OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Unable To Burn To Blank DVD's
Mar 14, 2012I have a problem with my internal SuperDrive where it is saying that blank DVD's are not writable. When I insert a blank disk the Mac recognises it is a blank disc as the Blank DVD Options box appears but when I actually go to burn a disk the burn will start then immediately fail saying the disk isn't writable. From Disk Utility I get the following info from a blank disk: MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-85J:Firmware Revision:FEW7 Interconnect: [code] It doesn't matter what brand of disk I buy (have tried Verbatim, Bulkpaq, Sony, Tesco & Asda) I get the same issue. All these disks have then worked fine in my girlfriends PC (yuk!) laptop so I don't think it is the disks themselves that are at fault and the fact it is happening with different brands points to a problem with the drive rather than the disks. The drive seems to be working ok as it will play DVD's ok.

Feb 7, 2012In the last few days, when I hit a key to start up the computer, all I will get is a blank screen with the small, multi-colored, rotating disk icon. I can't get out of this unless I hold the power key down for about 5 seconds, which I know is probably not the right way to shut down.

I'm a newbie here but wonder if the above AppleInsider statement is true. I installed Snow Leopard over my existing Leopard w/out a hitch. Earlier OS X retail DVD versions clearly distinguished between "Install" and "Upgrade" - correct?. I'm confused where I read Snow Leopard required an existing OS (Leopard or Tiger) to install. It appears Snow Leopard is a "full install" DVD?

BTW, I've been trying to install Photoshop Elements and Adobe Creative Suite 3 Design Premium, which I know are compatible.Â

Mac Mini :: Won't Boot From Snow Leopard CD / Blank Screen With A Mouse Cursor
Nov 18, 2009I did some reading online, and know that the flashing question mark basically means that there's either a problem with the OS installation or the hard drive itself. I borrowed a friend's Snow Leopard installation CD (mine didn't come with the CD) to try to boot from it, but it refuses to boot from the CD.
The only keyboard bootup control that does anything so far as I can tell is the alt key (using a windows keyboard), which results a long delay while booting, followed by a blank screen with a mouse cursor. Everything else just ends up with the flashing question mark. If I try to hold C to boot from the CD, it sits there for 3-4 minutes with the occassional CD whirring sound, then ejects the CD and goes to the flashing question mark.

Feb 20, 2012I had a problem of my options in finder turning up as numbers and letters so I did some research and entered this code into the terminal: rm -rf ~/.MacOSX/environment.plist rm -rf ~/Library/Logs/swlog and now all files on my desktop and documents are gone and I am freaking out! I need all those docs back! What can I do to undo it?

Mar 24, 2012I am looking for calculator software that does data entry like a desktop calculator (not a handheld kind). For instance, on my Sharp EL-1801PIII, I can enter 78 x 7.75 % and then the + to add the amount I just came up with to the amount I started with and come up with a total amount. I don't have to put the first amount into memory or anything. Also, on my desktop calculator, I can enter a number and just hit the plus sign over and over if I have more than one of that number. On the handhelds and the software I've used, it requires a whole lot more keystrokes. Can anyone suggest something so I can get this calculator off my desk and free up some space? The calculator that comes with the OS operates like a handheld calculator. No bueno.

I have Snow Leopard, latest version.I had messed things up and somehow accidentally changed the color of the desktop to a light blue, from the darker background I had previously.Someone at Apple said to right click my mouse on the desktop and it would give me options to change the color. But nothing happens at all when I right click the mouse on the desktop. I get no options, and no menu. Same with left clicking the mouse on the desktop.

May 2, 2010I did the trick to let me drag my dashboard widgets onto my desktop with the "defaults write com.apple.dashboard devmode YES" script in terminal. typed it and hit enter and then it just prompted me for the next command so that is how i know it worked. I logged out then logged back in and then hit F12 and grabbed a widget and while still holding it with the mouse hit F12 again. this trick should have allowed me to have the widget on the desktop but nothing happened. does this not work of snow leopard? am i doing something wrong here?

Feb 28, 2012On my desktop I have 1 folder that contain completed projects as well as multiple folders to manage current projects I'm working on. Occassionally I also have files on the desktop that I am working on for the day. Whenever I arrange by name (or any other criteria) the files and folders on my desktop move all around. My completed folder is now mixed in with files I'm working on and my current projects folders are all over the placed depending on what I named them. I would like a way to pin certain folders to their place on the desktop (similar to how the hard drive icon is pinned), so when I arrange the desktop files by a certain criteria these "pinned" folders would not move.
