I give up. I can't find the answer to this. So, I'll just ask and hope.I have a mid-2011 mini that was upgraded to Lion. However, it had a Bootcamp partition running Windows 7. Apparently, whoever upgraded my machine didn't create a recovery boot disk before upgrading. So, I have no recovery partition and apparently no ability to create a recovery boot usb without one.

I was doing a routine maintenence and Disk Utility is telling me I have a few block counts askew. Everything seems to be working fine ( on the surface of things ) but like to be anal and would like to do a repair. However, I don't have a Recovery partition and the App store has decided that I haven't purchased Lion although I did, I can show you the bank statement. I installed a new hard disk not so long back ( I guess this is the reason why the App store decided I didn't purchase Lion!? ) and reinstalled from a Time Machine backup it wasn't seemless but I'm techy enough, to make it work, just not a big fan of spending my days learning terminal commands.I have a mid 2009 MPB so can't do internet recovery, the Recovery Disk Assistant won't let me create a Recovery Disk on an exernal drive since, yes you've guessed it, I don't have a Recovery Partition.
Am quite happy to reinstall as long as it doesn't compromise my data but can't find the 'restore my purchases' button on the app store else if there is a less than obtuse ( and none-sketchy ) method of creating the partition HD.
I'm on a 2008 model Mac Pro 8-core system for work. For whatever reason it doesn't have a recovery partition. I read that if I don't have a recovery partition, I can't make a recovery USB bootable drive....so how do I make one? And no, I cannot reinstall the OS on here, that would be beyond detrimental to what's going on here. (too many details to get into)Â
Alternatively, can I make one with my 10.8.5 MacbookPro at home and run it here on my Lion system?Â

I have university work I need to complete tomorrow. Machine is a 13" MacBook Pro with Bootcamp and windows 7 installed but the problem is on the Mac partition sequence of events:-I was using MS Word for Mac when it crashed as being unable to write to the disk.I went to utilities and ran a verify permissions - failures were found - one marked as not repairable I ran repair permissions - it repaired all but one I ran verify disk - it said it there was an error which could not be repaired - reformat the drive a restore from backup I have full time machine backup so thought no problem I shut down the machine and restarted using Cmd R and went to disk utilities - no "format disk" option.Browse on internet finds I have to delete the "Macintosh HD" partition - re- create it and restore - ok Find I cannot delete the partition because it cannot unmount the drive - because I have booted from the recovery partition which is on that drive - catch 22 Try to boot from original Snow Leopard disk - LION wont let you do it Read some more on Internet and find I can boot from the Lion Revovery HD on a USB Only way of getting it is to download it or create it using the machine I want to recover - but that machine won't boot in OS X ?...Tried the Lion Internet install but it simply fails with an " error occurred please try again.how I can get a recovery USB written in order to externally boot my Mac and recover it ?

I have not been able to connect to the AppStore. My internet connection may be too slow or there is some other problem. The Apple helpdesk is less than helpful. They do not assist with connection problems. Result: No AppStore for me. So How do I upgrade to Lion? All articles about Lion recovery assume that you have an internet connection. I have news: not every internet connection counts as an internet connection as far as Apple is concerned. Funny thing is, that all updates to Leopard and Snow Leopard went without problems.Â

Instead of simply booting the machine, it goes into the Recovery Partition and runs Disk Tools. Once in Disk Tools, I Quit, select my HD as the boot drive, and reboot again. THEN it runs the normal System off the HD. It seems a flag of some sort was left turned on that makes the machine thinks it's mid-install.Â

My connection is flaky, and keeping a connection for the number of hours the downloader indicates is pratically impossible. Everytime If restart the download, the installer throws away what I downloaded previously. What process should I follow to restore my recovery partition and apply the current state of the machine from a backup? (The process should not involve anything I don't have, like USB memory sticks, Lion CDs, etc....) Supplementary questions which are only relevant if the answer is "you can't" (which would seem to be a major bug!) Or is there a clever method to install a recovery partition onto an existing disk (which clearly has space for it)?
I have searched for it but all the results I found have either not mentioned that it works without reinstalling but look like it's needed, or do say "reinstall". If I install Lion to an external disk, can I boot from that and use the recovery disk assistant tool to restore the partition to my internal disk? I'm trying to create a Boot Camp partition but I'm unable to make one large enough. Using the Book Camp disk tool, I'm not able to create a partition larger than 68GB.Â
When I open disk utility, it shows me that ~250GB are used as a startup partition. Is this standard for Lion? My hard drive shows ~203GB free so space shouldn't be an issue. The disc utility tells me the startup partition cannot be resized, locking up the ~250GB so I'm unable to do anything.Â
Is there a way to resize this startup partition or is my only option getting a larger hard drive. My goal was to make ~100GB partition for Windows and Boot Camp. I used debug in disc utility to look at any hidden partitions but they only amounted to ~250MB, not effecting much.Â
I have Windows 7 installed on my sons MacBook Pro.Â
The Drive is partitioned at 500GB for Windows and 300GB for Mac.
In windows, I need to shrink the Windows drive, and then create 2 extra drives from it.
However, I can shrink the drive, but when I try to Format, it tells me that it cannot find the drive, and then it changes the drive types to all "Dynamic" including the Mac Drive.
And once this happens, I can no longer access the Mac drive during Boot, and windows will not load, as it cannot find the drive during windows boot up. And which point, I have to restore the system and it takes up to 6 hours to installed Lion, as my Internet is slowing that a cold winters day.Â
So, my question is the following.
How can I successfully shrink the drive.
Then Partition the FREE space
Then Format to NTFS without loosing drive type and integrity?Â

View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently made a clone of my Windows XP Pro SP3 installation (its roughly about 14GB according to Finder/WinClone) so i made a 80GB partition on my 320GB drive and it gives me this error message:
the WinClone came from a 500GB internal drive and ive gotten winclone images to restore to a MBP before but not sure why its giving me this error code, anyway to restore the image to the new partition (which was created with Bootcamp) as i no longer have access to the old machine it was running on.
First some background info. I recently purchased a 1TB hard drive for my 13" MBP, and I am about to do a clean install of OSX 10.6 and Win7 64bit on separate partitions.
And I want to setup the partitions before I install using Disk Utility. The reason for this is because I'm under the assumption that when creating a NTFS partition its better for the disk to be blank so it can put the MFT(Master file table) and MFT Mirror wherever it wants instead of some random spot on the disk (that way disk writes will be faster). The MFT thing was true when converting a FAT32 disk to NTFS. Nativity formatted NTFS disks were always faster then ones converted from FAT32, because the MFT was spread out instead of at the start of the disk.
I'm worried that installing OSX and then using the bootcamp utility will cause the MFT on my NTFS partition to end up in a un-optimal place and disk Reads/Writes will be slower.
Ok, so here's my questions.
1.) Should I be using a GUID Partition Table or Master Boot Record(Remember OSX 10.6 and Win7)?
2.) Should I use Disk Utility to Create a the OSX partition and then leave the second partition as Free Space? / Or should I use a third party utility and make the OSX partition and the NTFS partition at the same time?
3.) If I do create the partitions Manualy, will bootcamp still work correctly?
4.) Should I Use Journaled or Case-Sensitive Journaled on my OSX partition?
I know all of the questions were stupid, but there isn't any info on the web about it.
Recently my OS X Lion Partition disappeared. I have a late 2008 Macbook Pro. It's partitioned with Lion (10.7.4) and Windows 7. A few days ago when I started up, it booted up to the Recovery partition. I didn't know what was going on at the time. So I booted again w/ option key and it only gave the Windows and Recovery partitions as the options. After searching for a solution, I found a blog that said I can set up Lion on a external drive and I did that. I booted from the external drive and saw my "missing" partition in the Finders window. I clicked on it and it had folders and they were not accessible, in other words it was damaged. I tried to repair using disc utility and it couldn't be repaired. I installed DiskWarrior on the external drive (w/Lion) and I was able to repair the bad partition. I can now see all my folders and files. I tried verifying it in Disk Utility and it says it's fine now. I can access it from my Finders window as if it is normail again. Thing is, I can boot into it. If I press the option key at startup, it doesn't appear. I also can't select it as a startup disk as it doesn't show. I've tried searching but to no avail. Does anyone know what I can do so I can boot from this partition. I'm trying to get this to work so I don't have to reinstall and start over. My time machine back up is too old too (my bad).

I installed Snow leopard from a retail disk on the second partition. The installation went fine, and I got the message at the end that the installation was successful, and to restart the computer. Â
When I restart it, it just goes to the gray Apple screen, with the spinning gear, and never gets farther than that. The gear is spinning. Â
I can still boot successfully into Lion. Once I booted into Lion, I chose the Snow Leopard partition as the Startup Disk, but the same thing happens - just the gray Apple screen and spinning gear. I've let the machine sit for half an hour in that state, but it still does nothing but the spinning gear.Â

Today i formatted my entire disk, but made it Journaled, Encrypted. It installed (actually "downloaded aditional files"), and then booted with a cross/do not proceed sign. I booted from the install disk again, got an error telling me to reinstall OS X. I was never asked for my password, and when i started disk utility, the disk was locked.
