OS X :: Networking - Internet Sharing Feature In Snow Leopard

Oct 24, 2009

I'm having a problem I think with the internet sharing feature in snow leopard. Here's what I'm trying to do. I have a cable modem plugged into a time capsule in another room, and I use a mac mini to connect to that via wifi. I am trying to share that internet connection with a couple of devices from the mini's ethernet port. I have the mini plugged into a dlink switch along with the other devices, but none of those devices can connect. The mini works fine, and I made sure in sys prefs I have internet sharing checked and it says from airport to ethernet. Can the mini only provide connection to one device? Should I be using something other than a switch?

OS X :: Internet Sharing On Snow Leopard

Sep 27, 2009

I've been having a few troubles sharing the internet from my MBP to my Xbox 360 lately. My university only lets us have ONE wireless card registered on the system for security reasons, or else I would just use the Xbox 360 Wi-Fi Adapter. I share the internet over an ethernet cable to my Xbox. Lately something weird has been happening, internet sharing stops working.

Not just a simple drop in the Airport connection, but the actual setting for Internet Sharing changes on it's own. My computer isn't restarting when this happens, it's random when it's still online. Usually if it drops signal from the access point it still starts working again after the signal picks up. I go into the Sharing preferences to find that the Internet Sharing check box has unchecked itself. Once I check it back and restart my Xbox 360, it works again.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Internet Sharing While Logged Out?

Mar 30, 2012

I have 2 Mac Minis (10.6.8) and a laser printer in my upstairs office, while my Cable Modem is downstairs.  I use one of the upstairs Minis to connect via wireless (to a SonicWall TZ210) and then share the connection via the Ethernet port, which is connected to a gigabit switch, along with the printer and the other Mini.

As long as the host Mini is logged into a user, the other Mini can connect to the Internet just fine.  I had to tweak the settings on the TZ210, to allow for the shared subnet on the upstairs network, but - as I said - it works just fine as long as someone is logged into the host Mini.

However, as soon as the user logs OUT of the host Mini, the client mini can't ping, nslookup, surf, or anything else.  It's like Internet Sharing has been deactivated on the host Mini.

How can I get Internet Sharing to continue to function on the Host Mini when no users are logged in?

Info:
Mac mini, Mac OS X (10.6.8), I actually have TWO of these!

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Internet Sharing Unlocks By Itself

May 8, 2012

I am using my iMac with a media player to stream movies to my TV. I configured Internet sharing and locked it, turned on Airport, configured the media player, it connects to the network and everything works fine for a startup/shutdown cycle.

But the next time I start up the media player cannot connect to the network. I check internet sharing and find it still connected but it is now unlocked. I must turn off Airport, de-select internet sharing, re-select internet sharing which brings a start dialog box, then back to Airport.

How can I keep this configuration permanently in place?

OS X :: Networking Mac And Pc Running Snow Leopard And Vista Respectively

Oct 13, 2009

i just bought my first mac three weeks ago (woohoo!) after being a long time pc user. so far i can say that i'm enjoying my iMac and learning a lot of new things. i've been lurking on this forum for a while and most of my questions have been asked and answered by other members. this is my first post and i can't seem to find an answer in this forum or anywhere for that matter.

as i've mentioned, i purchased an iMAC about three weeks ago. it came pre-installed with leopard and a snow leopard software to upgrade -- which i did. i still have my laptop running with vista and i would like to network them together. i've been researching how to do this but most of the how-to's out there are for leopard or tiger OS and xp -- where i get stuck when i have to click on 'windows sharing' box since snow leopard doesn't have that option. can someone give me a step-by-step procedure on how to network both of my computers. i would like to mention that i have a home network and both computers are connected to the internet wirelessly. also, i would like for my entire computer to share, and not just specific folders.

Networking Between Lion MBA And Snow Leopard IMac

Jun 6, 2012

Proud to announce we are about to become a 2x Mac computer household (not including 2x iPod classics and 2x iPhone4s!)This has got me thinking about how to 'network' my new MacBook air with my existing iMac.This is what I am trying to do:

Computer 1 - 2006 iMac Core2Duo 20" 3GB RAM running Snow Leopard 500Gb HDD, not far off full.

Computer 2 - 2011 MacBook Air 13" i5 4GB 256GB SSD, running Lion

1. Due to the smaller HDD on the MBA, I am thinking it would be nice if the MBA iPhoto could 'see' and store a local copy of for example the last 20 events in the 'main' iPhoto on the iMac. Alternativly, all events from 2012. I can't use iCloud on the iMac because I don't want to update the iMac to Lion (won't bore you with why). Managed to get OTA syning of iCal via iCloud using IMAP just last week which was my only really driver for getting Lion on the iMac.

2. My whole music library is 55Gb so again, this is too much space to take up of the 256GB. Clearly I have the iPod classic 120GB which I would generally have with me, but it might be nice to have a 'selection' of music from the iTunes library on the MBA. Is there a way the MBA can network to the iMac iTunes library and take for example a few auto-playlists? I use Dropbox, and I now have access to Google Drive which should cover my needs to sharing documents. I guess I could put 5GB of music on Google Drive, and point the MBA itunes library to that. Although won't this mean I have to double account for the 5GB worth of music on the iMac (5GB in itunes library, 5GB in local copy of Google drive).

Quickly spread your work out in different spaces by assigning an application to a space right from the Dock. Just right-click the Dock icon and select a space for the application. I cannot find this feature in the latest build.

As you may already know, in order to reduce the size of Snow Leopard many of the system files are stored compressed. So I looked through the Snow Leopard command line tools and found this option for ditto:

The search integration of Spotlight with TextEdit: Typing in a search term in Spotlight, then opening one of the resulting files in TextEdit, then choosing Find in TextEdit used to immediately bring up the very same search term from Spotlight, so that you wouldn't have to type the very same (potentially very long) term all over again to go straight to the spot in the file.

OS X :: Leopard Internet Sharing Network But No Connection

Nov 5, 2007

I recently did a clean install of leopard and then migrated my account back on to my MBP non-santa rosa 2.33. Now, when I attempt to internet share from my ethernet to computers using airport, they are able to see the network, connect to it, and put in the password, but internet fails to connect. I'm on a college network, but this shouldn't really matter since I currently have a network of this type working perfectly on an iMac running Tiger. The signal reads at full strength and behaves just like it should, just it doesn't allow an internet connection. No firewall is on.

OS X :: Networking - Windows 7 Desktop With File Sharing But Not Home Group On

Nov 28, 2010

I bought a Mini yesterday and am attempting (read: failing) to set up my home network. Here is what I have: Netgear WNDR3700 home network with a WPA2 wireless network. A Windows 7 (completely updated) desktop with file sharing but not home group on. I have even deactivated my windows firewall while attempting to set this up. A Mac Mini running OSX 10.4 with Windows Networking activated

I originally hoped to plug my mac mini in and, while I was quickly able to browse the web, I was less than successful in accessing my shared files that are on my windows 7 machine. I then deactivated the homegroup and simply "shared" the folders via right-clicking and sharing to all users on the network. I am unable to see the mac mini when opening up the network which was the first sign of trouble. I have all of the file sharing options on Windows 7 and Mac Mini checked (network discovery, etc.) but do not have any luck. The farthest success I have reached was I manually entered the ip of my windows 7 pc on the mac mini and while I saw the shared folders, they were empty. Note: I do have identical user accounts set up between the two computers, with the same user name and no password.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Disable Cursor Hover Feature?

Jun 13, 2012

Was wondering if there is some way to disable the auto-open cursor hover feature? (Not sure what else to call it). It's driving me nuts. It's most disfunctional with Safari--for example when I'm trying to find a specific webpage in the Histor-- if I don't keep moving the cursor constantly, whatever URL the cursor happens to be over will just open and load. Then I have to start over again. This seems to happen sometimes on the desktop as well.

OS X :: Snow Leopard Installation On MBA / Installing Using The Remote Disk Feature?

Aug 25, 2009

I purchased a copy of SL that I want to install on my MBA. I know that Leopard can be installed using the remote disk feature since my MBA doesn't have a DVD drive. problem is that I can't find anywhere saying that SL will support that function. Although I did see that the minimum system requirements require a DVD drive, but it doesn't say anything about a remote drive.

I'm sure it would be stupid if it wasn't supported, but then again you can't installed XP without the SuperDrive.

Applications :: ITunes Home Sharing And Using Import Feature?

Dec 4, 2009

I've finally got hold of a 27" iMac that works, so now comes the process of transferring over all my media. I want to use my iMac as a media hub of sorts, and so have been transferring all of my music from my MacBook using the import feature on iTunes 9's Home Sharing. I just want to know if Apple places any restrictions on the files so, for instance, if I de-authorise my Macbook and/or delete the media files from it, will the music still be accessible as normal from the iMac (since it's been coped over and is stored locally), or will it create some kind of link to the original files and shout at me if they disappear? Or would I be safer using a traditional method of transferring the data?

OS X :: Snow Leopard And File Sharing Between Mac

Dec 12, 2009

I have a small home network. Three macs all running the latest version of Snow Leopard (as of right now 10.6.2). I have my Mini acting as a file server. We do remote backups via SuperDuper to an attached HDD on the mini. So it just runs and does nothing. On the mini I have the admin account and then two "sharing" accounts. Lets call the sharing accounts 'user1' and 'user2'. I have shared one folder with 'user1' and a different folder with 'user2'. That way each user has their very own folder to put whatever file they want in there without the other user accidentally deleting or messing around with their files.

Both user account computers can connect to the Mini with no problem. The problem is that both user accounts can see and write to each other's folders. I have the permissions via "File Sharing" in System Preferences --> Sharing --> File Sharing set so that only the user and admin have read/write privileges and Everyone has no access. I know something is wrong because I have this exact setup at work and users can only see their shared folder.
