Mac Pro :: How To Eject A Phantom Shared Disk Drive

Apr 11, 2012

I had a shared disk mounted on my Mac Pro.This drive was removed from the network without dismounting. Now the missing drive shows up under the DEVICES/SHARED tab on the Finder screen. It can't be moved to the trash. Rebooting doesn't help.

Intel Mac :: Can't Eject Phantom Drive?

May 2, 2012

I have a portable drive  that I plugged into my imac (2010, OS 10.6.8) and as it was starting up and being found by the imac, the usb cable slipped out so the drive was not properly dismounted, but a file remained on my desktop. I cannot delete or eject this 0Kb file. I tried to rename the file and got an error code -8058. I cannot move the file.

fyi, I replugged in the portable drive and it shows up separately (I've since renamed it) and works fine. When I eject it, the other file still remains.

MacBook Pro :: Disk Drive Won't Read Or Eject

Jun 4, 2012

I put a cd in the slot drive to burn to my itunes. At first it seemed to behave as normal, it sucked the disk in, made noise, all that good stuff. Well I went to itunes to find the disk and it didn't show. It didn't show up in finder either. I decided to eject and try again, but the disk wouldn't eject. Since then there's been no noises from the drive. It seems like the drive just died, like it's not even trying to start up or work. The cd is literally a week old, and has been in my car cd player since I bought it, so I know the disk is clean. Also, I used the drive a week or two ago to burn several disks and had no problems with it. All my software is up to date and it reads the drive as being there, it just doesn't work.

I've spent a few hours troubleshooting this. Like I said, the computer doesn't even seem to realize there's a disk in the drive. I've tried restarting while  holding down the mouse (well, trackpad actually), repairing permissions, blowing in compressed air, tried ejecting with terminal, gravity, resetting the SMC, and probably a couple other things I'm forgetting.

Intel Mac :: Super-drive Unable To Eject Disk?

May 13, 2012

I have a iMac (iMac7,1) Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz that is 5 years old.  The MATSHITADVD-R UJ-875 (DB09) Superdrive has been replaced once already.  It is malfucntioning again.  I was wondering if there were any troubleshooting steps I could take that I am unaware of before I replace the drive.

It seems to be a mechanical issue.  The drive attempts to eject a disk - it sound like the disk is ejecting, yet it cannot.  It keeps attempting to eject the disk over and over again.  It has happened with a number of different disks, often after some time the disk will eventually eject. This time this one seems to be stuck for good. [URL]

Desktops :: Unable To Eject Disk Form Drive On Imac?

Sep 2, 2010

I'm using a desktop IMac 15" and have come up against a problem I can't solve. I selected the disk drive as the start-up drive. Put the wrong disk in the drive and it is unable to start the comp. Now I have a blank screen and cannot eject the disk.

This is the first MAC I've ever had that does not have manual ejection for the disk drive.

What can I do short of ripping the cases apart?

Software :: Can't Eject Disk Images And No Right Click Eject Option?

Mar 3, 2008

I've been having problem with either Firefox or Safari and I download something and the dmg extracts and I'm left with the white casing shell where the app is housed and it won't eject. I can't eject it from finder but dumping it to the trash from finder took it off the sidebar. I can't get them off my desktop unless I restart my Mac.

I've noticed now that along with disk images not mounting for me anymore. My external drive images or DVD's won't eject either.

When I use right click with Mighty Mouse I don't even see an option anymore to eject that image. Is there any solution out there to fix this glitch? The work around I'm using is unmounting or ejecting images or disks from Disk Utility.

Why is this happening and how do I fix it? I'm using Leopard 10.5.2 and am on an intel iMac.

OS X :: Unable To Read / Write / Eject Shared Network Volume?

Jul 24, 2008

I have my iMac and PC connected to each other through the ethernet. The iMac is set to read/write the shared network volumes on my PC. The Finder is used to set up the SMB connection. Everything works fine. Mac applications are able to read and write files to the PC.

However, after a day or so (during which the PC has been kept on, while the Mac has slept) problems occur. It seems as if it is possible to access the network volumes and even view the root directory. However, clicking on any directory will show a blank directory.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: "Phantom" Accounts On Second Drive Wreaking Havoc With The Main Drive!

May 2, 2012

I recently bought a new hard drive for my 2006 MacPro, intending to use it as a new startup disk. Trouble is, the drive it replaced, a 2TB drive has too much info I want to keep to move it out and reformat.  So I figured if I deleted all of the old system files I'd be ok. Since then I've been plagued with problems, mostly permissions changing in the core services folders.  There are other minor issues as well, like my apple keyboard function keys not doing what they're supposed to, and if I accidentally hit the eject button in the menu bar I get the beachball of death, with no way to force quit.

I have done everything I could, and a lot of research, and I stumbled upon the answer.  In the startup disk utility "Reset password' I noted that the admin account, and user account from the old drive were still being recognized as existing.  So basically it's like my computer is having an identity crisis!

I've been searching for a way to get rid of those phantom accounts, and my best lead turned up some apparent glitch in Leopard regarding old accounts.  But how to get rid of them? It would be very difficult for me to safely backup the sheer amount of data on that drive in order to reformat, but I can't seem to find how to rid myself of these accounts.  I tried logging in as the root user, but didn't see any tell-tale files on that drive.

Hardware :: AirPort Extreme Password In XP For Shared Disk?

Nov 18, 2009

I just configured a shared USB disk in my Airport Extreme. My Mac can see it no problem, but when I try to access it from an XP machine it asks for a user/password. I have set the disk protection to "Airport Extreme password". As far as I know, there is only a password for it, but no user name or account related to it. Windows insists in asking for the user name, and I can't leave it blank. I tried putting the Airport Extreme name as the user name, but it doesn't work either.

OS X :: Mac Mini Can Eject Disk, But Can't?

Aug 4, 2009

I have a mac mini and i tried getting boot camp up and running.

i was looking through our cd's and i found one that said windows xp installation and system restore disk. thinking this is what i needed, i put it in my mac when it said to insert the cd. then it restarted and went to a black screen (like pc's do when they start up) and it said,Gateway couldn't find an operating system to restore, press R to restore

I cant press anything else and when i press R, nothing happens.

if i unplug it or hold down the power button and turn it back on, it goes to the white apple screen (just before you see the apple logo) and then back to the black system restore screen. if i could get to the desktop i could eject the disk. but i cant.

OS X :: My Mac Installer / Disk Wont Eject

Jul 15, 2008

By accident I inserted the Installation disk for the Mac OS X software even though it is already installed into my laptop. I tried ejecting the disk but the eject button would not do anything. I also attempted to hold down the track button while restarting my computer which did eject the disk but resulted in a bunch of small symbols flashing in the middle of my screen so I inserted the disk again. I really don't want to risk losing any of my files by re-installing the Mac OS software so I don't know how to quit the installation process.
