I have a MAC G5, OS 10.5.8. I wanted to change some settings on the computer, but when I entered the administrator password it did not work.I was told that I had to boot up with the system CD and then enter a new admin password, which I did. It seemed to work fine. Now I would like to eliminate the password entirely, but when I go to that section and enter a password, it reads "Incorrect Password"! It seems to work for individual applications, but when it comes to eliminating the password completely, no luck. Could it be looking for the old (UNKNOWN) password? If so I have tried everything and still nothing.

At first I thought little of it since it worked after the 4 or 5 time, but now it's not working and I can't install system updates. How can I reset the password or will that require wiping the system?

View 6 Replies View RelatedRecently I lost my admin identity password and consequently I was unable to trash applications or any file requiring the admin password. And so I reset this by reinstalling the setup (this is a bit of a hack I learned about through Youtube). After rebooting the system I was asked to create a new admin which I did and then I was asked whether I wanted to transfer the data I answered no to this option.
All my data (files, folders, photos, music, etc. now resides in an identity called Main User. How do I import all this material into my new admin identity or manage this such that all the preferences, bookmarks, Microsoft email user identity and all privileges are restored to how they were before?
I've been getting kernel panics for a while nowand I did not install any new hardware or apps, so I decided to create a new account and I've been going strong for a week without any panics. I then decided to log back into my main account and after 2 days I got a panic. I always just use Safari 5 web this happens. I did not install any plugins prior to all these panics
View 14 Replies View RelatedI realized recently that ODT files (whether they're from NeoOffice or TextEdit) weren't working in QuickLook for me, but they're supposed to. I tried making a new temporary account on my MacBook (same computer) to test it, and while in that account, I can QuickLook any .odt. I should also note that .odt's in the Finder on my main account have a plain document icon, but when I'm in the temporary account they show the .odt icon. It's possible I accidentally recklessly deleted some file or something I shouldn't have when I was uninstalling NeoOffice or something, and if someone knew where the applicable file is supposed to be, I could copy it from the temp account to my main account.

I was able to create another admin account to at least start the iMac.  I had upgraded to Yosemite but I restored back to 10.9 - still no luck. I found a thread to attempt to repair the sparse file - running legacy file vault (which sounds like a mistake). double clicking the sparse file does not open disk utility.Â

I want to turn on parental controls on the main account. But yeah, OS X wants me to make an extra account. I'm only asking because I want to have all my files on that account while using Parental controls. If not i'll just make another account

How do I set up mailbox so that all incoming emails from my secondary gmail account bypass my inbox and go directly to a pre-labeled smart folder? Also, how do I send copies of these to my primary gmail account into a pre-labeled folder in that account; once again bypassing my inbox (primary reason is that I do not want to get all my work emails into my inbox but I need to have them connected to mailbox at the end of the day. Â

View 12 Replies View RelatedMy mother recently passed away and I've inherited her Mac Pro. She was the official "administrator" and no one knows her password. Is there any way to reset the password without knowing the original password? Or, is there a way to reset the whole laptop to factory settings? I'm not concerned about losing content from the laptop.

I'm working on a Mac-mini running OS X Tiger. I've got one admin account setup and 5 or so standard accounts. I'm configuring a connection to a shared folder on a network server on the standard accounts and I wanted to connect to that share using an account id that is DIFFERENT than the standard account id. I enter that id and the correct password and I check "save password in keychain" (or whatever that check box says) and I get prompted to enter the "keychain password" to unlock the keychain. The problem is, I never setup a keychain password for the standard user account. I'v tried the password for the administrator account (even though I can't specify the admin id anywhere) and I've tried the password for the standard user account, neither of which work.
However, I can still get successfully connected to the shared folder. I just don't want the user to have to enter the password each time they login.
Additionally, after going through this, Safari is now asking for a keychain password for the "login" keychain when it first starts up and loads the default Apple.com home page.
Is there a way to have a different mail password instead of using the one that you use to login to Lion directly? Currently the two are the same login password = mail password.I'd like to have a different password for the two.Is this possible whether via command line or otherwise?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have created user accounts on my iMac for each of my kids. Whenever we try to login to my daughter's account, we see the standard 'galaxy' background, then a flash of gray, then the background again and then that process repeats over and over. The DVD Player app is running, but I cannot figure out a way to kill it or get out of the endless loop. Everytime she logs in, I end up having to hold the button on the back of the computer to shut it off, then restart everything.
Is there a way to sign in to her account without having all the applications launched that were running when she signed out? I think that might be the first step to fixing everything, but I can't figure out how to do that. Is there a preferences file I can kill? Or are there aliases in a folder somewhere that contain the items to be relaunched at startup? Her account is managed under parental controls.

I bought a macbook 3yrs ago and I let my brother use it and he locked it and I dont know what to do.
I tried to put the osx cd in and press c or option on startup and all I get is a lock asking for a password. On normal logon it asks for user name and password. He remembers the user but not the password. Is there any way to reset it completely?
He deleted my user and saved my files on his side.
I want my pictures and things but I dont have to have them
I just recently got an iBook G3. I found it in my towns recycling center and brought it home. The user on it does not have admin privileges. Seeing how it's old and is running 10.2 I was just going to install some sort of Linux on it. I went to go boot into a CD and it came up with a grey screen with a password prompt? I don't have the password. Does the same thing if I try to boot into single user mode.

My friend bought a 13" MBP (April 2010) from someone at a cheaper price, but that person didn't provide the original installation disks. I have a Snow Leopard Disc which I bought for $50 as an upgrade from Leopard. Any chance that can be used to reset the password?
