OS X V10.7 Lion :: Installing It Doesn't Go Beyond 'Checking "Macintosh HD"'

Feb 4, 2012

I downloaded Lion from the App store and the installer launched automatically. I clicked install, then I agreed to the terms and then a progress window appeared with the label 'Checking "Macintosh HD" '. I have waited for hours and nothing happens after that. I already tried burning the installer to an extenal drive and a DVD and got the same results.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Time Machine Restored 'Macintosh HD' Inside 'Macintosh HD'

Jul 3, 2012

After reinstall of OS X 10.7.4, I restored an older copy from Time Machine backup. I want to completely replace the current "Macintosh HD" folder with the folder that TM put inside it. I created a separate user account, that did not exist before to do it. Do I need to create a root account? Is there an easy way to copy /Macintosh HD/Macintosh HD/to/Macintosh HD/?

So far I've had a house, and a filing cabient.

This isn't a serious problem, I'm just wondering whether it's just my computer, or a bug in Lion.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Cannot Unmount Macintosh HDD To Install It

Jun 12, 2012

I have a 15" MacBook Pro on my hands with some sort of HDD issue. The machine suddenly stopped booting and so my first thought was that the HDD has failed or that the filesystem had become corrupt. My files were all backed up, so I went ahead with a reformat and reinstallation of Lion.  At firat Verify Disk, run from the Lion boot disk, reported numerous errors that Repair Disk couldn't fix. Fair enough. I swapped the old drive out for a new one that I knew to be good. (And, in the meantime, reformatted the old drive while attached externally to another machine without issues -- so maybe there's nothing wrong with this drive after all?) But no dice this way either: Lion reinstallation fails with an uninormative error message ("An error occurred while preparing the installation."). And if I attempt to alter the partition structure of either drive (either the known-good drive, or the original drive) or to erase the drive, I am told that the partition could not be unmounted. I find this odd, since I have booted off the Lion install DVD, not the HDD in question.

So, I'm left to conclude that something is faulty. I think I can rule out the drive itself -- I have two drives that exhibit the same symptoms, both of which behave fine in another MacBook Pro. I also think I can rule out the SATA controller/logic board since there are no evident IO problems with the DVD drive and, other than the HDD issues, I can run the Lion installer (as well as an Uuntu LiveCD) without difficulty. So what's left? Could it be the SATA cable?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Removed Wheel Group From Macintosh HD?

Jun 12, 2012

I have been setting up a large sharing network with my housemates and have been messing around with sharing permissions quite a bit. I saw a group named wheel and foolishly removed it from somewhere... I think it was the Macintosh HD... the Macbook stopped!Upon researching, I now know what the wheel group is, and that I should have left it the **** alone. At the time though, I thought it was someone in the house with access to my whole drive.I have tried repairing permissions in disc utility, but still get spinning wheel (ironic) upon restart.

DO I need to re-install OSX?

The macbook pro came with snow-leopard and I upgraded to lion, if I re-install from 10.6 disk will I have issues?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Time Machine Reverts To Macintosh HD After External Drive Is Ejected

May 17, 2012

I've seeing a problem with Time Machine with one of my external drives.  Here's my setup:MBP 15"OSX 10.7.4Work external drive - Seagate GoFlex, via USBHome external drive - Western Digital Green, via USB

I had been using both home and work drives as Time Machine backups, and things were working fine.  I would have to re-designate the appropriate Time Machine backup drive when I changed locations, but everything was working.

The problem:When I attach the work drive and point Time Machine to the drive, it works.  When I eject the work drive, the Time Machine prefs panel shows "Time Machine - work" in greyed out text as the target drive, reflecting that the drive is not available. When I attach the home drive and point Time Machine to the drive, it works.  But when I eject the home drive, the Time Machine prefs panel shows "Macintosh HD" in normal text as the target drive.  Worse, I think it actually attempts to back up to the internal drive, because at the next Time Machine backup interval, I get a "The identity of the backup disk has changed" error from Time Machine.

I've tried a full reset of Time Machine by deleting the prefs file.  I've also tried verifying the home external disk.

PowerPC :: Installing Cheetah On IBook G4 - Doesn't Boot

May 29, 2009

i didnt have much to do a couple days ago so i thought i'd install Cheetah on my iBook G4, turned out to be harder than i thought. For some reason it doesnt boot any os prior to Tiger, so I installed Tiger and copied an image of the Tiger OS with the OS 9.2 (i think you have to have it on the system to install prior OS's). So i did that and when i pop the Cheetah cd in it loads and opens OS 9.2 but then it says: "This Application Does Not Run In The Classic Environment - To Install Mac OS X, start up your computer from the Mac OS X CD." Which i did but still doesnt load. I still have an old PowerBook G3 and installed Cheetah on it, then i removed its hd, and created a new sparse image from it. Then i booted up Tiger on the ibook g4 and restored from the image, all went fine, i selected the correct boot device and even repaired permissions but still it doesnt want to boot up Cheetah on the iBook!

OS X V10.7 Lion :: MBP Doesn't Boot Into Safe Mode And Doesn't Wake Up "normally"

Feb 22, 2012

I am using a 15" MacBook Pro Santa Rosa (mid 2007), 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 6 GB memory, with a 240GB OWC Mercury Extreme Pro SSD (15 months old). Lion 10.7.3. Computer doesn't boot into Safe Mode AND also if it "goes to sleep by itself" (I don't touch it for a while, then it falls asleep) after some time when I try to wake it up I get the Spinning Ball of Death or a black screen and the only thing I can do is press the power button for some seconds to power off. It wakes up OK if I, either close the lid or Apple icon-> Sleep.

WHEN TRY TO BOOT INTO SAFE MODE: Immediately after the startup chime I press the Shift key, after 2-3 seconds get the login window, key in my password. Instead of logging in, it goes to a screen with the Apple icon, underneath it, the Apple spinning gear and underneath that a loading bar.  After quite some time the loading bar disappears, the gear goes on spinning for a LONG time, then black screen, startup chime again and login window. Then, when I key in my password, it just logs in as usual, no safe mode.

I tried to write in Terminal “sudo nvram boot-args="-x"”, BIG mistake! It got my computer into a  loop of those screens. I don’t exactly remember what eventually got me out of this loop (I think I booted from a clone, then started with the Lion CD and wrote back “sudo nvram boot-args=""” in Terminal.  Also set up an additional administrator account but all was the same. Tried verify/repair disk, everything OK. Eventually I erased completely the HD (not Recovery HD) reinstalled Tiger, Snow Leopard and Lion again, downloaded all applications/software/programs I had, from scratch and only copied the data from a backup, being sure that after that all problems will be over, but... everything like it was, no "normal sleeping" and no SM booting.

OS X :: Checking My Bandwidth OS X?

Sep 6, 2010

This doesn't have to do with OS X as much as it does my ISP (Comcast 15Mbps/3Mbps Down/Up). Comcast states you get speeds "Up to" those advertised which basically means you will never get those speeds but once in a blue moon it could happen.

I've been watching my Router activity for a few minutes (see Top graph of the attached image) and I never get near either of those advertised speeds as expected. I am downloading Xcode DMG from Apple and a few torrents are running with no bandwidth restrictions.

My question is currently I'm getting about 50% of my advertised bandwidth, if I reduced down to the 1.5 Mbps Comcast package would I probably still only get 50% of that bandwidth? I think I already know the answer but was curious what you guys thought.

OS X :: Checking Files And Folders?

Jun 19, 2008

So I have this weird occurrence when I open a Finder window and view files on one of my Mac Pro's internal harddrives.

A bunch of the Files and Folders have a Date Created of Dec 31, 1903 8:00PM.

The Date Modified is correct.

It's not every file/folder either. Mostly contained in one directory I have with client files in it.

I have:

- Reset PRAM
- Reset SMC
- Verified Permissions, Disks
- Deleted Finder's plist

So far, still happening.

Anyone have a clue as to what to check next?

I'm trying to figure out when this happened.....only noticed it today.

Could it have anything to do with sharing files from an XP machine.
