OS X :: Install Disks / Machine Specific?
Jan 17, 2009
Just heard that Mac's Install disks are machine specific. Is that really the case? If so, why? Coming from the PC world, I'm used to just putting the OS disk in the CD/DVD drive and take it from there. So, if I want to install a Mac OS on my machine not only do I have to obtain the OS, I also have to get the proper Install CDs/DVD's or what? Please clear up the fog Mac experts.

I'm aware that in installing Leopard on a drive using one Mac it can then be booted on another Mac without a problem.
I'm getting a new MacBook Pro this christmas (mainly out of selling my existing iMac 08) I want to back up everything before selling the it. I have already bought a 320gb SATA drive to upgrade the MBPro, if I just install Mac Leopard onto the drive using my iMac and an external enclosure and backup all my stuff to it, will it work 100% on the MBPro? - Or is there certain things which are specifically installed when installing on the Mac...?

I have a Macbook Pro Intel Core Duo (first generation of MacBook Pro released). I run OSX 10.6.5. My disk utility has detected a problem and says I need the install disks that came with the computer. Called apple and they said I could reboot from snow leopard or the upgrade.** Problem is that I don't have any disks with me except those that came with my brand new iMac. Can I use those to reinstall the system? Is there any other way?
**They also said that after 2007, the install disks that come with computers are keyed to that specific computer so I "might" not be able to use the disk to repair.
Additionally, and I don't know if this makes a difference but I have the airport/time capsule which backs up my computer for easy restore.

I'm running on an iMac and my system recently crashed. I went through the whole process of trying to reboot in Safe mode, then running Disk Utility, then 'fsck'. Looks like my drive should work, but it still freezes upon startup.
So. My last option is to reinstall OS X from my install disk. Not a big deal since I've been running Time Machine backups on an external drive. Here's the problem: my install disk is 10.4.10 but my backups are from Leopard. I upgraded to Leopard online without purchasing a disk.
Is there any way to do a full system restore from my Time Machine backup without the 10.5 disk?
Can I reinstall 10.4, then upgrade to Leopard (or Snow Leopard), and then run my full restore? Would I then need to clone my system to a separate drive before restoring to my internal drive?

we recently bought a new iMac with Mavericks and a Lacie 5big thunderbolt series disk. At the Lacie disk we configured as they were 2 hard dsik of 4 Tb each one and added to time machine. Today the user called saying that time machine only made 2 copies one general at 4pm and the other one at the second disk at 7pm and no more copies until 10pm.
I know that time machine makes copies every hour, every day , every month, etc; so we were thinking why it only made 3 copies in that mount of time and why it took the second disk. In the old iMac with Lion this never happened.

I purchased my MacBook in August 2006 and it came with 10.4.X and I have been fine with using that OS. However, just recently (august 08) my sister purchased another Macbook. Her Macbook came with the 10.5.4 install disks. I tried to put these into my macbook just to see if for some reason apple was nice enough to allow people who purchased new macbooks to update all other macbooks they owned. However, it does not appear to work that way. Is there any way I can get the 10.5.4 Install disks to work on my macbook (purchased august 06) that is currently running 10.4.11?

I recently purchased a new Mac Pro which came with iLife 09.My MBA came with iLife 08.I'd like to do a clean reinstall on my MBA and add the 09 apps.
First, what's on what DVD? Is the OS on one DVD and all the bundled apps on the other or is there a mix of apps on both DVD's?One potential snag is that I recall reading somewhere that the MP install of OSX includes optimizations/support for Nehalem... would this screw up my MBA or would it ignore that stuff?

Somehow I ended up with two backup folders for Time Machine: inside the Backups.backupdb folder are "Pedro's MBP" which contains backups from 2008, and "Pedro's MBP2" which contains backups from 2009. This was not intended. Now when I open Time Machine, I have to select either "MBP" or "MBP2" to read from, but if I select "MBP2", for example, I can not see the backups inside "MBP" and vice-versa.
How can I merge these two sets of backups into one common folder? ie, merge all backups from "MBP2" into "MBP", so that when I open Time Machine, ALL backups are available at the same time. I have seen posts covering how to copy/move backups to a NEW backup drive, how to make and use multiple Time Machine drives, but nothing on how to merge multiple backup folders or disks into one.

At work I back up my laptop to an external disk using time machine. I'd like have a second back up at home. When I back up to the disk at home Time Machine does not recognize the back up on the work disk and writes the whole drive instead of doing an incremental back up. Does this mean that Time Machine can only do incremental back ups to one disk?

I'm trying to reinstall Mac OS X on my MBP using the original install disks. OS X was replaced by Ubuntu and now I'm trying to replace Ubuntu with OS X. When I insert the OS X CDs and try to boot from them, either by holding down the 'C' key or the option key and choosing the Mac OS X CD, the CD simply ejects, and then the computer proceeds to boot from the HD and into Ubuntu.

I have 2 hard disks which I use for Time Machine, one for the main system, and one for my data. However, whenever I backup, I have to reconfigure what it backs up, and this is quite an annoyance as Time Machine is supposed to be a simple. Is there anyway I can save a configuration file for it that I can use for each drive?

What's the best way of backing up a time machine backup external hard disk? Are there any disk checking tools for the mac, I could use to keep track of the health of the drive?
I can not afford too loose data, but I don't wish to break the bank either.

I want to wipe my system and only restore certain files to keep my system uncluttered and fresh. I use Time Machine so I thought I don't have anything to do now that everything is backed up. Someone told me once that Time Machine files can only be accessed by the user that created them (me). If I wipe my hard drive, that user will no longer exist. When I reinstall OS X, it will be a new user, so would that new user still be able to easily access and copy back the files from the Time Machine drive onto the internal drive?
I know there's a feature called "Browse other Time Machine Disks" but I don't know if that allows me to do anything I want and whether it will conflict with the new system. I also know about Migration Assistant but I don't want to use such automatic methods since I'm afraid it will restore problems from my old system. So in short, will I be able to easily get my files back one by one (not "all or nothing" like with Migration Assistant) from Time Machine when I will have my clean, freshly reinstalled OS X, with possibly a different username? Or does this only work if I type in the exact same user name as I am using now?

My dad's iMac was stolen this weekend and am now trying to restore his iPhoto Library from Time Machine backup.
The Mavericks iMac was dutifully backed up over the network to a Mavericks OSX Server Mac Pro Time Machine Server's Drobo for months. I am now attempting to restore the iPhoto library at the Finder level to a Mavericks Macbook Pro.
I have connected to the server's backup disk via Finder and see his "Alan's iMac" listed there without the red minus circle. I then click on the Time Machine icon in the Menu bar and hold down the option key and select "browse other backup disks". I then select "Alan's iMac" and then Time Machine starts up, but it is not showing his files prior to Tuesday, the day I setup the Macbook Pro.
I need to be able to access iPhoto Library from August 30th which came from his now stolen iMac in order to restore to the Macbook Pro.

I have a summer 2005 14" iBook G4 that I'd like to wipe and give to a friend, but I seem to have lost my install disks somewhere in one of my moves in the last 5 years. The Apple Store employee I talked to said I should make an appointment at the Genius Bar and they'll do a wipe and reinstall for me, but I'm not interested in putting much more money into this since I'm giving it to a friend as a favor (hers just died). Any suggestions for how to get a copy of the right OS and all the iLife software, too? It has Tiger, but I could put Leopard on it, if that's easier to get a hold of.

I have an intel mac (macbook) with a fresh (not upgraded) copy of Leo. Apparently this does matter, as Tiger would have been able to mount the disk with no problem so I suspect that ability remains in the computer when upgraded (only a suspicion). I have been trying for 3 days to get my Canon solutions disk (14.3) to mount in Leopard. When I insert it, it just spits back out after spinning up.
Canon support had no idea what to do, and apple wasn't giving me any help since it is a third party app, they simply sent me the direction of canon for a fix.
Thankfully I figured out a solution. This should work for all who have disks that will not mount and spit back out. As a last resort right before I pulled my hair out I decided to try and force the disk to mount by holding the shift key while inserting the Canon Solutions disk. IT WORKED!
Do not let go of that shift key until the disk is mounted completely and the installer icon is on the desktop. Once it is mounted you are good to go and it installs with no problem.
I hope this information can help some of you having this issue.

I have had problems with my macbook grey screening and having to shut down by holding down the power button (I get the screen with the instructions how to reboot in 5 different languages). When I start it up again I get the panic report from the shut down.In Utilities, Disk Utility I ran the Repair Disk and received the message that the disk was damaged and I had to do the reapir from the install disk.
So I put the install disk in (came with the laptop, 10.6) and I tried to repair the disk using the disk utility from the install disk. Two problems: when I insert the disk, restart while holding down the 'C' key, nothing happens (stays at the grey screen) until I let go of the 'C' key and then I get another Panic and have to reboot manually. So I tried inserting the install disk with the laptop already on and clicking on the disk to hopefully get to the disk utility or at least reinstall the OS, which leads to problem two: I receive the message 'Mac OS X 10.6 cannot be installed on this computer.' My laptop is currently running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.

I wish to use the Time Machine function to backup only one specific folder on my computer, the DROPBOX folder. How can I implement this and inform Time Machine of my choice?
According to my first investigations, I only have the choice to select folders to EXCLUDE. This makes the setup of Time Machine unconfortable.

I'm having problems with Time Machine. First, I get the message that I need more space even though there is 1TB available on each and only 500GB on the boot disk being backed up. I've started fresh.
Second, both backup disks are shown on the "Exclude" list and are grayed out, so I can't take them off it. Nor can I add a disk I do want to exclude.

I have a 20" Intel based iMac (model A1224) running Snow Leopard. It is just over a year old and only had the original Apple keyboard and mouse plugged into it. Today when I tried to start it I got only a blank gray screen. I tried all the keyboard combo start-up suggestions in the Apple help screens, unplugging/replugging everything, and booting with the Original disk and the Snow Leopard disk. A couple of those attempts produced a minute of the gray apple logo screen, then back to blank. While the disks were in it did sound like it was trying to read them, but spit out the disks after about 5 minutes.

So I'm trying to upgrade an older MacBook from an 80GB hard drive to a 250 GB hard drive and from 1 to 2GB of RAM. Easy things to upgrade, done it dozens of times before. Here's the catch; I don't have the original install disks in my possession and need to upgrade this by next week. Also, the optical drive is totally fried but I don't want to replace it. So, is it possible to do this without having to buy an external optical drive/without the original install disks?
