Is it possible to backup multiple computers to a single external drive connected to an Xserve using Time machine? We have a Six TB external drive that we are connecting to an Xserve that has three drives. We want to backup the entire

We have a Macbook and an iMac, both on Snow Leopard. Set them up on TC for backup several months ago, and they worked for a while. Then it stopped working for no obvious reason, with the message:Â
The network backup disk could not be accessed because there was a problem with the network username or password. Open Time Machine preferences to select the network backup disck and re-enter the correct username and password.Â
Of course userame and password were correct, because, first of all, they had not been changed, and second, because I could put in the wrong pw and it immediately would reject it. As it is, it takes it, counts down for 120 seconds, and then gives the above message.Â
Bought a new Macbook Pro, using Lion, and it works with the TC, seemingly proving that all settings on the TC are still good. Tried resetting TC. Tried the Cmd-Alt-p-r reboot, but neither worked.

I am using time machine to back up to a time capsule, two different macs (a laptop & a desktop). The time casule is connected to the network & the desktop backs up fine. The laptop did as well up until a few months ago, now the laptop fails each attempt to back up.Â
The problem may be temporary. Try again later to back up. If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk. Â
Latest successful backup: 11/16/11 at 10:24 PMÂ
I have tried to repair the laptop backup volume with no change. I do not really want to reformat the entire disk as it is working fine with the desktop.Â
I plan to 'clean up' my Time Machine/Time capsule completely, whereby I want to make it impossible for third parties to recover all or part of these old backups. After I have accompished this I want to start from scratch backing up my Mac.

I cannot seem to set up Time Machine using Time Capsule on my MacBook Pro. Evidently when I initially set up AirPort Extreme, I failed to select it as the backup disc.

I have a time capsule and a MacBook Air for the last number of months. Both had been working perfectly and even when my neighbour came over with his MacBook, we could quite easily network between the two computers and connect the two to the internet via the time capsule... Furthermore my MacBook air backed up regularly to the time capsule using time machine without a problem.
Problem. I got a new iMac and uploaded an imprint of my MacBook account and data onto it from the time capsule. I now cannot connect the two computers to the time capsule simultaneously, cannot network between them or cannot have both connected to the internet at the same time.. Furthermore, neither will back up to the time capsule using time machine. Very frustrating, because I know that it is something very simple causing this, but I am new enough to Mac and cannot resolve.
I was able to install Snow Leopard without any problems - but I can't do a Time Machine backup to my Time Capsule. The drive is not recognized and I get a "25299" error which refers to a problem with my keychain. I've gone into Keychain Utility and (several times) have deleted all the Time Capsule entries, but the problem keeps replicating itself. I was able to run backups earlier today and also reset the settings on the Time Capsule, so I'm sure it's not a problem with the drive.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am interested in using a Time Capsule to run Time Machine automatic backup for both computers in my house (Mac Mini and Macbook). Is this easy to setup for two computers? The manual says on page 1 that it can do multiple computers, but nowhere else in the manual to they mention how to set it up.
Congratulations on purchasing your Time Capsule. Read this guide to get started. The new Time Capsule offers you the simplicity of fully automated backup for your WiFi network. Using the Time Machine application in Mac OS X v10.5.2 Leopard or later, it's easy and automatic to back up all the computers on your network to a single Time Capsule.
I was thinking of the possibility of buying the Time Capsule from Apple and install on its hard drive Snow Leopard and then use it as the main drive of my imac 27 via wifi. Is this possible? If not, would it be possible if I bought an airport express? I would buy another external hard drive, install Snow Leopard on it and then connect it to the airport express. This way it would appear online, and on preferences I would select this drive to use as the main OS drive and then unmount the internal drive of the imac.

View 7 Replies View RelatedIt keeps saying you need a Time Capsule from '2008' to use this feature. I thought they were all from 2008+? So is this really saying it won't work with the first generation time capsule? The second generation being the one that added wideband support?
View 1 Replies View RelatedThe goal: To have all computers in the house use the same itunes library. Now the new ReadyNAS by NetGear has the option to put all the itunes music on there, and it shows up on the network as a shared library. Is there a way for multiple computers to share the same library on a external hard drive, or in this case, time capsule. I can see where a networked itunes library (like a shared computer) would work just fine for playing music, but you run into problems when say, you want to transfer songs to a ipod, iphone, etc.
One option would be for one of the computers be the main music server, and have that computer be the one to do the music transfers, but what if that computer is off. Multiple computers on same network, sharing same itunes library, but still able to manipulate the files?
I have 2 Macs in the house, with a 3rd coming soon. I backup mine to an external hard drive using Time Machine, but neither of the others have a backup plan in place.
One user doesn't really need a robust backup solution, but the person getting a mac soon does.
I was thinking I could kill two birds with one stone if I got a Time Capsule. Now I've read all about how you can partition Time Capsule and stuff like that (and I'm technical enough that I could probably pull that off if I wanted to, but I don't think I do). What I haven't found out is what the Time Capsule does if two users have been syncing to it, and on the next backup it runs out of space.
I've got a Macbook Pro with Snow Leopard installed, but it has been going sort of sluggish lately so I've decided to do a clean reinstall of Snow Leopard to try and improve things. I've got an up-to-date backup with Time Machine to my Time Capsule. When I do a clean install of Snow Leopard, will I be able to easily restore the files that I want to keep and the applications that I want to put back on my system (with their settings)?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been having trouble backing up my MacBook Pro to my Time Capsule (hasn't backed up in months) so I ran Disk Utility and it gave the following error: Disk Utility stopped verifying "Hard Disk". This disk needs to be repaired. Start up your computer with another disk (such as your Mac OS X installation disc), and then use Disk Utility to repair this disk. So, if I do that, will I end up losing whatever is on my hard disk? And how do I start up the computer using the OS X disk? Just put it in and restart?

View 2 Replies View RelatedThere are a gazillion Time Capsule threads and my question is probably answered in one of them. But I've been skimming them and can't find it. Also couldn't find it in the Apple support docs. So...Does anybody know how far back TC backups go? Does it just hold on to the latest backup or can you go back awhile to recover your files? For example, if a file was corrupted six months ago, will I be able to retrieve the prior uncorrupted version of it - or just the latest TC backup version of it (which would of course also be corrupted)?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have an external HDD hooked up to my iMac. It's from Freecom, and I believe it contains a Seagate ST310005 disk. I formatted the disk, and set up Time Machine. It seems to go well, TM makes the first back-up without any problems. But, even though TM is turned on and set to back things up, nothing I put on my PC after the initial back-up gets backed up. I put a folder on my desktop, put some files in it, and they are nowhere to be found in the TM back-ups.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI got a PowerMac 2.66 GHz Quad Core Intel Xenon with a 640GB HD. The system is 10.6.8. For some reason the Time Machine back up takes ages since a few weeks. I deleteted allready a few older ones and the free space on the back up disk is about 122GB. Today it copied about 700MB and it took over 30 minutes. I'm preatty sure this was a lot faster before. get it quicker again or what can be a reason that it is so slow.

I can't risk data storage in the clouds due to the possibility (however remote) that someone's personal info might get compromised. Nor can I risk the cloud being down and not being able to access files/date when needed (which can sometimes be at the strangest of times).I have several iMacs integrated wirelessly. Every time we (I) update a doc, it needs to be manually transferred to other computers for staff who will need it. That's no big deal. What is worrisome is if a recent version of a doc were to get corrupted due to a HD failure, a corruption on an iMac, or whatever else. We all have TM and Super Duper clones that are scheduled regularly. What I'd like to be able to do is simultaneously have docs backed up on an external in real time, as they are saved on an internal.Unless I'm missing something I can't find, it seems the only way to do this is to save to the HD, and then save to an external. That seems like a lot of manual redundancy, and invites forgetfulness. So all being said, is there an Apple Script out there anyone is aware of that would tell the iMac to automatically save a copy of every file that is modified to an external, so that the external is a "current" version of the internal for data retrieval purposes?

View 2 Replies View RelatedYesterday was a most joyous day for me as I got my new mac, a 15.4" MacBook Pro, I also bought a 500GB Time Capsule with it to keep everything backed up. Once I set the Time Capsule I went through all the set up stuff and the wireless network works fine as does the wireless printing. But as you can guess from the title of this thread the Time Capsule wont back up. It gives the following message when I try and get it to back up "Time Machine Error: The backup disk image could not be created."
I've tried reseting the Time Capsule, Tried all the different settings, Looked on the Apple website and it still isn't working.
Now that the new hard drive is installed, I've connected the MacBook to the Time Capsule, but it's not finding the October back up (or any back up). I'm worried that I have lost all of my pictures and music.
Before I lost the hard drive, I was running snow leopard. Now, I have only installed leopard so far. I left my snow leopard disk at work and have not had a chance to grab it. Maybe the different OS has something to do with this...
Just invested in a TC as my MBP had to go in for repair. Got it all set up and backed up, and was working great.
However, having got the MBP back with new logic board, its stopped working.
Backups just fail, and if I open Time Machine, it doesn't see the back ups made before the MBP went for repair.
The Time Capsule shows up in the finder OK, as being connected, and with the .sparsebundle file visible. It also shows up in Airtport Utility OK.
Im new to the Mac OS having just purchased my Macbook Pro 13 2.53 a few weeks ago. Im learning my way around and trying to figure out how to eventually switch everything over to the laptop. Currently, I use Mozy to back up my PC and all my files. It has worked well over the last few years and saved me a few times after hard drive crashes.
I need a new router so I like the idea of getting a time capsule and adding in an on site back up to my set up. I also want to use it as an archive of old photos and videos so that I dont have to fill up the hard drive on the lap top.
My question is: Can I just have Mozy back up the contents of time capsule thereby backing up time machine back up content and what ever other files I have stored on the time capsule hard drive. This way, if the time capsule hard drive dies, I can get a new one, and restore from Mozy. I understand the danger of backing up a back up. I just want to know if it will work and if anyone is doing this.I know mozy supports networked drives. I asked their customer support if this set up would work and they were evasive.
