I am looking to replace a Apple Base Station router that has seemingly been fried by lightening.
Are there other, less expensive options out there that are plug-n-play with PPC Macs?
Also, can anybody recommend a good quality ethernet surge suppressor for a router?

I really want to ditch this PC laptop and dive headfirst into the mac world. I've been flip flopping between wanting a macbook/macbook pro/powerbook for a while now and I'm getting seriously feed up with myself. The problem is that i cant really justify spending upwards of $1000 for a new computer when my current one works fairly well (for windows). So I think an old school powerbook might be the answer I'm looking for. I've seen them go for $300-400 on ebay and just want a confirmation that this will be fast enough. I only plan to use it for internet, music, the iLife package type things, no games, no photoshop. But I want to make sure that it'll do these good enough to leave me with a good impression of OSX.

On it, I was able to set a phrase that whispered "Sharina, you are now running on reserve battery power." I absolutely loved it and it always freaked people out. I have read that other people were setting custom phrases like this as well.I was wondering if my brand spanking shiny new Macbook Pro i7 purchased in last month can do the same thing.. New macbook is Snow Leopard while old powerbook was probably Tiger.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI know it's a strange questions but my mother's powerbook G4 1.5ghz just suffered from the infamous lower ram slot failure and does not fall within the warranty extension program. However, she has VISA performance guarantee and if the repair is going to cost too much, they will most likely offer to replace the computer with a new equivalent one.
This particular issue, apparently, is not really fixable and people who have their logic boards replaced often experience the same problem again later down the road. Since VISA has a no lemon policy and will replace automatically after three repairs, I figure it's better to save my mother the considerable hassle of having to send it in on multiple occasions...
So: I'm I want to find the most expensive authorized apple repair shop. Any 'good' suggestions?
The guy said its a Powerbook but I haven't been able to find anything on Powerbooks having black keyboards...any ideas?

I know most of you are going to jump on me and ask "why?" instead of focusing on my question, so the reason is this; I would like to have a simul cast of the wireless network for G and N. some of you already know if you have a G device on an N network, the N drops down to G speeds. we have some old laptops and iphones that don't have N but we also have a ps3 and some N macbooks. How do I get all 3 routers on the same "network"? i've managed to get all computers wired and non on the internet, but i cant get them to find each other. for example my iphone cant use apple remote on itunes because my n macbook is on the N router. so they won't "see" each other
The current config is this:
dlink router(wireless turned off) -belkin N+ router [macbook,ps3,imac etc]
-linksys g routr(dd-wrt firm) [iphones,laptop,repeater] -winblows xp box
The Ethernet cables for the 2 attached routers go to their wan ports. I've tried disabling the DHCP servers on the belkin and linksys' but still nothing.
My wireless used to work throughout my whole apartment. It's a small one bedroom...then one day it only worked while I was in the room with the router close to my router. This also happens at my parent's house, my boyfriend's house, at coffee shops etc....everyone elses computer gets access just fine but mine cannot even see the access point. Any one have any idea what happened or how to fix it?

Stable fast wireless for gaming and large file transferes, and wireless transfere of data to ps3 as media center. Ability to add one or more USB harddrives and printer able to read and write data from the USB harddrives and printer, both from a mac and pc. Is there anything better than the airport extreme, and what problems do you encounter when using it.

View 24 Replies View RelatedI connect to a wireless router in work and at home, for home i just set the setting through firefox to connect "auto-detect proxy settings for this network" and it works fine, but in work, this does not work, i have to set it to "Manual proxy configuration" with an ip address the it department give me. What i would like to know are 2 things:
1) Am i doing the right thing my changing the settings in Firefox, or should these setting be configured outside of the browser?
2) How can i set this up, so i don't have to keep changing it form auto to manual each time.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI must admit that this posting is a last resort. However, remarkably, on narrowing the problem it seems it has to do with an unknown default setting on my Mac OS X Leopard on both my MacBook and iMac.
This week I invested in two new Wireless-N routers - Belkin and D-Link - and both fail to perform. The problem manifests itself as follows:
- When my Apple is wirelessly connected to the router, it takes a very long time to pull up any website. And unless I am imagining things, it seems to first pause when the blue progress indicator reaches just beyond "[URL]" each time. It is slow loading beyond this initial pause as well.
- When I change my security from WPA2 to WEP to None, it makes no difference whatsoever.
- When my Apple is connected to the router via ethernet, it performs very well. Each website appears very quickly and as expected i.e. no wireless connection.
- Very surprisingly, when I am using Windows via Boot Camp on my iMac, it performs very well when *wirelessly* connected. This threw me a little. This is what led me to suspect there's a default configuration with my Mac OS X that is causing the problem.
- In light of the above point, I have not yet checked to see whether wireless frequency or channel affect the download speed.
- For 2.5 years I had been using a Netgear Wireless-G router without any problem.
Might anyone know what the problem is? Or at the very least how better to diagnose it?
I bought a Airport Express so I could stream my music through my big money home stereo system. According to the manual I could use the AirPort express to expand my pre-existing wireless network.I started working on this at 9Pm and finally figured it out by 4AM First I have the Belkin F5D7231-4 so this will work with this router & I've heard the F5D7230-4. Basically your Belkin needs to support "Wireless Bridge" or "WDS".
Configuring the Belkin:Set your DHCP Server Range to what ever you desire. I use 192.168.2.2 - 192.168.2.22. Save your Changes.Go to Wireless Bridge: Enable Wireless Bridging & Enable Only Specific Access Points to connect.. Input the mac address of your Air Port Express into the field and save your changes.Next configure your wireless security. You have to choose WPA "2". I repeat you have to choose WPA2. Setup your password and save your changes.For the Encryption Technique I use TKIP. I have not tried AES and can not verify it works.Save your changes and say man this is pretty easy so far.Configuring the AirPort Express to act as an expander:At this point its a good idea to take a pin and reset the AirPort Express. After it boots back up change your wireless networks and log on to it.Loadup the Airport Admin Utility.Now choose to configure your AirPort Express.

So I want to setup an (advanced?) network using my existing wired router (sorry, have to use this cause of my IP-Telephone and my ISP), An Airport Extreme for high-speed N wireless to my MBP and an Airport Express for music streaming and slow wireless acces for my ibook and other devices (I don't want to compromise my N-connection for the MBP). I would like to let the existing router handle all the NAT (I barely know what this is) and stuff like that and simply let the Airports act like bridges (or something along thoose lines if possible).. The reson for this is I've heard the extreme has performance issues when going through NAT-handling or using the WAN-port (is it possible to connect the existing router to a LAN-port on the extreme and still have internet acces or does it have to connect to the WAN-port?) The MBP should be able to connect to the express exlusivly for music-streaming to my stereo (if it's possible to connect to the extreme using wireless and somehow the extreme is so smart it routes trough cable to the express that would be even more awsome!). The Ibooks and other devices would connect wirelessly to the express for internet and music streaming.....
View 6 Replies View RelatedI currently have the first generation 1TB Time Capsule which only supports compatibility mode for 802.11n. Using a slingcatcher, I get better speeds (way less video stuttering) running 5GHZ only mode vs compatibility mode. However, running 5ghz mode is annoying because my Eye-Fi card and iPhone aren't compatible with 802.11n. So I have two options. 1) Keep current Time Capsule. Buy a used Airport Extreme for $100 or UFO one for $30-$50. Connect AirPort Extreme to Time Capsule. 2) Selling my old Time Capsule. Buy new Time Capsule 1TB. Price for the older Time Capsule 1TB is only $20-$30 less than the new Time Capsule.

I would like to play iTunes music on the stero system in room B.
Do I have to buy two AirPort Express routers? One connected to the internet in room A and one connected to my stero in room B?
My current network in my apartment is as follows:
- cable modem
- one G airport express hooked to cable modem & a stereo
- another G airport express connected via WDS, attached to a stereo & printer
Except for the convenience of the 2 stereos for airtunes & the location of the printer, there's no need for the 2 airport express devices to be honest
While I have a bunch of G devices, I'm starting to accumulate some N devices, and for what I'm planning, I'd like to make use of the Extreme's gigabit ethernet ports in the location of my cable modem as well (which also happens to be where my TV is, going to set up some sort of media device). At the same time, I'd like to have the airtunes to both stereos and the printer connectivity without having to move either of the stereos or the printer.
I just wanted to verify that I could do what I was thinking here, the network would be structured as follows:
- cable modem
- extreme hooked to cable modem, broadcasting 2 SSIDs
- express hooked to the stereo, connected via WDS on 2.4ghz SSID
- express hooked to stereo & printer, connected via WDS on 2.4gz SSID
- any N device can connect to the 5ghz SSID but still interact (ssh, etc) with the stereos, printer, and machines on the 2.4ghz SSID
- any device on the 2.4ghz SSID can interact (ssh, etc) with the devices on the 5ghz SSID
Is this possible? And even if so, is there a better way to set things up to get what I want
Am seriously considering the new AEBS but seems some confusion over whether the ports offer gigabit Ethernet, can someone with the router confirm or deny this? Also how is the range compared with similar N routers?

If I were to purchase Snow Leopard and install it on the Macbook, would I then be able to use the copy of Leopard that came with the Macbook on the iMac? I am not trying to use 2 copies of the same thing on different machines, I just want to put a new os on one machine and move the existing one to another.I am reluctant to purchase the Mac Box Set version of Snow Leopard for the iMac because I do not want or need iLife and iWork.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've had an iMac for just about a year and over time I guess I just didn't notice but the machine always ran very quietly. At the same time the back of the computer would heat up so bad that it would nearly burn my hand if I left it there. Well last week I decided to upgrade to Lion from Snow Leopard and when I did the install failed and froze up the hard drive. I took the computer in to the apple store and they determined that it had to have a new hard drive installed because the old one (only a year old) had a physical malfunction (was broke). So anyway I have my iMac back and get it started up, backed up from time machine, and then finally get Lion istalled - and now all of the sudden I notice that the fans in the computer are CONSTANTLY blowing - I can hear them spinning and can hear the air venting out of the back of the computer - and the computer is STILL really hot on the backside of the screen.
So now I am wondering if the originial problem was the computer heating up and if that may have broken the otherwise good hard drive? Also now that I have a new hard drive - should I be concerned about the fans being on ALL the time? I mean they never go off. Even when I leave the computer for hours and come back to it and the screen is asleep the fans are STILL buzzing away at top speed. Here is the stats on the computer at the time that I'm typing this note - there are no other programs running than Firefox and Mail. Also - I don't know what the optical drive is exaclty - but if it's the DVD drive (superdrive) - there is nothing in the DVD disc drive

My Macbook Pro (from mid-2010) has recently started running EXTREMELY slowly, and the fan continuously runs loudly. From other posts, I have checked my activity monitor to see if any process is taking up a lot of the CPU % and have found that nothing seems high, except the kernel_task which, from what I understand, is supposed to be high. I have also attempted to reset the SMC which didn't fix the problem either. I have taken my computer to the genius bar 3 times now, and they keep telling me nothing is wrong (because it works perfectly there), but when I get it home the fan comes back on, and everything runs slowly.

My Mac feels as if it is running slower these last couple of months. I have thought of pursuing a commercially available "clean up" product, but thought I would try the community first and also for pointers using the Mac's own internal diagnostics or system improvement capabilities. Any and all advice is most welcome. I have a 250GB hard drive that is half full, I always update to latest revisions and have an extra high-speed internet connection. Computer is not heavily loaded with apps and typically using Firefox for browsing. (MS Office for Mac as well, but usually limited to one program such as MS Word or Excel at a time.) No heavy graphics utilization. Videos from the internet load slowly and some are choppy. Even scrolling just doesn't seem "brisk".

This is the first time I've tried OWC memory. So far, so good - the Mac recognizes the RAM and boots okay. Everything I've tried thus far post-upgrade works. I am a happy camper now - my Mac was a bit sluggish due to running out of physical RAM running Parallels.
View 1 Replies View RelatedSince I updated to 10.6.6 earlier today I've noticed that the fan in my MBA (13" late-2010 model) is running constantly. This is rare -- I hardly ever hear it. I opened activity monitor and 'System' is using 45% CPU time, and it's pretty constant.
I have absolutely no clue why -- there's nothing in console to suggest it's doing some task, and I can't see any other hints. Apart from the noise and the heat (though don't get me wrong -- compared to my old MBP it's not really noisy or hot, but I liked it better when it was totally quiet and cold), it's also killing the battery -- 25% has gone in less than an hour.
I am running into issues with trying to run three LED monitors,two 24's and the new 27" apple LED's.As of right now I have both of them running off my GTX-285 and things are great.I of course had to third part the deal,good old Atlona and dial that in.For me to run another monitor,I have to install another card.I was very close to getting the 5870,I can't seem to find it for sale anywhere.Now I hear the 5870 has issues as well,so I am thinking about running two GTX-285's in my MacPro,I don't know if it can be done.I am not sure if there is another power input for the second card.If anyone has any info if this will work,or it won't work,or which card to get.I was thinking about getting two 5870's and running those and then I should be all set.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI had the chance to get one X5355 CPU for a good price to upgrade my old 5150 CPUs in my Mac Pro. Of course I would like to get a second 5355 to get 8 cores at the end but you never now when the next nice offer will apear .
Now I ask myself if I should already replace both 5150s with this one 5355 CPU. Does the Mac Pro work with one CPU? Any consequences for the Memory? I have memory modules in all 8 slots, will the 2nd riser card still work even if one CPU is removed?
I have the Blackbook 4,1 (2.4gh) - but I know by default SL runs 32bit on startup. This is SL 10.6.0
But via Activity Monitor - I see Intel (64-Bit) running on most of my programs.
Anyways - I thought programs are suppose to be running 32bit via SL since the macbooks/pros/imacs/ everything else besides XServe are efi 32bit?
I'm adding iTunes and need to update the 10.4.9 to run it, I'm currently on 10.3.9. I do NOT use my Mac for anything heavy, surfing the web is all it ever does, so I don't need anything massive to download or upgrade to, I don't even watch vids or movies, so please don't suggest a full system upgrade or a jump to 10.6 or whatever is currently the newest platform. I just want to use iTunes to burn my CDs so I can throw them away once and for all.
So, what's the easiest/cheapest way to DL 10.4.9 to a 10.3.9 existing unit? And be gentle too, I'm computer illiterate.
