb windows partition along with a ~400gb OSX one, says some files cannot be moved. So everything I've read says to image the HDD (image saved on USB external terrabyte), restore to it via disk utility on boot from the image, and then to partition.
I created the image of Mac OSX successfully and saved it on the external. I rebooted and got into Disk Utility, selected the image in the left column, marked it as the source image, and then chose my internal HDD as the destination.
From the looks of it, I've done it all correctly. But I keep getting the same error... it says it needs to scan the image, I let it, and it goes for about an hour or two with the subscript "Block Checksum Partition #X". In this case, it is at #2, and when it gets toward the end of the scan, an error pops up saying "unable to scan (internal error)".
So I had to have my macbook pro HDD replaced (applecare) and I made a disc image backup beforehand and put it on my external HDD.
I just picked it up from the apple store today, and called tech support for help with restoring it from the disc image. I was instructed to put the install disc in and boot holding the 'c' key, then go to disc utilities, to the restore tab, find the image as a source, and then drag the internal HDD volume to the destination field. It didnt work, so I was transferred to a senior advisor, who told me to do the same thing. The only time it would work is if I dragged the indented one that reads "Macintosh HD" instead of the one with the GB size and brand name. The senior advisor told me that it wouldnt work for him either (dragging the volume) and dragging the macintosh HD isnt how it's supposed to work, so he couldnt guarantee a proper result. It didnt work anyway. I dont remember the error message.
So he starts telling me that the best option might be to install the operating system from the discs, update to 10.5.8, and then just copy the "user" folder and then move everything where it is supposed to be. I wasnt particularly impressed and I'm not convinced that it has to be that difficult or time consuming.
I take total bootable backups of my macbook pro with superduper application, to an external hard disk. In a few months I plan to buy a new mbp, and I would like to know if it is possible to 'copy' my whole osx system environment(applications, data, everything) to the new machine, using this superduper backup, with the appropriate restoration process.
Can I boot the mac from the external hard disk, then run superduper, and use 'copy' option of superduper to copy the osx environment from external hard disk to internal hard disk? I think that everything should work fine but I do not know if it will appear any new hardware/configuration problem.
I'm trying to restore an old Hard Drive image OS.dmg to a usb hard drive that I have. I'm using the command: dd if=/Users/Shared/OS.dmg of=/dev/disk5 bs=1m. And I'm getting, dd: /dev/disk5: Resource busy. What would cause this error? I'm not sure why it's "busy". I get the exact same thing when I try to do it in Disk Utility.
I recently decided to partition my hard drive on my macbook in order to install Windows 7, but upon doing so I was greeted with a message informing me that some files couldn't be moved and that I would have to reformat my HD. I created a backup disk image using disk utility and proceeded to erase and reinstall my OS. My OS is now reinstalled but I don't know how to go about using my backup to add all my old preferences, files, and applications. I've tried using restore through the disk utility but it isn't allowing me to do so. All I want are my old files and the ability to partition my drive!
I've got Windows 7 x64 Ultimate installed on my Crucial C300 SSD in the OptiBay drive and have backed up the image using WinClone prior to updating the SSD firmware. When checking the WinClone forums I noted that users have reported they were unable to restore their Boot Camp images to an SSD via WinClone. Some have even bricked their drives and have had to have them replaced.
Has anyone had success with the latest version or should I avoid restoring my WinClone image and perform a clean installation from scratch?
When a user copies an image from a browser into PowerPoint 2011 he gets text of a link back to the image, not the image itself. But if he copies from a browser into Word he gets the image, and can then copy the image from Word to PowerPoint. Same results with both Firefox and Safari. Behavior is new so I assume it relates to recent software updates but user does not recall accepting any.
I recently made a clone of my Windows XP Pro SP3 installation (its roughly about 14GB according to Finder/WinClone) so i made a 80GB partition on my 320GB drive and it gives me this error message:
the WinClone came from a 500GB internal drive and ive gotten winclone images to restore to a MBP before but not sure why its giving me this error code, anyway to restore the image to the new partition (which was created with Bootcamp) as i no longer have access to the old machine it was running on.
I made a Winclone image of my Boot Camp partition before upgrading my hard drive, and now I've come to restore the image to a new partition I get the following error: "Invalid Image: MBR Not Found" I get the same error whether I create the partition using Boot Camp Assistant or using Winclone. Anyone had this error before or know the cause?
I have a Macbook running on snow leopard and I wanna upgrade my internal hard drive as it is currently too small. I downloaded Carbon Copy Cloner and cloned my entire hard drive to an EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE. Now, I have that new internal hard drive from wester digital. What do I do with it? replace the current internal hard drive with the new harddrive and then how do I get the data from the external hard drive with my cloned data to the fresh western digital? Do I boot first from external hard drive etc? I am not sure what to do now?when I was given the option which hard drive to clone (or which part of the hard drive to clone) there was also the option to clone "Install Disk". I don't need to clone that, right?
I am doing a clean install of lion from the recovery HD, is it best to migrate the data back via TM back up, or clone? I don't have any programs that i don't a have disc for, and all i want to migrate is itunes, mail, and pic files etc. I have seen where migrating when you install is better than migrating later, so i want to be sure i have a clean clone, or back up, to migrate from. I also failed to write zero's over SL when i did a clean install for Lion, so it was not so clean. So i guess my question is just, clone, or TM back for migration?
I have a Core 2 Duo Mini Server (previous generation) running 10.7.4 (client, not server, single disk, no RAID). That system is configured exactly as I want. Can I clone that disk and boot a new i7 MacBook Pro (13" Oct 2011 model). I guess what I'm wondering is whether the system running on the older Core 2 Duo has the bits to support newer hardware in the newer machine... or maybe those item were left out during the install on the old machine because the installer detected that the hardware wasn't present.
I have a mid-2011 Macbook Air running the latest version of Mac OS X as well as a boot camp partition I run in VMWARE. I would like to buy the new Macbook Air and I am wondering if there is a way I can simply ghost/clone copy my SSD to the new computer to avoid having to reinstall programs, adjust settings, etc.?
I am copying data from a clone backup to another drive. After the copy I looked at the permissions and they are not the same as the source. When checking the source I do not see permissions for my logged in account. When I look at the destination I see Root has read-write permissions. BTW, I also logged in as root do to the copy because I was getting copy errors.
I just bought and installed snow leopard and when i did i restored to factory settings so i could start fresh. However i wanted to restore my itunes back to how it was, but i can seem to work it out. If someone could tell me an easy way to do
I just replaced my HD and I want to restore from my Time Capusle. However, my install disks for my MacBook Pro (late 2008) are Leopard, and I was using Lion.
Do I restore first from TC, or install Snow Leopard first (then I can't use Set-up Assistant)?

Well my Mac has been running slower and slower and I believe it's just about time for a clean install of OS X. Now this will be the first time I have to do this on a Mac so I don't want to jump in without some insight on some things.
First, is there any way I can keep my installed programs, and what (besides the Applications folder) should I back up for this? I'm thinking iWork, MainStage, and a couple of other large programs that I honestly don't want to lose configurations in or redownload (MainStage took me 3 days). I heard there's a way to restore just the operating system without affecting any user data. By the way I'm running the latest iteration of Lion and have a full (tested working) Time Machine backup running as well.
I am thinking about upgrading my Macbook Pro to Lion from SL. If sometime in the future I need to fully restore my laptop can it be restored directly to Lion or would I have to use my SL disk that came with it first and then upgrade to Lion again? I regularly back up with Time Machine.
I seem to have lost all my print settings. I have half a dozen settings I use between text and photoshop, etc. I did a full maintaince and must have cleared them.
I have a Time Machine and a clone copy of my system to use for restoring the files
I am getting following error after opening Ooo (Open Office org) "The application “OpenOffice.org” was forced to quit while trying to restore its windows. Do you want to try to restore its windows again?" And nothing is happening after pressing both available button "Restore Windows" or "Don't Restore Windows". Even when i am trying to shot down my system Ooo stops me for doing that.I have to force quite it before restarting/shutting down my system. Nothing is happening when i am trying to opening any doc or xls file i am getting same window every time. I have also tried to install new updated version of Ooo, but problem still exist.
Steps I followed.
1- Selecte OOo from application list and Make move to trash.
2- Selecte OOo folder from /Users/Fauad/Library/Application Support and make move to trash.
3- Empty the trash.
4- Install OOo new version.
5- Run it
I have read post about command for terminal like rm -rf .DS_Store i have tried running it in Appplication, Library/Application support, or on Desktop as well but nothing changed. As far as i remember the problem is because i have forced quite all open application before shtting down my system.
So I recently purchased a MacBook Pro and used Migration Assistant to transfer my files. I realized after that I should have transfered right at the beginning when I had the chance for Setup Assistant, because I have a lot of files that require permission from my other user account on my old MacBook. I went to Disk Utilities, and there were two options to "Erase Free Space", some Toshiba thing and Macintosh HD (I am assuming was the hard drive that was transferred). I pushed "Erase Free Space" and closed down disk utility, but it looks like it didn't delete my hard drive because all the applications and files are still there. I am now reinstalling OS X Lion hoping it will bring me back to that first screen where it askes if i want to transfer from another computer. Am I doing this right? I feel like I'm gonna mess something up and i've already wasted 5 hours already trying to fix my primary mistake of using Migration.
I'm running Safari 5.1.3 on imac on 10.7.3. I just synced my ipad to computer. On my bookmarks bar on the ipad I had only 2 bookmarks. On the computer I had a whole bunch. Same with bookmarks menu. After the sync, on my computer, it had deleted all the bookmarks on my bookmarks bar, and only left me the 2 that were on the ipad. Same with bookmarks menu. Seems to have affected bookmarks bar and menu only. Rest of bookmarks are OK.I have an external backup drive and backed up a week ago. But, have never had to restore anything. What's the procedure to restore the bookmarks bar and menu in Safari, using time machine?
Had to reinstall system. All back up with Time Machine. Finally got everything re-installed but cannot figure out how to re-install and restore Safari Bookmarks.
I have been using OS X 10.9.4 for a while and wondered if i could go back to mountain Lion ver of operating system as a couple of my older devices don't seem to have drivers available. e.g. printer and scanner ?
In my office one of my iMac's suffered a complete system crash.I am reinstalling OS X Lion as I write this post. The iMac was backed up to an external hard drive using time machine. After the new install of Lion how do I grab my user files from the machine backup?
My dad bought this Mac which had already installed lion OS X, but I jus restored it to faculty settings and whenever I try to install the OS it takes forever to do something and just ends up telling me to try again.
I have an brand new HD that I want to restore from TimeMachine. Erased and partitioned this brand new drive. Created 2 partitions and formatted as “OS Extended Journaled/ GUID.”
Did a “Command R recovery boot” and went through the steps to backup from TM to my new HD. 15 seconds into the restoration process Msg. reads: “Error occurred while restoring from the backup.Restart your computer and then try restoring again.”
Trouble shooting:
Luckily my original files and initial boot drive that TM was backing up from remains fine and I performed some more TM back ups as well as a TM backup onto another drive as well.
I even tried restoring to another empty drive with older backups and backups off of another HD and got the same error message. All my BU’s and BU attempts have been within 10.7.3 on the same MP.

I have an old MBP that I am replacing with a new Retina Display MBP. Last night I did a full backup of my entire MBP (there are actually 2 hard drives in it, I took out the optical drive and used an OWC kit).Today, I restore that backup to my new MBP. I set it to restore everything. However, it only restore the one drive as my new MBP does not have 2 hard drives. I know the 2nd drive is in the Time Machine backup. So how do I manually go in and retrieve those items?
trying to restore from time machine. I restart holding down the command and R key but the menu does not start. I also tryied verifying my hardware restarting holding the D key and the diagnostics does not start also?
