MacBook Air :: It Cannot Boot After Recent Updates
Jun 25, 2012
I was prompted to install updates, it was the Thunderbolt Update and Application Loader. Both must be somewhat recent as I applied some updates a week ago. When the system rebooted it stuck on the gray screen. The apple logo never even comes on the screen. I have tried Safe Mode etc. but it never even makes it to the Apple logo. System has been running fine and normally boots in just a few seconds.

Clicked restart and was presented with a screen that said "none of the software updates could be installed, an unexpected error occurred" I clicked OK, was left with blank screen that did nothing. So I powered down, and restarted, now I'm presented with a Unix screen indicating "unable to find driver for this platform" and a window instructing me to restart.
Restarting in any mode, shift, command, command s, etc will not move me past the Mac OS version not yet set screen. This is a mess. I installed Lion over the Internet and do not have a startup disk I can use to recover and reinstall to even restore from my Time Capsule ... Isn't there a way I can install over the Internet?

I have my work portfolio on iWeb, and a few other sites and am about to start another site, and wanted to check something: I read somewhere about there not being recent updates for iWeb, and wanted to make sure that nothing drastic is changing, basically that iWeb is still going strong and will be around for a good long time. .

Suddenly I have lost all the notes I have added / changed in the last three weeks or so! This is borderline catastrophic for me, lots of important stuff.Â
Very weird; I did not lose any other info (calendars or addresses, etc.), only Notes. And it happened across all devices / places (iPhone, iMac, iCloud).Â
The only recent event that can possibly have something to do with this (I don't know how) is that I purchased a new Macbook Air and did a Migration Assistant. Again, the odd thing is that Notes was the only thing affected. how I can retrieve them?? (I have synced since losing them. Mail & Notes are being pushed through iCloud.)Â

Im having my first ever problem with a Mac, bummer! I have tried Googling an answer, but didn't find anything specific enough for my situation.Last night I installed the SL Graphics Update, hoping to be able to run Starcraft 2 on a higher setting.
Anyways, I installed it, and now the computer wont boot. It is stuck on the gray screen with the spinning symbol. It appears to be installing the software update, since it shows a gray progress bar, but then once that finishes, it just stays on the gray screen with the spinning symbol and goes nowhere after that.
I have a Macbook Pro available to use, if I need to target the disk. Not sure how to do that though, just found that idea in my google search.
I have no problem just being able to grab my important data off of it, and starting on a fresh install. I just dont want to lose my huge library of pictures and music.

I have a late 2008 alumunium Macbook 2.4GHz, upgraded to 4GB RAM, running Snow Leopard 10.6.2. Due to a kernel panic earlier today I went through the websites shown in this thread: [URL]. As I was doing some of the procedures, I came across a website about EFI and SMC firmware updates for Intel-based Macs shown below: [URL].
According to that website the Boot ROM Version on my late 2008 Aluminium Macbook, should be
MB52.008E.B05.
Instead it is
MB51.007D.B03
If I understand correctly, the support website probably has a typo, because my Macbook is coded Macbook 5,1 and not 5,2. Also on this website: [URL] it says MacBook5,1 will update to MB51.007D.003, which is still not the number I have in the System Profiler. Of course the above website has Mac OS X 10.5.7 as a requirement, so I'm not sure if the number changes in Snow Leopard. I just want to know if the Boot ROM Version in my System Profiler is ok, or if something is wrong.

Minutes after receiving the Apple Security Update in my email, I quickly ran the system wide Apple Software Update (OS X Lion 10.7.4, Macbook Pro8,2). With the iTunes update came two other updates. The first update was for iPhoto '11. The second update was for the Thunderbolt to support Gigabit Ethernet. To the best of my knowledge, all went well with downloading. It was a hefty update, the iPhoto '11 update alone being 599.65 MB. After installation, a dialog appeared allowing the user to "Restart now" or later. A firm believer in immediately restarting the computer when it tells me to, I did so. Once the desktop faded, my mac began installing my updates as the updates could not have been installed while core system services were running. In about 10 minutes, the progress bar had reached the end, but a peculiar dialog appeared. It said that the updates that I wanted installed, were not installed. I pressed the only button on the dialog which removed the dialog box and left me with the empty wallpaper of the same texture as the iOS 5 Notification Center, the same wallpaper used during Mac Recovery during bootup. After another 10 minutes, nothing had changed; I was still staring at this lovely wallpaper. Knowing things had gone sour, I held down the power button for a few seconds until it turned off. After turning the computer back on, and booting into Mac OS X, I was, and still am, faced with a few lines of text.Â
Now I am unable to boot into Mac OS X.There is no recovery partition (as I'm triple booting, which apparently mac doesn't like), but I have booted into a Recovery-ish mode using the Lion Internet Recovery. I have verified the disk: no problems found, a good solid green line saying everything's ok. I went ahead and clicked on repair, to which it did not report fixing anything. I am currently booted into my Windows 7 (also noted my Windows is running incredibly slow, possibly just a placebo effect of me losing my Mac OS X) in which I am typing this. I have my Mac OS X backed up via Time Machine from earlier this morning but I would still like to not have to wipe hard-drive, install Snow Leopard upgrade to Lion, install Windows 7, install linux, and then restore respective operating system's data. Â Is there ANY possible way I can make my Mac OS X bootable again? Or even re-installing Snow Leopard/Lion without touching the partitions behind it?Â

I logged onto my iMac today and checked for any updates. I found updates for iPhoto, Thunderbolt, Airport and I think Safari. After it downloaded the updates and installed them, it wanted to reboot. Upon clicking ok, it went to a grey screen while initializing the updates, or something to that effect. Then it said an unknown error occurred and press ok to reboot. I presses ok but nothing happened, the box disappeared and the blank grey screen remained.
So I rebooted and the logon screen came up. I put my password in, which was accepted and the iMac moved on to blank grey screen with the darker grey Apple symbol in the middle and the the 'thinking' wheel doing its little circling thing just below that. It's sits there like that and doesn't move to the desktop screen. I've tried rebooting but it stalls at the same point. It's running the latest version of X. It didn't come with any disks and I don't have Time Machine.

So a while back I had final cut pro installed, and eventually deleted cause I no longer needed it. I used AppCleaner when removing to try and make sure I got it all.
Well every time I do a software update it wants to install "Pro Applications Update" and "Prokit Updates" Which are updates for final cut pro and its related apps.
Any idea how I can stop it from wanting me to install these updates for something I no longer have?

I did the latest firmware update few days ago and went through that series of boots. It's a shame on me that I didn't jog down the ROM revision info before the update. According to the this link:
[URL]
The FM Rev should be MBA31.0061.B01 after the update.
My MBA 13 is still read MBA31.0061.B00 after I thought I did the update. Does that mean the update didn't go through?

My wife has a Macbook (2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo - Mid 2007) that has become painfully slow. We brought it into the Apple store just before her Apple Care expired and they replaced her hard drive, as they said there were some issues with it. I maxed out her RAM last night to 2GB (and yes, the machine is recognizing the RAM just fine). I also upgraded to Snow Leopard this morning. Other than that, there hasn't been any work done to the computer. She uses it for very low intensity things and doesn't do much more than surf the internet and load photos into iPhoto. That said, the HD only has about 5GB of free space. Now I know it is nearly impossible to diagnose any problems with the machine through a message board like this, but I am wondering if anyone can offer any insight into the most common reasons a not-too-old computer with a new HD, 2GB of RAM, and the most recent OS would be incredibly slow.
I keep her Activity Monitor open in the dock so she can see how much of her memory is being used, and it's kind of interesting to see. Upon start up (with the new memory installed) about 3/4 of it is free. After opening just about any program it shoots down to about half free, and similarly, upon opening another program (it doesn't seem to matter which one) she has about 1/4 of her memory free. Of course, closing down the programs free up some of the memory, but it doesn't seem to get back to that 3/4 that were there upon start up. I usually have a decent grasp on what is going on with a computer, but when it comes to something like this I don't really know where to turn (especially without Apple Care to eat the cost of a fix). So, anyone have any thoughts on what I should do to get the machine running at a relatively quick pace again?

I sent my Macbook to the Genius repair, I could take snapshots and they would find their own space on the desktop. Now they go over the Macintosh HD icon. Same with whenever I insert a dvd, it goes over the HD icon. It's annoying because they all pile up on top of the HD icon.

I have Love Film on the mac air and it has worked a dream until last Saturday. While I access the site easily and select something to stream it is coming up with a DRM error. I have checked everything in Silverlight and un-installed and re-insalled and check all the required boxes but nothing!
The only other chnage I made to the laptop was downloadng Mackeeper that same and perhaps it is a coincidence that I can no longer receive streaming since that time.

I have looked over the postings closely but may have missed something. What is the current knowledge, now, in early September about Apple-installed SSDs and performance degradation over time? Early concern beginning with the release of MBP 2010 in April was the the lack of TRIM support in OSX. Has anyone at this point noticed or measured significant degradation of factory-installed SSDs? I am ready to purchase a MBP 2010 and I am considering a 256 GB SSD.

I've had my macbook since April, and I love it. I have had very minimal problems and it's done me well. But, today while watching a flash video(Megavideo) on safari, it crashed. I got the beachball and had to force quit. I thought, oh no big deal but then i went back and reopened safari and it happened again, then again when i went to search for something. I initially thought it had to do with Flash Player, but then it happened with no video involved.

I did this update a few days ago on my own MBP and there was no grey screen issue. Is it safe to restart the mac, or does this update just take a while on some computers?Â

Formatted my MacBook Pro and clean installed Snow Leopard after I lost connectivity to any external monitor I plug in to my MBP. I noticed that as soon as I restarted with the Snow Leopard DVD, I regained the connection with my external monitor.
After format all was well until I updated all to the way it was. No problems showed until I loaded the recent update of Snow Leopard.Does anyone suffer from this? Does anyone know a solution?

I recently attempted to install the most recent firmware and security updates for mac os x 10.5.8 on my macbook pro 17 inch (purchased about 14 months ago). Computer asked me to reboot, i did, it then gave me instructions for firmware updates.
The screen went dark, and it did its thing, and I returned 10 minutes later. The computer had not rebooted.I pressed the startup key and it gave a long beep. Screen remained dark. Some minutes later it ran the boot cycle, but booted into windows (i have dual boot set up). I can only get into windows now.
