How come external disks icon cannot be displayed on desktop of my macbook air?

The Issue is a duplicate icon of the hard drive appeared on the desktop this AM upon startup.
I don't know what caused it. It just appeared.
It seems to contain everything the start up icon contains when I open it.
I moved it to the trash, but did not erase the trash. I chickened out, so to speak. I removed back to the desktop.
I have the desktop view set to arrange by date modified. It appears approximately half way down the list of icons showing on the desktop. It seems to me that, if it is a duplicate, and by all appearances it is, then it should appear immediately after the real hard drive icon.

I am new to the forum and am new to Macs in general. My first Mac (a 350Mhz B&W G3) I bought 2 years ago and only used it a handful of times. I'm mostly a PC user. But anyhow here is the issue. I recently bought a G4 Mac Mini (1.25Ghz,512Mb,40Gb) off the bay knowing it had an issue with the USB ports. So I researched as much as possible about the problem prior to making the purchase. I'm a pretty tech savvy guy and figured it would be fun. But this has got me at my wits end. It has OS X Tiger on it and when you start it up it starts the "Welcome" in a billion languages movie, then it shows the the "Tiger getting started screen".
After that it immediately pops up with a white screen of a keyboard that says one is not connected. My keyboard for this is an Apple wired aluminum one with white keys (just bought it about 4 months ago and can confirm it WORKS). My spare keyboard is an Apple B&W G3 keyboard and also can confirm it WORKS. I have two spare mice that I use for these kind of projects. One is a wireless Logitech "Cordless Optical Mouse for Notebooks" and the other is a Microsoft wired "notebook optical mouse 3000" model 1049. So, yes I switched them around on USB ports, nothing. I tried the PMU reset about 10 times, nothing. I replaced the CR2032 battery with a fresh one, nothing. So, I got curious....I have a USB LED light meant to clip on the screen of a notebook to illuminate the keyboard. I plugged it in and guess what it works! I also have a Thermaltake USB 80mm fan sitting on my desk as a fan to cool me off, it has a rheostat on it to adjust intensity. I plugged it in and tunred it all the way up and it worked just as good as it does on my HP desktop.
So it seems it isn't a lack of power from these USB ports, it seems that maybe a controller meant to communicate with a mouse/keyboard just went deaf, dumb and blind. Am I right to assume that when you plug in a keyboard or mouse the PC/Mac sends a signal telling the peripheral to "turn on"? Cause it seems it isn't doing that. The LED light and fan don't need confirmation to turn on, they just need power....so they turn on. but my Keyboard and mouse don't do anything. I though it might have been Tiger (possibly?) so I removed the HDD and plugged in a wiped Hitachi 100Gb (2.5") and put in my Mac OS X 10.5 "Retail" disc in to see if it would change it's behavior. With the HDD blank it booted successfully into the Leopard disc and went right into the "choose main language" screen. Nothing, neither my keyboard or mouse worked at all.
I'm new to macs and haven't quit figured out what the icon on the desktop is after downloading something..the icon looks like a drive or what ever you call it.
Do you just keep those there or just eject them? Is there a way to DL items and not have that show up there each time?
Today I was preparing to get rid of my bootcamp'd windows7, change the partition size, and install XP. Well, I decided instead that I would just get a fresh OS X install, and install XP through the new bootcamp. So, I popped in my XP disc and went through the partition manager that comes with it (I don't know how to do it through mac) deleted all my partitions and installed windows so I could operate the cd-drive, and put in my OSX install disc.
(Perhaps I should mention I formatted it all to NTFS, thinking I could just reformat the whole thing with the OS X install like you can with windows). So, now I have a full NTFS partition, XP works fine. I can put in my OS X cd, restart and attempt to boot from a cd either from holding down option, or c at boot. When I try to do this, it pops up the kernel panic power icon, and gives me the "restart your computer" message. In recap my computer kernel panics on boot from cd.
Here's the question: Is this a true kernel panic, or is it due to the fact I don't have a partition available for mac to boot from? I didn't change any hardware, it was working perfectly fine prior to the -attempted- reinstall, and my XP install is working fine (minus the drivers), and after some research kernel panics tend to happen after hardware failures, in fact I had one happen a few months ago when my video card bit the dust.

For whatever reason, my Hard Drive icon has moved itself down a spot on the OS X desktop. It's the only icon on the desktop and when I put it back in the upper right corner like it was originally it stays until I reboot and then it's moved back down a "spot." Anyone run into this funny behavior?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI just switched to a Mac a few hours ago after using a PC for years. I downloaded Firefox for Mac, and it works fine. The only thing is I have a disc drive of it on my desktop, as well as an icon on the bar. I have mounted the drive and dropped the icon into the applications folder, exited Firefox completely and was successful at "ejecting" the drive so it left my desktop. The thing is, when I went back and opened Firefox, that drive thing came back and it asked me if I wanted to run the application or something like that. Is there any way I can get Firefox to open normally and run without that driver thing on the desktop.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a bunch of flash drives I need to format for work, and we want to put our company logo as the icon for each drive. We wanted to format them as MS-Dos Fat so that they'll be readable and writeable on both Mac and Windows computers. But when I format them that way and change the icon, it displays as a generic preview JPEG image instead of the real image or even the default hard drive icon.
I managed to fix it so the icon will display properly in Snow Leopard, but in Lion the drive still mounts with the generic Preview thumbnail.
Is there any way I can easily format a flash drive so that a) it will be readable and writeable on Windows and OSX machines and b) have the icon for the drive appear correctly on Lion, Snow Leopard, and windows machines?
This should be easy but I can't seem to get it!
My 3 year old keeps ejecting my drives because they exist as icons on the desktop.
I'd like to remove those drive icons from my desktop but still show them as mounted in my finder sidebar.

I don't get this. My mom's white MacBook (Intel IGP model) showed an X across the battery like it doesn't work, so I bought her a new battery for it. However, I installed the new battery and it still shows an X but it actually does work. I figured it out by accident. I thought maybe I bought a bad battery. I tripped over the magsafe and the MB stayed on... confused, I am now here. Not finding much about this.
What causes OS X to display an X across the battery icon? Doesn't this usually mean the battery is ruined? When pushing the button on the bottom of the battery, it shows five LEDs as it's fully charged and working. I unplugged it several times, and the MB stays on.
It also reduces the screen brightness and seems to go into battery power saving settings when unplugged. So how do I get OS X to see the battery? It must be charging properly as it's not hot or bulging or anything at all.
The problem is simply that it's not showing the battery information at all as though there were no battery plugged into the MacBook. But it works as though it's plugged in and all is normal?
How do you change the hard drive icon picture in the top right corner to look like the macbook pro computer? I've seen this on a couple people's desktops and was just wondering how you do it. Also, how do you change the folder icon to something that looks cooler.

Backstory: Sunday the updates window popped up so I let it run and reboot. Boot screen is stuck on the white screen with apple logo and spinning icon. None of the typical hotkeys were working like the Shift key to go to Safe Mode. I decided to resinstall Snow Leopard which went perfectly fine since I was able to boot off of the Install DVD. Everything seemed fine after the install and I had all of my previous programs and files.
It worked fine all day yesterday until I shut the lid to leave work. I got home, opened the lid and the spinning mouse icon was continuously spinning. I could move the mouse but couldn't click anything. I shut it down using the power button. Upon booting it up I did not hear the boot up sound but a white screen displayed and didn't do anything from there. I rebooted it again, inserted the Snow Leopard DVD to try and boot off of that and it won't even boot off of the DVD. None of the typical hotkeys work either, not even to eject the DVD. I do hear the DVD spinning up but it doesn't do anything; just a white screen.
I did reset the PRAM which forced it to reboot and I got the startup sound back but it still only shows a white screen. Any ideas? I forgot to purchase Apple Care last month before my 1 year warranty ran out so I'm 1.5 months out of that.
I do not have a hard drive symbol on my desktop, how do I get it there? Can't load anything without it.

My Macbook, v.10.4.11 runs great except for one thing. When I double click on my hard drive icon, the finder briefly appears then disappears (just a split second) I cannot open the hard drive folder without it immediately closing. I can access material through another program, but can't go straight to my hard drive.
