MacBook Pro :: Windows 7 Cannot Access Lion SMB Share, No Login Prompt

Apr 15, 2012

I am able to access my Windows 7 machine's shares on my Mac (Lion 10.7.3) through SMB with no problems at all. However, I am unable to access my Mac's shares on my Windows machine.

I have been fighting with this issue for hours and haven't found a solution yet. I've done a bunch of Googling and have found plenty of posts related to my issue, but no solutions. Everyone seems to be at least receiving a login prompt when they try to connect to a Mac OS X Lion Samba share from a Windows 7 machine, but I am not. All I get is "Windows cannot connect to \MAC" after ~15-20 seconds of waiting.

Here's what I've tried:Reconfigured all of my settings on both the Windows and Mac systems, then restarted. Windows: set to 40- and 56-bit encryption for File Sharing, instead of 128-bit.Windows: network discovery and file sharing enabled.Windows: Network Security: LAN Manager Authentication Level to Send NTMLv2 response only” to “Send LM & NTLM – use NTLMv2 session if negotiated as suggested in another post.Windows: verified workgroup as WORKGROUP.Windows: verified Windows Firewall options for File Sharing.Windows: cleared credentials for my Mac's share in the Credential Manager, still no login prompt.Windows: reinserted my Mac's credentials in Credential Manager for the share, same issue. Mac: Enabled File Sharing, enabled SMB, enabled my Mac's account.Mac: verified Firewall settings for File Sharing.Mac: verified workgroup as WORKGROUP in WINS/NETBIOS configuration. For both systems: verified IP configuration as DHCP under the same gateway and subnet mask--they're clearly under the same network.

OS X :: Login Prompt Not Shown When Wake Up From Sleep

Mar 11, 2009

Am I the only person who has issues with this sometimes refusing the show the login prompt when it wakes up, leaving you with a black screen? The system is still responsive, but all you can do is move the mouse, since there is no dialog. Does this ever happen to anyone else? Also is there any way to clear it aside from power-cycling the machine, and doing "killall loginwindow"?

OS X :: Password Hints From Screensaver Login Prompt

Jul 20, 2010

First of all, how do I get my password hint to show up from the screensaver login/password prompt? I have my password and hint set up so that only people close to me will be able to figure it out in case they ever need to use my laptop, however at the moment the hint doesn't even show up. Also, I'm aware that you can change the text to the login page for user accounts, but is there any way to change the text for the screensaver login prompt? If so, where would I find it in "Library"?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Remote Screen Share Login With Own User Account Interrupts Other Users?

Mar 1, 2012

Apple writes in its OS X Lion screen sharing description that: "You can remotely log in to a Mac with any user account on that computer and control it, without interrupting someone else who might be using the computer under a different login."

Unfortunately, this is not true in my case: When other users are using my 2011 iMac for webbrowsing or DVD watching and I log in on my own acount from my macbook pro, video will stop playing, the spinning wheel sometime appears. The system does not really crash, but wil respond very slowly and in fact is not useable until I as remote user stop my activities or log out. This is not how it should be, especially as the iMac's CPU, memory and network load are very low according to activity monitor's information.

OS X V10.5 Leopard :: Blank Screen From Idling And Prompt User To Login When Awaken?

Jul 1, 2012

I want to stop using updated Mac OS X 10.5.8 (I think it happens in 10.7.4 too IIRC)'s Flurry screen saver and just let Mac OS X 10.5.8 blank/sleep its screen to save energy, not make Macs (Mac Mini, MacBook Pro, etc.) hot especially in the heat waves, and use less resources. I noticed making display (not the computer) sleep and then waking does not ask me to log in like a screen saver would do. Is there a way to do this for sleeping displays?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Set Up Keychain Access To Automatically Login To Websites?

Feb 11, 2012

I am trying to get one password for all of my online passwords. Currently I just use the same password for all of my logins, but I was told that was a terrible idea. I would like to get keychain to create randomized passwords for all of my online logins and then I can simply enter the one keychain password everytime that i need login to something online. So I guess my goal would be for Keychain to act as the middleman, does it have that function?

OS X :: Mount SMB Share To Desktop At Login

Nov 20, 2007

I just started drinking the Mac Kool-Aid when I ordered my first Mac - a MBP - last week. I must admit it tastes way better than the Windoze 3 day old cold coffee I'm used to. So far I'm loving it, but I'm running into one issue on my work network. After trying for 3 hours with our Linux guru we could not get Finder to open a connection to our file/web server which is Debian (Linux) through Samba. I tried everything I could think of and there's not much help on Google. Using the command line mount_smbfs I was finally able to mount the samba share on our Debian to a folder in my home directory. Right now this is fine, for the rest of the day I'll be able to work, but I'm just wondering if there is a way I can create a script that runs when I login that does the following:

1) At login check if my Server is available (192.168.1.216) (this in case I'm using my MBP on the road or from home)

2) Run this command if the server exists: mount_smbfs //myusername:mypassword@192.168.1.216/share /pathto/mountfolder/ondesktop

3) The last part is the key (I guess) - I want this share to show up on my Desktop like when I connect a USB drive or how my Macintosh HD does

I'm assuming it's fairlly easy to create a script that runs at login? I've Googled a little with no success but I think the tricky part will making sure the 192.168.1.216 is a valid server -- or maybe there doesn't even need to be a check it just runs the command and if it's not there nothing happens? The other tricky part for me is figuring out where exactly I need to mount the drive to so that it appears on my desktop as a mounted drive instead of in my /Users/username/smbMount folder that I arbitrarily made. The later is what I really need to konw as I'm sure with alot of Googling I can find the best way to create a login script in Leopard, but I have no idea where to mount it to and I'm afraid to just start trying to mount to some device in /dev/ which (I think) could potentially screw things up.

OS X :: SMB And Timemachine - Access Share Again?

Dec 23, 2010

I was following some instructions on trying to get my time machine to backup to a Network Server SHARE on my home network, and I did one change that made time machine show it, and it tried and came back with a error 41 I believe it was. So I did some research on that, and ran some more commands to try and get it to allow the backup. Well after this, I am no longer able to connect to that SMB share anymore or ANY network share. I can't figure out how to fix this as I am not really familiar with MACs as good as some of you. Can anyone tell me how to fix this so I can access that share again?

OS X :: Cannot Get Write Access To Remote AFP Share

Jan 24, 2010

I cannot get write access to a remote AFP share. Here's what I have: Mac Mini which is where the share exists. I have file sharing turned on, the desired directories enabled via "system prefs" and both my local mac mini account and "administrators" group set for read and write access. The "everyone" group has "read only" access which seems to be enabled by default - I did not remove this permission. My local mac mini account also has my MobileMe account listed as the MobileMe user name in the account manager.

My account on my macbook has a different short name. When I connect to the mac mini via Finder (under "shared"), it connects using the mobileme account. I can view the AFP share on the mac mini, but I cannot write to it. I click "disconnect" and reconnect using my mac mini's user account (the admin level account that is set for read and write access in file sharing) and password, but the results are the same (read-only access). When I go back into the top level finder window for the mac mini, it shows it is connected as the mobile me account despite the fact that I purposely disconnected and re-connected using the mac mini account.

More info since original post: The pop-up errors I get when I try to write a file are (in order): "You may need to enter the name and password for an administrator on this computer to change the item named family-2009" (note family -2009 is an iMovie project). I'm not changing family-2009 and there is no remote copy, so I don't understand what it claims needs admin rights to change. If I click "continue" - The item "family-2009" contains one or more items you do not have permission to read. do you want to copy the items you are allowed to read?"

It's my iMovie project that I created from scratch, so I don't know where this bunk about not having read access to some of the items is coming from. If I click "continue" the final error is - The operation cannot be completed becaue an item with the name "family-2009" already exists. There is no such file with that name on the remote AFP share, so I don't know WTF this thing is trying to do. It's complaining about having read access to an existing file when the permissions are set for read and write and the file doesn't exist. Both systems are fully patched Leopard.

Aug 28, 2006

I'm sure this has been posted, but my search pulled up hundreds of threads. After I scanned the first 50, I decided to just post my question.

I have to wait a few days (at most) for my job to register my MAC address so that the new Mac Pro has access to the network/internet via ethernet. It does not have an Airport card or Bluetooth. While I am waiting, is there a way to connect the Mac Pro to my Powerbook (which has Wifi internet access) such that it can piggyback on the internet connection as a temporary solution?

OS X :: Can ACLs On A Directory Prevent Guest Account From Access Via A File Share

Jan 27, 2010

I have given up on getting home sharing to work properly amongst all my various computers at home on 10.5 and thought I would use an old style brute force method of simply setting up a file share to share my iTunes library. I set up file sharing to use the Guest account and it works fine for all of my other content. I have tried to create shares of the following directories and can only connect as a registered user (Guest user cannot even see these shares):

/Users/<name>/Music

/Users/<name>/Music/iTunes

I have gone into the terminal and looked at the ACLs on the Music directory (e.g ls -alte) and I can't see anything that would block access, but I am not an expert with this type of ACL. The ACL on the Music directory is this:

0: group:com.apple.sharepoint.group.2 allow search

1: group:everyone deny delete

I have an ACL called 0: group:everyone deny delete on one of my other shares that works fine so this can't be the culprit (more importantly the ACL looks like it is just preventing users from deleting anything).

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Why Does Screen Saver Prompt For Secure Disk Image Password

Mar 17, 2012

I go into System Preferences->Dektop & Screen Saver.  As the program "loads" availabe image sources and such I get a pop-up requesting a password to my secure disk image. Yes, I have a secure disk image in my home directory. Yes, the secure disk image is currently "locked" (Not mounted in finder).

I click cancel (a few times, probably 2 maybe 3 times) and things continue along fine. I select a photo source that I want for a screen save and exit peferences. I then go an start the screen saver (I'm using Hot-Corners). I get the message "Looking for pictures....." for , well...basically forever...

Sure enough I touch the mouse to leave my screen saver and there is the pop-up again.  Asking for me to unlock my secure disk image.

I thought this might be related to Spotlight.  I tried reading several threads and have gone as far as taking my entire hard-drive/volume and putting it into the "Privacy" tab under spotlight.

how I might get it so the "Desktop & Screen Saver" stop prompting me to unlock my secure disk image?  (WITHOUT having to make sure the disk image is unlocked before I sleep my screen or open the screen saver utlity) As always, I am only speculating that this is Spotlight related so that could be a red-herring....
