OS X :: Unload Unnecessary Stuff

Sep 4, 2009

I am still using Tiger. Down to about 15% (17 of 104GB) free space on hard drive and looking to unload unnecessary stuff. /Library/Printers (3GB): I assume I can safely get rid of everything related to printers I do not use.... /Library/Audio/Apple Loops (3GB): of stuff for GarageBand and iLife, which I never use... /Library/Application Support: another 3GB of stuff for GarageBand and iLife... (in fact, can I simply Spotlight for GarageBand and iLife and remove almost everything associated?) Any reasons I should not delete the above? Anything else I should consider deleting? (The big hog is Parallels, but I use that daily). I have pared Documents to the essentials.

Mac Pro :: RAM - Where To Unload It

Jul 22, 2008

I had a MP 2006 version and earlier this spring got an '08 version. Obviously, the '06 version that came standard with 2x512MB FB-DIMMs was under-powered so I got 2x1GB Netlist FD-DIMMS from OWC. When I got my '08 version I didn't want to put the 667MHz DIMMS in there with 800MHz stuff. For some reason, I was under the impression that I could get the $55 trade-in RAM rebate from OWC but they've said it only applies to the RAM that comes from Apple, not from third-party sellers...even themselves. So, that leaves me with 2x1GB FB DIMMS. There's nothing wrong with them at all but I'd like to hear from some others what a reasonable asking price is and where the best place to sell them is.

OS X :: Wants To Leave Stuff On To Upload Or Download Stuff?

Mar 4, 2009

Is it bad for Macs to leave them on a long time when you're not using it?

My nephew once told me he puts his PC off when he goes to school for example, because it would be better for his pc.

Does this count for...
- My PowerBook, running on cable (not battery, whatever)?
- My (to buy) 24'' iMac?

Reason is I sometimes want to leave my stuff on to upload or download stuff...

OS X :: Checking Hard Drive Load And Unload Cycles?

Dec 30, 2009

I just put in a 320gb 7.2K HD to replace my MacBook's 120GB. I'm wondering how to check the load and unload cycles of the new hard drive?

Also, I've got all my stuff on my 120GB drive while the new 320 is in my MacBook with a fresh install of Snow Leopard. I've got a hard drive dock that connects via USB. Can I somehow get all my files off of the 120gb drive without switching the drives out?

OS X :: Turn Off Unnecessary Processes?

May 9, 2008

I am a windows dude, you can tell. I need to turn off unnecessary processes on a Mac. In "Windows", I would edit the startup processes... and in Computer admin, turn off all "services" I did not need.

What do I do on a Mac? I need it to be permanent, not temporary (like I know how to shut off iTunes helper for a session- I want it off after restarts, too.

Also, I want to pare this mac down to just the essentials- any advice for what to kill, and what I should not touch?

It seems that whenever I uninstall an application, there is always an empty folder of the program I uninstalled in Library>Application Support and possibly others. Why wouldn't OS X delete those automatically after I uninstalled them? They obviously don't take up too much space cause it's just an empty folder, but why doesn't os x automatically delete it?

OS X :: PayPal Related Print Anomaly - Unnecessary Pages Show?

Feb 10, 2010

We use Paypal to print off and pay for postage labels. Usually there are 2 or 3 pages depending on the country the label is for. Unfortunately, we don't need the customs label or the insurance page, so 2 out of 3 pages are a waste of ink and time and unfortunately again, these 2 unecessary pages have a habit of printing out first..Until I installed Snow Leopard last year. And magically the print order reversed and I was able to get my label off and cancel the rest.I got a new printer this week, and it's printing back in the old order Totally miffed. Anyway to affect the label order? It's going to save so much trouble

OS X :: Transferring Stuff From Old Mac To New Mac

Oct 27, 2009

i finally did it and bought a new MBP...now is there an easy way to transfer my itunes, photos and movies to the new computer? The guy at the store sold me a firewire cable with an adapter so my old Mac (the "pixar" iMac from about 7 to 8 years ago) with its 400 firewire speed could then be connected to the MBP...but I am scared... I would like to keep everything on the old machine for now and just copy them over...

OS X :: Login And All Stuff Gone

Apr 27, 2010

I ran into a huge problem today, it seems, and I'm hoping someone here can offer some help. Just for starters, I have a 13" MBP with Snow Leopard. So I tried logging onto my account just now, but accidentally clicked the guest one. In order to somehow undo that, I stupidly hit esc and then command+z repeatedly a few times. It brought me back to the login page, where I logged into my account, but when I did ALL OF MY STUFF was gone--files, pictures, music, folders, documents, etc.--and it was back to all the default settings. I looked through all the folders and everything is GONE. I tried restarting with no luck. I logged into the guest account too and that's also default (as per usual though). Does anyone have any idea how I managed this? Is there a way to fix it and get my stuff back? I'm freaking out because everything I ever needed is (was?) on my mac.

MacBook Pro :: Won't Turn On - Get Stuff Off?

Dec 27, 2010

My 2007 MBP won't boot up, or at least the screen won't turn on. The genius diagnosed it as an issue with the logic board. I'm not quite two months out of warranty, so it's $310 to fix -- but I spilled water on it three years ago, and if damage is detected, my repair options start to get pretty pricey. I'm now the proud owner of the base-model 13" MBP, which is great, though it hasn't been 24 hours yet. I'm still planning to send the old MBP out to attempt the $310 repair, and we'll keep it as a backup if they'll fix it. However, I'd really like to get my data off the hard drive before I ship it out. I keep hoping it will magically boot up -- it's come back to life a couple of times since I started having this problem -- but I can't expect it to.

What is the easiest way to get my info off the hard drive so I can load everything onto my new MBP? I don't want to do anything more that would give Apple reason to say they can't do the repair. I know I should've backed up, but I didn't, and I can assure you I've learned my lesson ... the hard way.

MacBook :: Transfer All Stuff From Old Hd To New One?

i have a macbook 2.0 unibody. i just bought 500Gb internal hard drive and i want to replace the stock 160Gb with it. how do i move all my stuff from my old drive to the new one? i don't have the cash to buy an external hard drive just so i can move my stuff back and forth, i will have no need for an external right now since i have a 500Gb internal. someone told me to get an HDD caddy and use the stock drive as an external. what i am wondering is, will i be able to transfer all my applications without having the install files (i deleted all my install files as soon as i installed them). is it going to be a simple "drag and drop" kind of deal and every file knows exactly where to go? i just don't know what complications might come about.

OS X :: Transferring Windows Stuff To Mac

May 8, 2010

I am planning on getting a Mac in a few weeks time as I am going to sell my old windows 7 PC and then install Windows 7 again on my mac via bootcamp. Obviously when i get my mac i can easily transfer all my files onto it but I would loose all my programs. My question is if I was to create an image file of the hard drive on my windows PC could i then use that and Restore it on my Mac, obviously in a separate partition? I have already found a program that i believe will be able to restore my Windows image file in that separate partition, which is winclone:

[URL]

I just wanted to know if my theory would actually work. Should I have any problems? I will also be using Macrium Reflect to make the image file: [URL] Also I am planning to get a macbook pro 13"
