OS X Mavericks :: Finding And Deleting Hidden Users
Jul 2, 2014A few weeks ago I upgraded to 10.9.3, enabled keys function, etc. Since then, I've been having major issues with my computer - there seems to be a hidden user who changes permissions. I get error messages at times saying files are being used by another user or I don't have permission to view some folders under Documents or Library//Application Support that I routinely use.Â
In Terminal I ran whois on some of the hidden folders this user has on my computer and was able to see various .com / .net addresses associated with the files, which I ran who's to learn more about.Â
Net / net, I need a command line in Terminal to list hidden users and then delete them. BTW, I've spoken with tech support for hours yesterday and we even erased my hard drive, reinstalled OS X and the hidden users are still there. We've identified it's not a problem with our carrier. things are routinely in my Trash, such as music files I never deleted and other misc. files that even after I Secure Empty Trash, show up again (random plist files, keys, etc.). Hardware Overview:OX XVersion 10.9.3 (13D65)2.4 GHz Intel Core i7Memory 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
OS X Server V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Cannot Edit Users In Workgroup Manager, New Users Cannot Login
Feb 13, 2012Today when we started trying to add users to our server (we use it only for afp access at this time), we noticed that new users belonging to a group "storage" were unable to login from client machines via afp (clients both 10.7.2 and 10.6.8). Â
When we tried editing the users accounts to change which groups they belonged to, it would appear in workgroup (and server preferences) that the changes would take but there was still no access.Â
As a test case, we modified an existing user who had no issues logging in to belong to a diffenent group and have different sharepoint access. The changes looked good in workgroup and server prefs, but when the user logged in, he was only able to acces his old sharepoint and not the new one (and since his permissions to the old were removed, he shouldn't have access to that sharepoint).Â
Also, for some reason users cannot be deleted within workgroup manager any more. The login used was the diradmin account.

May 27, 2012I've recently acquired an iMac and wanted to upgrade to Lion, however I believe I need to upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard first - which could prove to end up costing a fortune! I've read recently that Apple are offering the upgrade to Snow Leopard free of charge for MobileMe users, however when I've followed a link to fill in a request form, this just takes me to the Find My Phone feature on iCloud.Â

MacBook Pro :: What Video Format (including Embedded Audio) Can Be Viewed By Both OSX Lion Users And PC Users
Mar 22, 2012I am currently am MBA student and must create projects using power point/ keynote, very often. Many of the power points/ keynotes created by students are informative but lack the ability to hold an audience’s attention (boring). Since I have this wonderful Macbook pro, I would like to create a dynamic keynote presentation which would include clips of audio and video files (I already know about converting keynote to power point). The only problem is, the videos I want to use in the keynote presentation are not able to be manipulated in iMovie (due to their format), and if they where able to be manipulated in iMovie, I’m not sure that PC users would be able to properly view them.
What video format (including embedded audio) is able to be viewed and heard by both OSX Lion users and Windows users?  If this is possible, can anyone suggest a safe application that I can purchase from the apple app store that will allow me to convert video files (including embedded audio) so that it can be viewed by both Lion and PC users? Preferably one that does not need access to the internet in order to convert the files ( I’m on the go allot and use an air card for internet access), but I will take it if this is the best option. If the app store does not have this type of application, is there a place that I can download a safe one?Â

Then removing the user, along with resetting the local.nidb, removing the .AppleSetupDone file, and rm the user folder that I used, through single-user mode.

Software :: Home Vs Users Directories Under Leopard
Jun 24, 2008I was using until recently a PowerPC running Mac OS X 10.4.11. Since I maintain my directories synchronized all the time between Linux running on another machine and this PowerPC, I created a link: /home -> /Users so that all my scrpits and links (like /home/....) would work properly under both systems. I acquired recently an iMac running under Mac OS 10.5.3 and discovered that there exists already a directory called "/home" which has a rather strange behaviour: not even the user 'root' is allowed to write into it or to modify it in any way, orv to remove it! This breaks many of my scripts.
Of course I can go the opposite way and create under my Linux a link: /Users->/home, but some of my scripts create automatically links like "/home/..." because they expand "~/..." and these would give me troubles on the iMac. I wrote a script which goes through my directory and changes all my links, but it does not seem to be the right way.

Mar 29, 2012My dad has a problem with the force-shutdown operation in that when prompted for an admin account's credentials, it does not recognise/accept his credentials, even 'tho they are correct. It also doesn't accept my credentials. Like the account my dad is using, I am also an admin user. To get around this problem, we have to log out the user who is logged in and then shutdown.Â

Feb 11, 2012I'm trying to fill out a downloaded application which is in pdf format. I can type text onto the form in Preview, however, the text types as though it's right justified. That is: when I type the text, the text appears to the left of the cursor. To clarify, the cursor stays in the same place and the text moves to the left, for example, when I place the cursor to the right of "Name", the text I type in appears to the left of the cursor on top of the word "Name". For fields such as Name and Date, I suppose I can just put the cursor far to the right and type my text, but this is an application that includes an essay portion. Typing a paragraph with all of the text going to the left of the cursor isn't going to work very well. Is there a way to change the way the text is added, so that it's added in a more normal way, like the way I'm typing this question, where the letters appear where the cursor is and the cursor moves to the right as you add more text? Â
I have also tried doing this in Text Edit and Pages (I converted the pdf in Text Edit to rtf), but I wasn't able to fill out the document as needed. In addition, importing the document to Pages and Text Edit, for some reason, only imported the first page of the document). I am using OS 10.6.8

Sep 1, 2009This is a neat one. I found out last night that I cannot restart or shut down either of my Macs if my wife's account is still logged in. In order to perform either function, I have to log onto my wife's account and log it out before it will allow me to either restart or power down the computer.
If I try to do so while both accounts are logged in, I will get the usual prompt for an Admin name and password, but then it just won't go past that screen. The prompt just keeps coming up to enter the Admin info. Anyone else experiencing this, or have any recommendations?
I did an update install on both machines. I updated our iMac with a full retail copy, and the MBP I updated with an UTD disc. Perhaps doing a full erase and install is the answer? Or do you guys think it's just something buggy in SL?

Apr 23, 2012I am using Image Capture 4.0 to download photos. When I plug in my storage device (camera, SD card, USB stick, etc.) Image Capture opens and along with the option to select the download folder, all the names of the folders (grayed out) I have used since I first started using the computer appear. These are folders I no longer use, but to get to the actual area or folder that I want to download to, I have to scroll past a couple hunderd previous, grayed out folder names. Once I get to the actual desired folder, I can download to it. But, those annoying, old folder names still appear on the hard drive.

Jun 2, 2012When I add my new Iomega Helium USB HD to my Macbook Pro running 10.6.8, the screen and keyboard all freeze. There laptop has to be rebooted. It does this when I do it standalone and when I use external screen, keyboard and hub. It is a problem with my setup because the drive works fine will all of the other Windows and Mac machines I have.
The cause was the installation of the Iomega software (why did I ever trust Iomega software?) as I only installed it on my macbook pro.Can I run some diagnostics/debug to trace the insertion of the USB device to see where it is going wrong? I have manually uninstalled the software but I am convinced I have missed something.I have a complete clone backup from before the installation but don't want to lose other changes (like email etc) since that day, although I am happy to restore specific files.

Is there a way, manually or automatically, to delete all the ones I don't need? I've done a search, and a couple of places (possibly outdated) have pointed me to Library > Printers, and that all the printer drivers should be there. When I do that, I only see the application for my own printer.............

Apr 11, 2010I know by default that Snow Leopard starts up in 32-bit kernel but anyone here boot into the 64-bit kernel? I think to do this you'd have to hold down 6 and 4 keys while booting.
By now almost all 3rd party apps are running 64-bit and all this time I've totally forgot about the 64-bit kernel!
I've just booted up to 64-bit kernel and all apps load instantaneously!

Jun 14, 2012I am having to manually re-add all the .ics files to each users shared calendar through iCal. I want to generate a list of users and their GUID's and I think dscl is the right tool. I don't have great bash skills nor can I get dscl to jump through hoops. I can get individual GUID's for a user using # dscl /LDAPv3/127.0.0.1/ -read /Search/Users/username but waht I would like to do is generate a list of all the users and their GUIDS ?how I can do that?Â
