OS X :: ICal Crashes - Full Of Errors In Snow Leopard?
Sep 27, 2010
I waited a long time to upgrade my MacBook to Snow Leopard, mostly because I didn't really need any of the speed increases or other updates, and because I remained concerned about having new bugs in my system. I was always happy with Leopard and never had any issues. I finally did upgrade to SL, and iCal is giving me hell. Its tough to explain the problems that its causing. Basically, the boxes get out of alignment (see attached screenshot), then stuff disappears, sometimes will come back if I click forward a month and then back. If I do this more than one or two times, it just straight up crashes. It is incredibly frustrating. Has anyone else run into similar iCal issues? I feel like a calendar program is one of the more straightforward things Apple has to work on, so I am really surprised that out of everything, this is the biggest upgrade problem I have run into.

Loaded 10.6 last night and everything appeared to go well. However, when I opened iCal, ALL of my appointments, birthdays, events, etc. had disappeared. Unfortunately I had not backed up iCal before loading SL.
I have good SuperDuper backups of the system and I have Time Machine backups of everything, but I don't see a way to extract the appointment data from those.

How come I can run 64-bit Windows 7 on my first gen Mac Pro, but I can't run Snow Leopard as completely 64-bit (with the 64-bit kernel). What am I missing here? Is it truly a hardware limitation or is it just a software block that Apple has put on these machines?
I always thought that you couldn't run Snow Leopard 64-bit Kernel because of the EFI32. After installing Windows 7 successfully, it makes me wonder if the inability of running full 64-bit Snow Leopard is just an artificial limitation.
What's the deal? I could be completely wrong about all of this. I'm still confused about the EFI32 thing. Can someone shed some light on this?

... long time reader, first time poster!! So I'm doing it. I'm switching from PC to Mac. I've been waiting for a while now and the new MacBook Pro's have convinced me. I'm buying the 13 inch this week.
However I'm slightly worried about the upgrade to Snow Leopard in September.
My question is if I buy a new MacBook Pro this week and upgrade from the current version of Leopard to Snow Leopard will it be the EXACT same as the version of Snow Leopard that ships with new MacBooks after September?
Is the upgrade just the same as the full software version available post September? Does the upgrade it just detect if you have the previous software and installs as if it were the full? Or does it just "patch" things depending on what's different from previous versions?
I can wait till after Snow Leopard is released in September 09 if it is different to Leopard upgraded to Snow Leopard.

I have a 15" PB Aluminum 1.5ghz with 1GB of ram. Just bought off a friend and when I did a fresh erase and install of OS X 10.4, repaired permissions and rebooted I get the kernel error telling me to hold down the power button and restart. So I did this and when it restarts I get the grey apple background with a load of writing all over it. How do I try and figure out what is causing the problem. I also ran tech tool pro from the DVD and that says everything has passed such as processor, memory etc

I recently bought a new MacBook Pro with SL.
My iCal is behaing exceptionally weird. I can't resize my screen. If i change from month to week it stops showing some events, every time I hit the "Show To-Do's" Button it doesn't work and alot of other bugs that make it absolutely unusable.
I've tried re-installing it from the SL DVD, upgrading to 10.6.1 (from software update AND apple's download page), and even trying to delete all my calendars info form my library. Nothing worked.

iCal has stopped syncing using .mac and I can't use iCloud because I'm on Snow Leopard (can't upgrade yet due to Lion's lack of support of previous versions of Microsoft Office). The iCal sync option is turned on in system preferences. Has Apple changed something already in .mac to cause this?Â

After upgrading? to Snow Leopard, i found my HP 3055 Printer didn't work, nor did MS Word2008 work without crashing. I finally got through the printer issue by re-loading a driver, but after removing and re-loading Word, I still have issues. I've repaired permissions, verified the disk and I still find it crashes when calling up a file. This app is impossible to work with, so what to do next?

I finally updated my Mac from Leopard 10.5.8 to 10.6. I got all the latest updates (10.6.8) and am still transferring my apps but having trouble with Apple's Address Book and iCal. I did an export from both on my 10.5 OS then tried importing them into the respective apps under 10.6  When I try that iCal it says "nothing changed". Address Book just hangs. I still have my old 10.5 OS installation on another drive in my Mac Pro and can boot into it if necessary.

I've been syncing a number of calendars from my Mobileme account and sharing them on numerous devices and with a number of associates and family. And I'm still using OS10.6, haven't moved to Lion yet, so I can't use iCloud. Do I have to give up on sharing my iCal calendars? I don't really like using google calendars to share, but that's the only alternative i can figure out.

I just downloaded the 10a380 build of snow leopard, and burned it using disk utility to a DL DVD. The burn completed successfully and the computer recognizes it. Every time I click on Install, it opens the installer and I press continue.. it says "Finding Disks" with a blue progression bar for about 30 seconds, and then exits the installer. I even rebooted the computer, holding down option, and when it gets to the screen with different partitions, the disk ejects itself. I have bootcamp with windows 7 installed if that makes any sort of difference.

Since I hooked up a new external hard drive as a TM backup, my computer crashes constantly. And I mean constantly. I never had this problem with my previous external drive, which eventually failed.Â
If I unplug the new drive, the computer works perfectly. Having spent $$$ on a 1TB drive, I don't want to buy yet another one.Â
I did notice that the drive has USB 3.0 on the bottom ID label. I'm using USB 2.0. Does USB 3.0 require a special port because my 2007 Mac Mini doesn't have one as far as I know.Â

Whenever I make events in ical, it default creates an hour-long event. I find myself using ical's events more as a specific to-do list, so every day I would prefer these events to be "all-day." I'm getting tired having to tinker around so much whenever I make an event on a date, especially when there's multiple on every day. I've read online that apparently in 10.7(lion) that people are having the opposite problem and would prefer for events to be defaulted as a specific time frame.
I've read suggestions to open terminal and type in:
defaults write com.apple.iCal 'Default duration in minutes for new event' 15
Which brings me to my question: is there any way in the terminal to change it to automatically make events checked "all-day."

Installed Snow Leopard on my 1st gen Mac Pro and had nothing but trouble: random crashes and re-boots that have gotten so bad that now it crashes during boot up. Part way through the spinny wheel you get after the boot-up Apple logo either half the screen goes orange (!) and it crashes, or the centre of the screen corrupts and it crashes or I get the multi-lingual grey screen of death. Same happens if I boot from the Snow Leopard DVD. Pretty unhappy as you can imagine: can anyone suggest anything? I've tried re-seating the graphics card , blowing out the dust and I've rotated all the memory: makes no difference.

A few months ago I had a problem with my Macbook Pro, (late 2009 model, 15" 2.53 ghz) that many users with Snow Leopard have, the random 30 second freezes. I simply reset the PRAM and SMC and I never encountered it again. Now, out of the blue, on Sunday (yesterday), I started experiencing these hangs again, but worse. The night before I had been browsing the web and my battery went to reserve and shut down, so I plugged it in and when I awoke and turned it on I started experiencing problems. I figured I would try the same fix, and it almost seemed to make the problem worse. Now if I shut down the computer via "apple -> shut down", then turn it back on and log in etc., from the first few seconds the machine hangs. If I open a folder I get the immediate beach-ball and the machine is un-responsive for anywhere from 1 minute - 5+ minutes.
I have read a lot of fixes for this problem, but most of the people's problems resulted from using Safari or Spotlight. I strictly use Firefox and very rarely even open Safari, and I think I've used Spotlight maybe 3 times total, none in the past few months. So far the things I've tried are:
- Reset PRAM
- Reset SMC
- Run Disc Utility and verify, repair etc. (from SL install disc)
So I'm wondering right now what can I do? Its finals week right now and im in college so wiping my HD is not an option. I feel like there is just something hanging the computer but I can't find the culprit.

Windows and other SMB users can no longer connect to 10.6.8 Server Mac Mini. SMB service is "running" in Server Manager, and all settings look correct, and haven't changed since November 2011. Restarting the service doesn't fix it. I'm not a samba expert, so I don't know what to do. Googling the pdb_get_methods_reload error yields all sorts of things, but I'm hesitant to try any of them as I don't want to disrupt any of the other services.Â
Here's the log entry:Â
Process:Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â smbd [2452]
Path:Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â /usr/sbin/smbd

Or at least I can't find any clues other than repeated attempts to sign-in to a discontinued MobilMe account. The list of actions taken so far:Â Clean install and migrated user files from Time Machine back up.Installed OS10.6.8 over current OSRepair permissions from disk, zapped pram and reset smc.Ran Extended Apple Hardware Test, Drive Genius Scan Test, 6 loops of Rember (Memtest) - all passedRan Onyx Maintanance and Clean.Searched and deleted old PPC and unused Intel applications and driversUpdated current apps and drivers.Removing all connected hardware except power and ethernet cable did not stop crash. One mistake was to delete Bonjour in Safari but I'm not sure what effect that may have had. My Macbook (late 2008 aluminum unibody running Snow Leopard 10.6.8) is having a plethora of problems - Spotlight won't return any results, I can't get any .dmg files to mount, and software updates can't be installed. Many of the solutions I've found involve running Disk Utility, but every time I try to open it, it crashes.
Here's the log file I get:
