I have checked activity monitor and found a process called awacsd which was using 114% CPU and 2.27GB Memory. I did a search and found it is from MobileMe Back to My mac, (which I have disabled) but the process is still up there.
I did search, because I recalled seeing a thread on this in the past, but mostly found threads about upgrading when you run out of space. I have an 80 gig harddrive, but it's almost full. I go through my folders, and see that music is about 7 gigs, photos is about 7 gigs, applications folder is 5 gigs, documents folder is 1 gig....at most I can account for perhaps 25 gigs of data. Where is the other 40 gigs coming from? Trash is emptied. Is there some simple way to list folders based on size or something to figure out what is taking up my harddrive space?
So, like a complete idiot i downloaded a torrent file with a few thousand font files. i installed them all and it has bogged down my OS and taken over programs like Safari, firefox and entourage (which i use for email). when i change the font in the preference menu in the respective program it will change the size but not the actual font style. another strange thing is that safari will not load pictures now either.
i want to just wipe the hdd but i do not have a disc because i bought it used. i can take it back to the guy i got it from as he refurbishes macs but i was wondering if i could avoid the trip if any one has a tip or two for me.
I've just turned a .mov file into DVD using iDVD for the first time. The actual asset encoding took about 3.5 hours for 120 minutes. is that good/bad/average. Is there a faster way?
I basically want to watch stuff on a DVD player and normal screen and not my Powerbook.
I know my DVD player will play mpegs, so could I just turn the .mov files into mpegs? I don't have QT 7 Pro unfortunately but I have d/l VLC.... What can be done?
I sorta have a project in mind I'd like to attempt, but I'd actually like to know if you think it is possible. I have plenty of computer engineers and computer savy folk around here to help me with it, but i'd like to know if it seems possible before i decide to start. I have an old g3 imac... that worked until the harddrive was taken out that is... haha. I got it from some old school equipment the were getting rid of. The harddrive and ram were taken out before it came into my posession.
Anyway what I would love to do... is basically use the casing and the screen , but swap out the processor to ATLEAST a g4 as well as put in a superdrive, more ram and a bigger harddrive... Really i'd like to put new components into a g3 imac casing. It would be really great if I could get g5 parts in there but I know that's a long shot especially keeping cost low (idealy would be intel parts, btu as they are newer I know i won't be finding a good deal on any scrap pieces from those)............
I have installed Windows Vista using Boot Camp. Now my configuration is as follows: 50 GB for Mac OS X Leopard and 30 GB for Windows Vista. Now I need to install Ubuntu 8.10 by taking 10 GB out of the Mac OS X.I have googled "Triple Boot Camp" but the information does not makemuch sense for me (I have not a background in programming and therelevant jargon). Is there any simple information how to triple boot campmy Macbook ?
So I've been noticing the fans on my MBP were starting to run pretty hard today which never happens. I checked the activity monitor and I have a process called SH (127) that was eating up like 12-15% of CPU. Does anybody know what this process is? Why is it taking so much CPU horsepower?
I've had my black Macbook (early 2008) running Leopard for just over a year now, and I've had a pretty persistent problem (since November or so). A lot of different things that are even somewhat CPU intensive seem to always make my fan go crazy (up to ~6200 RPM), and a look at Activity Monitor shows that they're taking up 100% CPU. Here's a few things that sometimes make it happen:
-Finder, when I'm in a folder with video files (doesn't happen with every video, but with certain videos it always happens - Activity Monitor says Finder is running over 100% CPU and I need to relaunch it to get it to stop!)
-Flash videos in Mozilla/YouTube
-Any kind of game utilizing some amount of graphics
-Running a Windows virtual machine (sometimes)
I really doubt these things are actually that CPU intensive, so something's wrong. Any ideas?
I'm not sure if it's ok to do this but is it possible to have the system stop writing in the the system.log? It's taking up a lot of space because and I want to stop it temporarily because for some reason it keeps rewriting lines every couple seconds.
I just bought a 21.5 iMac and am having a great time. However, the iMac will not take in any discs. When I try to put it in, the iMac doesn't automatically pull it in. I tried putting it as far as I can and waiting a long time. I've even had to use a credit card to get a stuck disc out after pushing it in too far.
I Just got an iMac about 2 weeks ago, and now the HDD is full. I looked up reasons way. I was told to to give Disk Inventory X a try to see what was going on. It turns out Mail is taking up 414.8 Gigs of my 500 Gig HDD. So what can I do to stop this?
I have a 250 Gb internal Hard drive. I started running out of space so I purchased a 750 Gb external Hard Drive and moved all my picutres, videos, etc. I freed up about 35Gb of space on my internal hard drive. I also cleared out my download folder. I hardly have any files left on the computer and after a few weeks I get the hard disk running low on free space error again. I checked the available space and I have less than a Gig. I don't know what is taking up the space. I have Time Capsule and am using Time Machine. I am running Lion.
I just ordered a new Macbook Pro (with Retina Display). It's my first MBP since 2007.I'm super excited about it, minus one glaring issue. My harddrive is the baseline 251 GB SSD. I've hardly used the thing besides loading some music and movies onto it. However, when I look at the'About this Mac' window, it says I'm using 51.89GB in Other.Compared to only 11GB in Movies and 2GB in Audio. It's hard for me to believe that the operating system takes up a whopping 50GB..How can I account for this Other section?
Info: MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4), 251 GB SSD
I have 193 GB of my 249 GB memory being used by 'other'..What on earth is in here and how can I remove it ? I know its anything outside of pictures, music etc but its massive and making my machine so slow
Im on a late 2009 macbook running OS X 10.9.2 (13C64)..I've tried running Omni and this useful to a point , I can't locate anything that is so high though that would be using all this memory up.
I have about 22GB or about 23,500 items to be emptied from the trash. Most of items are just jpg images. I just started to commence emptying and it is taking approximate 1sec to delete one item. So by calculation, it will take 6.5 hrs. !
At same time, I'm just doing my normal spread sheet work.
I had a program in Windows that graphically showed different slices of files on my computer and let me drill down on folders that were using the most data. It was very helpful in trying to clean up junk. Is there an equivalent program that does the same in OS X? Freeware if possible.
Something happened to trash! It used to just say "empty" as the empty button. It now reads "empty securly" and takes way too long to empty plus it slows my laptop down. Im using a 17' macbook pro.
I know this has been asked before and I asked it once too, but I don't understand all these technical terms and nothing I did worked. I've now got over 20GB in this "private" folder as I saw in Disc Inventory X. I cannot find this folder anywhere when I search and I cannot delete it.
OS X 10.5.6, it's a .sparsebundle file. Total capacity 30GB, taking up 30GB on disk. There are only 10GB of files on the image. Trash is empty. I've zeroed my hard drive, and the disk image, and checked Whatsize.
Recently my iMac has been booting really slow and I've run out of ideas to fix it. So far I've used Onyx to tune everything up, repaired permissions, repaired disk using the disk utility (no errors came up), and I've cleared PRAM. I have XP as a partition using Boot Camp. Its starting to get really annoying.
my Macbook that is in my signature is currently saying that it will take ten hours to charge (See Pic) after charging for the first time in two weeks after coming back from a camp and I'm not sure what to do.
Is there any reason I can't just take my old hard drive out of my macbook, put it in a hard drive enclosure, and open it on my macbook (with the new hard drive in), and retrieve everything by using Time Machine? Or will my files at least be there on the hard drive to drag to applications/settings (for me to manually restore everything)?
I'm in my first year of college, this is my first MacBook. And I'm looking for an application that others would recommend for note taking. I tried a trial version of Notebook, and I like the set up, but I can't figure out how to skip lines with it. It's frustrating. I want something that is a little more than just taking notes in Pages or TextEditor.
I had codes for a movie to get from the itunes store. I started downloading them yesterday for 1 movie and the extras to that movie and it needed 20+ hrs for it to finish. Is that normal? I got 7 hrs to go with one download completed. I have a macbook pro if that matters.
Just recently my iMac has been taking over 20 seconds to go to sleep after I press the button. I don't know if I have a virus or malware, but it is taking a lot longer then it used, which was instantly
Just recently my MacBook (10.6.2) has started to take around a minute to shut down instead of about 2 seconds like it always has done. It displays a lightish blue screen with the loading symbol as seen below the apple logo when starting up any machine. The only thing I have done differently recently is started using an external monitor and kb/mouse. Although I have disconnected all of these and it still does it.
media event the MBP was not even mentioned. It was pretty much the new release of the iPad. The MacBook Pro released June 08, 2009. Obviously we can see that it has been over 6 months, and down to be an update.
