OS X :: Strange Rename Files Bug?

Dec 11, 2010

I've noticed for a few months now both in 10.5 on my PowerMac and 10.6 on my MBP that often when I click to rename a file in the finder, it will a few seconds later "un-select" the renaming as if I had hit return to finish renaming the file. I then have to click it again to finish renaming the file. Sometimes, it will do this 2-3 times before it quits exiting on its own. I wonder if Spotlight could be interfering sometimes because it often seems to do it when the window is first open and OSX is in the middle of updating the little icons to show video snapshots and the like. But I've also seen it happen after they're all updated as well. I don't recall seeing this problem on either Mac more than say 6 months ago or so. It certainly never used to do it as I've had the MBP for over 2 years now and the PowerMac for around 4 years and I would have noticed. I wonder if one of the system updates might have changed something, for example.

Has anyone else noticed any issues with renaming files being unselected like that in the middle of typing?

OS X :: Mac Won't Let Me Rename Files?

Mar 12, 2010

Trying to rename a couple files in finder. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I can click on the file to bring up the cursor, and the name gets highlighted. Once I start typing however, it just takes whatever I have typed and closes the cursor edit box and I have to start all over again.

It's like I have a 2 second window to rename a file. Even if I click and the cursor comes up, if I don't type anything and watch it the cursor disappears after 2-5 seconds.

OS X :: Trying To Rename Files On Uni. Macbook?

Aug 21, 2009

I have searched around and have not been able to find an answer to my problem. I am having a very tough time trying to rename files/ folders on my late 2008 Unibody MB. This has always happened with this computer since the day I purchased it. When I am trying to rename a file or folder, I hit the return key so I can edit the name on the file. I then try to either backspace or click and drag the selected text that I want to delete. 9 out of 10 times it stops me from doing it mid deleting or adding text. It's like someone it pressing the return key as I am in the middle of editing the text. I am sure I am not pressing the trackpad or enter key accidentally. This is really getting on my nerves and I am about to throw this computer at a wall if I cannot get this fixed.

It's always allows me a different amount of time to edit before it saves it automatically. I am trying to rename over 1000 files on external/ internal hard drives so I can get the correct name for movies in plex/ iphoto. I know I can go into Get Info and edit the name in there, but that would take forever renaming a thousand files. It literally takes me 5 to 10 times just to rename one file. Can anyone tell me what might be causing this problem? I have also tried using the Apple BT keyboard and have the exact same results.
Also completely random question, is there a way to disable the IR port on the MB so when I am controlling the Mac Min HTPC it doesn't keep messing with the MB by bringing up Frontrow, pausing/playing tracks? I literally have to cover the IR port with my finger just so I can use the remote on the mini.

OS X :: How To Batch Rename Files With A Random Name

I have a digital photo frame to see my pictures, but it only plays photos secuencially, it can't be set on "shuffle". So if I could rename the photos with random names, then the effect would be the same, as I would be seeing them in "shuffle".

I know automator can rename files, and there are many many apps that also rename, but I haven't found one that can give the files a random name!

OS X :: Use Automater To Rename Multiple Files?

The problem is that when I right-click my files or hit "control" and click the files I want to use I don't get an option that says "more" (see second picture of tutorial) so I can get the files into Automator. In place of "more" at the bottom of the Contextual menu I have an option that says "Set Desktop Picture". How can I get my files into Automator??

OS X :: Any Way To Rename Multiple Music Files

May 18, 2010

I have about 60 gigs of music. Each file is named "artistname - song name". How can I take the artist name out of all of them without timing my clicking to rename them. Also, I found that quite a few cds are actually named like "artist.name.song.name" for some reason. Now windows lets me push the tab key and will let me keep going without using the mouse which is way less time consuming. Is there a way I can do that on a Mac? Will automator work for what I am doing?

I have easily changed the name of the files, but notice when I click and select more info they still have the old, incorrect names (which will show up in the scrolling data on my stereo).

I can't for the life of me figure out how to change the "title" information so that it mirrors the name of the mp3.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Batch Rename Of Avi Files?

Apr 15, 2012

I am looking for the solution to batch rename multiple avi files simply. In iphoto, I just select a bunch of image files and using the ctrl+Shift+CMD keyboard shortcut, I input the name something like 'boat_trip_kids' I get the files renamed instantly wiith or without the suffix of a number.Thing is,  how to do for vdo files ?I read a totorial and then tried using automator to do this but I have to input the name_of_the_file in the script construction. That's ok for hundreds of files but I will have many names to use for naming of small groups of files and this won't be practical. Is there some way I can achieve this in automator?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Strange System Files Showing Up Everywhere?

Mar 26, 2012

Roughly two weeks ago I started noticing all kinds of unfamiliar system files showing up in a number of my folders. They are always grayed out and as far as I know have nothing to do with the actual folder. These are just straight forward folders and/or my actual Mac hard drive. Any idea where they may be coming from? I don't know that any of them are actual system files that might be important. The second link, the CODES folder should be the only file in that folder. Here are links to a couple of them. [URL]..

OS X Technologies :: Using AppleScript To Rename Files By Folder Hierarchy

Mar 13, 2012

I have thousands of music projects with a somewhat fixed folder hierarchy and I'm trying to first rename and then extract (move) certain files from their original location.

Here is the most common example of the hierarchy: ProjectName/Info/Setups/fixed name file (either a pdf, txt or jpg)

My goal is to have these files renamed after their parent folders, all the way up to the Project Name and then have them moved to a set folder, out of this dull dictatorship I've created, so my files would end up with a name like this:  ProjectName - Info - Setups - fixed name file

I have run the Disk Utility to repair permissions but with no improvement.
