Hardware :: Multiple Computers Share ITunes Library In Time Capsule?

Jan 31, 2008

The goal: To have all computers in the house use the same itunes library. Now the new ReadyNAS by NetGear has the option to put all the itunes music on there, and it shows up on the network as a shared library. Is there a way for multiple computers to share the same library on a external hard drive, or in this case, time capsule. I can see where a networked itunes library (like a shared computer) would work just fine for playing music, but you run into problems when say, you want to transfer songs to a ipod, iphone, etc.

One option would be for one of the computers be the main music server, and have that computer be the one to do the music transfers, but what if that computer is off. Multiple computers on same network, sharing same itunes library, but still able to manipulate the files?

Hardware :: Time Capsule With Multiple Computers - Backup Priority Details?

Jun 1, 2010

I have 2 Macs in the house, with a 3rd coming soon. I backup mine to an external hard drive using Time Machine, but neither of the others have a backup plan in place.

One user doesn't really need a robust backup solution, but the person getting a mac soon does.

I was thinking I could kill two birds with one stone if I got a Time Capsule. Now I've read all about how you can partition Time Capsule and stuff like that (and I'm technical enough that I could probably pull that off if I wanted to, but I don't think I do). What I haven't found out is what the Time Capsule does if two users have been syncing to it, and on the next backup it runs out of space.

OS X :: One ITunes Library Access On Multiple Computers

Nov 18, 2009

Okay so here's my setup:
IPhone
MacBook Pro (10.6.2)
Mac mini (10.6.2)
Airport Extreme with a USB Hard Drive

I would like to set up one ITunes Library so both of my computers can access it. Furthermore I would like to be able connect my IPhone to any of the computers in the house and sync my music, podcasts and applications as normal. Here's what I've tried so far (which worked with my music, but didn't work with podcasts and IPhone application, etc).

1. Copied all the music to my Mac mini.
2. Opened iTunes Preferences and pointed my library to the 'Music' my NAS drive.
3. Went to File > Library > Organise > Consolidate Library.
Now my NAS iTunes library has all my music, but has no library file or XML file in it. Plus if I add ratings to any of my music, the information is not transferred over to my other computer.

I currently have a external hard drive on my wireless network and when I point two computers to the itunes library on that hard drive at the same time the second computer says the library is locked or I don't have permission to access the file. If I close the library on the first computer I can access the library just fine on the second.

OS X :: ITunes Library On Time Capsule Not Working

Jun 27, 2009

I know this is covered quite well both here and over at Apple discussions but I just cannot get this damn thing to work. I've been at it since 9am and it is now nearly 1pm. I spent 10 hours yesterday copying my iTunes Library over to my Time Capsule and planned to finish the job this morning by telling iTunes where to find the new library etc. Everything is in the right place and I've followed instructions from various threads from various locations but when I log out, log back in and attempt to open iTunes it can't find the library. Can some one list the 'correct' steps I need to take to get this thing to work. Even Apple's instructions don't work but they only refer to a HD not a network drive.

So far I transfered the entire iTunes folder to the TC and told iTunes where it is. Then I read I only need to copy the iTunes Music folder (not the entire iTunes folder). Either way I still get the same 'wheres the library?' problem. I also read I need to place an alias in the iTunes Music folder on my mac that points to the actual ITM folder on the TC. Still doesn't work. I keep swapping the extra bits and pieces alongside the ITM folder i.e. all the xml files and artwork folders between the mac and the TC but the problem still remains wherever these reside and each 'swap' takes nearly 15 minutes. I am also attempting to set this up so I can access the library on the TC from 2 accounts on the same Mac. Not sure if that will make a difference to settings just yet?

OS X :: Itunes Library On HD & TC - Time Capsule Media Files

Oct 21, 2010

I've been trying vigorously to connect my itunes library with my Time Capsule Media files. So that I can keep the music I acually listen to on my Macbrook Pro's harddrive but have the rest of my music stored onto my time capsule and listen to when I am at home. What I thought to do was put the music i listen to in the itunes library folder on the harddrive and then change the media location to the TC media file folder.Turns out my idea was wrong.. any others care to elaborate on this issue? I'm pretty much confused with this and i haven't been able to find it on the forums anywhere

Hardware :: ITunes Library Saved To Time Capsule?

Dec 1, 2010

Recently I purchased a 1TB Time Capsule. I have it downstairs, plugged into my modem and it's working as my wireless router as well as external HD, I also have an Airport Express plugged in upstairs, set up in bridge mode to extend my network so I get strong coverage everywhere in the house. Now my collection of around 3500 mp3's are currently stored on my unibody 13" Macbook, but I want to know if it's possible to save all of my music - and any other content I download straight to my TC, and then run iTunes as normal.

Just using the TC as the source rather than a file on the HD in my Macbook? Just trying to free up some space is all. Will I be hearing glitchy playback if it is possible? Is it simply a case of finding my iTunes library, cmd+A, copy all files to TC, delete original files off HD and then resetting the file location under iTunes preferences? I don't want to try this yet until I'm told I can in case I screw up and lose my library.

Applications :: Storing ITunes Library On Time Capsule?

Feb 4, 2009

I've got a time capsule setup and I'm trying to keep my iTunes library on the time capsule drive to keep my MacBook hard drive free. I keep pointing the file path in settings to the library file on the time capsule but it will randomly fall back to the default location on my hard drive with no warning. Is there anyway I can make sure it STAYS pointed to the time capsule? It's a pain to have all my songs come up with "!" and have to go and fix the path in settings again and watch it "update" everything and reorder the files and then work fine again.

The time capsule is hosting my internet network so the second I step into my house I connect to that network so I would think iTunes never has to search for it and not find it for some reason. However, I would also like to have iTunes setup to see my library on time capsule when I'm out in the wild and talking to it over the internet. I haven't set up time capsule yet to be seen over the internet but I plan to do that tonight, I'm just wondering if I'll have to change the iTunes path every couple days back to my remote drive instead of it's default path.

ITunes For Mac :: Moving External HD Library To Time Capsule

Sep 9, 2014

I have an iTunes library of approx. 60GB that is currently stored on an external hd connected via USB to a mac mini. I access this music library via other devices such as ipad, iphone bose soundtouch. Currently the iTunes library is only accessible from the other devices if the mac mini is awake and functioning.

I am therefore considering moving the external hd USB connection from the mac mini to my time capsule which provides the network in my home. I assume that this will provide me with an always on music library rather than one which is dependent on the mac mini. Firstly is this assumption correct or will I still need to have the mac mini awake and iTunes open on it in order to access the iTunes library from an iphone for example?

If my assumption is correct, what steps do I need to go through to relocate the hd from the mac mini to the time capsule and still be able to play music?

Applications :: Sharing ITunes Library With Time Capsule (Configurations)

I have a 500GB time capsule that I sue to host my iTunes music and library. I pointed iTunes to the TC folder where the music is. Then I did control+click on the iTunes icon and pointed iTunes to the library which is also located at the TC. As long as I don't restart the computer it works fine, I can open and close iTunes and it finds the library ok. But every time I restart the computer I have to tell iTunes where the library is. Is there any way to configure iTunes so it does not "forget" the library's location?

OS X :: Time Capsule Won't Allow Two Computers To Connect?

Feb 3, 2009

I have a time capsule and a MacBook Air for the last number of months. Both had been working perfectly and even when my neighbour came over with his MacBook, we could quite easily network between the two computers and connect the two to the internet via the time capsule... Furthermore my MacBook air backed up regularly to the time capsule using time machine without a problem.

Problem. I got a new iMac and uploaded an imprint of my MacBook account and data onto it from the time capsule. I now cannot connect the two computers to the time capsule simultaneously, cannot network between them or cannot have both connected to the internet at the same time.. Furthermore, neither will back up to the time capsule using time machine. Very frustrating, because I know that it is something very simple causing this, but I am new enough to Mac and cannot resolve.

Hardware :: How To Setup Time Capsule To Backup Two Computers

I am interested in using a Time Capsule to run Time Machine automatic backup for both computers in my house (Mac Mini and Macbook). Is this easy to setup for two computers? The manual says on page 1 that it can do multiple computers, but nowhere else in the manual to they mention how to set it up.

Congratulations on purchasing your Time Capsule. Read this guide to get started. The new Time Capsule offers you the simplicity of fully automated backup for your WiFi network. Using the Time Machine application in Mac OS X v10.5.2 Leopard or later, it's easy and automatic to back up all the computers on your network to a single Time Capsule.

First off, I have an iBook G4 with Leopard, and an iMac Intel that I just recently upgraded to Leopard. I have used my external drive to previously backup my iBook with Time Machine. I would like to start backing up my iMac too, with the same drive. Would this present a conflict as far as the multiple backups from different systems on the same drive? Obviuosly space would be an issue in the long run...250GB drive, devoted only to backups. Also, if/when I utilize Boot Camp on my iMac, will the Windows partition backup through Time Machine?

OS X Server V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Time Capsule Backup Works On One, But Not All Computers?

May 13, 2012

We have a Macbook and an iMac, both on Snow Leopard. Set them up on TC for backup several months ago, and they worked for a while. Then it stopped working for no obvious reason, with the message:

The network backup disk could not be accessed because there was a problem with the network username or password. Open Time Machine preferences to select the network backup disck and re-enter the correct username and password.

Of course userame and password were correct, because, first of all, they had not been changed, and second, because I could put in the wrong pw and it immediately would reject it. As it is, it takes it, counts down for 120 seconds, and then gives the above message.

Bought a new Macbook Pro, using Lion, and it works with the TC, seemingly proving that all settings on the TC are still good. Tried resetting TC. Tried the Cmd-Alt-p-r reboot, but neither worked.

Applications :: ITunes Multiple Downloads For All Computers?

Dec 24, 2010

I have 4 computers linked to my Apple ID and numerous IPhones and IPods. Correct me if I'm wrong, but when I purchase a song, and successfully download it, using my computer. The only way to get it to the other computers is by transferring it via my IPhone or IPods. It seems as if I've downloaded something once from Apple, then they don't let me download it again onto a registered machine using the same Apple ID. Therefore, I transfer music/app content using my devices. Isn't this what everyone does?

Now, Mac app store is coming! How the heck am I going to download content onto one computer and then transfer it to another computer (Apple says the 1 time purchase will be good for all your computers). Do you think Apple will allow multiple downloads of the same software to any computer associated with you Apple ID? If this is the case: Why not allow us to do the same thing with our ITunes purchases? Anyone care to chime in and letting me know if I'm off base, or have any suggestions, etc.?

Hardware :: Share Time Capsule's Own 1TB Hard Drive

Aug 2, 2010

It has taken me a little bit to understand how this Time Capsule works. I don't mean the easy Time Machine, backup-only part. I mean that ideally, I'd like to repartition the 1TB hard drive that's inside of it and I'd also like to change the partition style from Apple's old(er) AFP which is mainly used in the PowerPC-based Mac's, to GUID, the current "default" style that every Intel-based Mac uses. Using the AirPort utility that came with the Time Capsule, I did configure every last part of the TC, including the hard drive sharing part, which I protected with a "disk password", one of the three choices given by the Manual Setup Guide. What I apparently can't wrap my mind around just yet is as to where exactly do I enter this password? How do I access the drive from a computer on the network? I apologize if some of these questions seem a bit n00b'ish, but I am officially still new to Mac's and I am most certainly brand new(!) to this Time Capsule! lol...I do love it, though. Some of the config settings are indeed very well thought out.
