OS X V10.7 Lion :: Does NetRestore Image Creation From Install Media Work?
Apr 8, 2012
I have a System Image Utility (SIU) workflow in Snow Leopard. It installs the 10.6.3 DVD, the combo update for 10.6.8 and about 20 packaged Apps. It works.I tried to make a similar workflow for Lion. I installed 10.7.3 on a MacBook Pro, I installed Server Admin Tools 10.7.3 on it and I downloaded the Lion 10.7.3 Installation App from the App store. NetRestore image creation does not work. Instead I get an "unknown error".
Here is my SIU install log:
Creating working path at /Volumes/Spare/April2012Lion
Creating sparse disk image
created: /Volumes/Spare/April2012Lion/TempImage.sparseimage
Installing from OSInstall.collection
Installing to destination volume .....
An unknown error has occurred.

I'm setup a master image in Lion on a MacBook Pro and sucessfully created the image and hosted it up on as a NetRestore. In this image I made a local account that I call "Local Adminisrator" with the short name "ladmin" and I use this account to install all my applications under and also set user settings like finder views, dock icons, turn off resume, turn off backwards scrolling and all those things. Typically in Snow Leopard after I have done this, these settings took affect under other users.
You may be thinking, why not just set user prefrerences under Workgroup Manager and the reason I havn't done this is my server runs Snow Leopard Server and its scheduled for upgrade for the mountain lion release. So far how I've hosted the NetResore images is in a Virtual Machine running on an iMac I have lying around.
So my question is: is there any I can create all user settings under lion in my one administrator account and then have these settings be applied for all the users? It seems like Lion just goes back to the defaults whenever a new user logs in from either active directroy or open directory,

In tiger you could easily disable safe sleep and remove the sleep image file but in Leopard this seems to have changed. Yes you can disable safe sleep & remove sleep image files but only temporarily. As soon as you restart or change energy settings back to default, leopard automatically reverts the safe sleep settings to default and starts creating an image file again
Is there no way to permanently disable/remove these?

I am doing a project at Unnamed Wireless company, and I need to send out a updated Leopard image to 14 MacBook Pro's. this is a Apple that is used as a display device to show web surfing over EVDO. I need to know what is safe to delete or remove on the OS so I can possibly fit it to DVD dual layer media. Unless you can split Mac image copies to multiple discs with the built in image software.

I have files with no creation date or creation date 1969, etc (came from bad settings in camera).
Since I knew the date, I was able to easily fix it via touch:
touch -t 20090110 IMG_1023.JPG
This used to set creation, modification, and access time to 20090111, in Snow Leopard. However, I can no longer do this in Lion. It does set modification and access, but creation date is still screwed up.

I have been unable to find any references on how to best automate certain "tasks" in Lion so that I can do the following:
create predefined DNS names based upon the clients domain name
create predefnined web address based upon the just created DNS
For example.... We have the customer "Sammy's Flower Garden" and his domain is "sammysflowergarden.com". At the command line, I would type:
$ clientsetup sammysflowergarden.com This would then create a base folder structure (this part has already been written)ClientDomains - S - sammysflowergarden.com - production - staging - archive - design - template
[code]....
From what I have read, alot of modifications outside of the Lion serveradmin tooling can result in some rather unusual if not nasty behaviour. If this is true, then I would assume that I could not just write out to a file in /var/named/ and have it automaticly picked up by the server? The same for the apache instance? I still want to be able to use the GUI interface when needed.

When a user copies an image from a browser into PowerPoint 2011 he gets text of a link back to the image, not the image itself. But if he copies from a browser into Word he gets the image, and can then copy the image from Word to PowerPoint. Same results with both Firefox and Safari. Behavior is new so I assume it relates to recent software updates but user does not recall accepting any.

I am trying to build a modular workflow to perform a NetRestore of Lion, rather than the old fashioned way of cloning a system. I am using SIU 10.7.3 on a 10.7.4 client iMac. Our servers are running 10.6.8 Server. I am also trying to follow the directions from the 10.6 Deployment book from Peach Pit, as well as looking things up in SIU's built-in Help and I am running into problems.
Firstly, I am not clear on how to install 3rd party apps such Office 2011 or apps that install via .mpgks. I created a couple of test Workflows and when I tried to include the Office installer, it would fail at the very last step of the NetRestore. Mpgks would not even install at all.
I am also not clear on how to inlcude apps that do not install via packages, such as Firefox.
Secondly, documentation is confusing regarding workflows that work for Netinstall and Netrestore. The Add User action is only available for NetBoot workflows and not NetInstall modular workflows, which doesn't really make sense.
Why is the Add Packages and Post-Install Scrpits available only on NetInstall images? It makes more sense to me that this action should be available for NetRestore workflows.

I have a problem with the recovery partition on my SSD. There is a recovery partition. I can se it in the disk utility but it's seems like it's not working. When I boot the system with the option key I can select the recovery hd but when I do I just get a grey screen with a "forbidden" sign and the computer turns it self off a minute later.I just bought a brand new Macbook Pro 13". I swapped the internal drive to a Samsung 830 SSD but the only way i could get it to boot was to clone the original disk to my new SSD, otherwise the computer couldn't find the drive.
It just booted up with the same grey screen with the "forbidden" sign just like when i now try to boot into the recovery HD.I made a bootstick with the Lion Recovery Disk Assistant v1.0 but it can't boot from that one either. I even made it on a different computer running Lion with a working Recovery HD.I also tried to boot from a Lion dvd (and usb) I made from the image I got from the appstore but of course, the same grey sceen appears. The question now is; how do I get a working Recovery HD in Lion so I can make a clean install? The system is running fine with the clone from the original disk but I want that Recovery HD.

I recently purchased a mint condition iBook G3 for an absolute steal, but the only problem is it has OS X 10.2.8 on it. I have Tiger but it's on a DVD and this iBook doesn't happen to have a DVD drive on it - just the CD-ROM. I can't really install much of any updated apps (Adobe Reader, Flash player, newer web browsers, etc etc) with 10.2.8 so it's crucial I get it on there. I tried using an external DVD drive I have but no go - the disc never popped up.
My only thoughts on how I could get this on there would be to install it from a .iso image somehow or to use a flashdrive. How would I go about doing this? I'm only vaguely experienced in using OS X so I don't know the programs well enough to know what to download or use - something that's just a trial would be fine if I can use something to mount a .iso image of my Tiger disc that I can put on the machine from a flash drive and install it that way. This is my only Mac so the other computers in my house which I could manipulate the Tiger disc on are Windows 7 based.
I really want to update this iBook so I can see webpages properly (Safari 1.0 is the newest I'm allowed to install and I can't update flash!). I saw someone being able to install it from an iPod but they used the firewire - I have an iPhone 3G if it's easier to somehow install it from that. If this were a PC laptop I already know of Windows based ISO mounting programs, I just need to know of something I can install on an old 10.2.8 install (Something that I cannot seem to find anywhere!!) so either that or the ability to turn a flash drive into what would allow the computer to install Tiger straight off the drive as if it were the disc.

Messed up big time: Ran Clean Sweep and it found THOUSANDS of EMPTY folders so I deleted them for a gain of amost 14K (whoopie). NOW NONE of the ADOBE software will OPEN. PhotoShop, After Effects, Dreamweaver (yes, I know they are old but they worked just fine till I deleted empty folders) Oh and a writing program called POWER STRUCTURE which was never an Adobe product (as far as I knew) also stopped working.
I get the "Can not open" report window on the above mentioned items. The Apple programs work fine: FCP, Motion, Sound Track, DVD Pro, iTunes all work. Screenwriter still works but the Adobe stuff-Nothing.
I use TIME MACHINE on a more than weekly basices. I went back to the end of March (before I ran CLEAN SWEEP) and tried to RESTORE. Got a little wondow that tells me:“Applications” can’t be modified or deleted because it’s required by Mac OS X. So I can't RESTORE from the Time Machine.
I ran Disk Utility and Repaired Premmissions Rebooted, draged the Adobe folders to the trash and tried to reinstall from disk. I get the same "failed to open report window" when I try to run INSTALL. IN THE TRASH I tried to click on the deleted empty folders one at a time and the PUT BACK menu item is ghosted so I don't know what to put where. So what can I do besides reinstalling MAC OS? I'm running 10.6.8.

However once it has downloads the icon appears as blankpage and a .sitx file and when I attempt to open it I get a "there is no default application specified to open the document, choose application" message, I've clicked choose application but can't find one that works. Does anyone know what is wrong, and what I can do to solve it?

We've got two laptops in the house (my Powerbook 12 and wife's Macbook) and I've just bought an old 500Mhz AGP Power Mac G4 from eBay, partly to mess around with, partly because it was a great deal, and partly because I want to use it as a media server. What I'd like to do is have:
- iPhoto running on the server - cameras would be plugged in there, photos downloaded etc and photos streamed to the Apple TV
- iTunes running on the server - other machines in the house plus the Apple TV accessing the shared server
- printer sharing running through the server
- Time Machine partitions set up on the server for both my wife and I - set up as double our raw drive space (so 160GB and 320GB)
I've already upped the RAM to 1.25GB and swapped in two 120GB IDE drives. I'm looking to add a Sonnet PCI SATA card and a couple of 1TB Samsung drives, one to host the media and one to host the Time Machine partitions. The media drive would then be backed up weekly to an offboard brick.
So before I go ahead with this grand plan, I thought I'd solicit views on whether it's likely to work, where the bear traps are etc. I guess some of the specific questions I have include:
- is there likely to be a performance issue with the PowerMac in this role?
- can I stream photos to an Apple TV? I know it works with iTunes but thought I'd check on iPhoto
- would Time Machine work OK over a network? Any issue with hosting two TM partitions on the same drive?
The Power Mac is running Tiger, the others are running Leopard.

The media keys on my MacBook Pro (retina, 13-inch, late 2013, OS X 10.9.3) don't work anymore with iTunes. All other function keys work. All other function keys continue to work when "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys" is selected in System Preferences -> Keyboard -> Keyboard, but F7, F8, and F9 still do not do anything. I have not found a way to map them either.

I have a Logitech Mediaplay Mouse that will not work on my iBook: it reads the receiver, but nothing about the mouse works. At first I thought it was because it must use a non-standard driver (and OS X isn't officially supported in the documentation), but after a little experimentation I've found that it works perfectly on my Cube (running Panther), my dad's Powerbook G4 (Tiger), my brother's Sawtooth G4 (Tiger), and every PC I have. My dad and brother don't use USB Overdrive, but the mouse worked perfectly with USB Overdrive on my Cube and it doesn't work on my iBook whether USB Overdrive is installed or not. I have never had any problems with peripherals and my iBook before. I love this mouse, so someone please help me figure how to make it work!

I'm thinking of getting a Mac Mini as an HTPC and for holding my iTunes library and AVI's. I currently have an upscaling DVD player that also has a USB socket for DivX stuff and would like access to my iTunes library also. I was thinking of simply adding an AppleTV to the set-up but I've been considering a Mini also. My questions are:
1) If I have a Mini in the living room with all my AVI's and iTunes stuff on it- can I Wake-On LAN it using a Mac laptop, my iMac or an AppleTV in another room to access my library if it's sleeping? If I wanna watch a movie in bed on an AppleTV I don't want to have to nip downstairs to wake my Mini 'cause it's power-saving.
2) Would a Mini work well as an iTunes media server? Not bothered about accessing it from the internet, just want access through wired and wi-fi within the house.
3) Could I control the Mini remotely from the iMac or laptop over the network to save connecting a keyboard/mouse to it? For example if I need to perform a software update or move some files? I can do that over the network with another Mac, right? Sort of remote desktop?
4) Could I control the Mini, purely for playback, from Remote on an iPod Touch?
5) Is there a hack/fix/workaround to add AVI's (DivX and xVid) to Front Row? I understand these wouldn't be playable on the AppleTV.
I've tried searching for individual answers to the above but it's a bit confusing. I'm not sure of the difference between Back To Mac or Apple Remote Desktop. And I'm not sure about the WOL stuff either.

I have an iso image, which contains a .exe file. The iso image is from a game that runs on windows. Once I run the iso image, wine (version 1.0) starts up, and when I run the exe file, in the process window, I see the exe file for maybe 3 seconds, and then it stops. I don't know if what I am trying to do works. Would I need to install this game some other way and then run* it using wine?

I have parallels 4 installed and I want to install windows XP. My school gives us legal copies of windows 98 and a windows xp upgrade. However, neither of these comes in the form of a CD image. They are both .exe files. Parellels asks for a CD or CD image. Is there a way to install windows 98 from an .exe in parallels? And if so will I be able to use the windows xp upgrade once i have windows 98 installed? I haven't yet tried creating a CD image with the exe file on it. I don't know if this would work because it's all in one file and not a typical windows install disk.

I am trying to install OS X Tiger (10.4) on to my Power Mac G4. I am trying to use a set of burnt CDs created from images (.dmg) that I made a few years ago. I burned the images using UltraISO Premium 9.3.2 installed on my HP Laptop running Vista Home. I have had countless problems trying to get Mac hardware to read burnt OS install discs. After weeks of trying I managed to get Xubuntu Linux on to iBook Clamshell G3's by using a bootable flash drive.

I have a 15inch Macbook Pro from Late 2007; well it worked just fine yesterday, but as of this morning the display will not work! It makes the Chime when you power it up, but no screen display; you can adjust the volume buttons and hear that it is on and the volume can be adjusted. The screen brightener and dimmer does nothing, as well as the keys brightener and dimmer. The apple website said to reset the PRAM which I did and then if that didn't work to reset the SMC which I did and got no change in my problem. And now the part that boggles my mind is I have the cables to hook up the MBP to my TV so I figured I'd atleast be able see it on the TV if the display has crapped out but its doesn't transmit the image to there either. Is it possible I caught a virus that kills displaying ability?

I am currently enrolled in a Korean university where Macs are an absolute requirement. I have bought a Macbook Pro 13" for this purpose, as they wipe the hard drive and reinstall the OS along with some other course software. I was wondering what other software the school might install to monitor what happens on this computer, as I find it very suspicious that the hard drive has to be wiped. After the school finishes this process, this computer can directly log into the school server, as well as print to network printers. They have installed iWork 2009 and some other course related software. In addition to this, the default Snow Leopard OS has been replaced by the regular 10.5 Leopard OS. I have become rather suspicious of snooping software, as none of the visibly installed software/features seem to require the usage of the older operating system. The bottom line: What other monitoring software might the school have installed, and is it safe to UPGRADE to Snow Leopard?
