I've found plenty of articles on how to get Time Machine to backup TO a network drive, however I have the opposite problem; I have a Windows machine on my network, with some shared folders, and I'd like to back-up their contents using Time Machine on my Mac since it has plenty of space, without having to copy their contents somewhere first if possible.
However, Time Machine only lets you choose what to exclude, it doesn't let you specify special sources to backup. I was thinking a symbolic link from /Volumes, but I've no idea where to point it to. A second relevant question as well would be; how do I get OS X to automatically connect to a Windows share when it's available? The Windows machine isn't always on when I start up my Mac, but I don't want to have to manually connect all the time
I am trying to share two computers together in a private network.
I have an iMac running OS X Lion & a Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard. The iMac's name on the network is: Studio The Macbook Pro's name on the network is: djlaptop I turn on file sharing, assign a name and they connect through wi-fi. In the Macbook Pro's Finder (djlaptop) the devices list shows this:
And on the Imac (Studio) it shows this:
I can't seem to get the 'Macintosh HD' of the Macbook Pro to show up on the Imac's finder (running lion). The 'DJ' is the home folder.
Does anyone have any more knowledge on how to get it to show up? I have checked my Finder Sidebar items and all of them are ticked. I want to mount the whole Macintosh HD and not just the home folder.

ANy suggestions for the best way to share Dcouments (Word, PDF and XL) on a home network with Macs. We have iCloud but do not want to put some of our docs on there for concern over security (any informed pushback on that welcome by the way). We also use an iPad and iPhone so if possible good to be able t acces through those platform while relising that Office docs will need to be converted with limitations.

I have Alltel Mobile Broadband. Up until the other day, it's been working fine. I'd set up a network on my macbook after connecting to the Alltel network, then I'd enable internet sharing. Then my iPod Touch, iPad, etc would all be able to go online.
The past couple days, however, the connection just won't share.Anyone have any idea what could be doing this and how to fix it?
I am at a printing company with 4 Mac workstations (10.5.8) working from a Mac server (10.4.11). The system has worked great for a couple years until the last month or so. Now when working at a workstation and opening more than one folder on the server, both windows revert to the server level. It drives me crazy when I need to copy something from one folder to another. Now I have to have only one window open, copy file to desktop, open new folder, copy or move file to new folder, delete desktop file. Permissions have been repaired on all stations and aliases have been recreated.

I am able to access my Windows 7 machine's shares on my Mac (Lion 10.7.3) through SMB with no problems at all. However, I am unable to access my Mac's shares on my Windows machine.
I have been fighting with this issue for hours and haven't found a solution yet. I've done a bunch of Googling and have found plenty of posts related to my issue, but no solutions. Everyone seems to be at least receiving a login prompt when they try to connect to a Mac OS X Lion Samba share from a Windows 7 machine, but I am not. All I get is "Windows cannot connect to \MAC" after ~15-20 seconds of waiting.
Here's what I've tried:Reconfigured all of my settings on both the Windows and Mac systems, then restarted. Windows: set to 40- and 56-bit encryption for File Sharing, instead of 128-bit.Windows: network discovery and file sharing enabled.Windows: Network Security: LAN Manager Authentication Level to Send NTMLv2 response only” to “Send LM & NTLM – use NTLMv2 session if negotiated as suggested in another post.Windows: verified workgroup as WORKGROUP.Windows: verified Windows Firewall options for File Sharing.Windows: cleared credentials for my Mac's share in the Credential Manager, still no login prompt.Windows: reinserted my Mac's credentials in Credential Manager for the share, same issue. Mac: Enabled File Sharing, enabled SMB, enabled my Mac's account.Mac: verified Firewall settings for File Sharing.Mac: verified workgroup as WORKGROUP in WINS/NETBIOS configuration. For both systems: verified IP configuration as DHCP under the same gateway and subnet mask--they're clearly under the same network.

This is probably very basic but I don't know how to do it.I have an iMac (2007) running Leopard. I have an iBook (2004) running Tiger. They both share my home wireless network.
How can I best share documents between them? Eg how can I browse the hard drive of each machine from the other- ideally without entering passwords etc every time?
Additionally, the iMac is connected to the printer (because it is also a scanner); can the iBook share the printer too?
Currently I have to browse my network computer under "SHARED" and manually drag/drop the shared folder into Finder under "DEVICES".
Is there a way to do this automatically?
I have 3 computers at home: pc, IMac and Macbook air. The IMac has 2 external drives attached: one by FW800, formated as HFS+, and another by usb, formatted as NTFS. This was the usb drive attached to the pc, it contains all my media, and I used it as a server to access multimedia files on wireless lan. I now have it connected to the IMac, as the pc is now seldom used
Problem is, my Macbook air can't see this usb shared drive on IMac and I can't figure out why, either as guest or as registered user with admin permissions. The fw800 external disk is seen.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI need some advice, I have a wireless printer that I would like to share using my home network but Im not sure what would be the best way to do this, since I have never done anything like this before. What I have is a wireless printer(HP), a MacBook (wirelessly connected), a MacMini (wired connected), a PC laptop (wirelessly connected) and a linksys router. Is there a way to share this through my router or do I need to install the printer in one of the machines and then share the print? What would be my best alternative to share this printer?
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy iMac (running Snowleopard) can't acces any share in my network. It consists of a NAS (DS209) and a mediatank (popcorn hour C-200). I have defined shares on the NAS and a share on the mediatank.
In Finder I see both the mediatank and the NAS. Both are connected according to Finder (resp. user=admin and user=nmt). However when I try to access a share on the NAS or the mediatank via Finder, I get an error-message:
"The operation cant be completed because the original item for XXXX cant be found."
Also I can't Time Machine get working using a specific share on the NAS. Time Machine recognizes the share, but when I select the share I get an error message OSerror 13.

I have my desktop mac connected to my macbook pro via ethernet and am sharing the laptop's wi-fi internet successfully with "Internet Sharing", but is there a way for that tethered desktop to access other Bonjour listings (file server) on the main network through the laptop's wi-fi? This looked like the best place to post this. I have two computers in my home, a 20" iMac with Leopard and a Desktop Dell with XP. There is an usb printer connected to the Dell, but its upstairs. The computers are connected through an ethernet cable. I was wondering if there was a way to print archives from the iMac to the usb printer. What i have been doing is either sharing the files and inserting them to a shared folder on windows xp or sending them to myself via email. I find both processes extremely annoying and boring, and would rather instead just directly send a command to the printer.
