When I open my USB flash drive on my mac (snow leopard), all the files are expanded, and I can't figure out why. Then I have to go one by one closing them, and it's frustrating. Is there a way to set it to be collasped or expanded?

I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard and found that a function I used to use isn't available anymore, but not sure if I just need to configure it or something.
What I'd like to be able to do is when I drag a file over an external hard drive disk image, I like for that to open so I can choose the sub-directory where I'd like to place the file. How can I set up 10.6.x to allow me to do this?
It is very tiring and time consuming to set permissions to a folder and then doing the same all the way down to the last subfolder.
Does anyone know of a way to do it all at once?
I'm dealing with a crazy annoyance after upgrading to Snow Leopard - currently running 10.6.2. I have 2 duplicate, external, 1TB WestDig Drives. I have no problems accessing files from the Finder, but if I use Spotlight search or Smart Folders, the corresponding folders on the external drives never open on the first try. I always receive the message: The alias ??? can?t be opened because the original item can?t be found.
On the second try the folder opens fine. It seems that after my Snow Leopard upgrade every spotlight search on the external drive reveals "missing" folder aliases although the "aliases" appear as regular folder icons. I tried re-indexing spotlight but this did not solve the problem. External Drive volume in terminal:

I just installed a new harddrive and I made 2 partitions. One for my system, preferences and installed programs and one for my files.
The problem comes when i put things on my desktop or download stuff. These folders are on my system partition and when i download or save to the desktop temporarely, i have to copy the files later to my other partition and delete the original.
It would save me a lot of time if downloaded files and files saved to the desktop are written on my documents partition.
hence the question: is there any way to change your desktop and downloads folder location to another location/drive?
I use Comic Book Lover to read digital comics - these are .cbr and .cbz files, which are comic rar and zip archives, respectively. Pre-Snow Leopard, these were recognised by Comic Book Lover as Comic Book Lover files, complete with custom icons, icon previews, etc. I also use .rar and .zip files for archiving. When I installed Snow Leopard, it read all .cbr files as .rar files for Stuffit Expander, and .cbz as .zip files. I actually use UnRarX for rar file management, so using the Get Info box I changed all .rar files to use UnRarX, .cbr and .cbz to use Comic Book Lover, and .zip to use the standard Archive Utility.
Problem is Snow Leopard is not distinguishing between .rar and .zip and .cbr and .cbz. Once I've changed all .cbr and .cbz files to open with Comic Book Lover, all .rar and .zip files also get changed! Likewise if I set all .rar files to be opened with UnRarX, this changes all .cbr files! Clearly Snow Leopard is handling file types in a new way. Is there anyway around this, or am I going to have to pick one file type affiliation that would be most useful (say .cbr and .cbz opened with Comic Book Lover), and live with having to right-click on a .rar or .zip file to say "Open with..." UnRarX or Archive Utility?
I recently installed Snow Leopard (10.6.4) on my MacBook. I just installed macport and I was trying to install emacs (23.2) with it. the installation proceeds without errors, but when I try to launch the program I get the following error message: "emacs: Cannot open termcap database file".

When I drag-and-hold a file to a folder with the purpose of placing it into one of its subfolders, I can't go past the first folder: in other words, unlike Mavericks, where I could drag the file and open one folder after the other until I could just release my file into the final destination, since I installed Yosemite I can't do it any longer and when I place the dragged file over a subfolder all I see is a "+" sign, but the folder won't open. Is there a way to restore that functionality?Â

I need to pull the names of the application/developers from somewhere so I figured I would use the Application Support directory.Â
So I need a way to copy this directories folder structure without any of the file contents. Is there an easy way to do this. I found a post with an Automator script but the link is dead [URL]
I also found this post that refers to doing it in terminal but since it is the app support directory I am wary to do this as I am not familiar with terminal at all and I am not clear on what exactly to write in the old_dir / new_dir section. I figure it would be something like this /Library/Application Support but I dont want to make a mistake.Â

In mail, i can only save to Downloads or a folder on the same level. It won't let me choose a subfolder or create a folder like i could before. Same thing when i try to save a file. When i'm using Adobe CS3 applications i swich to the adobe dialog boxes but this seems so stupid.
This is a HUGE time waster for me. I deal with a projects that involve a great quantity of files that need a lot of folder organization. Is this something to do with stacks? Am i being required to think differently?
I launched Mail as I ordinarily do. It opened up, but the header bar was grayed out. Finally I managed to open program via Message/Go To/ Inbox, but no messages appeared in any of my mailboxes (even though I had several still in there from today). Nothing is happening, I even can't quit teh mail program.

I have different files in various folders and subfolders that I wish to rename.So I need automator to search for files in all folders and subfolders of my external drive and find all files ending in .doc. Then I need each file to be renamed as "report.doc". (There is only one file per subfolder so there is no danger of having two files with the same name.)

When I click on applications and then for example click on my music folder, it all opens up in a preview and then if i select another folder in my music folder that opens up like a preview as well. Under Leopard, I could right-click on the desktop and select one of my workflows from the menu under Automator. Now, there is no ~/Library/Workflows folder in Snow Leopard and Automator doesn't have the Save as plugin option anymore. Does anyone know how to use automator scripts in Snow Leopard that doesn't involve opening Automator every time?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI've had this problem since I upgraded to SL and I'm finally looking for a solution, as it's mildly annoying So anytime I'm opening up a file browser window within an app - say, to upload or save a file in Firefox, or to open a file in any old program - I used to be able to navigate to a folder on my keyboard by typing the first letter or two of the name. Now, however, when I try to do that, nothing happens except the Mac makes that dull "thud" sound. Now, if I navigate inside a folder (by pressing the right arrow key) and then go back out (press the left arrow key), then it works like a charm. But what a pain!
