I am going to backup the main system drive though. I'm thinking shall I use Time Machine to back it up or use a 3rd party application to back it up and make it boot-able at the same time?
View 7 RepliesOk so i hadnt backed up my macbook pro in over a month and i backed it up yesterday and it backed up 158gig. Ok i thought because it hasnt backed up in a long time lot has changed. Well i go today to do a routine backup and it wants to do another 148 gig backup! I havnt even changed anything besides my wireless password!
View 5 Replies View RelatedWhen I eventually upgrade to Snow Leopard, I'd ideally like to do a fresh install (I did Tiger>Leopard as an upgrade install), but I really don't want to have to go through the hassle of reinstalling all my apps afterwards. So, would the following work as a best-of-both-worlds alternative?
1. Update my backup bootable system drive image on my external FW drive
2. Wipe the drive in my MBP and do a fresh install of SL
3. Use the Migration Assistant to automagically copy all my data and apps over from the backup drive as if I was upgrading from an old Mac to a new one
On paper at least, it looks like it ought to "just work"... but I'm wondering whether or not Migration Assistant will work between a Mac and an external drive, or does it have to be between two actual Macs?
I have used Time Machine to backup my data on an external hard drive with ample space for the past year. However, for the past month or so when plug in my hard drive and try to back up my files using Time Machine, it completely freezes my computer, to the point where I need to hold down the power button for 10+ seconds and completely restart. At first I thought this might be due to not enough RAM, but discovered it does this even if all other programs are closed.

Can Time Machine backup flash drives? So every time I plug it in, it backs up anything that has changed.
Just to be clear, I'm not trying to save the backups onto the flash drive, which is what a lot of people seem to want to do, but rather to backup the contents of the flash drive onto my mac.
Currently I have an automator script on the flash drive which, when I run it, copies everything into an archive on my mac. But this isn't a very ideal solution, since it copies everything even if it hasn't changed.
It's not paranoia, it's just being a computer user long enough to see damaged drives. I'd like to backup my Time machine drive, but I can't. Neither using my backup software, Chronosync, nor simply manually, just drag and drop from the origin Tima machine to the destination (time machine backup). Time machine is a backup, so I'm doing a backup of a backup. I had my time machine drive failing once, so I want to have this extra protecion.
This is the error message I get when I want to drag and drop the "Backups.backupdb" folder, which is where all my Tima machine bbackups are:
"The backup can’t be copied because the backup volume doesn’t have ownership enabled." I'm the only user, in Admin level. When I get info from the folder it says "You can only read".

Can anyone tell me how to tell Time Machine how to find an external hard drive (that is attached to myiMac) that I'd like to back up? If recoginizes it in a window for selecting a drive to back up to, but I can't seem to find any window to tell it what drives I want backed up. It backs up the internal hard drive on the iMac.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI upgraded the hard drive in my MBP (4,1 Mar '08) this weekend from a stock 5400rpm 250Gb to a 7200rpm 320Gb WD Scorpio Black. I used Time Machine to restore the system onto the new drive - via a new 1Tb external drive which I first prepped for network use via my AEBS but hooked up via FW800 to do the first backup before upgrading the hard drive. Laptop is fine - everything pretty much seems as it was - but Time Machine isn't. Every backup appears to be of the full hard drive contents (have only excluded the Parallels folder)! My otherwise empty 1Tb drive now has nearly 300Gb of backups of a 140-150Gb disk!!

3rd May was when I did the hard drive update so it was already doing the full drive backup right away, I had originally thought it was something to do with swapping out the hard drive but that's not so. I haven't been able to complete a backup since as its also incredibly slow. Left the laptop plugged in overnight and it had only completed ~30Gb in about 5-6 hours - over FW800! The drive is OK - I can copy over large files and that goes super fast as you'd expect. Ideally I'd like to keep at least the first backup from before the drive upgrade. Should I (can I?) move this onto another drive then reformat and start again?
I'm currently backing up my MB (2007) to an external USB drive using Time Machine.
I also have a 250gb external drive full of everything I need for work and my music collection. Basically I've realised that if this drive goes down I will probably not be able to do my job, and won't have anything fun to do the rest of the time either because all my stuff will be gone!
This data drive is used daily on Windows XP, 2000 and Vista machines so it's formatted in FAT or NTFS (can't remember which) that Time Machine won't back up from. So TM isn't an option.
Do any of you backup experts know if there's a piece of Mac software or a particular model of external drive that I can get to basically synchronise TWO external drives? I need to be able to back up my external data onto another external drive on a daily basis so I can sleep at night.
I have 2 macs in my house.. a macbook pro and a macbook air. I have an old dell desktop running windows 7 that has a terabyte external harddrive hoooked up to it. I want to be able to use it as a network time machine drive. Both laptops are running snow leopard. I was wondering is this possible and if so, how can I do it. Currently I am able to see the desktop and the external hardrive on my network from the macs, and I am able to drag and drop onto them, however I want to be able to use time machine.

The Apple store sales person told me that I cannot backup my installed applications nor the OS with Time Machine. I have the latest version of Leopard. Lets say my hard disk crashes. Do I have to reinstall all the apps from scratch? Is there a backup program other than Time Machine? Should I be using dd?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI just reinstalled my system on a new system drive and then used the migration assistant to transfer *only* the user accounts and not the settings or applications etc. I wanted (needed) to start relatively clean. The system after all of this is very similar to the original system (same apps, same users, mostly the same settings etc.) and I would like to continue using my old Time Machine back-up if I can, but when I start Time Machine it just wants to create a new back-up and won't recognize the older back-up. I've read up about what to do if you get a new TM disk or if your have your logic board replaced, but this situation seems different. I can't figure out what would appear different to TM about my "new" system.

View 6 Replies View Related I decided to restore to a Time Machine backup I had done a few days earlier, hoping that I would just "start" fresh. Without realizing it, I had inserted the Leopard install dvd that came with my computer, and restored to my 10.6.6 backup. I got the "You must restart your computer" error, which I found out was a result of using the Leopard disk. So, I redid the restore using a Snow Leopard installer on USB.
After this, everything appeared to be working fairly well. However, today, I've started to get system crashes quite frequently, and at times I haven't been able to properly shut down or restart. I noticed that Spotlight was indexing, and would hang at "3 hours remaining" or "estimating time left." Right now, I have created a second admin account, and I have disabled indexing. It seems to be working, at least temporarily, because I'm using it right now.
I have an external 500gb drive plugged into my brand new Time Capsule. The 500gb drive basically stores my entire library of music and my iTunes points to this external drive.
Is it possible to have time machine backup all information on the 500gb drive to the time capsule, so encase the external drive takes a dump, I don't loose my entire music library? Maybe time machine is already doing this, I am not sure.
I've upgraded to mavericks. Everything works fine except Time Machine. I want to continue using my 'old' time machine backup on an external server. When I try to reconnect I get the following message: The disk image "..." is in use Try ejecting the disk image.
I have disconnected and reconnected to the external server. This had no effect. At first glance it seems I am able to access my old backup clicking "Browse other backup disks". But the I don't get my backed up files. It's stuck at today
I would like to use FileVault to encrypt both my hard drive and time machine back up external drive. Does encryption noticeable slow down the computer.

Basically I have a 750GB hard drive in my Macbook Pro and over 300GB is taken up with 'BackUp' data. This is more than the total of everything I have on the drive other than that. Time Machine has always been setup on an external drive and when searching all files on the Macbook there is nothing for backup files so don't know where it is coming from.

I recently switched from Windows 7 to a new iMac. I connected my FreeAgent external drive and let iMac's Time Machine re-format it from windows to mac language. The backup completed, and all went well...but now there's a "Time Machine Backups" drive icon on my desktop. Does that have to be there? At first I deleted it, and the Seagate drive could no longer be recognized...so I unplugged the external drive and then plugged it back in. That did the trick, and it went back to working order. I also tried moving the backup drive icon to "Home" under "Go", and the same thing happened as when I put it in the trash. My question is, is it possible to move that drive icon from the Desktop to another place or do I just have to live with it on the Desktop?

I have removed the exclusion of MyBook so that Time Machine backs it up but so far it has refused to do so. It is happily backing up the internal drive. I have looked in the Mac OSX Leopard Missing Manual but still have no clue as to what I am missing. The initial setup (and backup) did not include MyBook until I discovered that I would have to remove it from the exclusions.

I've got 3 internal Harddrives: 1.) 250 GB (runs my OS and applications), 2.) 500 GB (where I store all my source files for my business), 3.) 750 GB (serves as the backup for Time Machine for all the files on Harddrives 1 and 2.). So I began thinking the other day. What would happen if somehow all 3 harddrives were destroyed (theft, fire, power surge, flood damage, etc.)? I would lose years worth of source files from my business (graphic and web design files mostly).
So I went and bought a 1 TB external drive today. Ideally I would like to put the external drive in another location and bring it out maybe once a week to backup the 3rd harddrive from above (the one being used for Time Machine). Does anyone have any suggestions on how to backup this harddrive...some type of program that essentially acts like Time Machine? I just basically need it to mirror my Time Machine Harddrive. I found a program named Super Duper (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/13803/superduper) not sure if anyone has had experience with it or not. I'm open to any suggestions on how to use the external harddrive to back up my Time Machine harddrive.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI got the fatal folder with with question mark and grinding sound of the hard drive when starting my 2008 Mac Pro this weekend. After some diagnostics it was obvious the Hard Drive is dead, of course its the main drive that runs the OS and all my apps. I am picking up a new drive today and was wondering the best approach to get it up and running again. Everying it is backed-up on my external drive through Time Machine. Since the drive is dead I can't use a copy cloner to the new drive. Would I install the the hardrive and start the Mac Pro to boot off the Leopard CD, intall that and then try to run the backup from Time Machine?
