OS X :: IPhoto Launches On Startup - Progress Bar Never Complete
Nov 27, 2008
For some reason, iPhoto now launches whenever I start my iMac. How on earth do I stop it? Also, since checking out the international character palette, there's a little British flag on my menu bar which I cannot get rid of. Also (while I'm here!) why does the blue progress bar never complete on my mosaic screen-saver: it's always there in the middle of the mosaic, about 95% complete?

I got a bit of an annoying issue with VMWare 3.1. Every time I launch the program it automatically launches the virtual machine I set up. It is annoying because sometimes I launch it on accident and then I have to wait for the VM to fully power up and then shut it down. I am also thinking it would be annoying in the future once I install a few more OS's on there (I assume it might start the first one on the list automatically which might not be the one I want to use).
How can I get it to go into the menu of the program and let me pick which VM I want to launch (if any at all)?
I have looked everywhere in preferences and I did not see any settings for this.

I read somewhere, but cannot find it now, that the 10.7.4. update allows you to turn off the automatic launch of all applictions that were running when you shut down or restarted. Where is that toggle? I cannot find it.

I have been using Hotspot Shield for a few years now, but the most recent update is for some reason causing it to automatically launch at startup (it has the Hotspot Shield logo in the menu bar).
I have tried looking at the the Startup Items list in System Preferences and looking at the preferences within the application itself. I cannot seem to figure out how to prevent it from launching automatically.

I called in and asked about a slowly running computer and Applecare suggested holding Option+Control+Shift+Power Button for 5-10 seconds and then releasing and then hold the shift button while powering on to go into safe mode. I did this on my macbook pro as he told me and decided to go ahead and do it on my IMac and mac pro as well. It worked on the MBP and IMac but on the Mac Pro the computer came on when I held the first key combo and is taking a really long time (hours) to start up. I need the computer to work, for work. I tried just restarting the computer, unplugging it, etc but each time it has the gray progress bar and takes a really long time. Of course I downloaded and updated to the newest operating system through mac app store so I don't have a start up disc...

Went to the Apple store, explained my problem and they brought out a new iMac for me. Did a retail swap instead of going through the Genuis Bar. I'm so happy =) =) Got a brand new iMac. This time, I disk Disk Check right away, and it says hard drive appears to be OK. No grey progress bar anymore! The problem was probably b/c the hard drive was defective. It had nothing to do with the unsafe shutdown, or pressing shift, etc...
I have a iMac 27'.. Purchased it 2 weeks ago.
I think I did an unsafe shutdown.. Or I pressed "shift" while booting, or something.. Idk and I also have WinXP installed on BootCamp. However for some reason now every time I startup my Mac, it loads with the grey Apple horizontal progress bar with a little loading animation on top. It's so annoying. This didn't happen after no firmware upgrade or anything. And I don't have any extra hard drives attached. Nothing. Everything is fine. Everything used to work. Even with BootCamp before. I think this happened after an unsafe shutdown or something. And also, my Mac has over 500GB free space still, so that's not an issue.
The progress bar at startup Takes 5-6 min extra to boot up. After it, the Mac OS X loads and everything is fine but that's not what my problem is. My problem is why should I be getting the stupid progress bar EVERYTHING I load my Mac?
I tried booting with installation disk, then going to Disk Utility but NOTHING. I click repair, and after 5 mins some error pops up saying backup your files when you can then reformat the disk.
Oh btw, Anytime I click Repair Disk it goes, then says: Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required. And after that it says: "Disk Utility stopped repairing "MY DISK NAME HERE". Disk Utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backend-up files.
Maybe the hard drive is damaged or defective.

Today when I turned on my MacBook Pro (Mid 2010 model) , the apple logo appeared as normal, but then the spinning gear and a progress bar appeared under it. Now everytime in turn my computer on, this progress bar will appear, get to about the 2/3 mark and then the computer will abruptly turn off. I have read articles about this saying that I have to format my hard drive. I want to know if there is a way to fix this problem with out having to format my hard drive.

I forgot to switch on the power socket at the wall so when I came back it had powered off. When I switched it back on it showed the last screen visible before sleep mode kicked in and then showed the apple logo with a progress bar underneath. The progress bar starts to move slowly but after about a minute starts again. It slowly starts to move again but stops after about two minutes and the macbook powers off.

I just bought a new 27" iMac and when I start it up I get a white progress bar under the apple logo. When it does come up, iTunes will not play and sometimes the computer will not recognize the magic mouse or my WiFi. Everything works fine after I re-start.

After restarting my MacBook pro for updates, I clicked on my user icon which read 'update needed'. After entering my password it began to install the updates, but the progress bar just stopped halfway through, and 2 hours later it hadn't moved. I then switched off my mac and tried again and again but the same thing keeps happening.

Time machine failed in progress as my hard drive failed. I have an "in progress" file on my external harddrive that is about 160 GB. I would like to try and load this back onto a new harddrive. Migration assistant is not responsive nor does Time Machine recognize the external drive when connected.

Hi all, I have two Powerbook G4 laptops. Both have very similar problems. When I try to start up, the grey screen with the apple and spinning wheel appears, but I can't get beyond that. If I walk away for an hour, when I come back there will still be a grey screen with apple and spinning wheel.
I admit I know little about this sort of thing, so I began poking around online for solutions. I tried Tech Tool Deluxe. Inserted the disk and held down "C," but again it never progressed beyond the grey screen with apple and spinning wheel. Most frustrating. Is there any other way of running the disk with the laptop?
Entering the terminal yielded slightly different results on each machine.
Powerbook #1: Once in terminal I typed...
/sbin/fsck -fy
...response was...
disk0s10: I/O error.
Invalid Key Length
(4, 44890)
** Volume check failed
...tried /sbin/fsck -fy over and over, always received the same results.
Powerbook #2: Once in terminal, this appears...
jnl: update_fs_block: failed to update block 1073777488 (ret 5)
jnl: journal_open: Error replaying the journal!
hfs: early jnl init: failed to open/create the journal (retval 0)
...and it won't even let me type /sbin/fsck -fy.
I tried plugging both latops into my desktop in target mode. In both cases the target icon appeared on the laptop screen but the hard drive icon never appeared on the desktop screen. I would love to at least retrieve a few files off each machine, if nothing else.

I usually connect my iPad as soon as I've heard the startup chimes, but since upgrading to Yosemite, whenever the iPad is connected, iPhoto opens. Usually, nothing will open until all my extension things like Dropbox are happy, but iPhoto somehow manages to kick off. Now, I don't like iPhoto. I don't understand it and it rarely does anything I want it to, so I don't often use it and I particularly do not want it to open, slowing up starting and serving no purpose.Â

Ive recently had to repair my startup disc volume/reinstall Tiger and now my iPod doesnt store songs after I sync it. All of my music is in iTunes and everything else seems to be working however once I disconnect my iPod NOTHING is there.
Ive been looking through all the previous discussions but cant seem to fix this on my own. And Im not even sure if I should be posting this question on here or in another forum...because Ive also noticed that there are no pictures in iPhoto .when I did the repair...it asked me if I wanted to save a copy of the previous system which I did.

I'd set up Safari for my son under his own profile and it was working great with Parental Controls. When I went in one day to update his allowed sites, Safari launched but wouldn't open a window. I could access preferences, reset, etc., but it wouldn't open a new window and when I tried to open a tab, it loaded at the bottom of the screen for a split second and then crashed. I've deleted all the safari files, re-installed, downgraded - the downgrade worked but the Parental Controls didnt work. Now what? None of the other Parental Control apps I've tried work as well as Safari's.  Date/Time: 2012-04-29 13:32:29.593 -0700OS Version: 10.4.11 (Build 8S165)

Each time I launch Safari, iTunes launches. A clue: iTunes immediately goes to the store and brings up an app called SendStuffNow. This is a real pain. At one point I had downloaded the (free) app, but decided I didn't want it and deleted it.

I have tried deleting my preferences, fixing permissions, removing plugins from Library/Quicktime.

Exactly the same issue on Macbook Air and new iMac both running Safari 5.1 and Lion 10.7.3Â
When I open Safari it does not open a page, it just shows a spinning beach ball and shortly after the fans kick in and the activity monitor shows 1 webprocess at 99 - 100% or sometimes 2 web processes at 50/50% all coming from the User. When I inspect the process it says it's "Parent Process (Safari 450)"Â
When I quit safari the web processes stay at 100% and will only stop when I quit them in activity monitor. I have reset Safari but no joy. Firefox etc works fine. The only update I ran was a 1Password update but they say it's not them.Â

Just recently Finder has stopped behaving as it normally would. Clicking the icon doesn't seem to launch the finder window. I have to right click the finder icon and then click New Finder Window. Sometimes there is no response for sometime and then finally it does open a window. If I click finder when a window is open it does not shift focus to finder anymore.

Each time I log into Lion, Safari launches automatically. Even stranger is the fact that if I look at my history, it always goes back to the middle of May 2012. I have deleted my history each and every time too. Until last week, it not only launched Safari automatically but took the it to a site I checked back then but do not have set as my home page nor do I have it bookmarked. Last week it stopped taking me to that site but still launches Safari but no browser window is shown.

Running mid-2009 iMac with latest Mavericks 10.9.4.Â
DVD Player has been performing perfectly in Snow Leopard until this update to Mavericks.Â
I've tried resetting SMC/NVRAM. Reinstalled Mavericks 3 times. Tried dumping the plist too. That did nothing. I've re-set SMC/NVRAM...done the Permissions using Disc Utility.Â
I can get a DVD to load selecting the Recovery Mode StartUp disk. Then I reboot and the DVD plays fine using the DVD controls. But ejecting and trying it again - it won't play. Â

It doesn't matter what application I use, be it Photoshop, Safari, Chrome, InDesign... or whatever... when I go to "Save" or "Open" and get a file browser window, I get the dreaded spinning beachball. It takes at least 60 seconds or more before it stops spinning and I am then able to save, open or choose files (whatever I happen to be doing at the time).Â
I've checked my Energy Saver prefs. Nothing is set to "sleep". I've already checked disk permissions (OK). I have NO external HDs, only 2 internal factory HDs. 12 GB RAM, 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon. One day I just started having this issue and I can't figure this out. It really slows down my work when I have to "wait" a couple mins every time I want to "Open" or "Save" or "Choose" a file from the file browser window. What the heck gives here??? Please, am I missing something? I have no USB Devices attached, but I am on a network in my office.Â
