May 21, 2012I installed OS 10.7.4 update. Ater that the finder, safari or any program except for Google Chrome.Before that everything was working perfect. Â

OS X :: IMac Won't Start Up - Finder Hangs Up
Sep 28, 2010I was working on my iMac (last year's model) today and the finder hung up (beach ball spinning). I force quit the finder, but it then refused to relaunch (although I could use other programs as before). I then tried to restart the computer but couldn't, and had to force the power off by holding the power button for a few seconds. Now when the computer starts up, it gets to the point where the "loading wheel" (with external spokes) starts turning, but then this "wheel" freezes. I put in my TechTool Pro 5 disc to start it up from that, but the same thing happens (yes, I have been holding down "C" when it starts to make sure that it uses it as a start-up disc). I am at a total loss, and live far from any computer repair store.

Sep 11, 2014I am struggling with tags. I can watch the activity monitor on the server as we tag and see the finder spike thru the roof (then beach ball for two minutes!) even when tagging just 40 files. If I tag just one file I am getting the finder up to almost 50% activity.Interestingly, I also have someone tagging files over the network using the same iCloud account and I'm seeing huge activity spikes in icbaccountsd and sometimes quicklookd. I don't know if they are related but I can say that the networked machine also experiences difficulties in the same way.The files are on (various) external RAID enclosures that are connected via eSATA or SAS.
It seems only to affect the Finder because any apps running (even Premiere CC 2014 which is accessing projects and footage on those RAIDs over the network) seem to be fine. Even as the Finder goes thru the roof and then crashes.The problem also persists when tagging files on the internal hard drive. I just selected 3000 jpegs, tagged them all with ONE original tag and... BOOM Finder (Not Responding) 198% CPU and beach ball for two minutes. Then the finder goes back to being responsive.
I understand that this is NOT the norm and I'm not seeing many similar complaints.We have already forced the server to re-build the spotlight index. Next I am going to move the RAID to another computer and will update with results.I really hope that Apple takes tags all the way. Currently the foundation is there but searching is lame and tagging a lot of files is slow even without the issues above. Too much clicking...
Software :: Gets To The Login Screen And Hangs, Actually Loads Up Finder Etc?
Jul 13, 2010I have a much loved ibook G4 14" (late 2004??). It has just died. Well, in so much as it won't boot up. The ibook either gets as far as the apple grey screen and hangs, gets to the login screen and hangs, actually loads up finder etc and hangs or none of the above. Sometimes flashing red, blue green black.
After lots of research online over the past few days I tried the following: I have tried safe mode (not working), starting the command prompt screen (single user and verbose modes), started open firmware, and tried booting from a CD. Nothing works as the boot gets so far then hangs. I have flashed the PRam, resetted the NVRam, and have stopped short of opening up the case to dismantle it!
I just really want to access the hard drive now. I have tried Target disk mode and linked the ibook via firewire to a PowerPC G5, but the G5 doesn't recognise the ibook!? System profiler on the G5 shows the target mode connected and working fine via firewire, just the icon for the ibook/target doesnt mount on the G5 desktop so I cant access it.Currently the boot freezes within a couple of minutes.
I tried the hardware test CD that came with the ibook years ago, I have also tried booting from an OSX Panther CD. I'm assuming they would be bootable.I forgot to mention that in linking with the G5 in target mode, a disk that I put in the ibook drive appeared on the G5 desktop as an external drive, therefore I wonder why i cannot see the actual ibook hard drive mounted. The CD drive works as it mounted on the G5.
Does the ibook have an actual PRam battery that can be replaced? Maybe this is an issue?Am I able to actually remove the hard-drive and access it as an external drive somehow?
Intel Mac :: When Hook Up Usb Drives, Finder Hangs On Searches
Jun 5, 2012I can hear the drives start spinning when I start to do a search, but they don't do it well enough, because generally the finder hangs and often I have to crash out and restart. The problem doesn't occur with the drive I use for time machine, so I can leave that hooked up, but often I have other drives attached so I can access material on them. Trouble is, they seem to spin down when I'm not using them and then they cause trouble whenever I do a search. L. P.S. I'm on a 2009 imac running 10.7.4. I have 4 gigs of RAM.

Jun 26, 2014Friend has 13" MBP mid 2010. We upgraded to Mavericks about six weeks ago. Then, about a month ago, any operation involving the Finder hangs, and I get a beach ball that lasts at least several minutes. Other applications, like MS Office and browsers, are unaffected unless we try to open, save, or close a document. Attempting to open any folder causes the same problem.Â
I replaced his old hard drive with a new SSD and did a restore from TM, and the problem came back after a few days. Otherwise the machine works fine. Disk Utility reads fine.Â
I created a new account as a test, and did not have the same problem. So, I'm convinced it is something to do with his account, or with some app that affects his account. It doesnt' seem to be a system problem because no one else in his SOHO is experiencing it. And, because the second account works, I don't think it is a hardware problem like a bad cable (I've read lots about this).
I'm going to try to strip down the machine and delete a bunch of stuff like Dropbox, and I'll recreate his NAS access to see if that works.
His keychain won't remember one of two NAS passwords (I mount a TM volume and a production share on boot). TM mounts automatically but the production mount asks for his password every time. I've tried Keychain first aid.Â

It doesn't work now.When clicking the Finder icon in the Dock, a new Finder window would open? I know about Finder prefs - General - Always open folders in new window but this isn't what I mean.I'd have a Finder window open then want to copy/move something so I clicked on the Finder icon in the dock to get a new window.Every time I clicked the Dock icon, I'd get a new Finder window.

Mar 24, 2012I acquired a new Macbook Pro laptop using 10.7.3. I have tried to use the Migration Assitant multiple times and it stops at 2 hours 7 minutes to go. Nothing ever seems to transfer. I ran disk first aid and fixed a number of permission issues. Still it hangs up. Tried to transfer files only and it seemed to run, but no files transferred.I would like to download IDVD, Aperture, Word, Excell and Powerpoint but there seems to be no way to get files to transfer?

Jun 1, 2012My iMac hangs periodically every time I use it. It doesn't seem to show a discernable pattern with regard to activities I'd be performing when it hangs. I could be browsing or checking/composing emails; or perhaps organizing files, iTunes, movies, etc.Â
iMac would hang for a few seconds and it's not just the active app that hangs. Everything is affected -- background apps, dock, menu bar, etc. This would happen a few times each day. I have 8GB of RAM installed and would usually maintain about 3.5 - 5.5 free RAM. I even stopped using Safari cuz it hogs too much RAM. Â
P.S. Mac hanged as I was about to click on the radio button for "Product - iMac" below. Mac also hanged earlier which prompted me to send out this call for help....

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Addressbook Hangs On Startup?
Jun 26, 2012about half a year ago the address book in my Macbook started to grow uncontrolled until it had more than 100000 records, wherof 99% were empty or fragmented, This caused the app to be very slow and freeze from time to time.
I tried to delete the corrupted records, but because of the large database and an old Macbook, it took ages to delete just a couple of hundred records a time. Now the app refuses to start (it hangs before it even shows up), even as the first app after a reboot.
The iCloud address book is OK on the web and on my iPad, so if I just could empty and reset the app in Macbook, I could be back on track.
I've tried to move the addressbook file (AddressBook-v22.abcddb, 125,3 MB) to another library, and I've deleted the .plist files, but it doesn't help.
I can see that the process findnames grows to almost 1 GB in memory if I don't stop it, and so does the process AddressBookMobileMeSharingAgent ...Â

Mar 22, 2012I've just turned File Vault on on my MacBook Pro 13". I've followed all the steps: noting the FileVault Key, storing it into Apple and restarting my Mac. When my Mac has started, it has asked me for my login, and everything goes OK until the moment my desktop appears. At that moment in time, my Mac hangs, and I get the "colourful beach ball" and nothing seems to happen. I do have a backup on my Time Machine and I can format the disk and start over, but I don't understand why my Mac is freezing just because I've turned FileVault on.

- Unselecting Applications so just the user files are transferred

OS X V10.7 Lion :: HP Laserjet 2550L Prints One Job Then Hangs?
May 10, 2012I've noted that HP Laserjet 2550 will only take one job and then then the iMac will claim it is waiting for the printer to become available (forever). Unplugging/replugging the USB will not clear this though the driver does note that it is unplugged/replugged.Â
It seems like the printer doesn't know that the last job was done and thus holds off all other jobs.Â
The only way to take another job is to power-cycle the printer.Â

Mostly Mail, iTunes, and Safari. What is more annoying however is when the computer is inactive for an hour or so, I lose internet connectivity and have to shut down and reboot in order to get it back. I am on a wired connection and sharing another wired connection through the second ethernet port.It seems like 10.7.4 really messed with my machine...

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Changed Permissions On Startup Disk - Now MBA Hangs Up On Boot
Apr 17, 2012I have a new MacBook Air running Lion. Every time I use my backup software, it changes the permissions on my external drives, and I have to change them from read only to read & write, so I've gotten in that habit. At one point, I noticed that the permissions on my internal *startup disc* were read only, so I (foolishly, I now know) changed the permissions on the startup disc to read & write, with apply to all enclosed items checked. As I continued working, I got messages that a number of extensions could not be used and will be disabled (or something like that). I decided to reboot, so the computer could reset and hopefully correct things.
When I tried to boot, it hung up on the grey screen with the Apple logo and the spinning clock/gear. I let it spin for a while, then forced power down and tried to boot in safe mode. The progress bar appeared as it's supposed to, but when the progress bar finished, it went back to the grey screen and hung up again. I let it spin for over 40 minutes before powering down, just in case it was doing diagnostics or something. I don't have access to the original OS DVD (nor do I have an optical drive to put it in). Any way for getting the computer to boot, at least in safe mode?

MacBook Pro :: Frequent Hangs After Adding Seagate Momentus XT 750GB With Lion
Apr 22, 2012I installed a Momentus XT 750 (ST750LX003-1AC154 firmware SM12) into my MacBook Pro (late 2009). I then did a full clean install of OSX 10.7 and updated to 10.7.3. Lately I have been getting odd hangs of applications and eventually the OS, finally I have to hard-power it down and reboot.Â
No SMART errors reported, PRAM and SMC have been reset. I am on the latest firmware and EFI for this particular MacBook Pro.  I do not think that this drive is spinning down if idle.Â
As far as I know there is not a firmware update for the XT 750 drive and I am on SM12. Â
What else can I try to get this machine stable? This is a 750GB hybrid SSD drive and I read about lots of issues with SSD and hybrid-SSD drives in previous generation MacBook Pros, particularly with Lion. Â

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Why Can't See Files In Finder
Feb 4, 2012I'm running Lion 10.7.2 and have noticed in Finder that the contents of many folders aren't visible. This seems to be for newer files added. For example, I copied a folder from a thumb drive, into my (username) -> (Documents) folder. I see that folder name, but there are no files inside. When I "Get Info" about that folder, it tells me, as expected, there are 30 items, and almost a MB of data. Furthermore, when I back up to SuperDuper, I can actually see what I'm looking for - all files are there in that folder and for every other folder! In addition, searching in Spotlight finds any/all of the files contained within the folder. My problem, again, is that no files, none, not one, are visible in various folders, yet they exist, and are retrievable, via Spotlight. Should I do a disk check, or other recommended procedures?Â

Mar 20, 2012My iMac have been working fine until today.
There was a lot of stuff in the Software Upgrade tool that I recently installed (today). I worked for about half an hour until I noticed that the computer was extremly slow - so I looked in the Activity Monitor. I saw that Finder was using 2 GB of "real memory". So I restarted Finder.
After about 1 minute Finder was consuming 2 GB of real memory again. So i restarted my computer. After about 1 minute Finder was consuming 2 GB of memory - again. Currently Finder is using 1.71 GB of memory. What can I do? I can't work with a computer this slow, Also - can I shut down Finder completly so that it doesn't restart?

Mar 30, 2012I have this weird and annoying problem with "show in finder".I used at one point that "defaults write -g NSFileViewer string different.plist.than.finder" to try to change the default finder, it didnt work, so I just "defaults delete -g NSFileViewer". So this is out of the way, I have no NSFileViewer in any file whatsoever.Now, for the weird stuff. If I use "show in finder" from the dock, nothing happens(neither cmd-click, of course). If I use it in safari's download list, it OPENS the file. If I use it in iTunes, on media or apps, it WORKS properly, it shows the item in the finder. If I use it in Xcode on a file in my project, it just switches to that file(so, basically, it just opens it just like Safari).
I tried deleting the dock and finder plist files in Preferences, didnt work. If I login with a different account it works properly. I really dont want to delete the whole preferences folder. I REALLY dont xD.I'm really stuck here, since all apps try and open the file(except Dock that does nothing) but iTunes works properly.if I use "Reveal in finder" in Spotify, it also opens the file(it starts to play in iTunes).if I use "Reveal in finder" in Forklift it just opens it as well.
