View 1 RepliesI used to use Sync Toy on my windows PC to synchronize my selected hard disk directories to a USB flash drive. It meant that I could change, delete files on either and when I ran Sync Toy it would update both ways - was truly great. Is there something similar (or better) for my MacBook Pro running OS 10.7?

After Lion's release last summer, I downloaded it and made a bootable Lion flash drive, which works great. Now, I want to burn Lion from the flash drive to a DVD. On the flash drive, when I open Contents of "Install Mac OS X Lion.app," I do not see a Shared Support folder. Can I make a bootable DVD from my bootable Lion USB flash drive?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am trying to write /Users/xxx to a Lexar 8g flash drive. Its size is under 1g. I can easily put subfolders onto the drive, but if I try to feed it the entire home folder it tosses it out again. I don't know how to use Finder to reach the /Users folder, where xxx is just a subfolder, but I can do this from the terminal command line; however, then I got stuck on how to proceed: I tried to mount /dev/disk1 [which diskutil shows as its name]; each variation I'v tried runs into some problem: disk busy, not found, etc. I was using sudo commands, so I don't think it's a permissions problem.

I have a bunch of flash drives I need to format for work, and we want to put our company logo as the icon for each drive. We wanted to format them as MS-Dos Fat so that they'll be readable and writeable on both Mac and Windows computers. But when I format them that way and change the icon, it displays as a generic preview JPEG image instead of the real image or even the default hard drive icon.
I managed to fix it so the icon will display properly in Snow Leopard, but in Lion the drive still mounts with the generic Preview thumbnail.
Is there any way I can easily format a flash drive so that a) it will be readable and writeable on Windows and OSX machines and b) have the icon for the drive appear correctly on Lion, Snow Leopard, and windows machines?

I created a bootable usb drive on a windows pc using windows 7 to install windows 8 preview and want to make a copy to install in virtualbox on my imac and burn to a dvd that will work on pc.
I've tried using disk utility to create an image and get a file ESD-USB.dmg, but virtualbox won't boot a dmg file.
I tried converting it in the terminal with:
hdiutil convert -format UDRO -o windows8.iso ESD-USB.dmg
but the resulting file was windows8.iso.dmg. I changed the name to windows8.iso, but even so, virtualbox complains it's unbootable.
I tried the terminal command:
dd if=/dev/disk4 of=windows8.iso
but virtualbox complained that it's not bootable.
I tried the terminal command:
cat /dev/disk4 > windows8.iso
but virtualbox complained that it's not bootable.

When I travel I would generally take a small travel drive that is clone of my white MacBook as a rescue drive. Now that I have the MBA I am wondering if I could just clone my 11.6 MBA to a 64 GB flash drive and then if the worst happened I could reverse clone from the flash drive to the MBA.

All of the sudden my Mac Pro wont read blank CD-R's and blank DVD-R's. It will read burned disc and software just fine. I was burning with these same disc fine a few days ago.
I get this "This disc cannot be used because it is not recognized."
I tried rebooting with no luck! The only thing that I've done to my Mac lately is add a 1 TB External HD (Western Digital) to my mac through the 800 plug.
My boss is coming over soon to pick up some disc.
I recently picked up an iMac G3 with a 600 MHz G3 Processor and a slot-loading CD-RW drive. It had 10.2.8 and 9.2.2 installed. I went into the startup disk menu in system preferences and tried to restart in 9.2.2 and be adventerous. But it would just flash a floppy disk with a ? mark. No matter what I did I could not get back to Mac OS X. I also have a MacBook with Tiger restore CDs. I tried to install that on there but could not and decided to see if it would work if I erased the drive. It did not. So now I have an iMac G3 with a blank hard drive and a Cd drive and a mind that is completely clueless about what to do!

Okay so, I have an External drive that sat in a USB enclosure until the USB connection snapped off on the inside. I figured I'd remove the (SATA) drive and re-purpose it as an internal drive. When I did this, it shows up as unreadable. The drive itself shows up in disk utility apps, but the two partitions (one was a Time Machine backup, the other a regular Mac-formatted (Extended) partition, do not. I get the ol' "This drive cannot be read. Initialize?" message when the machine boots up. how I can get back to the data I know is on there? Am I gonna have to do a RESTORE to another drive?

When installing operating system from original osx two-disc set, the box which asks to choose which destination to install to is blank, and does not show any icon onto which to choose. Is this is defect in the disc? The computer recognizes that there is a new harddrive, so I know I installed it properly.

"In addition, it is possible to completely erase a hard drive and install Snow Leopard without a pre-existing operating system in place, enabling users to bypass the possible headaches of an upgrade and go with a clean install instead."
I'm a newbie here but wonder if the above AppleInsider statement is true. I installed Snow Leopard over my existing Leopard w/out a hitch. Earlier OS X retail DVD versions clearly distinguished between "Install" and "Upgrade" - correct?. I'm confused where I read Snow Leopard required an existing OS (Leopard or Tiger) to install. It appears Snow Leopard is a "full install" DVD?
I have a question about upgrading the harddisk on my unibody macbook (last year's model). I have done a time machine backup and the macbook is running snow leopard. However, I currently don't have the snow leopard DVD with me, only the leopard DVD that came with the macbook. Can I still do the hard disk upgrade? In other words, can I boot with the leopard DVD, and restore back to snow leopard via time machine or do I need the snow leopard dvd?
View 12 Replies View RelatedSo I replaced my hard drive with a brand new bigger one, booted to the DVD of Snow Leopard with my Time Machine disk plugged in as well, and did the partition and then restore steps. No, I didn't have to install MacOS X first and then migrate. I restored right from backup. Mostly worked awesomely.
Couple oddities that maybe folks here have answers for:That first step (setting that 1 partition), which I think handled the formatting as well was SUPER fast. I expected it would have to take hours for a 320gig drive. Took minutes. Do drives no longer require low-level surface formatting? My desktop background was lost. No biggie - I re-found the picture and set it.I now have a "Private" folder visible in finder that didn't used to be there. It has underneath it the following folders: etc, tftpboot, tmp, var. What's this?
Is it possible to partition a blank DVD in the Superdrive?

OS X thinks my disc (containing several files) is blank when it isn't. The disc was originally burned on a Windows machine however I used it on my MBP last night and it worked fine. However today I'm trying it on my iMac but with no luck. From searching the internet this seems to be a very common problem with no solution. Has anyone else found a way around it?
