View 3 RepliesJust got a new MacPro at my office (the end-of-life'd 8 core model) and my old MacPro is going to a coworker. Can I just take the drive out of my MacPro and stick it in the new MacPro and just be off and running? I mean, i've already done it and everything seems to be running ok. The only issues I'm seeing is that my Adobe CS3 software freaked out and deactivated and TimeMachine wants to start over - won't recognize my previous backup data

View 5 Replies View RelatedA replacement to my girlfriend's pre-unibody 2.5Ghz (4,1 with the 8600GT) macbook pro is soon to arrive (thanks Applecare) and I'm really hoping I can just "hot-swap" the old (but newish) 500GB 7200 rpm HDD (bootcamp partitioned ) into the new unibody replacement. Does anybody think this will work? Will there be EFI/hardware issues?
FYI (this is due to 4 ongoing graphics/screen issues)
So I recently upgraded the RAM and installed a 7200 rpm hard drive into my powerbook 1.33. Everything went smoothly, but now after waking from sleep, the spinning wheel shows up and the computer goes unresponsive.
View 1 Replies View RelatedAnyone know of any 3rd party SSD (solid state drives) available that will fit the Air?? I was hoping to get a 32GB SSD for a good price & do the swap myself. I dont need much internal space & use my server for all my big files over 802.11n, so I cant justify paying Apple $1K just for the option of the SSD.

I can't see that there would be a problem, I just wanted a second opinion from those who are sure or who have done it. I know he doesn't have Leopard, if that matters.
My new whitebook is on order and I'm getting ready for when it arrives. The plan is to swap out the hard drive from my old whitebook (late 2006), but I'm unsure on a couple of points. My current drive is a 250g SATA with a 170g boot partition and an 80g BootCamp partition.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a first generation mac pro (Rev B I believe), and am currently having some issues with it.
If I decide to purchase a newer generation mac pro, would it be possible to jsut pull my current hard drive, put it in the new one, and have it work? I'm a photographer and work with Photoshop CS3, a 2001 version of Word:Mac and Excel:Mac, Photo Mechanic 4.51 and Transmit and Toast Titanium as the main programs I use. I can not presently find any of these install disks, so I'd like to try avoiding re-installing the software if I can avoid it.
The economy being what it is, I am trying to save money where I can...but I need my workstation to work. Right now I am already looking at replacing the Vid Card in my 1st gen mac pro, and hate thinking that purchasing another $350 ATI X1900 card from Apple is my best option. If a newer generation mac pro is better for me in the long run, it might be $2k well spent.
I had an Apple "Genius" swap a hard drive from a MacBook 13" to a MacBook Pro 13". When I got it back, the hard drive was unreadable. The "Genius" said that he did nothing wrong and the problem was that the Hitachi hard drive from the MacBook was incompatible with the new MacBook Pro. My original MacBook was purchased in May 2009 and exchanged for the MacBook Pro in July 2009. When I booted the MacBook Pro from the installer disk, and launched Disk Utilities, my internal hard drive was blank/unformatted. How could the Genius destroy my hard drive just by swapping from one MacBook to another?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a mac mini right now with a mbp on the way as a replacement... would I be able to just take out the HD from the mini and put it in the mbp or would I need to do a completely new installation?

I recently replaced the harddrive in my unibody 15" MBP. It's been acting a little strangely but the harddrive seems to be working mostly fine. Firstly, each time I start up the computer I am greeted with about 10 or 15 of these messages, and I have no idea what they mean or how to make them go away. Secondly, my iPhone is not recognised in iTunes when I plug it in. I've tried with different cords, different ports, with and without the dock, and have restarted both the computer and the phone, but to no avail. It is recognised on other computers, and shows up in System Profiler (see pic) but iTunes doesn't show any sign of it being there. Though when I plug it in, the phone does make the usual sounds and shows the charging symbol. What could "Current Required (mA): Unknown (Device has not been configured)" in System Profiler mean? Thirdly, I just restarted my laptop and now I can't use 3 or 4 finger gestures. Any fixes?
EDIT: just restarted again and gestures are working. What on earth is going on? I do still have my old harddrive sitting in an enclosure. I havent cleared it yet because I thought I may run into problems like this.
I have a 2,1 macpro that I am considering for an upgrade when the 2010 models come out. I am currently booting with an Intel G2 SSD that I would like to swap directly into the new box. I dont want to wipe and reformat it.I have done this successfully with PC/motherboard upgrades. Not sure if it will work with OSX. Will I need to make sure I have the video card driver installed, as that will be likely be different? Or are all the necessary drivers in the OSX installation?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI own a Macbook Pro 15' (early 2011) and my wife has a 17' MBP (Late 2011). She's about to go on an extended trip, and so we've talked about swapping laptops, as mine is a little more beat up already, is lighter and has a resolution that she prefers (1680 vs 1920). We've both got the high-end machines with upgraded GPUs (6750 and 6770).
To accomplish the swap, would it be possible and or advisable to simply swap harddrives between the machines? Are there any troubles that I might run into from doing this? We both have bootcamp partitions for gaming.
I am using the 13" MacBook Pro (Late 2011) with latest version of OSX Yosemite (10.10.1) 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5, 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3.
The Activity Monitor shows 7.2GB Physical Memory usedBut, it also shows virtual memory used 9GB and, SWAP memory used 38MB
This usually happens towards the end of the day and during this time, I can also hear the processor sound as if there is too much of load / processing going on.
The system also responds very slowly. So far, I haven't experienced any system hang up issues but would like to know about the resolution before I start experiencing the system hang up and other issues.
Info:
MacBook Pro (13-inch Late 2011), OS X Yosemite (10.10), upgraded to 8GB RAM
How do you change the hard drive icon picture in the top right corner to look like the macbook pro computer? I've seen this on a couple people's desktops and was just wondering how you do it. Also, how do you change the folder icon to something that looks cooler.

View 5 Replies View RelatedThis evening I joined the camp... I bought a MBP and LOVE it! So impressed, have been on it all evening and still have 3 hours battery remaining However, there is one thing REALLY bugging me. I've searched for over an hour and not got the answer I need... I want to swap the command and function buttons around... I am a web developer, and continuously use keyboard shortcuts such as copy and paste on my numerous devices. I want to be able to press function + c for copy, function + v for paste, function + t for new tab in safari etc. Basically, I want the function key to perform as the command key does!
Now, i've got as far as using keyboard "modifier keys" in preferences to switch around command and control - which is just ONE button off function :-) However, it doesn't let me switch the function of.. function
When ever i quit an app, i swap spaces to the next app I have open. Example, quit safari in space 1, auto jump to mail in space 2, quit that, itunes in space 3. Never seen this before and wondering if its some new feature of a utility I got maybe with an update or something.
View 2 Replies View RelatedDoes anyone know if I can swap a VGA Tibook LCD screen onto a DVI Titanium Powerbook? Is the higher resolution in the screen set up itself? I actually wouldn't mind at all if it would work because I actually like the lower res screens of the earlier tibooks. Just wondering if it can be done.. and I don't mean taking out the actual LCD screen itself from the Tibook case and frame, I mean actually SWAPPING the LCDs and plugging them in. I just wonder if the older LCD could be plugged into the logic board or not. It seems that they would fit the case. I'd really like a faster DVI Tibook with the lower res screen because the font sizes are larger.
View 3 Replies View RelatedSince my Safari tends to show me the spinning ball very often recently I asked myself if I could somehow optimize the way MacOsX assigns memory.
As far as I know the system creates swap files with ~80 MB in size if necessary. My question is if there is an optimum allocation size for people with 1.25 GB Ram.
i know that this may sound very crazy. I am wondering if it is possible to take everything out of a powermac g4 computer and put it into a standard atx case. i am trying to make a huge data server and need a lot of drive bays. i found 2 that i am considering: coolermaster with 11 bays or lian li huge case one other thing- is it possible to use a regular power supply or is that propriatary? I think with all of the drives i am going to put in it, i am going to need a more power.

They are both single processor machines, but I question the compatibility. I don't have the MDD machine with the 1.25 GHZ processor yet, so I can't look at them both for comparison.
Colleague and I at work are swapping desktops as I need ot run VMWare and he no longer does so I will be having his MacPro and he my PowerMac - whats the quickest way to swap? He's suggested swapping the HD's over but I dont think that will work due to the PowerPC and Intel software differences... right? If that wont work then how can we do it as painless as possible?
