OS X V10.7 Lion :: Just Tried To Install Recent Updates - Now Mac Won't Boot
Jun 12, 2012
Clicked restart and was presented with a screen that said "none of the software updates could be installed, an unexpected error occurred" I clicked OK, was left with blank screen that did nothing. So I powered down, and restarted, now I'm presented with a Unix screen indicating "unable to find driver for this platform" and a window instructing me to restart.
Restarting in any mode, shift, command, command s, etc will not move me past the Mac OS version not yet set screen. This is a mess. I installed Lion over the Internet and do not have a startup disk I can use to recover and reinstall to even restore from my Time Capsule ... Isn't there a way I can install over the Internet?

I was prompted to install updates, it was the Thunderbolt Update and Application Loader. Both must be somewhat recent as I applied some updates a week ago. When the system rebooted it stuck on the gray screen. The apple logo never even comes on the screen. I have tried Safe Mode etc. but it never even makes it to the Apple logo. System has been running fine and normally boots in just a few seconds.

I finally narrow down my computer issue and it is not related to Spotlight or either the Time Machine, it is something else that is crashing and causing the drop of speed. I have enclosed the crash report and the activity monitor to give a better idea of my computer.
My system resources:
- HD with over 300Gb of space
- 8Gb of RAM (most of the time 4Gb RAM free)
I have plenty of computer and resources and it isn't a issue related to hardware but software. There is something in the processing that still going on that I do not know.

I have my work portfolio on iWeb, and a few other sites and am about to start another site, and wanted to check something: I read somewhere about there not being recent updates for iWeb, and wanted to make sure that nothing drastic is changing, basically that iWeb is still going strong and will be around for a good long time. .

Suddenly I have lost all the notes I have added / changed in the last three weeks or so! This is borderline catastrophic for me, lots of important stuff.Â
Very weird; I did not lose any other info (calendars or addresses, etc.), only Notes. And it happened across all devices / places (iPhone, iMac, iCloud).Â
The only recent event that can possibly have something to do with this (I don't know how) is that I purchased a new Macbook Air and did a Migration Assistant. Again, the odd thing is that Notes was the only thing affected. how I can retrieve them?? (I have synced since losing them. Mail & Notes are being pushed through iCloud.)Â

Minutes after receiving the Apple Security Update in my email, I quickly ran the system wide Apple Software Update (OS X Lion 10.7.4, Macbook Pro8,2). With the iTunes update came two other updates. The first update was for iPhoto '11. The second update was for the Thunderbolt to support Gigabit Ethernet. To the best of my knowledge, all went well with downloading. It was a hefty update, the iPhoto '11 update alone being 599.65 MB. After installation, a dialog appeared allowing the user to "Restart now" or later. A firm believer in immediately restarting the computer when it tells me to, I did so. Once the desktop faded, my mac began installing my updates as the updates could not have been installed while core system services were running. In about 10 minutes, the progress bar had reached the end, but a peculiar dialog appeared. It said that the updates that I wanted installed, were not installed. I pressed the only button on the dialog which removed the dialog box and left me with the empty wallpaper of the same texture as the iOS 5 Notification Center, the same wallpaper used during Mac Recovery during bootup. After another 10 minutes, nothing had changed; I was still staring at this lovely wallpaper. Knowing things had gone sour, I held down the power button for a few seconds until it turned off. After turning the computer back on, and booting into Mac OS X, I was, and still am, faced with a few lines of text.Â
Now I am unable to boot into Mac OS X.There is no recovery partition (as I'm triple booting, which apparently mac doesn't like), but I have booted into a Recovery-ish mode using the Lion Internet Recovery. I have verified the disk: no problems found, a good solid green line saying everything's ok. I went ahead and clicked on repair, to which it did not report fixing anything. I am currently booted into my Windows 7 (also noted my Windows is running incredibly slow, possibly just a placebo effect of me losing my Mac OS X) in which I am typing this. I have my Mac OS X backed up via Time Machine from earlier this morning but I would still like to not have to wipe hard-drive, install Snow Leopard upgrade to Lion, install Windows 7, install linux, and then restore respective operating system's data. Â Is there ANY possible way I can make my Mac OS X bootable again? Or even re-installing Snow Leopard/Lion without touching the partitions behind it?Â

So a while back I had final cut pro installed, and eventually deleted cause I no longer needed it. I used AppCleaner when removing to try and make sure I got it all.
Well every time I do a software update it wants to install "Pro Applications Update" and "Prokit Updates" Which are updates for final cut pro and its related apps.
Any idea how I can stop it from wanting me to install these updates for something I no longer have?

Im having my first ever problem with a Mac, bummer! I have tried Googling an answer, but didn't find anything specific enough for my situation.Last night I installed the SL Graphics Update, hoping to be able to run Starcraft 2 on a higher setting.
Anyways, I installed it, and now the computer wont boot. It is stuck on the gray screen with the spinning symbol. It appears to be installing the software update, since it shows a gray progress bar, but then once that finishes, it just stays on the gray screen with the spinning symbol and goes nowhere after that.
I have a Macbook Pro available to use, if I need to target the disk. Not sure how to do that though, just found that idea in my google search.
I have no problem just being able to grab my important data off of it, and starting on a fresh install. I just dont want to lose my huge library of pictures and music.

I followed instructions from Apple and reformated a second boot drive with GUID partitions, loaded my Snow Leopard OS and updated to the last version. Downloaded Lion and installed, set this second HDD as the new boot drive and waited - one monitor came up but then nothing happened for so long I went away. This has happened three times now and while I'm not watching my MacPro Xenon 8 core reboots from the Snow Leopard drive..

My iMac hard drive died and I got a new one installed from Apple and my dad's friend installed Leopard for me and he started to download and install the updates from Apple and I don't know if he stopped the install midway but when I tried to download and install them NONE of them install. I called Apple and they told me to try something in Disk Utility with "verify disk" and it didn't work still and then they sent me something about trying to Archive and Installing but it seems really complicated. Is there anything else I can try?

I ran software update and when the updates were finished downloading it told me to restart the computer. So I clicked restart. When I got to the blue screen with the turning gear it stayed on that screen for a while. Not just a minute or 2, I think at least 10 but possibly even more because I left the room for a while since it seemed to be doing nothing.
I came back in the room after a while and the computer was on the desktop. Should I be worried that it took so long to go from the blue screen with the turning gear to get to the desktop? Do you think my updates installed correctly, and would there be any way of knowing if they didn't?

A security update (from like March or something) and Safari 5 just simply won't install. They are both downloaded, but when I click install it either shows a spinning loading thing for a few seconds, or the install thing for a few seconds, but then it just restarts.

I've noticed that all of a sudden my MacBook Pro stopped installing updates. Lately, the only one that was installed up to the end was an HP printer update. Updates from Apple or from Microsoft Office will not get to the end of the process. It doesn't matter if I try via Software Update or directly from the Apple site. What happens it that the process goes up to the point I click "install" (after choosing the volume - which is the main HD), then nothing happens - no dialog box, nothing. I can click "install" a hundred times (the button remains available). Then I have to quit the installation process.

I have a late 2008 alumunium Macbook 2.4GHz, upgraded to 4GB RAM, running Snow Leopard 10.6.2. Due to a kernel panic earlier today I went through the websites shown in this thread: [URL]. As I was doing some of the procedures, I came across a website about EFI and SMC firmware updates for Intel-based Macs shown below: [URL].
According to that website the Boot ROM Version on my late 2008 Aluminium Macbook, should be
MB52.008E.B05.
Instead it is
MB51.007D.B03
If I understand correctly, the support website probably has a typo, because my Macbook is coded Macbook 5,1 and not 5,2. Also on this website: [URL] it says MacBook5,1 will update to MB51.007D.003, which is still not the number I have in the System Profiler. Of course the above website has Mac OS X 10.5.7 as a requirement, so I'm not sure if the number changes in Snow Leopard. I just want to know if the Boot ROM Version in my System Profiler is ok, or if something is wrong.

I had Apple Soundtrack 1.0 installed and then I removed it. Now its been about a week and software update has been coming up and trying to have me update the files, even though I removed the application already. How can I remove whatever is left that makes SU think it is still there? I'm using Snow Leopard, with all updates. The two updates in question are Pro Applications Update 2005-01 and 2006-02.
It claims it is for users of Final Cut Studio 5.1, Final Cut Pro 5.1, Motion 2.1, Soundtrack Pro 1.1, DVD Studio Pro 4.1, Shake 4.1, Live Type 2.1, Compressor 2.1, Apple QMaster 2.1, Final Cut Express HD 3.5. I don't have any of these installed and I'm assuming something was left behind, making it think it is still here. I could leave it since the files are so tiny, but it's just annoying that it keeps popping up every 8 hours or so.

I just installed Windows 7 Home Premium and the Boot Camp 3.1 Update on my MacBook Pro.
What other updates do I need to install? Are there things that I need to do/uninstall?
The battery seems to be draining a lot quicker than when I'm on OSX, is there anyway to fix this?
There's also some weird noise coming from my MacBook Pro when I'm on Windows. I can't really explain it but it's like some kind of a scratchy noise. I ejected all my disks, so I don't think it's coming from the super drive.
The scrolling of the trackpad seems go really fast and just a little stroke makes the page scroll all the way to the bottom. Is there anyway I can fix this?

I keep getting a message saying "Software Update can't connect to the update server. Make sure you're connected to the Internet, and then try again." I'm connected to the Internet, so that's not the issue. I've tried rebooting, and using Disk Utility to repair permissions.  I've also tried waiting and trying again later. This is the third day in a row I've gotten this message. Â

Software update 4.0.6 has found Safari 5.1.7, iTunes 10.6.1, Java for Mac OX X 10.6 Update 8, iLife Support 9.0.4, and Remote Desktop Client update 3.5.3.
Have tried to download & install as a group and individually. Have downloaded Safari and Java to the hard drive and tried to install them. Also I've purchased Lion and tried twice to download and install but it reports an error at 4.1 GB and aborts, driving my downloads into pay-per-extra MB on my cable service.Â
Have also tried safe boot and disconnected (home) network.Â
