OS X V10.7 Lion :: Finder Window Snaps To Top After Copy?

May 11, 2012

When you have a window open in List View, scroll to the middle of the list and then copy a file from another location into that window. When the copy completes the destination window pops to the top of the list, losing your previous focus in that window.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Click Finder Icon On Dock ≠ New Finder Window?

May 22, 2012

Wasn't this an option previous to 10.7.4? It doesn't work now. When clicking the Finder icon in the Dock, a new Finder window would open? I know about Finder prefs - General - Always open folders in new window but this isn't what I mean.I'd have a Finder window open then want to copy/move something so I clicked on the Finder icon in the dock to get a new window.Every time I clicked the Dock icon, I'd get a new Finder window.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Invisible Folders In Finder Window?

Mar 14, 2012

I'm using an iMac Core i7 running 10.7.3 and I wanted to access my Application support folder (in user/Library), I couldn't find it. It seems my user Library has become invisible, but I can't 'see' it from the finder, nor can I access its contents. I know it's there since I tried to make a new folder called, "Library" and the system told me 'there is already one by that name...' Also if I select 'Open' from another program, I can clearly see it, but only from the 'Open' window.

Is this a known issue with Lion 10.7.3? And does anyone know how to resolve this?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Open A Finder Window In A Specific Desktop?

I usually have several desktops open, and want to have a separate Finder window open in whichever desktop I happen to be working in. But it always opens in a desktop where it's always running. Then I have to go get it and put it where I want it.

Is there a key combination that lets me override that default (if that's what it is) and let's me open it where I want it?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Did Finder Change Some Modification Dates When Making A Copy?

Jun 8, 2012

I just copied a very large number of files using Finder and I discovered that some modification dates were changed.  For me this wasn't a problem, but it's strange and I don't understand why it happened.  I wonder if anyone else has seen a similar behavior.  Here are the details:

I have a Mac Pro running under OSX 10.7.4 with 15 GB of RAM and 7 hard disks.  The disks details are as follows: Internal 1 is 500 GB and came with the computer.  It is my boot drive and has a variety of material.  It's about 75% full.

Internal 2 is 1 TB.  It has OSX 10.6.8 on it for use as a repair disk if I need to run TechTools against my main drive or if I need to run SpringCleaning.  It is about 85% full and contains mainly videos of one type or another.

Internal 3 is 2 TB.  It is 98% full and contains mostly .jpg files.  This drive has a single root folder with 3-4 levels of subfolders.  Some subfolders have as many as 5000 folders in them.  The bottom level folders each have anywhere from 20 to 300 files.

Internal 4 is 3 TB.  It was purchased last week because drives 2 and 3 are getting full.  My intent is to copy drive 3 to 4, then copy the data from 2 to 3.  I'll probably retire 2 since my SMART checks are showing problems.

External 1 is 3 TB and is used only for Time Machine to backup internal 1.

External 2 is 4 TB and is used to backup Internal 2 and 3 using ChronoSync.  I'll be changing this to 3 and 4 soon.

4 days ago I installed drive 4 and used Finder to copy the root folder from drive 3 to 4.  That took about a day.  I then ran ChronoSync in Trial Sync mode to see if everything was OK.  (Perhaps I shold have used ChronSync to make the transfer.)  I discovered that about 8,000 files had discrepancies.  I wrote a simple AppleScript to identify any meta data differences between the files on the two drives.  It's been running for about 12 hours and I suspect it will take more than a day to finish.  So far all that script has found are modification date differences.  I've examined about a dozen of the files and they look OK.

Anyone seen anything like this?  Any ideas what happened?  I have three user accounts on this Mac Pro.  The copy was made in one account with nothing else running, but I was doing a variety of work in another account.  The third account was not active. I just did a better search of this forum and discovered a similar case from 2010.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Cannot Open Finder Window And Finder Preferences Don't Stick

Apr 5, 2012

Sometimes I simply cannot open a new finder window. If I use Command-N or if I choose New Finder Window in the Finder menu, nothing happens. If I am using Command-N, I can see the File heading in the Finder menu bar highlighting, and then after a few seconds the highlight goes, but no window opens. Also, clicking on my Downloads icon in the dock, the dialog opens showing all the files, but if I then click on Open in Finder, the dialog closes but nothing happens. Now that I am writing this message, it all works again! That's what I mean by 'sometimes'. This issue can last for tens of minutes. Secndly, and this is still a problem, my finder Preferences do not stick. So for instance, I don't want to see an icon for my hard disk on the desktop, so I untick this in Finder preferences. The icon disappears. If I now re-start, then it comes back. The same happens for removing the empty trash warning and all of the other Finder Preference tick boxes.

Now, when the first problem of not being able to open a finder window suddenly stopped being a problem, the icon for the hard disk suddenly appeared on my desktop. So the two issues are linked. This has been going on intermittently for a few days. I have verified my disk, and repaired permissions.

OS X :: How To Copy / Move Files With Only One Window

Jan 5, 2009

NOTE: I am doing this with Tiger. I have read complaints about how Windows Explorer is better than OS X Finder. One popular complaint is that it is impossible to copy/move a file from one folder to another folder outside the current one without two windows as Finder doesn't have a split window setup like Explorer. This simply isn't true. Mac OS X simply handles this differently than Windows. Heres how...

1. Open a window and go to the folder that you want to copy/move files to.
2. Drag that folder to your sidebar (+T)
3. Navigate to the folder that contains what you want to copy/move.
4. Drag your file(s) to the folder you just put in your sidebar to move them or hold 'option' and drag to copy them.
5. If you don't want the folder you copied to permanently in your sidebar just drag it out.

If your needs are more robust and you want to copy/move between many folders you can drag as many folders to your sidebar as you can fit. Plus your folders will be just as you left them when you go back to them (with the exception of the view). The sidebar doesn't have to be permanent and is your friend .

OS X :: Cannot Resize Finder Window

Mar 17, 2007

I was playing with the maximize button on a Finder window a few days ago and toggling it would yield a different size every time (guess I was amused by that). So it go into a state where the resize corner is out of reach always now. Clicking on the maximize button does not change the size at all and just remains there. I want to be able to resize Finder again. How do I do it? For reference, attached is the screenshot of my desktop with Finder window, so you can see what I mean. I am unable to find a way to get it to a stage where the full window can be shown and I can resize it.

OS X :: Finder Won't Copy A Certain File?

Oct 24, 2010

I'm in the midst of backing up an external drive (to another external drive) via Firewire 800, which works fine, but for some strange reason one specific file won't be copied. It's an iDVD file with a filesize of 12.98 GB. All other files have been copied without any problems.

When copying over to the backup drive all seems fine for a while, then (after having copied 4.01 GB) I hear some "clunking" sounds from the source drive followed by the error message shown below. I've tried copying the said file several times and to different backup drives, and in all instances the file copying stops at 4.01 GB.

I've checked both drives with Disk utility and they check out fine. And the iDVD file opens fine in iDVD.
Could it be that MacOSX needs some free "work space" on one or several of the drives in question, which isn't available?

Cureently, the source drive has only 10.63 GB free space, the destination drive has 582 GB available and the computer's (1.67GHz Powerbook G4) internal 80 GB drive has 23 GB free space.
