It doesn't work now.When clicking the Finder icon in the Dock, a new Finder window would open? I know about Finder prefs - General - Always open folders in new window but this isn't what I mean.I'd have a Finder window open then want to copy/move something so I clicked on the Finder icon in the dock to get a new window.Every time I clicked the Dock icon, I'd get a new Finder window.

OS X :: Keyboard Stops Working But Only In Finder?
Mar 4, 2008My macbook pro keyboard and my silver Apple bluetooth keyboard (primary keyboard) randomly stop working in Finder can anyone explain? Heres the details:
I usually use my wireless keyboard, and when this happens the keyboard keeps working with everything else, and only stops working in Finder i.e. I can't edit the names of files or even click through files with the arrow keys. (the Macbook Pro keyboard also stops working-only in Finder-during these times too as I just tested..)
Also, Finder keeps working its not frozen or anything, I can click around in it with the mouse and open files/apps, etc.
This has only happened approximately 3 or 4 times (I've had the keyboard since the new ones were released and the computer for 1.5 yrs)
Lastly, when I restart the OS (10.4.11) the problem disappears for a week or more..

Sep 15, 2009I recently repartitioned and reformatted my external HD. now, he simply doesn't work anymore. time machine always hangs after exactly 5,5 Gb. tried formatting it at least 5 times. used disk EHBO. Still, I can't even copy/ paste something to it without the process hanging, and the Finder with it.I can't get it to format in Windows either. I'm running 10.6.1 SL . Is my HD dead?

Feb 5, 2012After combo update to 10.7.3, in Safari 5.1.3 the "show in finder" magnifying glass will not open my downloads folder to show downloaded files.That is, if I have invoked "Show Downloads" from the View menu in Safari and then hover over the magnifying glass, you see a "show in finder" in gray under the downloaded file's name. In the past, clicking the magnifier then would open a Finder window and highlight the downloaded file.

Apr 9, 2009I have tried all of the combinations of settings I can think of. Currently I have the size column allows show up as well as having "calculate all sizes" enabled. I can always find the value I want with get info, but some of my directories and files display the size while others don't. I can't figure out any real pattern, aside from the following:
1. my non-bootable secondary hard drive doesn't display any sizes in Finder
2. sometimes sizes will be displayed for a particular set of directories and files and sometimes they won't (this is not a case of not being patient enough for the values to be calculated). The only pattern here seems to be that all files in particular directory will show file size or none.
3. sizes can not work in finder, but will show up in path finder or vice-versa.

Aug 6, 2009I got a new Macbook today, and installed the Mac OS X 10.5.6. It stalled so I shut down, and when I logged in again Finder and Spotlight doesn't work. Though my hard drive says is labelled Mac HD: Mac OS X 10.5.6 , I am continuously prompted that Spotlight closed unexpectedly. And when I try to reinstall the Mac OS X, the DVD no longer appears on the desktop and Finder too, cannot be opened for me to locate the DVD.

Apr 18, 2012I have spotlight configured to not index the folder ~/Development, because it contains a lot of jars and I couldn't figure out how to turn off indexing of jars.Â
1) I open finder to ~/Development/Foobar, which is a folder containing other folders containing files ending in ".png".
2) I go to the search field in the toolbar and type "png", switch the search mode to "File Name", but nothing is found.Â
It looks like Finder's search function is completely broken if the folder being searched is not indexed by spotlight. Finder should search without the indexes instead, or the search field should be disabled if it is broken.Â
Is there an way to search a folder that is being excluded from spotlight indexing? How do I prevent spotlight from indexing the contents of jar files?

This is a big roadblock to our office workflow. Reindexing doesn't fix the issue and we can see clearly that the files we are searching for are there.

Nov 30, 2014For some times now I have problems with finder. First I thought it was a problem accessing the network but I also have the problem with the local folders!!Â
After logging to my account, it works well for some times and then suddenly (may be after accessing machine on my network - Synology NAS) finder begin to show all folders as they are empty!!!Â
The funny thing is that if for instance I do a "file/open" within an app or do an attachment and so access a "windows like finder" it works!!
But if I use the finder ... folders are empty (shown as ...).Â
The only thing to get everything back is to restart the computer (and many times I have to hard stop the machine as the finder is not working anymore and my mac mini don't want to restart. I keep the desktop background and nothing happened!!Â
The strange thing is that it seems I don't have the problem on my MacBook Pro!! The mac mini was a clean install!Â

Control click stopped working and does not give me a contextual menu in the finder or any other program (including Stickies or Word) anymore.
I tried resetting Keyboard & Mouse System Preferences to default. I looked for Finder preference, or Finder preference file (it used to be "com.apple.finder.plist" according to an old 2005 forums.Macrumors post) but i could not find one.
I just reinstalled Leopard a couple of weeks ago, and do not want to go thru that again if i can avoid it.

Jun 19, 2007Q. I stopped an update installer of some Apple software and the Finder, now crashes without showing the desktop. Only the Apple logo and a spinning Beachball which never disappears. I can start up in the Unix mode and also in the Windows mode. I have an Imac with Osx 10.4. I could reinstall the system but probably I will loose a lot of unique files and poto's. In the Unix mode I have removed the Installer file from the desktop but it didn't change the startup. I have little experience with Unix.

Nov 3, 2010I've noticed that I can add folders from network shares (in this case samba) to my sidebar in finder but I can't seem to add the actual share folder.So if my server has the share stuff and inside stuff there is a folder named documents I can drag that folder to places in my sidebar but I can't do the same with stuff. Feb 4, 2012I'm running Lion 10.7.2 and have noticed in Finder that the contents of many folders aren't visible. This seems to be for newer files added. For example, I copied a folder from a thumb drive, into my (username) -> (Documents) folder. I see that folder name, but there are no files inside. When I "Get Info" about that folder, it tells me, as expected, there are 30 items, and almost a MB of data. Furthermore, when I back up to SuperDuper, I can actually see what I'm looking for - all files are there in that folder and for every other folder! In addition, searching in Spotlight finds any/all of the files contained within the folder. My problem, again, is that no files, none, not one, are visible in various folders, yet they exist, and are retrievable, via Spotlight. Should I do a disk check, or other recommended procedures?Â

Mar 20, 2012My iMac have been working fine until today.
There was a lot of stuff in the Software Upgrade tool that I recently installed (today). I worked for about half an hour until I noticed that the computer was extremly slow - so I looked in the Activity Monitor. I saw that Finder was using 2 GB of "real memory". So I restarted Finder.
After about 1 minute Finder was consuming 2 GB of real memory again. So i restarted my computer. After about 1 minute Finder was consuming 2 GB of memory - again. Currently Finder is using 1.71 GB of memory. What can I do? I can't work with a computer this slow, Also - can I shut down Finder completly so that it doesn't restart?

Mar 30, 2012I have this weird and annoying problem with "show in finder".I used at one point that "defaults write -g NSFileViewer string different.plist.than.finder" to try to change the default finder, it didnt work, so I just "defaults delete -g NSFileViewer". So this is out of the way, I have no NSFileViewer in any file whatsoever.Now, for the weird stuff. If I use "show in finder" from the dock, nothing happens(neither cmd-click, of course). If I use it in safari's download list, it OPENS the file. If I use it in iTunes, on media or apps, it WORKS properly, it shows the item in the finder. If I use it in Xcode on a file in my project, it just switches to that file(so, basically, it just opens it just like Safari).
I tried deleting the dock and finder plist files in Preferences, didnt work. If I login with a different account it works properly. I really dont want to delete the whole preferences folder. I REALLY dont xD.I'm really stuck here, since all apps try and open the file(except Dock that does nothing) but iTunes works properly.if I use "Reveal in finder" in Spotify, it also opens the file(it starts to play in iTunes).if I use "Reveal in finder" in Forklift it just opens it as well.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Finder Looks Different On External HD?
May 28, 2012I have recently noticed that my finder looks different but only in one location. As you can see below (screen 1) the "Name, Date Modified, Size, Kind" bar at the top is white, even though if i go into a folder, it goes back to blue (screen 2). Also I am unable to sort (by name) when it is white. This only happenes on the root directory on my external hard drive. All other locations work normally.Â

Jun 3, 2012I just upgraded to Lion- yes, I'm a late adopter- and now, my "Finder" won't open in the dock. I have repaired permissions, and I can "work around it" by clicking on my apple logo and doing a force quit on finder. After I do, the dock icon will work. However, if I then reboot, I'm back to square one.Â
