I have a MacBook Pro running OSHave been trying to create a bootable CD. Have found a number of ways on the net of doing this using Toast, BootCD, DiskCopy, etc. But every one requires the system folder from an original Mac OSXCD. 2 installation disks came with my MacBook, Install Disks 1&2. I can find a system folder, but it contains thousands of folders. I must be missing something.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have been a user of SuperDuper! for some time and understand the process of making a bootable clone of my startup drive. The other day, my bootable backup drive crashed. It was an Iomega that had been partitioned and worked fine as a bootable backup until the drive itself failed. The Iomega was a Firewire 400 drive.
When I bought a replacement, I bought a Western Digital FW 800/400, USB 2, eSata connection system. 1 TB. I partitioned it and created a bootable clone with the latest version of SuperDuper! The operation went smoothly until I tried to actually boot from the newly created clone. I could select the clone from the Startup Disk panel, but my Mac refuses to boot from it. It looks, then says, "Hmmm! I think I'll start up from the internal drive." I have another WD FW 400, USB 2.0 drive and it is bootable as well as a LaCie FW 400 that I can make bootable. Only this one drive that has no specific FW 400 port will not boot. I tried it as FW 800, no dice. I connected with the adapter cable to the FW 400 port, no joy.
I can return this WD drive for exchange. My question is should I expect the same results if I exchange it for another drive of the same type? Or is there a chance that a new drive of the same type will work?

I want to copy my iPhoto library to an external drive but I cannot find the folder on my Mac Air. When I open Finder there is no Picture folder showing so I cannot find the iPhoto library.

I want to create a BOOTABLE ISO so I can burn it to DVD and install.

So earlier after installing a windows 7 ultimate 64 bit RTM copy into bootcamp, things started acting up;
After installing some updates for 7, rebooting, it took about a minute to get the HD icons up to even choose one, and after that it was fine, except then the windows partition eventually just had a blinking cursor in the top right and stayed there.
I went into OSx, removed the 7 partition completely! my HD is one partition for Osx, but when I boot now, it takes yearsssss to just boot to osx, but if I hold option, then I instantly get a Macintosh HD (that's it) and it will go straight away.
What do I need to do? Reinstall SL? Please god no.
Partitions seem to be all messed up, maybe I will re create a windows install, and remove it again. (Xp this time)
Edit, This happened on 2 different MBP's one a 2.8 duo after I put on 7, they both take forever to boot to OSx. (With no BC partition even on)
I am trying to do clone the system only from my current hard drive to a smaller internal SSD. Tried with SuperDuper but the resulting drive was not bootable even though it had the system folder. Has anyone done this successfully?

Bad news is that the drive is about 9 yrs old and I want to make a backup before selling it to someone so they can have a bootable backup drive instead of having to re-install the whole system if the internal drive craps out.
The OS is 9.2.2. It is not classic and has no version of OS X on it t all.
How do I make a bootable clone of the whole system discs, apps an all, to an external firewire drive?
I am going to backup the main system drive though. I'm thinking shall I use Time Machine to back it up or use a 3rd party application to back it up and make it boot-able at the same time?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI created a bootable usb drive on a windows pc using windows 7 to install windows 8 preview and want to make a copy to install in virtualbox on my imac and burn to a dvd that will work on pc.
I've tried using disk utility to create an image and get a file ESD-USB.dmg, but virtualbox won't boot a dmg file.
I tried converting it in the terminal with:
hdiutil convert -format UDRO -o windows8.iso ESD-USB.dmg
but the resulting file was windows8.iso.dmg. I changed the name to windows8.iso, but even so, virtualbox complains it's unbootable.
I tried the terminal command:
dd if=/dev/disk4 of=windows8.iso
but virtualbox complained that it's not bootable.

I accidentally dropped my "Applications Folder" off my Dock when I first got my Mac and it disappeared. When I put it back by dragging the applications folder onto the Dock, instead of assuming the Applications Folder logo, it took on the logo of the first application in my Applications Folder: the Address book. Now, my desktop permanantly has the picture of the Address Book instead of the picture of the Applications Folder.
How do I fix this? ive followed other thread advice with no luck. Is there a way to re-set the Dock? Where does the logo live and how do I get it back there?
I just recently purchased a Macbook, and I created a bootable backup of the system. The macbook boots from the backup, but when I try to boot from the backup on our G5 and also our Powerbook G4 it will not work. The G5 does not even see the bootable partitions I created, and the G4 sees them, but when I select the partition to boot from, the computer just restarts and boots from the Powerbook hardrive. We are having to send the Macbook back for some small power issues, and we need a bootable backup of this sytem that works. Does this have anything to do with the fact that the Macbook is an intel based computer and the Powerbook G4 is not? Also, the macbook is running Snow Leopard, and the Powerbook is on Tiger.

Any ideas on how i can fix the green screen, with stripes.

Typically web sharing (found in the Sharing section of system prefs) allows other computers to access your "/Users/[username]/Sites/" directory. However I have MAMP installed so my local sites have to exist in the "/Applications/MAMP/htdocs" directory. Is there anyway to make the web sharing directory point to this one instead?

I'm trying to find an way to hide folders on a FAT32 file system in a Win* environment. Basically, the device I have will not show files and folders/directories in its menus if they are marked as hidden in Windows. I want to find a way to do this in OS X without having to boot in XP all the time. Anyone know how?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have been over so many settings in system preferences its making my head spin. Every time I boot my macbook that is running snow leopard it makes me log in. This is a very recent thing and I honestly didn't do anything to make it happen. When the problem first started happening it would also have the spinning thing on the bottom of the screen for about 5 seconds at the blue screen when shutting down. It doesn't do that as of lately though. If anyone knows how to stop it from making me log in every time I boot let me know. I will be checking back so if anyone wants to use ichat to log onto my computer to check settings let me know.

When I eventually upgrade to Snow Leopard, I'd ideally like to do a fresh install (I did Tiger>Leopard as an upgrade install), but I really don't want to have to go through the hassle of reinstalling all my apps afterwards. So, would the following work as a best-of-both-worlds alternative?
1. Update my backup bootable system drive image on my external FW drive
2. Wipe the drive in my MBP and do a fresh install of SL
3. Use the Migration Assistant to automagically copy all my data and apps over from the backup drive as if I was upgrading from an old Mac to a new one
On paper at least, it looks like it ought to "just work"... but I'm wondering whether or not Migration Assistant will work between a Mac and an external drive, or does it have to be between two actual Macs?
ive had a look around an only found bits an pieces relating to this but nothing really specific.i have an imac 3.06ghz, 4gb memory. less than a year old its been making some noises recently (like a downloading sound for afew seconds every so often) which happens every 30 seconds or so. this happens even when theres no programs open and im not connected to the internet!!! ive only really noticed it doing this the last month or so to be honest.
the computer has also been re-formated about a month ago as it was passed onto me from a family member, an im wondering if its got anything to do with that?is this a normal thing for macs an maybe i just havent noticed it before, or does it sound like something is wrong??
So I have an old imac running OSX 10.3.9 and recently it started making a whoosh sound randomly at will. It sounds like a whiffle ball bat missing the ball. Also for no apparent reason it started saying "you have logged in" every time I wake it up. Any clue how to make these annoying sounds go away and or what may have started them?
View 3 Replies View RelatedAfter owning my Imac for about 12 months or more now I've noticed lately that it has become much much slower. I expected it to slow down just like all computers once you have used up a fair bit of memory space but I haven't used up much at all. I've tried to avoid using up too much space on my Mac by using an external storage drive but I'm wondering if that has the opposite effect? I've got the usual apps that help the Mac to run efficiently and I've followed various threads that show how to optimize the mac so I'm assuming there isn't all that much tweaking left to do... could be wrong though. A long time ago (i'm not sure what got into me) but I downloaded the apple developer software, I don't intend on using it but i don't what the correct names of the apps are and I don't want to uninstall the wrong stuff. I have tested the speed of my Mac with and without the external memory drive but didn't find much difference, but perhaps my tests weren't entirely accurate.

I do play World of Warcraft, and I know this most likely causes the heating issue, but it only started about 2 months ago. And i bought my Mac mid-2009 and have had no problems until now.

I have a June 2010 17" 2.66 i7 UMBP. This is going to sound really silly and I do not really know how to describe it correctly, but it has begun to make lots of strange "Tapping/Clicking" noises. It happens quite regularly when the notebook is stationary but increase whenever the notebook is moved.
I am familiar with the hard drive clicking noise but this is totally different - it kind of sounds like a small metal ball-bearing inside a small, thin glass sphere knocking or clicking against it's side or like tapping a small thin glass object with something like a thin metal rod.
I am sorry for the poor description but that is the best way I can describe it & know I must sound like a complete idiot but I am not very savvy to computer issues but I hope someone can identify what these noises are if if they mean that something bad is going on.

After starting the PB up, it runs for about 5 minutes before we get a permanent spinning beach ball. When the beach ball is up, I hear what sounds like (and is coming from) the hard drive. It sounds like it's spinning either way to fast, or as if something is wrong with it. All the open programs freeze, and we do a forced shut down.Also, the first time this happened, we had a song playing in iTunes. The song would play a 2 second clip, then stop, then start, and continue to stutter.
We've tried turning the computer off, unplugging the battery and the power, but it still does this.I think it's a hard drive problem, and that we need a new hard drive. Does this sound correct?
