MacBook Pro :: Re Image - Other Softwares That School Might Install

I am currently enrolled in a Korean university where Macs are an absolute requirement. I have bought a Macbook Pro 13" for this purpose, as they wipe the hard drive and reinstall the OS along with some other course software. I was wondering what other software the school might install to monitor what happens on this computer, as I find it very suspicious that the hard drive has to be wiped. After the school finishes this process, this computer can directly log into the school server, as well as print to network printers. They have installed iWork 2009 and some other course related software. In addition to this, the default Snow Leopard OS has been replaced by the regular 10.5 Leopard OS. I have become rather suspicious of snooping software, as none of the visibly installed software/features seem to require the usage of the older operating system. The bottom line: What other monitoring software might the school have installed, and is it safe to UPGRADE to Snow Leopard?

I need to Install Mac OS 10.4 onto an iBook G3, and it only has a CD-RW drive, so I made a disk image and if I copy it ove to the iBook, will I be able to install from the Disk Image on it's own Hard Drive, or do I have to put it onto a Firewire drive?

i am gonna install VM fusion on my macbook air and the problem is that i left my window xp cd installation at my friends house. Can i install iso image or something like that so that i can ask him to convert it and then send to me via internet so that i can use the image file to install VM fusion. Btw, he and i, not sure how to convert it. anyone knows?

I used to use Norton security softwares for my windows laptop and it works perfect. However, I am not sure if it is good or necessary to use those softwares in MBP. Moreover, since my MBP is retina one, it only has 256GB SSD. So I wonder if I need to buy it.

I was wondering if there is anyway to pretty much copy a Vista partition on a Thinkpad T500 (university Laptop) onto a bootcamp partition, I would need to clone it because my university doesn't give us install discs, they load the OS on the laptop's as a image with all the program specific software, this would help because then I can use my mac for both OSX and class work.

I have a great offer from someone who bought a brand new MacBook Pro 13" this year. They have used it only a couple of times. They're selling it for $975 with Microsoft Office installed. 4GB Ram, 500 GB Hard Drive, 2.4 ghz, etc. Since I'm buying this Macbook Pro for grad school, I figure I'm still getting about a $200 discount, but I know apple usually gives a back to school discount of some sort - like a $100 gift card, or iPod touch, etc. Does anyone know the back to school rewards this year? What should I do? Buy the macbook pro from this guy or buy it from apple?

I bought a 13" MBP for $1099 along with the iPod Touch 8GB and Canon printer. I am having second thoughts about my purchase and would just prefer the Air for basic college needs and, of course, portability. If I do return/exchange at the apple store, can I do this by just exchanging my MBP for a MBA without my free iPod and printer promo being taken away? I have already given the iPod as a gift, but still have the printer on me. Also, I am heavily considering just getting a refurb off Apple.com but I think that will just make the process harder with the free iPod and printer.

im going into high school after this summer, and i'm going into a special program which only has about 100 students, but my county has the worst funding in the state, so i'm not sure how good it is.now for getting into this program/getting me to do it, my dad is giving me 2000$.now i need to decide what computer i want, and i'd like to keep the entire cost of the computer under 1500 1600 at the max so i can buy some other new things like a bigger desk, a usb hub, etc. i currently have a dell xps m1330 1.8ghz intel centrino duo vista buissness 32-bit 2gb ram 120gb hd 2 usb ports, vga out, hdmi out, ethernet, 1394 firewire, and a cd drivei also have a dell mini 10 running windows xp.

I Am using my phone to post this because my computer won't connect to the internet. I am at school and to access the internet you have to connect and then open a browser to accept terms. With my phone the login auto pops up when I connect and same with my iPad but my new MacBook Pro retina doesn't pop anything up and when I go to the browser and try to get the login page to show up all I he is network error. Wifi symbol shows and ! With an alert no internet connection. Tried running diagnostics and that did nothing. Restarted to no avail.

Last night my mac pro was freezed when I was using some softwares and I powered off the pc by holding down the power button.(force quit didn't work) after then my mac became super slow whatever during starting up and opening applications. I wanted to use the hardware detection by holding down the "D" key during start up but it does't work as well.
Actually what is going on on my mac, is it the hard drive problem?

i was wondering if i did a fresh install on mac os x on my macbook pro, and installed all the apps and configured all the things, such as the dock.
then made an image file to a external drive.
would that be possible? or is it easier and more efficient to just install all the apps and such whenever i need to do a fresh install?

I have an iso image, which contains a .exe file. The iso image is from a game that runs on windows. Once I run the iso image, wine (version 1.0) starts up, and when I run the exe file, in the process window, I see the exe file for maybe 3 seconds, and then it stops. I don't know if what I am trying to do works. Would I need to install this game some other way and then run* it using wine?

I have parallels 4 installed and I want to install windows XP. My school gives us legal copies of windows 98 and a windows xp upgrade. However, neither of these comes in the form of a CD image. They are both .exe files. Parellels asks for a CD or CD image. Is there a way to install windows 98 from an .exe in parallels? And if so will I be able to use the windows xp upgrade once i have windows 98 installed? I haven't yet tried creating a CD image with the exe file on it. I don't know if this would work because it's all in one file and not a typical windows install disk.

I am trying to install OS X Tiger (10.4) on to my Power Mac G4. I am trying to use a set of burnt CDs created from images (.dmg) that I made a few years ago. I burned the images using UltraISO Premium 9.3.2 installed on my HP Laptop running Vista Home. I have had countless problems trying to get Mac hardware to read burnt OS install discs. After weeks of trying I managed to get Xubuntu Linux on to iBook Clamshell G3's by using a bootable flash drive.

i've recorded a gameplay of myself playing "Combat Arms" on another windows pc i have, the videos open up fine in win7, but when i transfered them to Mac, in Premiere Pro, i got some codec error, i tried converting it, but it gives me green screens with sounds. Any ideas on how i can fix the green screen, with stripes.
Also, i really want a Sony Vegas Pro 9 on my iMac, are there any other video making softwares which is almost the same as Sony Vegas?

Are there any softwares that can display files from selected folders all at once (for ex. in a single folder view)?
And those files could be sorted regardless of which folders they are from.
Not sure if I've made my point clear....I tried to search by "file manger", but what came up weren't what I wanted.
Let me do some simpler illustration.
folder1 contains file A,C,D
folder2 contains file B,E,H
folder3 contains file F,G,I
suppose there exists a software, such that when I select folder1,2,3, all contained files will be displayed in the order of A,B,C,D,E,F,G,H,I...however, the files themselves are still stored in their original folders. They are just viewed in this single window.

trying to install windows xp using parallels 5. i downloaded and iso file for windows and i double clicked it and it showed on the mac desktop, BUT parallels wont install windows from that. i am sorry if there is a thread already on this matter. i know i am doing something wrong but cant figure it out since i am new to all this.

I recently decided to partition my hard drive on my macbook in order to install Windows 7, but upon doing so I was greeted with a message informing me that some files couldn't be moved and that I would have to reformat my HD. I created a backup disk image using disk utility and proceeded to erase and reinstall my OS. My OS is now reinstalled but I don't know how to go about using my backup to add all my old preferences, files, and applications. I've tried using restore through the disk utility but it isn't allowing me to do so. All I want are my old files and the ability to partition my drive!

How do software that aren't retina compatible yet look on the MBP Retina Display? From my own experience as a developer when using regular sized images and resolutions on the iPhone 4, they come out as blurry. I was thinking perhaps the same thing will occur if the software isn't retina compatible? I e 2x in GUI size and scaled down?

I made a backup image file of D2 LOD and im trying to install it again but the installer keeps telling me that i need to insert disc. So my question is, how do i mount this image so that the installer can use it.
Clarification: I lost the original cd so i just have this backed up image, so the image is legit.I just wanted to play this game and i dont wanna have to go buy the disk again.

I have a System Image Utility (SIU) workflow in Snow Leopard. It installs the 10.6.3 DVD, the combo update for 10.6.8 and about 20 packaged Apps. It works. I tried to make a similar workflow for Lion. I installed 10.7.3 on a MacBook Pro, I installed Server Admin Tools 10.7.3 on it and I downloaded the Lion 10.7.3 Installation App from the App store. NetRestore image creation does not work. Instead I get an "unknown error".
Here is my SIU install log:
