This evening I joined the camp... I bought a MBP and LOVE it! So impressed, have been on it all evening and still have 3 hours battery remaining However, there is one thing REALLY bugging me. I've searched for over an hour and not got the answer I need... I want to swap the command and function buttons around... I am a web developer, and continuously use keyboard shortcuts such as copy and paste on my numerous devices. I want to be able to press function + c for copy, function + v for paste, function + t for new tab in safari etc. Basically, I want the function key to perform as the command key does!
Now, i've got as far as using keyboard "modifier keys" in preferences to switch around command and control - which is just ONE button off function :-) However, it doesn't let me switch the function of.. function
I know how in keyboard preferences to mark the check box that says "Use function keys as standard function keys," but my question is, is there a way to use a hot key to make this swap instead of having to open up system preferences, navigate to the proper pane and tab, and click the box? I have a couple programs where I absolutely need function keys to be function keys, but for general purpose use, I need the function keys to be the spiffy stuff printed on them.
Ideally I'd love for the system to look at what app was in the foreground (that is, has control of the menu bar) and recognize this app as needing access to function-function keys and make the swap for me, but I don't think this is possible at the moment, and having a hot key to change it would be the next best thing.
im trying to display "Monday | November 15" and I have "date +%A" to display the weekday, "date +%B" to display the month, and "date +%d" to display the date number.. but somethin like "date +%A | date +%B date +%d" doesnt work.. I know I can create 3 shell boxes to do this, but I rather learn for the future so how do I do this all at once?
The "Eject" button on the MBA is supposed to used when a SuperDrive is connected, to eject the CD/DVD. But to many of us who don't use the SuperDrive, that function is useless and the key is wasted. I am wondering, could we somehow set it to work with other external devices like external hdd, USB drives, etc.? i.e., instead of going right-click on the device and then selecting "Eject ABC" before unplugging, simply click the device (on desktop), then press that little Eject button on your keyboard.
Have any of you encountered a situation wherein the left and right mouse button functions seem to swap, seemingly out of their own volition? It happens to me like 10 times a day and then I have to press both mouse buttons simultaneously to take things back to normal. Maybe there is some kind of setting or unix trick to specify "Never change Left and Right Mouse Button Functions?"
So the "command" button becomes the windows button in bootcamp right? I want to disable that... is that possible? If you want to know the reason... its because when i play games like SC2, that button gets hits accidentally sometimes and it windows out and it bugs the game.... or is just annoying. Also, even better, can I change the "command" button to make it the "control" button instead?
When i hit the red x button on mac, it actually quits the application and doesn't restore any work i was doing, be it apps like pages and neither does it restore my last opened sessions on safari. However when i press command q, it should in normal cases close the application, however when i do that now it restores my previously active sessions.
In simple words both functions are working opposite to each other:
Red x- should merely 'minimise' the app and should restore previous active sessions but is not
Command w- should close the app but is instead restoring previous sessions
Running OS X 10.5.8 on a Macbook Pro that's roughly 2 years old (maybe a little more). About a week ago I noticed that I was unable to copy/paste/undo/cut. Thought it was a total command key failure at first but other shortcut functionality is intact (cmd+t/cmd+w etc). So I've isolated the problem to the left cmd key and the bottom row of my keyboard. Separately they work just fine, but they refuse to work together.
When we upgraded to 10.5 and got the new iMac (I don't know which one caused the problem) I noticed that the Command, control, alt, and shift button all act like caps lock. I use those buttons all the time, and if I accidentally press one and have no idea what it is, I am stuck trying to figure out what to do.
I have just shipped my Mac Mini to its new home and I've had reports that the panic error is appearing on boot up: "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for several seconds or press the Restart Button." This screen appears on the blue window just after the grey apple screen has disappeared and does not get as far as the desktop at the same point each time. We have tried to reinstall mac OS from the original install disk but holding the "C" Key or the "Option" Key down on restart doesn't boot from disc. Is there a way you can view the Kernel Panic log before you boot into Mac OS so we can try and pin point the source of this problem. I'm wondering if this could have been the result of the shipping that has caused some hardware to come loose.
Just got a new MacPro at my office (the end-of-life'd 8 core model) and my old MacPro is going to a coworker. Can I just take the drive out of my MacPro and stick it in the new MacPro and just be off and running? I mean, i've already done it and everything seems to be running ok. The only issues I'm seeing is that my Adobe CS3 software freaked out and deactivated and TimeMachine wants to start over - won't recognize my previous backup data
My MacBook Pro (not shut down, only slept/awoken) for the past several months, is still running strong. That part is good. However, it seems that I noticed my swap file usage was already 997MB!
I'm picking up an i5 iMac today, its power will exceed my needs for now, but I'm wondering if, down the road, its possible to swap out the CPU with an i7? Are the iMac i5 and iMac i7 identical besides the processor?
I still have the older style 2008 LED MBPs where you have to remove the top of the laptop with jewelers screwdrivers and whip out the torx screwdrivers to replace the hard drive. Ram is easy on the older laptops.
So i have two MBP's one with a small hard drive and one with a decent size. will i run into problems if i take out the larger hard drive put in the other one. then get a even larger one to replace the first.
A replacement to my girlfriend's pre-unibody 2.5Ghz (4,1 with the 8600GT) macbook pro is soon to arrive (thanks Applecare) and I'm really hoping I can just "hot-swap" the old (but newish) 500GB 7200 rpm HDD (bootcamp partitioned ) into the new unibody replacement. Does anybody think this will work? Will there be EFI/hardware issues?
FYI (this is due to 4 ongoing graphics/screen issues)
So I recently upgraded the RAM and installed a 7200 rpm hard drive into my powerbook 1.33. Everything went smoothly, but now after waking from sleep, the spinning wheel shows up and the computer goes unresponsive.
Anyone know of any 3rd party SSD (solid state drives) available that will fit the Air?? I was hoping to get a 32GB SSD for a good price & do the swap myself. I dont need much internal space & use my server for all my big files over 802.11n, so I cant justify paying Apple $1K just for the option of the SSD.
I just upgraded my 2GB ram to 4GB with Crucial sticks. I want to give my old 1GB(x2) sticks to my friend with another Macbook. He has a Macbook with 1GB installed from the factory, two 512 sticks.
I can't see that there would be a problem, I just wanted a second opinion from those who are sure or who have done it. I know he doesn't have Leopard, if that matters.
My new whitebook is on order and I'm getting ready for when it arrives. The plan is to swap out the hard drive from my old whitebook (late 2006), but I'm unsure on a couple of points. My current drive is a 250g SATA with a 170g boot partition and an 80g BootCamp partition.
I have a first generation mac pro (Rev B I believe), and am currently having some issues with it.
If I decide to purchase a newer generation mac pro, would it be possible to jsut pull my current hard drive, put it in the new one, and have it work? I'm a photographer and work with Photoshop CS3, a 2001 version of Word:Mac and Excel:Mac, Photo Mechanic 4.51 and Transmit and Toast Titanium as the main programs I use. I can not presently find any of these install disks, so I'd like to try avoiding re-installing the software if I can avoid it.
The economy being what it is, I am trying to save money where I can...but I need my workstation to work. Right now I am already looking at replacing the Vid Card in my 1st gen mac pro, and hate thinking that purchasing another $350 ATI X1900 card from Apple is my best option. If a newer generation mac pro is better for me in the long run, it might be $2k well spent.
I had an Apple "Genius" swap a hard drive from a MacBook 13" to a MacBook Pro 13". When I got it back, the hard drive was unreadable. The "Genius" said that he did nothing wrong and the problem was that the Hitachi hard drive from the MacBook was incompatible with the new MacBook Pro. My original MacBook was purchased in May 2009 and exchanged for the MacBook Pro in July 2009. When I booted the MacBook Pro from the installer disk, and launched Disk Utilities, my internal hard drive was blank/unformatted. How could the Genius destroy my hard drive just by swapping from one MacBook to another?
I have a mac mini right now with a mbp on the way as a replacement... would I be able to just take out the HD from the mini and put it in the mbp or would I need to do a completely new installation?
not sure on dependent the hardware is on the os installation...
I recently replaced the harddrive in my unibody 15" MBP. It's been acting a little strangely but the harddrive seems to be working mostly fine. Firstly, each time I start up the computer I am greeted with about 10 or 15 of these messages, and I have no idea what they mean or how to make them go away. Secondly, my iPhone is not recognised in iTunes when I plug it in. I've tried with different cords, different ports, with and without the dock, and have restarted both the computer and the phone, but to no avail. It is recognised on other computers, and shows up in System Profiler (see pic) but iTunes doesn't show any sign of it being there. Though when I plug it in, the phone does make the usual sounds and shows the charging symbol. What could "Current Required (mA): Unknown (Device has not been configured)" in System Profiler mean? Thirdly, I just restarted my laptop and now I can't use 3 or 4 finger gestures. Any fixes? EDIT: just restarted again and gestures are working. What on earth is going on? I do still have my old harddrive sitting in an enclosure. I havent cleared it yet because I thought I may run into problems like this.
I have a 2,1 macpro that I am considering for an upgrade when the 2010 models come out. I am currently booting with an Intel G2 SSD that I would like to swap directly into the new box. I dont want to wipe and reformat it.I have done this successfully with PC/motherboard upgrades. Not sure if it will work with OSX. Will I need to make sure I have the video card driver installed, as that will be likely be different? Or are all the necessary drivers in the OSX installation?
