OS X :: Making Disc Image To Use On Another Mac?
Feb 5, 2009I have a few programs on their original DVD discs that I want to put on another computer w/ a broken disc drive. In theory, can I create a disc image w/ the disc utility program, copy that file onto an external hard drive, and then put it on the other computer that way and have the program as workable "disc" (but it will really just be the image of the disc). On a side note, if I got a new disc drive on that computer, would I still be able to burn that file to a DVD disc in the future to create an exact replica?

Feb 25, 2009i was wondering if i did a fresh install on mac os x on my macbook pro, and installed all the apps and configured all the things, such as the dock.
then made an image file to a external drive.
would that be possible? or is it easier and more efficient to just install all the apps and such whenever i need to do a fresh install?

Apr 8, 2009i got a lenovo s10 (windows xp) and i want to make an image of the hard drive using my mac. I have no idea if this is even possible. i vaguely recall someone once telling me that if you connect any computer via firewire to a mac that you could take an image of the hd on that computer. I realize that the s10 doesn't even have firewire, but i was wondering if this was true or not.

So say I have a file "Image.DMG" on my desktop, I want to make it so that my external hard drive "becomes" Image.DMG, so when I plug it in, that's what it mounts as. Aperture :: Full Image Appears Corrupted After Loading
Jun 22, 2014My aperture library shows thumbnails of all my photos like normal, but if I try to view a Split View or Viewer view of the image, after a period of time where Aperture says it is "Loading.." in which the image still looks ok, the image snaps and then appears corrupted. It looks like the viewport is looking at random patches of video memory, showing bits and pieces of various graphics from around the system.
This only started happening very recently, but I haven't been using Aperture daily, so I can't say if it was after a recent OS X update or Aperture update.
I'm assuming my masters are just fine, so it's only an annoying bug, but it makes Aperture completely unusable for the time being, other than browsing thumbnails.

Jun 26, 2014I like to use Faces versus Names because I seem to be able to crank through it much quicker.
My flow:
1) I click a project name that has not already had faces assigned
2) I click the faces icon. Then I see the "main" part of the screen with the Faces instructions, and the section under that has the faces that need to be named. So I start naming them. There are 100s in this project.
3) Then I come across a face I only "kind of" recognize. I don't know if they are in the background in a crowd, of the focus of the photo. I need to understand the images composition so I can skip them or figure out their name. I would like to quickly just get a peek at the whole photo.
4) So I switch to the Viewer and it takes me to the first photo in that project. That's no good.
5) When I switch back to Face I also have to scroll to get back to that face.
Is there a better way to quickly see the whole photo without breaking up my workflow?

Feb 11, 2009Need some recommendations to doing full image backups of my entire hard drive.I currently use Acronis TrueImage 11 for my PC's but since i have a Macbook, i need to be able to backup both my HFSJ partition (OS X) and my NTFS boot camp partition (Vista).Acronis TI does not read HFSJ partitons and will only backup my NTFS partition.Simply put. I want to have backup images of my entire drive in the event my drive takes a dump.

Nov 23, 2008I am copying my DVD collection to the computer to be able to play on an iPod and a mac mini hooked up to the hdtv. Mainly TV shows.I have a Mac Pro with 2 DVD drives. The first one is the original drive (Pioneer DVR-111D) and the second is a Pioneer DVR-116D which I added. I intended to use this 2nd drive mainly for ripping DVDs because I knew I would have to update the firmware to get rid of riplock.
On the DVR-116D drive, I updated the firmware to remove riplock so it would not be limited to 5x read. I have not updated the firmware on the original DVR-111D drive. I am using fairmount to rip the DVD.Under OS X just ripping the DVD to the hard drive takes maybe 20-30 minutes. MacTheRipper is just as slow as is making a disk image using disk utility. I boot into Vista and use DVD Extractor and the same DVD takes 7 or 8 minutes .
Why is it so slow or is there a faster method of ripping a DVD on OS X?

Dec 21, 2008I noticed that my system stopped making system (i.e. Mac OS X) sounds for some reason. Sounds from applications are fine. I checked and unchecked the "play user interface sound effects" check box in the preference panes to no effect.

Feb 15, 2010I have been over so many settings in system preferences its making my head spin. Every time I boot my macbook that is running snow leopard it makes me log in. This is a very recent thing and I honestly didn't do anything to make it happen. When the problem first started happening it would also have the spinning thing on the bottom of the screen for about 5 seconds at the blue screen when shutting down. It doesn't do that as of lately though. If anyone knows how to stop it from making me log in every time I boot let me know. I will be checking back so if anyone wants to use ichat to log onto my computer to check settings let me know.

Have found a number of ways on the net of doing this using Toast, BootCD, DiskCopy, etc. But every one requires the system folder from an original Mac OSXCD. 2 installation disks came with my MacBook, Install Disks 1&2. I can find a system folder, but it contains thousands of folders. I must be missing something.

IMac :: System Making Strange Noises / Noise Comes After 30 Seconds
Dec 27, 2010ive had a look around an only found bits an pieces relating to this but nothing really specific.i have an imac 3.06ghz, 4gb memory. less than a year old its been making some noises recently (like a downloading sound for afew seconds every so often) which happens every 30 seconds or so. this happens even when theres no programs open and im not connected to the internet!!! ive only really noticed it doing this the last month or so to be honest.
the computer has also been re-formated about a month ago as it was passed onto me from a family member, an im wondering if its got anything to do with that?is this a normal thing for macs an maybe i just havent noticed it before, or does it sound like something is wrong??
IMac :: System Started Making Whoosh Sound Randomly

Jun 19, 2010After owning my Imac for about 12 months or more now I've noticed lately that it has become much much slower. I expected it to slow down just like all computers once you have used up a fair bit of memory space but I haven't used up much at all. I've tried to avoid using up too much space on my Mac by using an external storage drive but I'm wondering if that has the opposite effect? I've got the usual apps that help the Mac to run efficiently and I've followed various threads that show how to optimize the mac so I'm assuming there isn't all that much tweaking left to do... could be wrong though. A long time ago (i'm not sure what got into me) but I downloaded the apple developer software, I don't intend on using it but i don't what the correct names of the apps are and I don't want to uninstall the wrong stuff. I have tested the speed of my Mac with and without the external memory drive but didn't find much difference, but perhaps my tests weren't entirely accurate.

Apr 30, 2012I work in a John Lewis shop in the UK, I've set one of our display imac's up to have all the demo content installed for Mac OS X Lion. But id rather not go around each machine and install everything again manually. What would you advise is the best way to create a system image that i can just install onto each of the other machines to the exact same state I have the one i've already done?
Is is best to clone the drive using carbon copy cloner? then just use system restore option from disk utilities? Will this work with the fact the macs have all different seriel numbers etc?

Dec 25, 2010I have a June 2010 17" 2.66 i7 UMBP. This is going to sound really silly and I do not really know how to describe it correctly, but it has begun to make lots of strange "Tapping/Clicking" noises. It happens quite regularly when the notebook is stationary but increase whenever the notebook is moved.
I am familiar with the hard drive clicking noise but this is totally different - it kind of sounds like a small metal ball-bearing inside a small, thin glass sphere knocking or clicking against it's side or like tapping a small thin glass object with something like a thin metal rod.
I am sorry for the poor description but that is the best way I can describe it & know I must sound like a complete idiot but I am not very savvy to computer issues but I hope someone can identify what these noises are if if they mean that something bad is going on.
PowerPC :: System Making Weird Noises / Permanent Spinning Beach Ball?
Apr 14, 2007 1.33 Ghz) has started acting up, and while I think I know what the problem is, I'd like some confirmation.The symptoms:
After starting the PB up, it runs for about 5 minutes before we get a permanent spinning beach ball. When the beach ball is up, I hear what sounds like (and is coming from) the hard drive. It sounds like it's spinning either way to fast, or as if something is wrong with it. All the open programs freeze, and we do a forced shut down.Also, the first time this happened, we had a song playing in iTunes. The song would play a 2 second clip, then stop, then start, and continue to stutter.
We've tried turning the computer off, unplugging the battery and the power, but it still does this.I think it's a hard drive problem, and that we need a new hard drive. Does this sound correct?
MacBook Air :: System Making A Strange Noise / Loud High Pitch Whine
Jun 18, 2008Hey guys, got a little issue here. I have had a MBA since about march of this year. Just recently I on two occasions the computer has all of a sudden had this loud high pitch whine. It has only happened twice and at both times (if I remember the 1st time correctly) I wasn't really doing anything on the computer. Today specifically it was just sitting idle on my desk. Not sure where its coming from maybe speakers? Any idea to what this is? Should I be setting up an appointment to see a Mac Genius?

Jul 12, 2006I have a Rev A 12 inch Powerbook - 867 mHz, 640 RAM, 40 GB hard drive. The machine's always been reliable and has performed great over the years. I bought it the last week of July, 2003.
Yesterday, the Pbook was shut down, and I press the on button so it would boot up. Almost immediately, the hard drive makes a loud, whirring noise. The computer advances to the gray screen with the Apple logo, but it doesn't get past that point and the noise continues, as if it's a car engine that just won't start...
I'm going to take it to my local Apple Store in the morning, and hopefully the data, including my nearly 22 GB of music, can be saved. Any thoughts on how to get my computer working again? By the way, it's the original hard drive installed. Hopefully this is enough info to generate some ideas, I'm stumped.
