OS X :: Unable To Ssh Into Another System / Could Not Resolve Host-name
Jan 6, 2011
I turned on remote login on the mac I wanted to ssh into and typed in what I was told to by the remote login preference pane which was ssh AccountName@Mac-Name.config
and the terminal returned the following ssh: Could not resolve hostname Mac-Name.config: nodename nor servname provided, or not known
I am trying to update fink. But the response I always get is: Can't resolve dependency "fink (>= 0.28.0-1)" for package "giflib-4.1.6-2" (no matching packages/versions found. I had trouble with x11 and all unix based applications since I switched to leopard.
I am trying to install windows 7 on macbook air, through an external DVD drive, since USB didnt work for me. The DVD is detected and ounce I click start windows installation, the system boots and gets stuck at the gray boot screen with the apple logo. What is causing this? how can I solve this?
Since upgrading to 10.6.5 I have had DNS problems.Whilst nslookup and ping will resolve the DNS names to their correct IP addresses, safari and other services won't.
The problem seems to be related purely to CNAME entries which are in a different forward lookup zone to the A record.
For instance if we had a forward lookup zone of foo.bar and an A record of www going to 10.1.1.15 (www.foo.bar = 10.1.1.15) and then a CNAME record of go in a zone bloo.by (go.bloo.by = www.foo.bar) then ping and nslookup will resolve go.bloo.by to 10.1.1.15 but it seems safari can't.
I'm trying to download a WMA file from a server. I can connect to the server, the passwords work okay and I can see the file, but when I try to download I get one of two messages, either 'can't connect to host' or 'resource unavailable'.
I'm using an iMac 10.4.11 and I believe I have my firewall set correctly. I've also tried to download via an ftp manager (actually I've tried about 3) with the same results. Can anyone help with some advice? I've recently returned to mac after using a pc for years and I'm not the most technical person. The server host doesn't think there are problems their end.
Everytime I open iChat, it will not let me log in and it says "The host refused the connection" So some people have suggested that I change the port number to 443. Which then I can log in but I can't video chat. Does anyone know how to fix this?
For the past 3 nights, at exactly midnight, my iBook G4 running OS10.5.6 has crashed (screen goes grey, tells me to restart).
I'm thinking I'm probably going to have to reinstall the OS, unless anyone has any brilliant and wonderful ideas that I could try before going to all this effort?
I am a proud owner of a MAC powerbook G4 for just over 3 years now. It runs MAc OX 10.3. For the last two weeks i have been having issues. First it started to be very slow. Then it would not boot up and i got a blue screen. I ran the file system checks from the OS X and it complained about the volume being bad and said it could not be repaired. i decided to reinstall the whole thing and did a complete erase and install. IT booted up fine. The software updater asked permission to update which i agreed.
After the update was over, the software updater had more updates. I guessed that it was probably giving me updates in the chronological order. During a particular update, it gave the blue screen and "please restart" ... and when i rebooted it did not come up... just a blue screen... i verified the filesystem using the diagnostic tool and it again said it was corrupt .... I have done this twice now and i have a feeling it happened when i was updating the same batch of software updates.... sometimes my software updater would crash everytime i launch it.....
For some reason my mail app keeps crashing everytime I launch it? This just started happening today. I tried repairing disk permissions but its still doing it.
could not be sure whether the Admin user - password reset with the CD would be the solution to my question as suggested in previous threads I searched - and have no idea where my start up install CD is
So my question-
I was trying to put parental control to ask for password when my computer starts up. I did something I guess and messed up the info.
I can log in with my own account when I restart my apple - which says now it is a standard account (must have messed that up)- but can not make any changes on system preferences or anything else that requires login and password. It requires Admin info. My own login that I use now used to be my admin so do not have any other info set.
now on system pref - accounts - an account titled "test" seems to be admin but can not even access that and reverse myself to be the admin since I can not unlock system pref. Or cant click on "Login Options" for the same reason.
There are no other users on this computer than me.
I've got an HP Laser Jet connected to my Time Capsule that until recently worked just fine. I was able to print to it from both Lion machines on my network (and my Windows XP box). We also have an HP PhotoSmart printer D110 on the same wireless network. After applying the 10.7.3 update, none of the computers on my network can print. They all give me "printer not connected" messages.I thought it might have been the Time Capsule, but we can't print to the D110, either and it has its own print server.Has anyone else run into this with 10.7.3?
So I've been having problems with my TC for awhile but it has gotten much worse. Now I find that I lose my wired and wireless network often. If I go to where TC is I notice that it is very hot. I unplug it and if I leave it unplugged for a while and replug it in I can get back TC. Usually if I replug it in right away it will come back but I lose it a minute later. The length of time it is unplugged for corresponds to how long it will stay active.
I'm assuming the problem is the heat b/c of the hard drive spinning. However this seems strange that this would be a problem as I'm sure Apple would realize that these drives will get hot and there aren't a ton of problems like this. Do you think I should have it replaced? Any ideas that I should try first? If I replace the TC with an old Linksys router I don't have any problems with it, it is just much slower since it is G not N.
I am thinking about purchasing a X25-M SSD for a 13" MBP once prices drop (hopefully by the end of the year) but also want to run Windows. Multiple sources have stated that it is an amazing drive but that you cannot install/run Windows using Boot Camp. Most of these articles/posts are dated early 2009 however.
I'm curious, did the April firmware release solve this problem or did it only address the fragmentation issue causing massive slow downs? If not, can someone explain to me why it is that Boot Camp is compatible? Is it the expectation that the new Intel SSDs scheduled to be released later this year will resolve this problem if it is not already corrected? Also, for those of you who actually have one of these, did the firmware update completely resolve the fragmentation issue?
I was watching a DVD movie on this laptop yesterday, and when I turned my laptop and this morning to continued watching, the DVD randomly ejected. It's not scratched, and no it's not pirated. I tried different brands of CDs and DVDs, and my laptop just spits them out.
After upgrading to snow leopard I noticed a lot of my videos, downloaded from the Internet, bought of itunes, and burnt to a disk, now look very washed out, kind of fuzzy. I don't think it's my imagination.
I have a MacBook Pro. Recently, I bought a silly little app called Remote Jr. for my iPhone. It allows me to view my desktop through Wi-FI or 3G iPhone internet from anywhere. However, the little app is nothing but trouble. I need to find the host so that the Remote program can locate my computer.
When I look on my routers DCHP tables, I can see my two iMac's but there is no 'Host Name' data next to the IP Address (there is with the various other devices).Where to I tell the iMac what 'Host Name' I want it to have in order for it to report this back to the router?
I have a 8TB Mac Pro 8-Core (OS X 10.6.2) and an affordable fast internet connection. I'm going to self-host my website via XAMPP for Mac OS X and i need to keep the machine running 24/7 in order to have my website online.
Is there a way to run Mac OS X as a virtual machine on a Mac OS X host? My Mac OS X system is configured as a server for my home network. It provides mail, DNS, and DHCP services to other systems on my home network. Occasionally, I need to establish an IPsec VPN connection to work from the Mac OS X system. When I do this mail, DNS, and DHCP are not available. Are there any options aside from purchasing another system to be the server for my home network?
I have a machine running OS X Server v10.4.11, and I'm trying to export some NFS mounts. I have the intended shared directory (a folder called NetBackups on a disk called xRAID L) added in Workgroup Manager, with access set to "World", but if I issue the command to another OSX machine (IP has been replaced with 0s) "sudo mount -t nfs 000.000.000.000:/Volumes/xRAID L/NetBackups test", I get an access denied error.
So I've been having a lot of internet issues since clean installing leopard. My neighbor, who works for Verizon, came over to take a look and thought I was having some DNS issues. He edited the "host" file and now my internet connection seems even worse. I found instructions online on how to edit the host file, but could someone post what the host file is actually supposed to look like in Snow Leopard since I don't know what he changed? I still have a completely clean install of SL, no 3rd party apps yet.
having a problem connecting to my built-in FTP server. I can connect to it from the macbook pro it is running on by using my IP address or my loopback address. however when I try to connect to it from another host (on the same subnet as my MBP) I can't. My MBP just doesn't respond to the connection attempts. I ran wireshark on my MBP and it shows that it doesn't respond. I can see the SYN packets coming in but no SYN/ACK packets are sent back.
Whenever i log into my terminal i noticed that i see that my hostname says unkown040ccedf8e88: ny name, is this normal? because i know that my friends MPA's have a different host name, and when i type in "hostname" on terminal, it gives me that unkown###
