OS X :: Applications Keep Disappearing / Unable To View Apps

About 3 weeks ago, I went out of town for a week then came back. When I started up my PPC G5 iMac, I went to open Safari....but it disappeared. The icon was still in the dock, but when I clicked on it, a translucent "?" showed up over it. I tried a Spotlight search for it, and nothing came up. Same thing happened with Preview. I thought my Aunt who was staying over didn't know how to use the Mac and might have accidentally deleted them, so I used Pacifist to reinstall Safari and Preview from the Leopard disc. No big deal.
Then today, I fire up Word, but same thing! Word disappeared! Same with Excel. No matter, reinstalled from the disc. After a couple of hours, I'm back again and this time I want to use Roxio Toast....gone. And this time, I don't have any install disc (lost it during moving). And I know my Aunt can't be responsible for Toast or Word disappearing, since she left yesterday afternoon; mom was using Word on my computer and I used Toast no more than 5 days ago.
So anyone have any clue what the heck is going on with my applications literally deleting themselves?

Earlier tonight I opened iCal, only to find that none of my calendars were there. it was completely empty. However, when I changed the view from "Week" to "Month" all of my events were listed (in the proper color) on the appropriate day, but I still had no list of calendars on the left. Subsequent changes between "Day" "Week" and "Month" view continued to display the events properly, but nothing showed up in the calendar menu on the left.
I repaired permissions same thing happened.I trashed com.apple.ical pref (forgot the exact filename)�same behavior. I use .mac to sync between computers, and I use Missing Sync to sync to a Palm T|X.

My doc disappears every few minutes than reappears suddenly. I have no idea why this is happening. When the doc disappears from the bottom of my desktop I cannot downsize anything until it reappears. Very frustrating! I tried to find something in system preferences but couldn�t. Has anyone else out there had this happen? I�m running 10.2.4.

I am running OS 10.4.8 and use mysnc to sync calendars and address book between my notebook and G5 desktop. Everything was working fine, but now my calendars keep disappearing, even though the data is still there (when I open iCal, i see the calendars, and then they disappear after a few moments and any alarm that I set will pop up the way it was supposed to).

I noticed that finder is not displaying all files when I look at folders with lots of files in "icon view" mode but they do show up in "list view" Same thing happened with the computer at work. I'm using OS X Leopard on both.

Maybe I am missing a setting somewhere but the wee triangles alongside folders in list view randomly disappear. To see what is inside a folder, therefore I have to double-click (which kind of defeats the idea of list view methinks!)

I have iTunes 9.0.2 and when I first upgraded to 9 I was able to view my Homescreen from the Applications tab and rearrange my apps. Lately all I've been seeing in the Applications tab is a list of my apps with check/uncheck marks next to them. The Homescreen view that should be right next to that is simply not there. Any ideas on what to do (besides reinstalling iTunes)?

I have a security camera system at work & i need to pull video from it and view it on my MBP. The file it gives me when I output from the machine is an .arv, (which I have never heard of) but I cannot seem to find software (preferably freeware?) to read it. The system gives me a viewer ("DVR Viewer"), but it is an .exe, so it won't run on my system.

I'm running Parallels with a Ubuntu VM to test my new NAS computer, but I can't seem to view the Ubuntu services with other computers on my network. Is there a setting or something that I can change that enables Parallels to share services across the network? Right now I'm limited to seeing services from Ubuntu with OS X on my MacBook running the VM.

Select Shuffle Mode. Pause your music, or make sure nothing is playing, then go to Minimize view.
Now hit FFW or REV. What appears in the track info box? Nothing, right? iTunes doesn't show you what song it has shuffled to. It only works if you are playing, not in pause.
Surely this is wrong? Sometimes you want to select song before playing it, right? This works fine on my Ipod. Everyone else have this problem?

A friend recently downloaded 500 messages from her ISP to Mac Mail (4.4) The inbox says she has 500 messages but she can only see around 150 / 200. How can she see that complete list ? I'm trying to convince her to remove those messages off her ISP's server.

I cant figure out where the downloads are going. In Safari Preferences, it's set to have the downloads go inside Finder in a folder called "Downloads," but the only thing in there is a GIF I downloaded. I searched in the Documents folder, but the downloads are not there either.

Ok I have been trying to find the reason why this is happening. I am having an issue with the icons disappearing, the file is still there and you can click on it if you click on the words, but the icon is not there just the icon is gone. The icon that is not showing up is the folder icon primarily. I have searched several different sites and can not find an answer to my problem. I have tried to do the equivalent of a (rebuild desktop) desktop reset which was a program I downloaded from apple: URL
It did not help either and after installing that and doing the reset. Now when I go to open a picture, it opens in color sync instead of preview. The only way I can open a picture in preview is to open preview and then open a picture through it. It is like color sync is the default for some reason. Does someone know how to fix this? But my main concern is tis icon issue I am having. I don't know what to do as it is making it very hard to work. This even carries over to my external drives when hooked up. I need help as I do not know why it is doing this. : (
As far as other information, I just installed Tiger a few months ago if that helps any and this is on a mac mini. Other than that everything has been the same. I have relaunched the finder through opt+cmd+esc but it is not available to relaunch through right clicking the icon on the dock. Also it no longer allows me to drag a picture file over a program like Photoshop in the dock to open it in Photoshop. What is going on here? This getting crazy!!

I listen to and watch a lot of podcasts. Quite often, after I am done listening to a Audio Podcast I will watch a video podcast. Some times it gets stuck and won't play the video but plays audio fine. Anyone else have this problem?

I'm looking for a way to keep distraction to a minimum when working. I'd like to have an app (or a setting) that enables me to automatically hide any apps that I switch out of. Are there any apps or hidden settings within OS X out there that would solve this issue for me? I know about Spirited Away, but it doesn't work for me and hasn't been updated in a while.
I'm running OS X v10.6.1.

I have replied to another thread, with this same question, but I wasn't getting a response. So I will ask in a new thread On the iTunes Plus Upgrade page in iTunes, where it shows your total cost, and total songs. Mine was showing $45, and around 145 total songs. Now for last few days it has been less than before. It has been showing $43, and 139 total songs for last few days. Why would songs be disappearing from the Upgrade Page? Has this happened to anyone else?

I use Apple's Mail program and also my school's webmail (outlook) in conjunction to check my school email. However, for some strange reason, my inbox on outlook site will only hold up to 2 weeks of mail. My inbox in Mail will still be intact, yet for the life of me, I can't figure out why my webmail inbox is disappearing. I've checked every possible setting on outlook website to no avail. I've also checked Mail's settings, but haven't seen anything as far as deleting older mail. We're allowed 25 gigs on outlook site so they shouldn't be deleting them automatically.

I lost a folder of images that I had to rescue via Time Machine. I thought I got the clumsies, and deleted them by mistake. But checking this morning, My "Bob apps" where I keep apps not in the application folder, apps where missing peacemeal in each folder.
I check images again, and files were randomly missing here and there, same with mp3s. I'm suffering from blurry icons, and the random, auto shutdown that various users are experimenting with their Macs. why the random self deletion?

like i had a folder full of images and then later on i only have a few left? and my textedit and vlc player disappeared from my applications folder all of a sudden.now i did not delete anything myself. i mean even if i did i dont think i would delete textedit.lus i only have one account on this computer and no one else logs on.does anyone know what could be wrong? i used disk utility and repaired the permissions

I am getting close to desperate after trying "everything" to make the navigation menu active on the first page of a site I'm developing for my brother's band. No matter what I do, the navigation on [URL] doesn't work and I'm flabbergasted as to why this is happening. Or not happening, so to speak. The other pages [URL] work like a charm, at least when it comes to links.

I'm really not sure if this is some stupid thing I'm missing, but I've never been able to choose 'Fan' view for any of my stacks, I only have List or Grid! I've tried it for all different sized folders, and I can't think why it's not there.

Besides using mac os to install & uninstall apps, what are the best apps out there that can; dwonload from the internet & off a thumb drive all types of files like dmgs, zip files & other odd files types, & install them properly on my mac
And a app that properly & completely uninstalls apps, without leaving thngs in the registry

I use Adium for two reasons:
1. My work clients are scattered across AIM, Yahoo, and MSN, so it's nice to have one application that can communicate with all of them.
2. I like being able to customize the look and feel of the interface
That being said, lately I've become very frustrated because I can't seem to get Adium to play nicely with Leopard's Spaces. I have Adium set (both in Spaces and in Adium) to be visible on all spaces. Yet if a chat is opened, for instance, in Space 3 and mid-chat I decide to switch to Space 4, the chat window doesn't come along for the ride. Likewise, if during a lull in the chat, I switch between several different spaces and lose track of where the chat window was last seen, I can't locate it by hitting F8 and showing all spaces. The chat window doesn't appear on any of them. The only way I can find the chat window is by methodically going to each space until I discover the truant.
