OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Switch On Four Finger Track-pad Gestures?
Jun 22, 2012
I finally upgraded to Snow Leopard (clean install, then restored backup via migration assistant), and wanted to make use of the three and four finger gestures on the trackpad. However, in my system preferences - trackpad - there is no option for further gestures or similar. My macbook is fairly old (mid-2007), is the trackpad not equipped for that?

I was wondering if anyone knew how to change the 4 finger gestures built into OSX? I've looked around and found no way to override them. If nobody is knows directly how to accomplish this I'd also be interested in knowing what libraries the handlers may reside in so I can poke around and try and do it myself.
I'm also interested in trying to find a way to make 3 finger tap do a middle click. Or something along those lines.

After installing 10.6.2 my three and four finger gestures don't work. I have ticked and un-ticked it in the preferences and nothing.

All jokes aside, I read in Snow leopard (perhaps incorrectly) that two finger and four finger gestures on the trackpad can be used, is there any program on Leopard (10.5.8) that enables these? Specifically it would be great if I could go back in my internet browser by swiping with two fingers.

not too sure how multitouch tech works. is it software or hardware? if it's the hardware does that mean that it runs on the same tech as my 2007 macbook's trackpad?

no restarts, updates or changes) my 3 and 4 finger gestures stopped working. Google led me to this thread: [URL] Seems several people had this problem and there are two solutions posted in that thread. The one I tried first, and it worked, was to create a new user account and switch to it. The gestures worked fine in that account so I tried my original account again and all was good. I deleted the new account and things are still back to normal so far.

I've been away from my iMac for several months but I remember while checking this site or another one about some software to be able to use finger gestures with the magic mouse. I'm guessing it was similar to how I use on my MBP laptop. Can someone point me to this software?

Remember, this only works for early 2008 MBP's [edit: and early 2008 MBA's]. These are the ones that already support "multi-touch" (three finger swipe, pinch zoom, rotate). Step 1 - Update to 10.5.6 Step 2 - Download and unzip the modified kext file attached to this post Step 3 - Delete the AppleUSBMultitouch.kext file in System/Library/Extensions (this should require the administrators password)Step 4 - Put the modified kext file you downloaded at Step 2 in System/Library/Extensions (this should also require the administrators password)

I tested with the security setting enabled that requires password when coming out of screen saver, and the gestures still work but all I get is a black screen when gesturing up, and a 'flash' and a black screen when gesturing down.

Suddenly, gestures stopped working. I have no clue why. Rebooting seems to have cleared the problem, but could this be a signal of a deeper problem? hardware failure? softtware corruption..maybe a setting somehwere?

I am surprised Apple did not include a three-finger back and forth between folders in the new Stacks in Snow Leopard. Are there any Terminal hacks yet? Where you looking for this feature? I think it would be a lot easier navigation.

I always used the upwards four finger scroll to get to the desktop but after installing Snow Leopard it doesn't work, they hide but then pop back straight away or go into expose mode. Is this a known problem?

Magic Mouse has this ballyhooed two-finger swipe feature that (in any browser, apparently - I use Chrome) lets you go back and forth on a page. That's great, except I rarely need to go back or forth; switching tabs, however, is way more useful. Is there a way to set up the mouse to do that instead?

Just curious as to whether or not I could assign gestures to commands? I want to make a four finger swipe left/right switch tabs in Safari. It's possible to do with with my Logitech mouse but when I'm not using my mouse I feel as if a four finger swipe would be much easier than command+shift left/right.

I'm having some problems with Snow Leopard, in 64 bit mode. Is there a way to turn it to 32 bit ? I'm using a Mac mini 2.53 GHz Core 2 Duo with 4 GB (the max it will ever have), so I don't think it needs 64 bit.
Is there any advantage/disadvantage to run in 32 bit, if you just have 4 GB of ram ?

I use a Fortigate router and would like to track what sites are visited by the people using my network. Was told if you set up a syslog server we can dump the information from the fortigate to it.
I am using a MacMini server 10.6 and would like to know the best way of going about this. Is there a program out there I can use?

Am I the only person who feels ripped off by having to upgrade to lion so I can keep my "mobileme" account? My Mac is only 1 1/2 years old. I have now tried downloading lion for the 3rd time and have 72 hours devoted to trying to get the download completed. The 2nd ended with error [after 12 hours!].

Is it possible to configure Multitouch Gestures in SL/Leopard?
I know about the control panel but is it also possible to change certain gestures?
I don't use 3 Finger swipe for application switching and would like to change it to say "change spaces".

I have switched from pc to mac now for about 1.5 years and I LOVE mac! I'm still learning a ton but i was wondering if I should switch from running tiger and install leopard. I mainly use photoshop and final cut and had heard that there were some problems with running photoshop with leopard. not sure if that's true though. I would do an erase and install and start completely fresh.

I am getting sick OF SL screwing up and giving me beachballs, so I want to up/down-grade (however you see it) back to Leopard. Problem is I have Windows 7 installed via BootCamp with all my games, and I dont want to reinstall all that. If I reinstall Leopard, do I just install over SL or do I have to install on the whole hard drive and then reinstall Win7 and my games in Bootcamp?

My laptop has been having problems track pad doesn't always work, runs slow, freezes. I replaced the hard drive on advice and that didn't help. I went to disk utility and verify and repaired disk permissions, that didn't help. I went to the erase tab and I clicked on "erase free space" thinking that would "defragment" free space, like a PC has.Now all my available memory is gone.I thought I was freeing up space. Now my apps don't work correctly and I can't reinstall because I don't have enough disk space.

If I select from the menu bar another available wireless network (one without a password for example) and then switch back to my own wi-fi network, am I still safe?
Did the fact that I connected to another network present any risks?
I did not send any private info during that time, any risks of getting hacked?

Sometimes restarting is not enough: you need to power off your Mac, wait for a little, and power it on again. It could be a script which act like the "schedule" program in system preferences: it would switch off the Mac immediately, the add 1 minute to the current time and switch it on again.
