This one part has never seemed quite right moving from PC to Mac for me. I'm most used to Windows Explorer - the old XP style, working in a single window. I find that with Finder, to copy/paste or move files, I can't always just select files and paste/copy them to the new location. and some things seem to require having multiple Finder windows open and a drag/drop.
Maybe I'm missing something in the process/workflow and its possible to solely work easily in a single Finder window? It doesn't seem to always allow you to do a copy or cut when you right click on a selection of files in Finder.
I just tried to move a bunch of file from the desktop to a folder on the desktop and it copied them - normally it would move them how is this please (I was not touching the control key)

When I try to move a file from the laptop to the external, I get a message saying that the operation can't be performed because of error code -50.

Ever since I installed Lion last year on another iMac, and now on my current iMac, whenever I hold down option and click the red close button on a Finder window to close all open windows, the Finder crashes. It doesn't happen every single time, but enough to really make me angry.

When coping files I have always held down 'option' to copy the file. A small green plus symbol appears and the files then copy into the target folder, or hard drive.Â
I have a Mac Pro, with the latest updates of Yosemite .... but now the files are moving and NOT copying. Â
So when I back something up, they are no longer in the original location, only where i have copyied them to. They disappear.Â
Should I be using cut and paste instead?

I have one user account with small (say 9pt) Sidebar items in the custom list of Folders/Places. That user was migrated from Leopard but I do not recall if it came over like that or I set it up. In another user on same MBP the Sidebar items are significantly larger (say 13pt) and I would like to change them to be about 9pt like my other user account.

10.8 and 10.9 become a headache copying/moving files/folders between disks. After download selected images to my Imac from cards I used to move all of them to a local network backup disk (attached to a linux OS)
I don't do this anymore from a year ago: annoying warnings like "the file ... is in use" (not in use, even had been downloaded) stopped move; repeated procedure with the rest of the files included the 'used' one, over and over again and finally, after 12 times or so all files had moved. 100 files to move, stop, 80 files to move, stop, 60 files.......Â
Same problem moving files between disks attached to the same iMac.'You have to provide an admin password...." -> Continue  Password set and again 'File ... is in use' (not in use, it is just backup file)Reseting the Mac. Worse
.'You have to provide an admin password...."Â No 'Continue' option, just only 'Ok' that will do.... nothing. My solution: Terminal: sudo mv source targetÂ

Last night I installed VMWare Fusion and Windows 7 on my Unibody MBP running SL. When I use Fusion, my computer slows to a crawl. I spent a few hours getting Windows set up and installing software last night.
I would like to try using Boot Camp instead, but do not want to lose all of the software and files that I have installed. Is it possible to set up Boot Camp, and keep the same Windows setup?
Is there (or will there ever be) any way to change the white default color of finder windows in column and list views? Or is there a 3rd party app? You can change them in icon view but that's the only view I never use. My eyes get so tired staring at white all day. If I could make all my windows dark grey I could work longer, better, happier. Would also love to make the Mail app dark.

When I close a finder window, the finder menu disappears and then reappears along with the finder window. It looks like finder is crashing and restarting. This started happening after I downloaded a pdf and put it in a folder. Maybe there is a bug in the way finder is rendering the image of the pdf file at the top of the finder window?Â
How can I restore normal behavior of finder?
