OS X V10.7 Lion :: Gathering The Network Statistics?

Mar 13, 2012

My iMac (Lion) is connected to the world using a wireless router (Airport Extreme). Is there a way to accumulate statistics to measure the traffic between my iMac and the router on a monthly basis? It doesn't matter what kind of traffic, just how much data is exchanged.

IMac :: Gathering Specifications For An I7?

Jun 22, 2010

I currently own a black Macbook which I've just sold to my sister for her to use at university and so I need to get it to her by the end of August at the latest. I'm pretty much decided on buying the 27-inch i7 from the refurb store. My uses are mainly for home entertainment (watching movies, surfing the web, using it for the occasional video edit) and I want to be able to use it for games (Steam, Starcraft II, Diablo III, etc.) I know that a.) if I'm using my Mac for games, I should get a PC. And b.) I'm probably going overkill with the i7 based on my needs. I'd like to make my $2200 last me as long as possible. Therein lies my problem, though. I'm already a bit peeved that I basically have to pay a $1000 premium to use OS X, but I hate Windows so much it's worth it to me...at the same time, I don't really want to spend more than $2200 which is why I'm taking the refurb route (which from what I've heard is not a bad way to go if you want to save a bit of money.)

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Network - Can't Login To Network Macs As Registered User

Feb 20, 2012

Have recently done a clean install of Lion onto a Mac Pro that was running Snow Leopard. Upgradede to 10.7.3  The Lion Mac sits on an office network of several macs running Snow Leopard and a Network Shared HDD.  In order to gain quick full access to the other computers we have been using "connect as" then inputting the macs registerred user administrator details, we were able us access to the full Mac and it's currently mounted hard drives. Since installing Lion I can see and fully access the network share which only uses guest access, see the Other macs in finder, add to their drop boxes but not connect as a registerred user to access one of the snow Leopard machines.  I get a pop up. Spinning wheel, and eventually a timeout. Can't even cancel this action as it comes up greyed out. Oddly the other macs can still log into the Lion machine. No joy so far toggling network preferrences and I'm pretty sure it's going to be a setting I have missed, So far have had not joy looking online or playing in seeing why it would now not be able to connect as before.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Can't Print To Network Printer Over VPN

Feb 16, 2012

I have a networked printer in my home network. I also have a (working) PPTP VPN set up to connect to that home network while on the road. When I open the VPN tunnel, I can adress all devices on the network, including the printer. I can ping it as well as open its Web front end (via Safari). The only thing that doesn't work is: I can't print over the tunnel! I've tried turning on "send all traffic over VPN", but that didn't help. Some research on the web seems to indicate that the solution lies in an option "Exclude Local LAN from Tunnel". This, however, is not an option for the built-in PPTP client in Lion.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Cannot Search Network Drives

Feb 23, 2012

I have set up my mac at work to connect to the smb network, yet I cannot search the shared folders via the finder. I will pre-empt the apologists here, thanks, I don't want to hear you point of view about how I don't need this fuction. I don't want to hear how os x uses and index and apple are wise to disable it in network drives (yet they are not wise enough to implement any other way to search said drives...). I want to put my point across that they better fix it soon.  I also want to hear other people who 've run into this problem and if they 've found any work arounds. There's a free app called easyfind but I am not that happy with it, and there's also some convoluted terminal work around that has to be repeated every time os x starts from what I 've been reading.

I will also be submitting feedback to apple. Ios looking fancy artifacts are all good and well (I dislike them, but I am not that much bothered) but what about some real functionality in core os services such as the finder? Does any one at the os x team really think it's acceptable in 2012 that your mac connects to a network drive in an office and can't search it? I am using a folder in the network to store my work and I can't search that folder to quickly find something to show to a colleague? What do you expect me to do copy it over to my local drive, use a third party app to sync it to the network, and search my local drive instead?

Yet am worried that as I am connected to (given I needed no password to access) is a relatively insecure network, I am leaving myself open to hackers. Is this the case? OS X V10.7 Lion :: Specify Security Type Of Network?

May 23, 2012

I have two computers, one running Snow Leopard, and the other running Lion. Meanwhile, I have a 2Wire Modem supplying me with my internet. On the Snow Leopard Mac, I simply go into system preferences like usual, select my network, and enter the password and everything is great. On the Lion computer however, no matter how many times I enter the password, or how closely I stare at the screen wishing for it to work, it tells me "Connection Timeout" as if I've entered the wrong password, despite the fact that I've entered and checked it more than 7 times now. Trying to see what the difference between the two machines was, I opened the Wi-Fi prompt for both and found this, while the Snow Leopard computer says "The Wi-Fi network "My_Network_Name" requires a WPA password." the Lion computer specifies WPA2. Could the Lion computer think the router is using the wrong security type?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: How To Track Network Usage By Program

Jan 31, 2012

My Macbook Air (running lion) is consuming a large amount of bandwidth. Yesterday 20GB of data were uplodaded. I don't know which program(s) is doing it.
I'm not doing any of the obvious things that might lead to such usage: I don't use torrents, watch internet movies, etc. Even when I'm doing nothing, or have the browsers closed, I'm uploading between 32 kbs and sometimes 3 mbps. Activity monitor shows total network usage, but it doesn't break it down by program. Is there a way to make activity monitor do that? I've installed little snitch, but no program that it tracks is taking up enough bandwidth to account for the usage I'm seeing.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Mac Mini Server Won't Connect To Network

Mar 5, 2012

I have just purchased my first mac (Mini Server w/ quad i7) the other week. I am having serious troubles connecting it to the internet at my work or uni networks. The mini works just fine at home with a simple connection to the modem/router. But at uni there is a small infrastructure and proxy, and at work there is a more complicated setup also (although the firewall isn't blocking any ports or normal internet traffic. There also isn't any MAC address filtering on any of the networks). I have tried both ethernet and WiFi, with no success.

Mac mini obtains local IP, can successfully contact the DNS. Pinging locally to the gateway fails (so so does pinging google, or external addresses). traceroute also fails internally. But that's about as far as I can go on either work or uni networks.

I've fiddled around with all settings i can find under 'Advanced' in the network options. But again nothing.

It is a completely fresh install of OSX 10.7.3, no 3rd part apps or software have been installed yet (this is due to not having an internet connection).

I am COMPLETELY new to mac software - other than knowing the dashboard is down the bottom, the taskbar is up the top and the minimizing/closing is in the top left corner.  I am in the 3rd year of my IT degree at uni, so I know some generic networking troubleshooting, but that's about all.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Share Two Computers Together In A Private Network?

Mar 17, 2012

I am trying to share two computers together in a private network.

I have an iMac running OS X Lion & a Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard. The iMac's name on the network is: Studio The Macbook Pro's name on the network is: djlaptop I turn on file sharing, assign a name and they connect through wi-fi. In the Macbook Pro's Finder (djlaptop) the devices list shows this:

And on the Imac (Studio) it shows this:

I can't seem to get the 'Macintosh HD' of the Macbook Pro to show up on the Imac's finder (running lion). The 'DJ' is the home folder.

Does anyone have any more knowledge on how to get it to show up? I have checked my Finder Sidebar items and all of them are ticked. I want to mount the whole Macintosh HD and not just the home folder.
