MacBook :: DVD Drive Says Disk Is Blank?
Dec 6, 2014
In the middle of watching an educational DVD, I got an error message. After ejecting and trying again, I got a message that the disk was blank. I tried other disks with same result. Is the drive shot? Do I need to just get an external DVD drive?

I am going to install a new SSD drive on my MBP mid-2009. After it is installed, can I then start up computer and then insert the DVD Install operating system disk, or do I install the DVD install disk, then shut down computer and swap the HD drive? I know that I will reformat the disk when Installer begins, but I want to know if the computer will recognize the install disk with a new blank HD in place.

"In addition, it is possible to completely erase a hard drive and install Snow Leopard without a pre-existing operating system in place, enabling users to bypass the possible headaches of an upgrade and go with a clean install instead."
I'm a newbie here but wonder if the above AppleInsider statement is true. I installed Snow Leopard over my existing Leopard w/out a hitch. Earlier OS X retail DVD versions clearly distinguished between "Install" and "Upgrade" - correct?. I'm confused where I read Snow Leopard required an existing OS (Leopard or Tiger) to install. It appears Snow Leopard is a "full install" DVD?

I have a Seagate 1 TB Backup Plus Drive which was working perfectly fine until I plugged it into a USB hub. It detected it while in the hub and I was able to get files off of it, but when I ejected it from the hub and put it back into the USB slot on the computer it was not detected by finder. It shows up in the disk utility and I clicked verify and repair and it says:
Verify and Repair volume “Seagate Backup Plus Drive”
Checking file system
Volume repair complete.
Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.
Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files.
Is there any way to get this to work properly again? Or if not is there a way for me to recover my files on the external hard drive?
I have a Macbook PRO late 2011 running OS X Mavericks.

I have an old Macbook via 2007 and I'm trying to update my operating system (currently OS 10.5.8) to Snow Leopard, but the disk is not reading in the disk drive. And unfortunately, Snow Leopard is only on a DVD, it can't be downloaded.I figure I have 2 choices:
1) take it in and spend $49 to have them do diagnostics and then tell me they probably need to replace the superdrive
2) I could buy an external optical drive. But I would need to know which one would be compatable with my old *** Macbook.

I created some blank disk images to store sensitive data in; with some I created my own password and with others I had the system do it. I also made the mistake of instructing the system to remember the passwords. Remembering the passwords kind of defeats the purpose as it automatically opens the folders. I want to be prompted for a password and never have been. I want to delete the blank disk image folders, but have not found a way of doing this and then I will create them again and instruct it not to remember the passwords. How to delete or change the password settings?

So around 5 years ago i got the WD-160JB hard disk drive. I want to see all the things i did back then. I want to be able to connect this WD-160JB drive as a external hard drive to my mac.
What i am wondering is if you can somehow have a cable or something which links the USB from the MBP to the hard disk.

I have a MacBook and lately, every time I insert a blank disc, it spits the disc out. I can hear the drive working for a couple of seconds then the disc comes out. The same thing happens when I insert burned disc. I didn't encounter any problem whenever I insert original discs (audio or films). I need to burn a lot of files.
x's:
I've been using the same blanc discs but the problem only came 2 weeks back. Before I can use -/+ r/rw disc with no problems at all. I doubt that it has to do with the discs type

All of the sudden my Mac Pro wont read blank CD-R's and blank DVD-R's. It will read burned disc and software just fine. I was burning with these same disc fine a few days ago.
I get this "This disc cannot be used because it is not recognized."
I tried rebooting with no luck! The only thing that I've done to my Mac lately is add a 1 TB External HD (Western Digital) to my mac through the 800 plug.
My boss is coming over soon to pick up some disc.

I recently picked up an iMac G3 with a 600 MHz G3 Processor and a slot-loading CD-RW drive. It had 10.2.8 and 9.2.2 installed. I went into the startup disk menu in system preferences and tried to restart in 9.2.2 and be adventerous. But it would just flash a floppy disk with a ? mark. No matter what I did I could not get back to Mac OS X. I also have a MacBook with Tiger restore CDs. I tried to install that on there but could not and decided to see if it would work if I erased the drive. It did not. So now I have an iMac G3 with a blank hard drive and a Cd drive and a mind that is completely clueless about what to do!

My drive is not recognising any blank cd/dvd when i put in computer.
Even a real cd or dvd is not getting any response either!
It has only started happening today! It's like the computer doesn't recognize it.
The computer just spits it out after a couple of seconds.
I've restarted and shut down but nothing seems to work.

Okay so, I have an External drive that sat in a USB enclosure until the USB connection snapped off on the inside. I figured I'd remove the (SATA) drive and re-purpose it as an internal drive. When I did this, it shows up as unreadable. The drive itself shows up in disk utility apps, but the two partitions (one was a Time Machine backup, the other a regular Mac-formatted (Extended) partition, do not. I get the ol' "This drive cannot be read. Initialize?" message when the machine boots up. how I can get back to the data I know is on there? Am I gonna have to do a RESTORE to another drive?

I have an aluminum Macbook from late 2008, model A1278. I just had to replace the hard drive, and need to install an OS on the currently blank HDD. Problem is, my CD drive doesn't work, so I can't just install from a disc. I had installed Mountain Lion on my old hard drive, but the original OS was Snow Leopard. I haven't succeeded in getting any of my information off my old HDD. Is there another way to install either Snow Leopard or Lion onto my new hard drive?

My bootable drive is a JBOD (concatenated array) of two internal disks. Therefore I cannot use Bootcamp. I have placed a third blank drive in the third hard drive bay. I have my download of the Windows 7 beta, which I burned to a bootable disk using Disk Utility (.cdr file). Now, might any of you in the audience be able to inform me of what I should do to get the Windows OS from the bootable disk onto the completely blank internal drive?

Installed a new harddrive into my 2005 mac mini to replace 40 gb harddrive with hitachi 80 gb harddrive. When installing operating system from original osx two-disc set, the box which asks to choose which destination to install to is blank, and does not show any icon onto which to choose. Is this is defect in the disc? The computer recognizes that there is a new harddrive, so I know I installed it properly.

I am considering purchasing diskwarrior but want to make sure it can help my situation before I purchase it. My imac will not boot from the internal hard drive (Intel processor) When I use disk utility to try and repair the disk, I get error messages and it won't repair. I can see the HD but cannot repair it. When I connect using target mode with my mac book pro, the hard drive does not appear on my host (macbook pro) computer. I have reloaded OS X (Leopard) onto a firewire external drive and can boot my imac that way but I can not find my original internal Macintosh HD. Will disk warrior be able to help with this scenario. I would really like to access that internal Macintosh HD and retrieve my files.

I have a 2TB Western Digital My Book Studio FW800 external that has 5 partitions, connected to my 2011 iMac. I had help doing the partitions and don't really remember the reasoning, but one is just for my SuperDuper! backup, one is Miscellaneous, one for movie clips off my camcorder, one for misc scanned photo's and one for my genealogy research. I back up using Time Machine to a Time Capsule and also to this WD hard drive with SuperDuper!
Recently I'm getting a pop up message that "Mac OS X can't repair the disk "Genealogy"'. And it needs to be reformatted. It's become a read only disk. When I look in Disk Utility it shows all the partitions as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" EXCEPT for the one in question. I also noticed that there are a lot of files with "date created" being the same date in 1969! These files may be letters I've written or photo's I added to that partition within the last few years.
I think I have to completely reformat the entire external hard drive to repair this, but I want to make sure. Because it's going to be a major hassle backing it all up to another external (having to get one first) and then figuring out how to make the files that have turned "read only" in that one partition, back to their original state! Does this sound right, that I have to reformat the entire external hard drive? And how do I get the read-only files back to their original state.

I have a question about upgrading the harddisk on my unibody macbook (last year's model). I have done a time machine backup and the macbook is running snow leopard. However, I currently don't have the snow leopard DVD with me, only the leopard DVD that came with the macbook. Can I still do the hard disk upgrade? In other words, can I boot with the leopard DVD, and restore back to snow leopard via time machine or do I need the snow leopard dvd?
